@@spensersakurai Am I missing something, don't we pay top all this money to get great dynamic range and low noise, why add it back in in post? Thanks for the great content by the way, I always learn something from your videos :-)
@@colhutchins digital noise isn’t the same as simulated film grain. Digital noise, which often shows up heavily in chroma, adds unwanted and varied color random color data that isn’t very pleasing. Film grain tends to come across monochromatic as a luma-only addition. Aside from that, the idea is that you get a clean, low noise, high DR image so that you can do whatever you want to it. If you want it clean, it’s clean. If you want to dirty it up later, you can. If you want to create an HDR image, you have the dynamic range for it; but if you want to clamp it down to something smaller, you can. It’s about ✨options✨
I don't think people realise how god damn beautiful the 10bit 422 full V-Log footage looks straight out of this camera. I switched to the S5 coming from GH5 and I'm totally blown away. For less than 2k it's just insane.
I’m hesitant on upgrading because I have a lot of lenses for the gh5 and I feel if I upgraded I’d sort of be starting over with my kit and I have feeling that the gh6 may be something between s1h and the s5. Have you found yourself missing the gh5 at all?
I just sold my Fuji XT3 last week and got the S5. I love it. If I had one word to describe the camera it would be "thoughtful". From the touchscreen allowing you to change audio levels in headphones when you plug them in, to the small port on battery tray allowing a Dummy battery cable to pass through. It's made for filmmakers.
@@kingsamvisuals Because Fuji keeps playing with their video customers. They keep releasing those slow ass lenses with loud autofocus. Who wants a 15-36 F6 lens? Not me. So I sold it and went with Panasonic.
@@joshdiditt Just recently doing a comparison wheter to buy an XT4, A7III, or Lumix S5, from all of the camera, i think i fell in love with Lumix's Color, it is so beautiful.
@@DennisSchmitz It could be the lens too. Not sure that we have a fair comparison. To me just the workflow is a no-brainer with BM, even if it had slightly lesser image quality.
@@DennisSchmitz I own both and that’s more or less true. You can get them within 95% of each other, with two differences. The pocket 6K has noticeably less DR and the S5’s midtones look a tad less natural than the P6K. I would also like to add that the Pocket 6K’s image is naturally sharper that the S5/atomos, when sharpness is off on both cams
The S5 is a beast! I've been using it for the past half year, mainly as a b-cam / gimbal camera next to my rigged out BMPCC4k. Also have been using it a lot for smaller, more run & gun style shoots without a rig or gimbal :) Also for photo's it's quite amazing!
Hey mate, awesome to hear you love the S5. Is there a particular reason you chose it over something like the A7Siii? I'm trying to decide between the two. Thanks =)
@@itsryanwilkes Mostly got the S5 because of the price. + when shooting in BRAW on the pocket 4k you can change the color setting to o V-Log / V-gammut, so they match really great.
Great work as always. Since stumbling upon this last week, I was *blown* away and have been plotting to get the S5. I'm stunned that it might have a slightly higher dynamic range than bmpcc.
Next step should be for Panasonic to release a small multifunction camera like this with good internal NDs, then it ll really be tough competition for C70 and BMPCC6K Pro
Thanks for this man, love how you do the budget-minded approach. Def no need to spend more than $2k on a body these days for a lot of content creation. Picked up an XT3 last year and sold my a6500, partly based on your review and have been happy!
Impressive comparison. Very well done and the fact that you are in focus with the S5 in the contrary of the black magic that doesn’t autofocus... makes it all for this kind of video where you work alone without anybody to help focus.
The S5 is most likely going to be my next camera. Such an insane value overall for what you're getting with that camera! And DAMN, the image quality is gorgeous! Two questions though; Do you plan on keeping yours, Spenser, or was this just a rental for the video? Also how would you compare the S5 to the Fuji XT3?
Had the X-T4 for a short while and compared it to my S1H. The image out of the X-T4 looks plasticky, lacks tonality and has less dynamic range in comparison to the S1H (post firmware 2.0 NR -1) image. The S5 looks basically identical.
I have a feeling this has been asked before, BUT: have you thought about uploading your test files somewhere so people can take a dive into the footage in Resolve?
ProRes RAW files aren’t compatible with Resolve (direct competition to BRAW). That’s one of the most frustrating thing about it. So you would have to convert your footage into regular ProRes (loosing RAW), or image sequences like Cinema DNG (but it’s huge and very CPU intensive).
Love the S5 with the Ninja V... I am seriously tempted to sell my G9 and upgrade. Great video!! I currently shoot on the ZCam, but would love a backup option to it, and the S5 quality is impressive even if the lens cost the same price as a small volkswagen car
Now come on seriously guys that elongated out of focus to focus shot was absolutely beautiful. That is a creative tool right there and I’m absolutely not joking. It felt deliberate maybe it was?
