This was such a great video - subscribed! Im curious... did you draw from just your own experiences for this video or did you like poll some spyro fans or something? Lol much of it was so accurate to my life too it was getting spooky!
@@KJ-pr1hq Lol we just pulled from our own experiences. The fact that other people are able to relate to them just speaks to the universal impact Spyro had!
I think you've neglected a pretty major part of the magic of Spyro, which is its overall presentation. Spyro, especially the first spyro, did everything that it could to mask traditional game elements. Most other games have a health bar on the HUD, which is an ever present reminder of the fact that you're playing a video game whenever you get hurt. Spyro doesn't, he has Sparx, a character in the game who's his best friend and also reminds you of its physical, living presence by doing his little buzz when he collects gems. Not to mention he's a conduit for all of the game mechanics you unlock in 3 like Fast Travel, Extra HP, and Gem Finding. Your menu in the second 2 games wasn't just a generic barebones GUI pause menu, it was a full Guidebook and Atlas, which showed you pictures of the Locales and felt like an actual guide to your journey that would be housed in a book. Even the collectibles were tangible things that tied into the greater narrative and not just McGuffins (well maybe the Orbs a little, but they gave them actual lore). In some other games like Crash, Sonic, or some Mario titles, levels are just places following a theme. But in Spyro, they're named locations with their own denizens, worldbuilding, and relation to the world, and all of the Denizens are fully voiced, which is something that no other platformer of the time had managed to accomplish. Additionally, you don't simply go to a map and hit 1-1, you physically locate and fly through the gateway that takes you there. And there's not a loading screen in sight, it's all masked behind flying from point A to B. The Dragon Statues Cracking open in Spyro 1 were also sneaky loading screens for the cutscenes. And even though there's minigames, you have an NPC explaining the situation and need for the minigame in a way that ties back to the level story or full story in a believable way. The magic of Spyro comes from the level of Immersion and suspension of disbelief that it brings to the table. A lot of its mechanics, GUI and formula were all artfully crafted setpieces for an immersive experience, and I think that the artful OST which you do mention helps to tie all of those elements together.
Honestly, Sypro YOTD is one of my favorite games of all time, nothing can replicate the feeling that you get whilst playing it, not even the other 2 original trilogy games, though that might just be down to nostalgia playing a massive factor with Spyro YOTD for me. You can replay it time after time and never get bored, the soundtrack as well is amazing, and the levels are like nothing else in any other game; not even the Reignited Trilogy could replicate the magic of YOTD (Not saying Reignited was bad, it just isn't as good as the OG 3).
Same! I'm sure it came through in the video, but YOTD is by far our favorite of the three. Spyro the Dragon crawled so Ripto's Rage could walk, and Ripto's Rage walked so YOTD could run lol
Spyro: Year of the Dragon is Spyro at its most properly realised, and is the only one I found fun to play. There's a lot wrong with 1 & 2 when it comes to basic fundamentals and design (redundant collectables for example), and 3 streamlined it all to offer an intuitive, challenging and satisfying collectathon-action-adventure. Definitely up there with some of the best of the time, such as Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, and Toy Story 2.
I thought I was the only one who still listens to the original spyro the dragon video game music in my spare time. I thought I was crazy/strange for listening to video game music in general! Lol nice to know I’m not the only one.
The original trilogy's music is a STAPLE in my music playlist that I regularly listen to each and every week. Especially the first game. That strong bass and percussion and guitar is just so amazing.
You unlocked that memory I had stored away a lifetime ago regarding the evil sorceress surviving. The only post game I ever unlocked as a kid was Ripto’s Rage with the amusement park, that meant the world to me at the time since it meant Spyro finally got to chill for once. To now be told she comes back for a final time answered a forgotten age old question. Im happy I saw your very first video in the top of my recommended page, your one of the lucky ones! You are such a talented, funny dude and I’m happy to say I get to be a new subscriber to your budding RU-vid future. ❤🎉
Lol now you have to replay Year of the Dragon so you can defeat the Sorceress for real yourself. The algorithm is definitely blessing us haha, thanks so much for your kind words and for subscribing!
Holy hell I've laughed more at this video than I have from any other 1M+ channel in a while. As a fellow Playstation kid, I appreciate the love Spyro's been getting. Especially when that love is in the form of an amazingly edited, hilarious video. Props!
