This is the fourth video in a series on my 2022 westbound through-hike of the 1200 mile Pacific Northwest Trail. It's a vlog that details my experience hiking the trail and tries to share some of the beauty and meaning that I found along the route. It’s meant to be comprehensive in terms of covering the whole trail, for those that like to ‘hike along’-- someday in the future I may put together a more traditional documentary about the PNT. But for now, I want to share as much of it as I can, and try to impart the series with informational and emotional context.
This part covers miles 185 to 250, from Yaak, Montana to Bonners Ferry, Idaho. This stretch had some great ridge-walking and plenty of little sights to see, and takes hikers from one of the more remote trail towns to one of the biggest. Unfortunately just before town I picked up some e-coli poisoning, but after recovering from that I headed out past the Kootenai river towards the incredible Selkirk mountains which are featured in the next video.

I'm blown away! These videos are amazing. Love your story telling, the soundtrack, everything! I also really like getting some insight into the towns along the trail. I don't live in the US and it's fascinating to see more what it's actuallly like there, and not just from a movie, you know. Looking forward to see more from you, Keegan. Thanks!

I hiked from Chief Mtn. to Bonners Ferry in 2019. I thought we had it rough managing the high rainfall that summer, but after seeing the snowpack you dealt with with I realize we had it easy. I don’t even recall seeing snow after Stoney Indian, and we hiked the Whitefish divide the same week you did that year. These videos are truly excellent. Thank you for taking the time to record your journey. I especially loved the creepy editing around crossing the Koocanusa bridge- it’s difficult to capture how those moments feel, but you did it in a such a creative way. The geological and cultural context you sprinkle in is also fascinating. I’m planning on doing a full thru hike of the PNT next summer (2024), and reliving my 2019 section hike through your videos has me totally amped. Can’t wait for the rest of the episodes. P.S. What camera & lenses were you using?

Hey there, thanks much for the comment I appreciate it! The 2022 snow year was definitely abnormal in Montana, haha. I filmed with a Panasonic GH6 and various lenses, I switched out a few over the course of the first couple sections as I tested out what I was willing to carry but eventually settled on the Olympus 8-25 F4, Olympus 60mm Macro (very light), and the Panasonic Lumix G 45-150. Since the GH6 is Micro Four Thirds, double all those focal lengths for FF equivalent. GH6 is a large camera but going M43 meant all my lenses were way smaller/lighter than full frame equivalents so it's a good setup for anyone who likes focal length variety. I actually carried the Panasonic Lumix 100-300 (so 600mm equiv!) lens in glacier, knowing I would likely send it back, which I did in Eureka, haha. I was hoping I would spot a grizzly bear, but oh well! The 8-25 is definitely the bedrock lens in my setup, most I've ever spent on a lens but I think it was worth it. I always like shooting wide in the landscape, I actually wish it went one wider like the 7-14 panasonic, but the versatility of wide angle to 50mm equivalent is pretty unique. One of the biggest things was how to carry all this, and I settled on two HMG camera pods (1 large + 1 regular), one for the camera and one for the other lenses. I also added shock cord from my shoulder straps for better suspension to help keep it from sagging down/jostling when moving, which I attached with mini carabiners, I also attached the camera pods with carabiners so they could be relatively easily swapped around.
