El Greco, born in Heraklion, Crete in 1541 is not only one of the greatest painters of all time but also a Master Iconografer as well. In this video I try to copy the face of jesus from hia wonderful "Espolio". Its the moment before Crucifixion where the soldiers are about to rip the holy robe of Jesus.
Of course this is just a flimsy attempts to copy the Teacher and maybe learn something out of it. Copying the Masters as much as we can is a great excercise to become better icinographers ourselves.

This is a super random but did you use a regular canvas or a wooden panel which was a go-to for many artists of that era?

Antonis your work is really good. Maybe it would be beneficial to point out that in this case we do not pray to El-Greco's paintings since they are not recognised as icons in orthodox churches. Thus it is not an icon in the orthodox sense. It is a different type of art and has a different purpose. The icon has a very specific context.

You are so right Yianno!! I should have clarified that the connection to the byzantine tradition is not the painting of the Espoliovitself but the fact that Theotokopoulos was a byzantine iconographer himself before moving to Venice. You are absolutely right and thank you for sharing!