I legit love a lot of what Toys for Bob did with the Reignited Trilogy (I honestly think they did a much better job with it than Vicarious Visions did with Crash N. Sane lol), but yeah it was never gonna be able to replace the originals. Like, those PS1 classics are finished creative statements with lots of historical value; not only are they nostalgic & just plain fun to play but they give us a window into how 1990s Insomniac wanted to express themselves and how they did so through the limitations of the PS1. Like, we basically get to experience the nearly unfiltered creative vision of that particular group of people at that particular time & that's legitimately a big part of the classics' magicalness. Nice work with this video, I'm glad I stumbled upon it.
The jump + glide in the Reignited Trilogy isn't quite right and I struggle WAY more in certain areas where it's required than I ever did in the original trilogy. Also, I preferred the original voice acting in Ripto's Rage. Especially Juliette the bird. Her voice is way too normal in the Reignited Trilogy lol But that's it, those are my only complaints, other than that I feel like the Reignited Trilogy is the perfect remake. You still can't beat the OG games though. To say Reignited is the definitive way is honestly a little blasphemous lol
Spyro's my favorite franchise, and I really enjoyed the video - the editing was great! I guess you could say that it helped make the video "magical" haha. This looks like a great start for a new channel!
12th subscriber, I think this video was recommended to me since I’ve been re-watching the recent Spyro video from Caddicarus (we’ve been waiting for his Spyro videos for years) P.s plz do the same for the crash trilogy Also the end part where you would pretend you’re dragons at school then go home & draw your own dragons was super wholesome, I did something similar with coming up with new Pokémon/yugioh monsters back in the day
Big fan of you being our 12th subscriber. We didn't play the Crash trilogy as much as the Spyro trilogy, but a video definitely isn't off the table! And I love to hear that! For all the flak video games get for keeping kids indoors, they sure do stoke the imagination as well!
@@DeviIInADress I know there's the Zera games, not sure about others though. Early PSO2 NGS had a similar feel, with a focus on exploration, and collecting.
Got this video recommended and loved every second of it! The editing is on point and all the memes cracked me up, especially the clips of people bopping to the Midnight Mountain music. I see that this is the first video on your channel and it's definitely a great start! Keep up the good work 💜 And yes, I have totally downloaded the soundtrack for the original trilogy to listen to it whenever I want. Stewart Copeland didn't have to go so hard for us but he did
I love to see that there is still content being made about these games to this day. It really shows how much of an impact it made on our childhoods. great content btw :)
The reignited version is wonderful overall, but the graphics play against it slightly by the characters having more expressiveness. Some of the dry humor is lost in the newer version that I loved from the original trilogy.
When Comrade Spyro liberated the Dragon Egg from that bourgeois parasite Moneybags and the Bailey Gang of working class heroes finally got their hands on him in the epilogue (a scene cut from Reignited, by the way), I had to put down my DualShock, wipe a tear from my eye, and sing a verse of L'Internationale. Bravo Spyro, the magic to make a better world truly _is_ and _always has been_ inside us all all along. And thank you, Nordo, for reminding us of the true meaning of that magic. Pepe would be proud. Definitely a sub from me
I can't thank you enough for emphasizing the music. I know most people play games for the gameplay above everything else, but for me, the music of a game is like, 75% of the reason why I play them. Video game music is all I listen to, and it's been that way ever since I played Spyro 3, my first ever video game. The first game's soundtrack is quite literally, my favorite video game soundtrack of all time (yes, better than 2 and Year of the Dragon). The bass, percussion, guitar riffs, it's all so IMPACTFUL and AWESOME and AMAZING, I can't help but blast it's music every chance I get. It has literally stood the test of time, and the same can be said for the trilogy's music as a whole. I just love it, man.
Reignited changed a LOT of the imaginative textures to just generic stone walls and wooden blanks, taking much of the creativity, uniqueness and lore out of the worlds... Enemies could look more like Mario enemies too, now they had no design bible, each artist just interpret the characters however they liked, it's all inconsistent and stands out like a sore thumb.
@@trainlover16 I can see us making a Crash video at some point. We haven't played the other Spyro games anywhere near as much as the original trilogy, so not sure about those
Hey guys thanks for the video. It’s nice knowing there is people out there who understand the magnitude of which Spyro has instilled in me!!!! God bless guys. B.T.W Year Of The Dragon is the best Spyro game of all time right?
