ok so you know me, I like Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. Though it's definitely divided the fan base I fall on the side that thinks it was a rollercoaster ride that contained some of the best horror scenes in the MCU. Wanda was a great villain to me and watching this chase across several universes felt like one of the funnest rides I'd had in the marvel universe for a long time.
However things were originally gonna be different to what we got and if you cast your mind back to the phase 4 announcement then you'll remember Scott Derrickson was initially behind the project. He'd just come off the back of the original Doctor Strange movie and at the event he said they were gearing up to create the first horror movie in the MCU.
However Derrickson and the studio ended up parting ways over what was said to be creative differences. Though rumours flew around the project at the time that said Marvel were afraid of how far he was gonna go with it this has sort of been debunked. During an interview with Empire, Kevin Feige said that the studio still loves Scott and though no one really believes them, it was genuinely just down to creative differences.

Now since then Scott has gone on to direct the phenomenal Black Phone and it makes you wonder what his original plan was going to be.
Well we've bloody got it.
After sorting through leaks, interviews and what insiders close to the movie have said we've pieced together elements of what the original plan for the movie was supposed to be.
So join us as we take a trip through an alternate timeline in order to ask What If.

Now first up there was very much three versions of this film with the first one being Derricksons and then the plan with Raimi's both pre and mid pandemic. You might remember that Multiverse Of Madness was slated to release before No Way Home but that Sony ended up refusing to budge on their december release date which led to them swapping places.
America Chavez was originally going to be introduced in this film and then come No Way Home she'd be the person that pulled across Andrew and Tobey. This was shown in a lot of concept art for the film and it makes way more sense than having Ned discover he's a wizard.

It sounds like this version would’ve been way better… having a slower arch to Wanda’s descent makes more sense, because in Sam Raimi’s version, it felt rushed!! Also having the original Mordo come back as well as seeing brother voodoo and nightmare would’ve been insane… Don’t get me wrong, having the Illuminati appear was pretty cool, but at the same time it was kind of wasted potential!!

Being rushed isn't Raimi's fault... That's whoever mandated that dumb ass 2 hour runtime. Movie needed another 30 minutes. Same with Thor 4. Like didn't we prove people would watch long ass movies when Endgame came out? Hell scratch that remember when an almost 3 hour Pirates movie made a billion lmfao. I just think there's a version of this movie on the cutting room floor that is 100000000% better.

After hearing this original script/concept, the title of the movie makes much more sense, imo. After watching the movie we got, it should've just been titled "Doctor Strange in A Multiverse" or a different title entirely. Didn't really feel the ""Multiverse of Madness" concept while watching the film.

I think the original story plan was similar to what everyone originally had in mind. Wanda starting out helping the heroes then becoming the bad guy in the latter act.

While Wanda is most definitely a main character here, I think far too many people are missing the very clear character development Strange has from beginning to end. It’s a character study in a lot of ways for him when you really analyze it deeper. The consistent theme being about “holding the knife”. One of the most important scenes in the film no one mentions is the conversation between Strange and Dr. West at the beginning. West mentions how although yes everyone from the snap was brought back, he provided a very personal and humane look at how the snap effected people. He said that in the time he was gone, he lost people in his family (including his cats lol). And he shows that the everyday person in the MCU could look at the events very differently, wondering if it DID have to happen that way. This is where Strange’s journey across the multiverse meeting/learning about his other variants comes in. They serve as a self reflection for Strange as a character to grow beyond them at the end. The contrast between Defender Strange going to kill America for her power, but our Strange doesn’t. Illuminati Strange doing what he felt was “the only way” to defeat Thanos, resulting in the Annihilation of a whole universe. And then Sinister Strange as well. All these variants provide a deep self reflection for his character, the choices he makes, and how to grow BEYOND his variants. Realizing that he doesn’t always have to hold the knife. Of course Wanda is amazing as well and had a lot of development cuz well, she’s the co Star and main antagonist lol. But the point is, Strange has clear development from beginning to end, which is also exemplified through him bowing to Wong. Yes Strange was humbled in many ways in the first film, but he’s always still had that arrogance about him. And clearly after coming back, he hasn’t been content with his place in the universe with Wong as Sorcerer Supreme and not him. He had multiple instances in NWH and MoM where he appeared clearly annoyed about it, and thus didn’t follow ancient customs. But yet at the end of MoM, he shows more humility and contentment than ever by bowing to Wong. This comment has become way too long, but I just wanted to provide some of how I interpreted this film 🤣

