The history of women wearing leggings to the grocery store. In this week's episode of Racked series, History Of, we explore the start of athletic gear being worn outside of the gym. And it actually has a lot to do with Jane Fonda! That, and it's just really comfy.

Young people are doing so well with the world in my opinion, we have more acceptance than anyone, I don’t understand why old people hate us

I'm watching this after I paraded around the neighborhood in leggings under a dress where I bought more leggings and didn't step foot in anybody's gym. I do plan to do yoga tomorrow with my new leggings for one hour but I will wear them all day.

I'm British and for many year we only wear tracksuits and leggings all the time . So I may be false I haven't fact checked but I do think this style has been in British culture longer then American or it became a bigger thing here first. As well it could of sprung up more from the road man lifestyle.

In the future this type of clothing will be seen the same way we see 80s athletes clothing this being tacky. 😰

Is Water Wet? I mean it’s basically the same, just take away the scrunched socks, leotards, and big hair.

Her pronunciation of athleisure bothers me. Am I really the only one? If I looked at a dictionary I’m guessing I’d discover that it can acceptably be pronounced both ways, but I myself have always pronounced it “ath-leh-zhur” as opposed to her “ath-lee-zhur”. After all, as the word is a portmanteau of athletic + leisure - and if one takes into account the fact that virtually no one pronounces the word “athletic” as “ath-lee-tic” - why in the world would one pronounce “athleisure” as does this woman? I just find it so weeeeeird. :( I’m curious to know if anyone else finds this as odd as I do. So, RU-vidrs, how do YOU pronounce it? ;3

I would think that the "lee" in this case comes from leisure, and not athletic, maybe?

That's interesting! I've always heard it and said it the way she does, but that is a good point. It just seems we've indiscriminately chosen one over the other.

Leisure, in American pronunciation, is pronounced 'lee-zhur', hence, 'ath-lee-zhur.' :)
