As we close out this Black History Month, we thought it might be nice to highlight some Chicago Black history with the godfather of Chicago-style Steppin'. DJ Sam Chatman joins us now with more on the art of steppin' and its origins.
I had never heard of stepping until that R. Kelly video😊 then my sister dated and married a brother from Chicago and all of a sudden we were stepping at clubs with him, we’re Puerto Ricans who are aged salsa dancers😊❤❤❤❤❤
I am a stepper born and raised in Chicago. We called it boppin'. Chicago has a style of it's own. The steppin' cap of the world. To be honest the dance capital of the world the first soul train 🚂 started in Chicago. We do things differently and with style 'cause we cool about it . Peace and finesse the Chicago way
I love watching the videos on Stepping. It's very classy and the men are handsome and the women are beautiful. It's a great vibe. Stepping is the kind of dance that has been and will be around for years to come. Much love peace and peace peace and blessings to you all. 💋❤️💐🙏✝️💯🔥
Thanks everyone I'm the lady in this video STEPPIN! I also have a channel on here all about Chicago STEPPIN. My channel name is Lady Margaret Steppin Thanks again ♥️♥️♥️
I started bopping in high school and as I graduated and live my life, I became a stepper and it is one of the most satisfying dances I’ve ever did in my life! I moved away from Chicago. I live in Tampa Florida now but we even have Chicago steppers down here in Florida is reaching out everywhere. There is so much fun and I’m 67.
One of Art Kelly's blessing to the Black Family show casing elegance and swag . This was not appreciated by haters, they only wanted to be show us with raggedy behavior, shaming and lowering our image. Art Kelly called it out in white attire jewels, furs, silks and satins, showing our kings and queens makings our family proud.. hahaha nothing like it.Dancing in rhythm, in time with the music.we made our own standards then and now in many more ways. We keep on moving up to our Destiny in a style that cannot be matched.😊😊❤
This is wonderful! In my town, there are a few groups who do this dance style. Our dance style is DC Hand dancing. I also like Detroit Ballroom. I didn’t know these dances are connected to African couples dancing like Kizomba from Angola. Genetic memory. Keep dancing and passing it down to the next generations ❤️🖤💚
Also, I want to say how much Herb Kent means to stepping and Sundays Sunday is the day that we love to step, play cards, play, dominoes Herb Kent made it a tradition and thank you Sam Chapman for keeping it alive!
The hustle is fast and involves alot of arm movement. Almost like an old swing. Stepping is more focus on the feet. So similar but not the same. Im from NY. I luv both 🫶🏾
First, let me say I want that Stacy Adams blue fedora. OMG t hat fedora is awesome. Second, I'm a native Chicagoan from Downers Grove. I love all styles of chicago music and dance. I miss my city so much. Now, I live in Pennsylvania. I was pumpin gas the other day and playing Frankie Beverly "before i let go." The fella at the next pump turned and looked at me and said " my man, your white. what you know about that?" I started steppin to the song. And, I replied :"sir, your not a true Chicagoan if you dont learn how to step." Facts......
My hometown, step on Chitown step on. I wasn't really good at it, but I was good enough to get on the dance floor, lol. I have lost my steps in previous years, but I would love to get back into.
Laugh out loud I remember in the seventies me and my buddies for 71st and Paulina and just all throughout Inglewood and 73rd and Paulina we used to go to the Dodge and on a hundred and 10th and Michigan everybody got along
I love the foods we have during Chinese, Irish, Italian, Korean, European and every other nationality month. Inclusion and diversity means we celebrate each nationality equally.
Awesome👏🏾👏🏾 My mother Bops with my aunt, and it's totally different from Step'n. I'm taking classes no, and I'm glad to see the 8 count and left turn because that's the start😁. East Boogie Slider here.
Yeah well, anyone that is anyone knows that Cleveland steppin' will step on any State's steppin' (Chicago and New York's). But it was EastCleveland Shaw High School that had a lounge where we danced during school hours
I love in South West Louisiana we are known for swing out you are born with dance in your blood we don't take lesson it comes naturally in the black fly out people been doing swing for hundreds of years my home town is Eunice Louisiana St.Landry Parish. My Name is Sam Ceasar
I saw a G. I've seen it all. I am a founder of the dance. Knowledge is my kinswoman. God will deliver my money. Dope describes my rhymes, making all you MCS cold drop like dimes. You know MCSC is back again, and battling me on the microphone is like committing a sin. Scott/MCSC
It's going to take a while to get the hang of it but I hope that I got the timing in my feet. I'd LOVE to learn it so that I can prove my Mom WRONG that I don't have two left feet.
Love this and want to learn the youth can truly benefit from such a classy dance 🩰 I'm sure can learn it's the 6 inch stiletto heels that I would have a issue with simply can't wear 3-in less however the sisters that are wearing the stilettos make the dance look so classy so sophisticated New York City our dance as such was called the hustle Latin love you Chicago steppers l❤
No, the HUSTLE is not the same as Chicago boppin/steppin' (although similar), which goes back to the 40s/50s ..and remember, SOUL TRAIN came out of Chicago.
Reality check: 1950's, Englewood, Chicago, IL,- originated stepping, they called it bopping, incorporating, the style of the late forties dancers from Hollywood, such as the Waltz and Foxtrot, giving it elegance and style. That's the truth, Ruth. Herb Kent turned it into a distinctive dance when he started the sets @ the Time Square, Charlie Green came later, much later.
You don't know the origins of stepping unless you are from Kansas City. Kansas City has been stepping since the sixties when nobody else was doing it. We called it two stepping. Better ask somebody.
