Episode 8 of the Paddle Pursuit with Theo Burn and Robert Norman. Theo has been in Chattanooga since the beginnings of the mighty Chattajack! He gives some history on its beginnings and progressions as a race participant. Theo paddles a little bit of everything and we touch on whitewater/Wildwater style racing a bit to broaden the paddle horizons we cover.

Love this interview and discussion format. I recognize you do it as a pod cast. But for this one especially I would have loved to see you flash a few pictures up for the various types of crafts mentioned that I haven’t encountered. And maybe a pic of the various races mentioned. I will go look up all that stuff now. Just my two cents there. Keep it up, I look forward to each of these!

Yep I need to work on my production value more. Rendering times for 60 minute videos is the hold up to add in little things, that like you said, the person can google in a few seconds.

Just a reminder that way up in the north we've got paddlers and races too. So although Chat a jack is a big and a great race, I think the General Clinton in NY is actually bigger in terms of paddlers. We've also got the Adirondack Classic and of course, the grand daddy of offshore racing the Blackburn Challenge. Feeling a little left out

Keep watching episodes... I got some NY, Michigan Pennsylvania and Western Mass people incoming. General Clinton is huge! I counted 250ish boats just now vs Chattajack had 483 total boats on the water. 250 boats all for canoes really is a gigantic event though. If it's any consolation my oc2 partner at chattajack this season has won Blackburn in outrigger and placed at the Clinton in c1... then I have a list of friends trying to get me to do the Adirondack!

2 and 4 man canoes are the most common boat raced inland, plus the occasional war-canoe, so the # of paddlers go up quick. I think there were close to 1000 at the last Genl Clinton. You need to interview John Mathieu of Maine. He's done it all; National team in C1, OC2/OC4/OC6 with a few MoloKais, big races in Europe and Canada where people paid to watch!!!! now he mostly races surfski and OC. Great storyteller too

I think if larger craft hit a smaller craft (ie. 6 person hit a 2) then DQ should be considered. Perhaps that would be a little "incentive" for competent steering. I had several ama come CLOSE to me on sup and fortunately was not hit

I enjoyed the conversation but respectfully disagree that Carolina Cup should revert back to a beach start for longboats. I can't see how thousands of dollars in collective boat damage and a bunch of immediate DNFs would make it a better race. Just because they do it that way in other big races in Australia and elsewhere doesn't mean it's the best way. We are lucky that the venue at Wrightsville can support a protected water start. As someone who does the Graveyard in surfski every year, I'm immensely glad not to have to contend with shore break (and the potential expense of damaging my boat). Ocean downwinding and surfing Mason Inlet already make the race fairly technical--every year I see lots of people fall in the inlet section (including myself), and even the race winner fell there last year. While you could argue that the Graveyard is the elite course and people like me should just do the Money Island 10K, there is something really unique and fun about paddling the open ocean that the Intracoastal just doesn't have. It's already a big jump to go from Money Island to Graveyard, so I'd hate to see making that leap become even more daunting for lower level paddlers moving up in the sport. This is just my opinion as a "bad paddler" coming in 20 minutes after the race leaders, so take it for what it's worth 🙂.

Rainbow River should be the kickoff for the northern paddlers, and the river deserves a big race event. Its essentially the on the threshold of summer paddling which means end of season for me. CJ31 is kickoff for me so it makes sense. Some people enjoy the threat of heat stroke tho, espically the local ultra runners.

Not a big enough venue for 100+ racers. We struggle with the 60-70 (coming from the guy that runs it now) Limited parking Narrow waterways for dozens of racers side by side

@@K2NOPS No problem, says the guy who doesnt run any race. Look at Safety Harbor's Best Damn Race. No room there but neighborhood parking plus a shuttle to a school parking lot and its all good. City is on board tho, thats the key. Btw, thats is thousands of people too
