In August 1983, Toyota President Eiji Toyoda asked his management team if Toyota could "build a luxury car better than the best competitors." This was followed by a resounding 'yes'. This was the start of the top secret 'Maru-F' project that ultimately resulted in the very first Lexus, the LS400.
The Lexus LS was so good that it embarrassed Mercedes-Benz and delayed the introduction of the S-class W140 series, causing costs to spiral out of control, which ultimately cost Daimler-Benz chief engineer Wolfgang Peter his job.
Today I would like to tell you all about the incredibly inspiring story behind the technically best luxury car ever built.
A tribute to the incredible dedication of Toyota engineers in "the pursuit of perfection".
