The OWON XDM1041 bench multimeter is relatively cheap at £110 or $160 when bought directly in China and new on the market. It has an unusual form factor which makes it perfect to sit at the back of my work table which is why I decided to buy it and over this and the follow-on videos, I try to decide if the XDM1041 is worth the money, if it is a peach or a lemon multimeter.

Thank you so much for noting Owon's lack of firmware support. I almost bought one of these but will look at Siglent instead. 👍

I receive mine two days ago, I am testing continuity, diode and DC only. For the price works very well to me. I like the bright display.
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave Год назад
I agree, the display is very good. I find it bright enough even if tone the brightness down quite a bit (down to 25% backlight) which is still plenty but easier on the hardware. A shame that you can't set it as default which is always 100%
@m80116
@m80116 Год назад
@@TheHWcave Mine retains that setting... along with enough power to power up and attempt to start even when UNPLUGGED. It boots up with regular (100%?) brightness and once onto the measuring screen it immediately applies the last used user selected brightness parameter. I'd steer very clear from the input caps when you disassemble this thing.
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave Год назад
@@m80116 Again, that is new. I just tested mine and it doesn't do that. But being wary of caps charged to VPP mains voltage is always a good idea.

@@TheHWcave Yesterday I bought the XDM1241 still waiting. I found a rare issue, I have various throughole desoldering stations, I have one older Hakko 808, if I plug the 808 in the same outlet, the multimeter restart each time when I press the suction botton. Still I think it is a good option, perfect for my needs. Best Regards.

@@treadmillrepair754 That would indicate quite a transient is generated by the 808 pump. It may be a good idea add some transient suppression. Some TVR diodes in your 808 may be a good idea to make it behave.

A nice device at a reasonable price. I think I will buy it as well. However, I will replace the fuses with good HRC fuses and retaining springs from Bussmann. The board is already designed for this, so it is done quickly.

I am going to de-solder - move - resolder two of the clips of the original fuse holders. The PCB has the holes for that but I need to buy the correct 30mm long fuses first.

I just thought you might be interested in knowing that in a new video of the XDM1241, the updated USB powered version of this meter, the analog board is on revision 1.3, dated 04-28-22 and the digital board is on revision 1.5 also date 04-28-22. The firmware is version 3.6.0. I do not know if the auto ranging and capacitance accuracy issues have been resolved as the video I mentioned is in a language I do not understand.

Hello, very good videos, just discovered your channel & subscribed! Do you still record with a Logitech C920 since your video about it? I didn't know webcams were still a thing these days. Apparently they are used by some livestreamers. What are the main benefits for you, compared to other camcorders/mirrorless/DSLRs that are available? Thanks!
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave 3 года назад
No I have stopped using the Logitech almost a year ago. The Logitech is now back to be used as a webcam, but with changeable lenses which is a very feature to have. The advantage of the Logitech is that the "footage" is automatically in your computer (or can be live streamed). Its a lot more hassle and expensive to do live streaming with a mirror-less DSLR. While I don't do live streaming, it is also hassle to upload the videos from the camera. The advantage of the DSLR is that the image quality is better and you can shoot away from your computer.

Great vids I got my usb one today from banggood took 8 days to the UK, I Have you tested the temp I am getting high readings with a k type from another meter, But it does seem nice very good display, The frq counter does go above 60mhz I am waiting for your other testing review, As I hope you have better meters to test it against, Than me, Thanks Dave

During a spot test, the temp using the K-type probe from a BM235 was within a degree of a thermometer that I compared it with, but I will do a few more checks. Does yours really have a USB port? Is that a real USB or basically a USB serial port (basically moving the RS232-to USB cable adaptor inside). Also what firmware version do you have?