I loved how you talked about the reignited trilogy at the end of the video. Personally I think the first game is better in reignited than on PS1 because of how they added skill points and also fast travel to any level. Plus I love what they did with all the dragons you rescue in the game. They all just look so incredible I think. There was so much work and effort that went into making them I think. Especially Nestor, the first dragon you ever rescue in the Artisans homeworld. Especially how in the initial reveal trailer, the placeholder design looked questionable at best. 2 and 3 however, definitely best to stick to the PS1 versions if possible, but I love how certain characters react to Spyro’s flame like Elora and Hunter. Especially Moneybags and how different it is to Ripto’s Rage and Year of the Dragon. In particular the latter game when you roast him. He definitely deserved it! The sort of character you love to hate on am I right?
I just started listening to the trilogy soundtracks recently (~ a few months ago) and it couldn't have felt any more nostalgiac. I was waiting for y'all to mention it! Great vid - you've got another sub! And one who believes in Spyro supremacy, at that 💜
Something that I think helps the Spyro trilogy is the unique level designs. At the time of its release the big 3D platformers were Mario 64 and Crash. Spyro takes a different approach from either of those series with how it designs its levels. Mario and Banjo both had open worlds that were fun to explore, but not as much fun to just play through. Crash had very linear levels that were fun and challenging but left little to no room for exploration. Spyro hit such a good balance between the two styles that made his levels fun to play through and explore. They were laid out in a linear fashion but had many nooks and side paths that made poking into every corner along the way entertaining. I really hope that Spyro 4 doesn't try to make everything so big and open just because most modern games are. I hope they realize that Spyro's unique level structure is a big part of why it stands out.
I love how in every Spyro video they act like them and everyone watching is just like yeah the music is the drummer from the police and I know all about him and have been knowing all about him forever.. doesn’t everybody?? 😃
I've never had somebody think exactly like I do and just listen to them say everything in the exact way I feel about it. I found this video in the first place because I wanted to hear the Spyro 3 main menu theme. Hunter's new voice is not as good and the monks' "wyaiyaiyaohm" is waaAAAY better than the new sound. I like that when you pause the game though, the music gets muffled so it sounds like you're hearing music from far away/through a wall. and of course, being able to use the right stick to look around is great. Thank you.
I replayed these during Uni a few years back and they didn't disappoint! Being an adult and actaully being able to finish the games felt so satisfying but also like i was closing chapters of my life i didn't want to
Your first video is great, so for your next video could you talk about the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy? Crash Bandicoot was the sister series to Spyro The Dragon.
As subscriber 99 I've gotta say this was some good shit for a 1st try. Only issue was I felt like you could've split the video talking about the 3 games separately, as stuff kind of got mish-mashed at weird times flow-wise. Then again, this WAS just a general overview of the trilogy itself so that couldn't really be helped. Still, looking forward to what you'll make in the future!
My brain is weird sometimes. When I first played the reignited trilogy, I was like “oh look, even the graphics still the same”. Then I watched graphics comparison on youtube, and well they look so different. Lol. Same thing happened when I (my brain) first compared GTA SA and GTA V. Thought for sure the graphics were the same.
i just finished the reignited trilogy yesterday, getting all achievements. spyro 1 is a great game, absolutely loved playing through that one and getting everything. spyro 2 broke my soul and by the time i got to spyro 3 i just wanted to be done and never play the games again
I remember getting Year of the Dragon as a kid for the PS1. Played it, finished it, loved it; then one day, my PS1 stopped working, my mom took it to a place to get it fixed, around a week or so after I got my PS1 back, but it had Spyro 1 inside 🤩 I didn't know about prequels back then, I was so happy to discover other Spyro games existed. I had a whole new game to play and explore and I loved every single minute of it. I never knew if it was a gift, or if I just got someone else's PS1. I now own the Reignited Trilogy on the switch, good times.
What a great video! You are spot on when it comes to the music. I listen to the OG trilogy when I'm driving and I feel like it heightens the sense of adventure every single time. I feel like I'm on a funky quest just driving to the grocery store. Also, while I appreciate the existence of the Reignited Trilogy, I have only been able to watch videos of the gameplay because I'm just too attached to the original games. From what I've seen, they just lack the attitude and style of the originals, and the sound effects are just not the same. Still, I feel like they've done a good job introducing the franchise to a new gen and hopefully this means more Spyro games in the future. P.S. - I highly recommend anyone reading this to dig deeper into Stewart Copeland's music. You will hear Spyro-esque melodies (and even some that are directly taken from the games) in his solo music (for TV, film, etc.), his pseudonym Klark Kent, Gizmodrome, Oysterhead, Animal Logic, etc. The man is a musical genius.
