The Original Pilot’s Chronograph: Hanhart 417 ES Review

When you think of German aviation watches, several brands spring to mind including Laco, Sinn and, of course, Hanhart. All three are known for producing striking reproductions of vintage references but, perhaps, Hanhart has trumped them all with the new Hanhart 417 ES - a manually-wound chronograph with beautiful, 1950s looks and pedigree derived from the German Air Force and Steve McQueen. In today’s video, I’d like to take a close look at the 417 ES to find out about its incredible history and to investigate perhaps the best pilot’s chronograph under £2,000.

This chronograph is exactly what watch enthusiasts are after. Great design, great history as a brand, great mechanical movement followed by one of the greatest movie stars. Definitely in my shortlist. Great video and job on the review. I'm sold.

Well, I think it's fantastic. The dial is a thing of total beauty. It's from a bygone period but translates really well today. I guess I'm saying it's timeless; and a 13mm deep chrono is a real selling point, too.

Hmm, adding this one to the "want" list. Love military-inspired chronographs with a rich history. This is gorgeous. You're bang on about the watch roll - more brands need to give us useful travel boxes or watch rolls, we don't need a briefcase presentation box. It's an utter waste.

Having tried the simular Breitling 765 I found it a little hard to read the time at a quick glance. Price an issue too btw. This seems much more legible and characterful. Brilliant review Armand, many thanks.....

Having a good collection of WW1 trench watches, a number of WW2 German military & a beautiful flieger, I love Hanhart. It doesn’t help I’m a mad Steve McQueen fan either!😎🤣 So this particular model has been on my radar for some time, although ideally I’ve wanted an original for a number of years. But they’ve just been getting further & further away in price. Just the same, I really like this iteration.👍🏼 Great review. Cheers from “Down Under”. 🍻🇦🇺

It's always hard to beat the Sinn, but this thing is beautiful, watching of that dial with a macro lens is really hypnotic, i would be able to watch it whole day. A colour combination is perfect, that should be very good watch for a low light conditions. Like

Has such great vintage elements. Coin edge bezel, bicompax black dial, lumed hands and indices, serif and non serif fonts, great pencil hands and train tracks around the dials. Then the squared red pip at 12 o'clock reveals its covert sensibilities. Nice piece!

Super review of this underrepresented brand. Very nice - I'd see the main competition (mid-market, heritage aviation chronos) as the Longines Aviation BigEye. I went BigEye, but a smaller 417 might have tipped the balance to Germany and the waterproofing of the Hanhart is a great strength. Irrespective, I think a great design, strap, packaging and a very fair price.

Outstanding. Both watch and video! Love the history you provide! I was fortunate to be able to get the Bronze version of this watch, the Rake & Revolution LE. The only difference between the two watches being the choice of metal. Simple is good. I am so impressed with this watch. Not to mention the extremely great value at this price point. I am pretty picky about my chronograph movements, and have sold a couple of watches simply because I did not like the "mushy" feel of the pusher operation as they were not column wheel. But I am more than impressed with this Selitta, and feel little or no compromise. The timekeeping is excellent as well. At first, I was a bit turned off by the 42mm size. However, it is a modern updated revival, so the watch is excellent on it's own merits. I am almost certain that if Hanhart does do a revival piece even closer in size to the original, I will try to be first in line! Well done, Hanhart!
@lankysudanese
@lankysudanese 3 года назад
Thanks for your sharing your ownership experience. Can you tell me more about the timekeeping of your piece? When I contacted Hanhart about the movement, they wouldn’t tell me what grade of sellita movement they were buying, or how many positions they were adjusted in during the in-house regulation.

Great Video, I did not know about the submarine equipment! Happy owner of a pioneer mk1 as well for a couple years now. Would you by any chance know if hanhart was the actual inventor of the design, as brands such as Tutima and Glashutte have made the almost exact same watch as the caliber 41 for the luftwaffe?

When thinking about German aviation watches, German insiders think about A. Lange & Söhne aviators watch with the design of the Reichsluftfahrtministerium. There were 5 companies producing it, Lange in the first place, then IWC, Laco, Stowa & Wempe, the last 3 using swiss movements and all in chronometer quality. The dial design is used by so many companies today, e.g. Mühle Glashütte but certainly Sinn, too. Certainly, Hanhart and Tutima made the chronograph for the navigators.

@ArmandTheWatchGuy
@ArmandTheWatchGuy 3 года назад
+ V SG: Hmm that's an extremely good question. The Longines is the more complex, more seriously engineered watch - no question about it. If we put looks to one side as a moot point, it's the logical choice. However, I'd still probably choose the Hanhart because I prefer the thin, manual format, the construction, whilst simpler, is a definite match for quality and I like the fact that Hanhart is a small brand producing what is, ultimately, a more uncommon watch. A purely emotional choice, I admit, but I stand by it.

I have both and prefer wearing Hanhart. Have it on the wrist right now. While BigEye sits really good on the wrist (one of the most comfortable watches) and has chrono hours dial and nice mechanism, I prefer Hanhart's dial, overall looks and legibility. Was even considering selling BigEye but my wife doesn't allows me to, she loves it :) If you can read Croatian or use Google translate, I did some parallel review for local Croatian forum. portalsatova.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=45755

I can think of 2 statements: 1. A watch is a watch. and 2. Other manufacturers also have chronographs. Regarding 1. I would like to say the following. A clock is there to tell the time. So what does it mean when they say A.L&S or Patek are better watches. Would you go on a bike ride with one of these watches, or take it to the beach? So better watches? Probably not. To 2. Are these better chronographs, Omega Speedmaster etc.? I think the Hanhart 417 ES are the best chronographs ever. They do everything they are supposed to do perfectly. Only with the 417 ES Flyback, the competition comes from within the company.

I love the look, there's almost nothing to be picky about, except for the movement. Make it at least COSC certified with 100BAR WR and I would be ALL in.
@RunawayYe
@RunawayYe 2 года назад
The watch is already 100m WR. 100bar is 1000m, only a handful of divers are rated to that, you can't expect that from a pilot's watch. Also the watch can't be COSC certified as it is not "Swiss Made" which is a requirement for COSC certification. While the Sellita movement is Swiss, the watch is cased in Germany and therefore not "Swiss Made" by definition.