@@TheHWcave Hi Thanks for getting back to me, i think the usb is just a rs232 to usb, as it has all the settings to set up for a com port, i will plug it in to the pc tomorrow , and see what chip set it has, the firmware v1.3.0, my temp reading is about 5d/c to high the other thing is it reads about 30d/c with nothing plugged in, what does yours read without the probe plugged in Thanks Dave

@@TheHWcave good morning, yes itis a rs232 to usb chip, it is the ch340, also what i did find with the temp is if the meter is cold and has been off, when you turn it on the temp reads correctly, but after about 15m-30min it then reads about 4-5d/c high when you tested yours had the meter been on for that time Thanks Dave, I will contact you on the eev blog, Thanks Dave

I suspect it was on for some time already. I saw today that its internal temp. (used for cold junction compensation for k-types) does rise considerably within the 1st hour or so. From 18.9 deg C from power on to 27 or so one hour later. I have not tested the temp. accuracy yet but its on my list
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave 3 года назад
@@davidbrowne1588 If you short the leads to read the internal (cold junction) temperature, it changes from 18.9 degC when the meter was off over night, to 27 deg C about 1 hour later. Interestingly it was not a smooth increase but in steps & step size was diminishing as it got hotter. That is totally weird. i need to repeat this a few more times. It is possible that the meter may lose its calibration. In any case it is advisable to make a dump of the calibration data onto your PC so you can reload it (I had to do that once while playing with hidden menus and accidentially starting the factory calibration routine). I used the program here: github.com/PetteriAimonen/owon-xdm2041-info/tree/main/bootloader which is for the 2041 but works just fine for the 1041

The usb power conversion is something they figured out by themselves also (or after they watched this video ofcourse). The XDM1241 is this exact meter but battery powered (usb-c chargeable) and usb instead of serial interface.
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave 2 года назад
Horses for courses as they say in the UK. I rather have the mains-powered version sitting on my bench and while I work on a project I keep it powered on for many hours. It is so convenient for a quick check of a resistor, or a voltage. I don't have to turn a hand-held on and off all the time and I don't need the accuracy of my "big" bench meters.

That's bad luck but can't you return it ? Anyway one of the reasons that OWON said that newer firmware updates are not available for older XDM1041 meters is that they changed the display. I guess that means you need to be sure to get the right display. For what it is worth, my (very early) XDM1041 has YYS37HV-133-A1 written on the LCD module.

@@TheHWcave I can't return it unfortunately. I will get just a partial refund and keep using it like that until I can find a spare display. The DMM version I have is the XDM1241, with batteries, and the display does not have anything written. Tried looking for YYS37HV-133-A1 in the internet but nothing came up. Anyway, thanks for kindly replying.

Friend, if the battery does not charge, just replace it with another one or if you lose some information or functioning of the device?
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave 2 года назад
Sorry, there must be some misunderstanding. There is no battery or charging circuit in this meter. I know that some folks converted theirs and added batteries. This would be very easy to do but I prefer using it as an inexpensive mains-powered bench meter that can stay on for hours while I am working on something.

@@arthurmead5341 You are right! I completely forgot about that one. Good point. I have not tried it yet but I think it is only used to keep the clock going and the data in the 1000 sample memory. Apparently a newer model of the XM1041 have a firmware that allows you to download the memory so it becomes actually useful. Sadly OWON has abandoned all earlier customers because they said there won't be any new firmware for the first generation, Way to go OWON!

Good chip, but shunt instead of thick film resistor network, no Bluetooth (then portable version has it + mobile apk, not so massive input protection (movs, thermistors, diod or transistors clamp), poor fuses with low breaking capabilities, I hope accuracy is good enough. Typical Chinese multimeter like uni-t (good accuracy/bad protection/affordable price)

Hello, did your copy whine? Mine is... and it's terribly annoying. I don't mind the cheap probes which can be replaced... although they're very bottom of the range as cheap as you can get and UNABLE to get reliable readings. And beyond the whining comes the loudest beep I've ever heard from a mutimeter, something that would drive me absolutely nuts in continuity check. I am returning mine for these two reasons... I've noticed it is quite slow even when fast sampling, but that was still acceptable for the price. But the whining and the loud beep are not. I don't plan any mod... my time is more valuable than this half baked product.
@TheHWcave
@TheHWcave Год назад
You must have gotten a really bad lemon. My meter doesn't whine at all and its beep is not too loud either. I think OWON changed the hardware quite often (abandoning all earlier buyers in that process as firmware updates no longer work). Returning it while you can is certainly the right thing to do.