My only critique of the Reignited Trilogy is the voice work. Spyro sounds great but Hunter ended up sounding like Owen Willson, his voice in the OG games was SOO much better. Elora and the Professor were fine. Sheila, Sgt Bird, Bentley and Agent 9 were also fine but some of the npc character voices were just awful. If you listen to the OG voices and the ones from the remake back to back the new ones sound so flat, sometimes even lifeless. They just aren't as fun.
Pretty much agree. Spyro may not be the most complex, challenging, or narratively compelling game out there, but there's something special about its simple, easy going, storybook approach to its design and gameplay that's hard to replicate or recreate. Especially the music (though, I have to disagree about Midnight Mountain. That was my least favorite track of Spyro 3. Evening Lake in that game all the way, dude!) I really did enjjoy the Reignited Trilogy, and maintain the belief that it's definitely the best way to play Spyro 1 full stop, but Spyro 2 and 3 are still better off played on the PS1. There's some key changes to attitude in the remake that detract from the charms of the original latter two (especially with cutscene changes and dialog pacing). Still, it's quite nice to have a collection of all three games that play pretty great in one setting. Now, if we could just get a proper Spyro 4, then the Reignited Trilogy would be that much more worth it.
Completion bonus? Once or twice I did care. But whenever I play the games now I go for lazymode and play the main levels, collect as much as I can care and still enjoy the games. Same for Crash. You think I go for all gems in Crash1 when I know the secret ending already? Maybe when I'm again in the mood for that, whenever that will be.
Damn bro this video slapped. Good shit. I miss when games were simple and good. Now everything needs to be the new "wow killer , destiny killer , cod killer , dark souls killer" Sometimes. Less is more. Just the short bits of Spyro are packed with so much flavor.
I 100% agree with you on the music aspect of Spyro. I've played these games since I was a kid and have always thought the music was top-tier compared to many other games. That being said, I listen to the music (through gameplay) to study, and so far it hasn't failed me yet! The other thing that really makes Spyro feel magical is the fact that for its time it felt huge and that for a ps1 game, there was a lot to explore. You didn't feel constricted while playing it. I think that, and of course, the beautiful scenery also really helped. The fact that the games were made so quickly and that people still love them today says a lot.
To be fair the 3rd game was mediocre and you could literally feel while playing it that the Devs where out of ideas regarding the franchise. Hell they even claimed and i quote :" There is only so much you can do with a protagonist that does not have hands." They said that after Spyro 2 mind you. Still. Contracts forced them into making 3 games so we got Spyro3 which was filled with minigames and irrelevant side characters you never see again. The first 2 games are magic. The 3rd one is just okey.
First video I've seen from you. I love Spyro myself! Great video! Made me sub and like! The comedy was very fresh and original! I'd love to see more content like this! I'm sure it took tons of work to edit all that! Good work man!
Finally someone who thought dragon shores was fun. I think alot of people reviewing this game as an adult forget its a game for kids. And as a kid I LOVED dragon shores. Hitting the yeti in the water, the tunnel of love, I thought it was hilarious. And the minigames are fun too.
13:35 Yeah, but the ps1 and Spyro didn't have the motion controllers, which DOES make Wii Carnival Games innovative, so Spyro DIDN'T do it first. I don't see you doing that dunk tank, rollercoaster, shooting gallery or tunnel of love on Spyro 2 using the Wii MOTION CONTROLLERS innovative tech now do I? 13:45 EVERYTHING I just said means Wii Carnival Games with motion control is more innovative then Spyro 2's.
I have the collectors edition for the ps1 and I LOVE IT if you can’t find the original games for a decent price possibly I think is still on the ps3 store and there’s ways on still getting it
I just got a switch and the first game I bought was the Spyro Reignited trilogy. I never got to finish Year of the Dragon before my dad gave away our PS1.