@@rileyribble6733 The problem is that the "Holding the knife" character arc didn't make sense for Strange to have. Other then being arrogant and being used to move the plot along, there are not really many times Strange takes control of a situation more then anyone else would. The final battle of DS1 was really based around the "I'm your prisoner and you are mine" idea which contradicts this 'holding the knife' arc. If that doesn't convince you take infinity war for example. Strange is kinda off on the 'I just care about the time stone, do whatever the hell you want' path. He peers into the future to find out what needs to happen (Aka Marvel being lazy and wanting an excuse for thanos not being defeated in easier ways) but he doesn't really help with the planning. Even in the fight scenes, other then the Thanos Strange 1v1, he helps the others without taking the spotlight away. The 'holding the knife' arc, if you can even call it that, only fits in DS1. Sure, we see Strange go through "growth" by bowing to Wong, but that isn't saying much. Wouldn't you be jealous if your best friend got the promotion that was meant for you? Also, I skimmed over your comment but you said something about ancient customs and Strange not following them. This isn't him being a control freak or stubborn, this ties into the basis of his character and DS1. He was a man of science thrusted into this world of magic and mystery. Of course he does things a little unorthodox. He was a prodigy and his unique take on magic and creativity makes him stand out from the rest, and that's what will make him the best sorcerer supreme, despite the Ancient one having more raw power. (The Ancient One literally said this in the movie so don't come at me lmao)

@@truckdriver2129 totally agree with you. I feel Marvel is trying to put down Strange for no reason whatsoever. They are tying him down refusing to give him full potential. He is easily the best fit to be in Tony Stark’s place yet it seems Marvel doesn’t want to create another RDJ because his price got so high at the end and because now they are trying to promote the female characters on the expense of the male ones. I am all for great female characters but don’t disrespect great male characters in their own movies to promote the female ones. Strange has great potential and Marvel is wasting it and wasting Benedict Cumberbatch who is a phenomenal actor.

I feel like Feige is turning into his own worst enemy; in the desire to keep the on-going story moving, he seems to be forcing directors to cater to his vision and not the other way around. No wonder Derrickson left. Still, he did say he'd be open to coming back for a third and I pray he does. As much as I like Multiverse, his film is what made me fall in love with Stephen's character and I think if anyone can do Doctor Strange justice it's him. Hell, even if he only came back with Russell Craig as a writer for the third film but Marvel kept Raimi in the director's chair, I'd be okay with that.

Although WandaVision ended with Wanda using/being corrupted by the Darkhold and “hearing” her lost sons… A scene where she learned of America Chavez’s powers (even in flashback) would have been the missing piece! Nightmare or Mephisto (as the rabbit from WandaVision) could have even had a cameo appearance as the source of the information…. And then been a “tease” for eventually fully appearing in another film. Nightmare makes the most sense with all the talk of dreams being peeks into other realities in the Multiverse!!

In other words, they decided to sacrifice the movie as whole in order to set up other movies down the line instead of telling a compelling and complete story with fewer branches and references. I would've much preferred the original version as it would've shown Wanda's journey into darkness, making her more sympathetic and compelling instead of mildly annoying for the sake of cartoonish villainy.

That’s the problem I have with Disney. They hire great artists, but never wanna commit to vision they have in place. Back in 2012, they hired Michael Ardnt, the genius behind the scripts for “Little Miss Sunshine”, and “Toy Story 3”, to write the script for what would be become “The Force Awakens”. Things were going good, but Michael said he needed at least 3 years to make the best script he could possibly write, and Disney said “no”. That’s when J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan came in.

I was bummed when Scott Derrickson left doctor strange because he's a pretty underrated horror director. The first doctor strange film was great and after watching Sinister and The Black Phone, it really makes me wonder what MOM could've been. We really could've gotten a good marvel film with a good story with some horror/thriller elements. I also feel like Derrickson understands doctor strange more than sam raimi.

The gradual on-screen descendance to villainy would've been engaging. However, cramming it with Brother Voodoo and Nightmare would've feel way too stuffed. Having Mordo as s villain would've been fine, in accordance to the post-credits scene of the first movie. And than have Wanda filling in the role.

Sam raimi just directed the movie, which granted he did well with, the real villain to blame for not getting that sequel instead of the one we got is Michael Waldron, the writer of the show Loki. He changed so many things around the script, and because of this douchebag AND Kevin feige for choosing him, they both ruined doctor strange 2 and Loki with one fell swoop…..

They messed up hitting the ground running with Wanda going straight villain. Continuing her redemption arc from West-View only to see her become the villain would have been far better. Cause as it stands now? Hitting the ground running was a huge tonal shift to her and felt like a huge mistake to me. She just didn't feel like the same Wanda who had just fought Agatha all along. It was jarring...and no Vision involved in Multiverse made no sense either.

I think the original script definitely would've felt more like a sequel that still plays into the multiverse saga better than what we ultimately got. The illuminati was cool and all but they we just exposition dumps that could've been done better by the original version in my opinion. Making it tie more heavily into to What If series would've done good for disney plus as people would get a subscription just to see what happens there. I know there are some legal troubles with Shumagoraith and they probably would've just named him "the many angled one" solidifying tittles over names in Marvel properties moving forward. What we got was still fun but this version definitely had better setup for future installments and multiverse shenanigans. Plus would've been a good payoff to have doctor strange, Wanda, Mordo and the purple chick doing magic and battling a multiversal being. Then Wanda turning to the dark side. but hey Thats what happens when directors leave, scripts get rewritten and scenes being reshot. I wish there was a world in where both versions had been shot and compared but this is the world we are in today. The actual release was fun but the OG seems like it would've been way better

I think the original draft sounds great. Wanda switching side at the end of the movie because she could have her childrens makes way more sense than we got. Strange could still end up in the Dark Dimension with Clea. Wanda finally be able to contact Chthon and in the 3rd Dr.Strange movie they could show us a battle between Dormammu and Chthon through proxies such as Strange and Wanda respectively. The original draft could also tie in the concept of dreams with Nightmare as a dimension between universes and it could tease at the idea of how Kang could conquer every universes so easily.

