This video was voted for by my Patreon supporters! Also I had to reupload this because for some reason Famagusta was in the wrong spot on Cyprus. No idea why, but I definitely had to fix that.
Internal rebellions, wars with Safavid Persia, wars in continental Europe (especially Long War of 1595-1611)... these all took a toll on Ottomans. These are why Ottomans halted their naval operations. Not to mention Battle of Lepanto (1571)
Admittedly, I don't necessarily know a ton about this war. However, I do know that the Ottomans suffered a pretty major naval defeat at Lepanto about halfway through the war. After that, it would have probably been harder for the Ottomans to take any other Venetian islands and hold them.
They did think about it. As the other comment said, that's when the spaniards decided to show up and turn their fleet into a dumpster fire, most notably in Lepanto. After that the Spaniards couldn't take Cyprus because the Ottomans had a way bigger land army, but the Ottomans couldn't take any more land because the Spaniards had a way bigger fleet. So the conflict just ended with Spanish peacing out under the condition that the Ottomans leave the rest of Venice alone.
I’m a Cypriot, I know you won’t see this but thanks for making a video about the history of our island, it has a lot of interesting history yet it’s not covered much by RU-vid channels
@@ZOMBIEo07islands tend to know their affairs better than distant mainland capitals. That’s why so many island nations like Cuba and Ireland have fought for and won independence.
Thanks for the video. It made me realise something: There were in fact more than one holy league... who knew? :P Wanted to make a league of cambrai joke but that whole situation went down 60 years prior. Oh well. Guess ill have to make some reading on the italian Early Modern Period.
@@BrayanPatiño-u5m You're right, was worried RU-vid would block the comment 😅. Turkish, though we also have supporters from the Greek community. Hope you enjoyed the lecture 🙂
@user-dh7ex4gu9q as a native Cypriot Turk, I can freely cross to the South via the border crossing. Whilst Anatolian Turks are not allowed, even if they were born and raised in Northern Cyprus.
That’s what happens when you’re protected by being a Byzantine vassal for 400 years before you’re strong enough to turn on them and take their most lucrative holdings
Excellent video! I noticed you included the border of Slavonia and Hungary Proper. For the sake of consistency, you could have also included the border of Slavonia and Croatia. On another note, I believe you accidentally illustrated the Jenő-Lippa area being under Transylvanian control. That area was only reclaimed from the Turks during the Long Turkish War.