Bro the first game may be magical but the other 2 are tainted by the inclusion of that abhorrent cheetah character. A creature so off putting that the dragons tried desperately to be turned back to stone so they didn't have to witness such a sickening, twisted simulacrum of a feline. The designer of his ungodly form was tried at the Haig and convicted for crimes against humanity. Death by firing squad was deemed not severe enough; it was pointed out that that sentence was last used for the masterminds of a genocide, a crime considered much, much lesser then having designed Hunter the cheetah.
This has always been my favorite game trilogy I've just finished the reignited trilogy and I always used to think 2 was my favorite but I got to say it might be year of the dragon now
2 years after all bloggers covered how great the trylogy is, some random nobody "Blessed" us with her definitely not already-mentioned and definitely different valid opinion. Greeeat. Just shit that out and i will be on my day
i loooove stumbling on new spyro videos, this one was great!!! i subscribed ^^ i also made the game opinion joke lols, great minds and all :) the og trilogy will never be beaten
People these days are so nitpicking annoying things about old gsmes instead of appreciating the good things that ARE there. Its impossible to articulate how these games made us feel as kids. And as an adult yiu go back and play and it's not the same but it's something at least
I was never very vocal about my desire for my favourite childhood games - like the spyro trilogy - to be remade, but I did often think that I would love for such games to get modern remakes. the Reignited Trilogy made me rethink that. not because it's bad, or didn't do the games justice - it's fantastic - but because playing it, then going back and playing the originals made me realise that what they provide is not what I want. I genuinely prefer the old games, and the only benefit the new games had for me was that I could use mouse and keyboard controls if I wanted to. just like you, I prefer the simple, janky designs of the original games over the polished, detailed designs of the remake. the remakes are very pretty to look at, but just feel... I don't know, too polished? and I suppose different to what I imagined (not a real complaint, I don't expect the game to cater to my preferences exclusively lol, just a reason why I prefer the originals). the originals do have that charm to them that I definitely feel is enhanced by the simple ps1 graphics. I'm glad the reignited trilogy exists. I'm glad it's introduced a whole new generation to the true spyro, and not that mangled corpse they call skylanders. but for me, the original 3 will always be my favourites
Naaah The Legend of Spyro series is much more, all songs don't even use Electronic and instead Orchestra, Latin and truly Atmospheric Tracks. Convexity, Dream Sequence Environments, Mountain of Malefor, The White Isle and Celestial Caves are also the most mystical & supernatural locations in the series.
Within 5 minutes of playing Reignited I found a hallway in Artisan World where an entire wall was missing. Not a texture, not a misaligned gap where you could see thru, the entire wall was gone. This was already on the shitty Switch port where the "graphics" m ay as well have been re-used PS1 because they looked like fucking shit, "modern" graphics but with all the sliders turned down to 0 and shitty FPS.
spyro 5 is also very good. the world design is the best by far. actually walking to the next level instead of entering a loading screen is so cool. sad they somehow though not making gems unique collectable would improve the game, couldve been the best spyro otherwise. so spyro 3 is my fav. i actually played that game yesterday. its the perfect chill game. modern games use overwhelming mechanics to make you not bored. spyro "overwhelms" you with colorful unique fantasy worlds and just some spiced up mechanics here and there. you pretty much progress the game by walking around, looking at the world. dont know why there are not more games like that, especially nowadays with better graphics it would be even better. spyro 1 and 2 i dont really like them that much. good to play once or twice if you never did before. but spyro 3 is pretty much the best of both combined and more. also i dont like all the violence in spyro 2. its gross even for a kids game or should i say especially for a kids game. last time i played that game i paid attention to it and almost every single cutscene is just about very cruel stuff.
I recall Moneybags states that he's working for The Sorceress during Spyro 3, on top of the fact you can see the friends you save in the cutscenes captured before boss fights, so I doubt Moneybags is doing anything, and its just The Sorceress's goons that captured them, she just lets him look after them following. Like you said later, the devs clearly realized how punchable Moneybags is, since Spyro 3 noticeably really plays into him being a dick, he was just greedy in the second game, but mostly harmless, they really wanted you to hate him in the third game.
I still play those games! They are my entire childhood such lovely games 🤌 I dont like the remake though, the remake should have been more like the original
Actually you don't play as Hunter in the Ripto's Rage challenges, this was only in Year Of The Dragon (unless you count Spyro being in his remote controlled plane in Canyon Speedway) and the first 2 challenges in the former being in Ocean Speedway and Metro Speedway were by 2 other characters though they were led by Hunter