There's a lot of great ideas and shots in this film (and I LOVE Sam Rami), but as part of the overall mythology and storytelling of the MCU it just doesn't work, and feels more like a strange fever dream you had in anticipation for the film. When we lost saw Wanda she finished the series at maybe a 3 out of 10 on the villainous scale (after possibly escalating to a 6 or 7 earlier in the series before being talked down) and when we meet her in multiverse she's just BOOM 10/10 evil. It didn't feel earned, and the original plan to gradually bring her back up to Villainy sounds much better. I sort of left the film feeling Like Wanda's story didn't really get sendoff. We also didn't get her resolution with White Vision, so I can't help but feel like they'll have to resurrect her to tie things up.

I’ve always liked the character of the Scarlet Witch in the comics. WandaVision showed here go through the grieving process and come to terms with her loss and seek control over how not to abuse her powers. Having her be a villain seemed like a character back step. It was a missed opportunity to show a woman who has lost it all and survived. The original script seems a bit more thought out than what we got.

While awesome the idea and the implications of them existing in the 616 universe, in the movie itself didnt really matter when they all die within seconds. There was an early concept art for NWH where America was supposed to be introduced if the release stayed the same and her also being responsible for Tobey Mcguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man to appear in the 616 universe. There was also a plot where Doctor Strange was fighting Mysterio (supposedly alive) on the Statue of Liberty, etc.

Personally it should have been Wanda and the Multiverse of Madness because Cumberbatch almost was NOT the focus of attention.i wish Wong could get a Disney + show as Sorcerer Supreme I know I’m not the first one that had this eureka epiphany moment but he has really created a great niche for himself in that part. It feels like every MCU movies after Endgame are just one-offs where it doesn’t lead to anything big in the future. I remember back starting from Iron man 1, each movies are leading to something big (avenger series) with infinity stones that aren’t explicitly mention yet shown in hidden forms until Thanos comes up as cameos in severals of them, that is the time we as audience realized that MCU is heading for the Avenger series as well as Infinity War saga. Overall, MCU these days always rushing up everything (except the series, most of them are great)

Definitely fits in with the remorseful Wanda who learnt the errors of abusing her powers to help her with her grief, and that an individual’s right to make their own decisions is better than brainwashing an entire town to safe-guard her from herself 🤦🏻‍♂️… I get that the Darkhold is a destructive evil force that corrupts her, but they could’ve shown that transition in character gradually to make it feel more authentic… Not just “Wanda is evil now, enjoy!”…. Would’ve made more sense if Wanda went evil straight after Endgame, but not like this. Great execution by Elizabeth Olsen, but was poorly written and completely undid any character growth she developed in her series.

So, because the writer wanted “greatest villain ever”, he thought if he made Wanda an avengers level threat in the very beginning he’d have himself an Avengers level movie. Smh… Was he being selfish or stupid? You could have showed her get to that point slowly over a few movies. Vision is out there, Wonderman is about to be introduced, XMen are coming. For a movie called Multiverse of madness in both versions doesn't seem to have much Multiverse

Multiverse of Madness was so disconnected from any of the MCU continuity and relied too much on the actors being cool, and nothing about the story. Dr. Strange as the protagonist went through no meaningful development as a character. I loved the cameos, but this movie missed the mark and could have done so much more for 1) pushing the entirety of the MCU in a new direction and 2) Dr. Strange's character development. In their attempt to "use the best villain in the MCU", they rushed Wanda to a dark place without any emotional weight. Wandavision ends with us unsure of what direction Wanda will go next. This movie had the advantage of the entire fanbase basically being in love with Elizabeth Olsen and instead of maximizing her journey as a character, they rushed it because they wanted to be the ones to show "Scarlet Witch vs Dr Strange". Sam Raimi was the wrong choice for this film and had openly admitted to not having seen a lot of the MCU movies. "Doing horror" is more than just tropes. It has to be intentional. This movie went from a children's monster flick to a strictly auditory jump scare tactic with no heart. The only reason to rewatch the released version of the film is for the cameos because of the fan-service they provided. Beyond that, the movie fumbled the ball after Scott Derickson set up so much potential.

What fan service regarding cameos , the illuminati were nerfed to barely thugs with a sprinkle of powers , was a joke . And what a seen from a mile woke move , let's kill the guys in one second and in brutal way just to have a longer girl fight power , yay ... Doctor Strange is just a sidekick who just gives a speech to a girl for the final fight , he doesn't even participate in the final fight of his so called "own movie " 😅🤣 . They did them so dirty . I've stopped watching Marvel movies after this mess , such a slap on the face for the fanbase .

Yeah doctor strange 2 and thor love and thunder are best movie of marvel , civil war and first doctor strange suck. Wanda vision best marvel show, daredevil is shit.
