If you look into Mason Verger's past, you realise that Hannibal was actually doing the world a favour (albeit in his own eyes). He was a serial child molester and all-round disgusting, evil person. Whether he deserved to be disfigured and paralysed from the waist down is anyone's guess, but ultimately he did it to himself with some assistance from Hannibal.

Amidst all the chaos, the moment most people overlook is Lecter asking Verger to "show me that smile, what you use to gain the children's confidence", and Verger grins in a way that suggests both his smugness at getting away with it, his vanity, and obviously the literal tool he uses against the kids. That is what leads right into the "suggestion"--seemingly, Dr. Lecter wanted the punishment to fit the crime, so to speak. I know a lot of people didn't like the bending of Hannibal into a kind of "killer of the evil", and for the most part, I strongly agree, and the book's ending is preposterous. However, I felt this particular story still fit with his character..a bit of mixing business and pleasure.
@JohnPritzlaff
@JohnPritzlaff Год назад
The ending isn't preposterous. The character Lecter has always been very good at brainwashing and hypnotizing people with the use of drugs and psychology, and he's always been great at deception and misdirection. Miggs and Paul Krendler come to mind. The fact he could manipulate Clarice into embracing her love of him shouldn't be difficult to suspend your disbelief for. Some part of Clarice might also be playing the long con against him, knowing she has to bide her time to ever have a good chance of capturing him alive without dying in the process. Of course Lecter knows this and has no hangups about his own mortality. I so want a sequel written to Hannibal before Thomas Harris dies.
@Julia-lk8jn
@Julia-lk8jn 10 месяцев назад
@@JohnPritzlaff That's an interesting take on it. Lecter did after all get his claws into her when she was a very young adult and still not over the loss of a male parent, and the book certainly leaned heavily into the FBI being a s*cky employer for Clarice Starling. Still, the way I remember the book they were clearly described as being lovers, not a "I'm playing a super long game here" thing. For me, the revised ending was the best parts about the movie: it leaves things open, and it plays to the best sides of both characters: Clarice's stubborn refusal to be corrupted, and Hannibal's respect for her courage. He's still a murderer, not some anti-hero but I can't help admiring somebody who pays so high a price for sticking to what few principles he has.

According to an interview with Producer Martha De Laurentiis in The Guardian, Gary Oldman demanded to share star billing alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore. When the producers denied him this, he threatened to quit the film but later angrily demanded to have no billing at all. During pre-production, Producer Dino De Laurentiis announced Oldman's involvement at a press conference "just so we couldn't deny that he was in the movie". In the original theatrical release, Oldman is uncredited, but in the VHS and DVD releases, his name was added to the closing credits. However, in an interview with IGN Filmforce, Oldman told a different story stating: "We thought that as I'm unofficially the man of many faces, you know, of Lee Harvey Oswald, Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Sid Vicious, and Ludwig van Beethoven, we thought that I would be... I'm playing the man with no face. So we just had a bit of fun with it. We thought it would be great. The man with no face and no name, and sort of do it anonymously. It's no secret that I'm in the film. We just had fun with it, really."

How many actors can appear in a movie, carry so much of the plot, and command the screen during every scene he's in...all while barely even moving, and not even **HAVING A FACE** to work with?? Considering how an actor's facial expressions are very much a palette with which to convey emotion, mood, menace, et al. Oldman's face was buried under a heavy layer of makeup and prosthetics, effectively leaving him a blank slate to work with. With all that working against him, he still turned in a memorable performance. ...and he didn't even sweat going uncredited. The man is a tour-de-force

Lecter had this code of honor when it came to children. Interesting. He would not harm a child. This is why he found Verger so repulsive and made him disfigure himself. If his predilection to consume human flesh was a psychosis, would he differentiate between adults and children?
@rebfj86
@rebfj86 2 года назад
In the books it said he would consume a victim’s flesh to show his disdain for them. I don’t think he would have such disdain for a child. His murderous and cannibalistic behaviour started after his little sister Mischa was killed and eaten by soldiers in WWII. He ended up killing the ones who killed his sister. He has his own moral compass and I don’t think he would think that something a child did would be egregious enough to warrant being eaten. We can’t know for sure though as he doesn’t really interact with children in the books or films except on the plane at the end of Hannibal. He offers the boy a piece of Paul Krendler’s brain to try so he isn’t above manipulating kids.