Wonderful intro - very creative and true! Seems like a good value though I think the S5 is a little flat compared to the Black M. I love grain but that one didn’t feel organic - for better words. I would tone it down just a little. Great channel bro!
I just picked up my S5 today. I'm charging the battery right now. One thing that inspired me to get it was an AF hack that seems to work most of the time. I haven't tried it yet myself, but I will as soon as I start shooting. But, another YT-er demonstrated that after you get the AF box around the subject's head, you nudge the joystick on the back of the camera. At which point, you will see four notches on each side of the AF box in the monitor view. Apparently, those notches indicate that the AF is "locked" onto the subject's head. From there, it seems to hold focus as the subject moves around. I hope that does work. Because it would be a huge plus when I want to run and gun. Anyway...I will definitely look into getting the Ninja V for that 5.9K export option. I also have a BMPCC4K, which is awesome. But, I was looking for a full frame camera next. Hence, I picked up the S5. I hope to create content on the S5 myself in the coming days. Thanks again for your excellent content and review. Your footage looked fantastic as well. Cheers.
reminds me of 2015 when I first bought my sony a7s and NEEDED a atomos recorder just to do 4k. I'm over HDMI cables and relying on monitors just to get a certain resolution or file format
Kind of off topic but I absolutely despise ProRes RAW. I am on Windows, editing in Resolve and it grinds my gears every time it's the only flavor of RAW on a particular camera. I know RAW isn't everything and I'm happy with ProRes but come on that's like if a photography cameras RAW wasn't compatible with Lightroom.
Great review. I own the S1H and I am about to buy the ninja v. Would love to see a exposure guide from you for prores raw. How do you expose for skin in IRE for example, or how to expose darker scenes properly to minimize noise.
According to cine-d's labtest the panasonic s5 has a slighlty better dynamic range compared to the pocket 6k. Plus I do feel like the color science is more filmlike.

I love the images the S5 can produce, as a GH5 user, it really stands out as a potential upgrade, but the two things I'm holding out on are the micro hdmi mount and waiting to see what the GH6 could bring. What are your thoughts on micro hdmi's?
The only way I would use a micro HDMI port on a camera is with a cage and a solid HDMI clamp. There are too many stories of micro HDMI ports failing because the cable gets tugged or jarred. Micro HDMI is an odd choice for a camera like the S5 which is obviously intended for advanced or pro use. But then, they probably expect users to employ a cage with HDMI clamp.
Thanks for the video. Highlight/shadow relationships are considerably better on the Black Magic in this test. It's the difference between filmic and video-ish really. Cheers.
Thanks Spenser! That was a great overview of the S5. I have been a GH5 shooter for years and I lust for a full frame camera haha. I'm between the A7Siii and the S5. I mostly shoot documentaries, RU-vid content, and some ads for travel/tourism brands. Im sure a few others are trying to decide between these two cameras as well. Which would you choose??
Me too! I can’t find anything about it online, but it’s like a very minimal line, very occasional small glitch. Always on the same few spots. More anoying than anything and it seems to show up more on certain HDMI cables. As far I can see, the cable or input isn’t broken here. I saw that the signal quality has been upgraded in the latest ninja V firmware, but I haven’t tested it yet. We’ll see, it see, the glitches seem to have been reduced over a few updates.
LUMIX S5 VIDEO SHOOTERS PSA: Issue: Glitchy, pixelated lines in the image when using HDMI. Lines of different lengths appearing in different parts of the image a single frame at a time. Long story short. I have been chasing this issue for a couple of months now. Returned my original S5 for a new one, sent my Ninja V in for repair, was sent back with a clean bill of health. Bought the $60 Atomos cable, the issue persists. I originally thought the issue was unique to 5.9K ProRes RAW, turns out, that these lines show up when using the HDMI out in-general. The 12bit 5.9K ProRes Raw image out of this setup is unbelievably good and more than useable for any professional production. But this issue makes the camera impossible to trust for paid work when recording over HDMI. I have found many other users with the same issue, including a thread of comments here on Spence Sakurai's review of the camera. IF YOU ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE, PLEASE REPORT IT TO PANASONIC SO THAT THEY TAKE THE ISSUE SERIOUSLY.
I know the Nikon z6 series can shoot braw out to a black magic recorder. It would be worth a try to see how it performs as it has significantly better autofocus.
@@GameZBase that’s not the cameras fault man... he shot in raw and he graded that footage... he could’ve easily tweaked any off color situations but what you’re seeing is his grade
Thanks for the video, Spencer. Panasonic always bring great quality and value to the table. Now, if only it would output to BRAW. Time to revisit the sigma fp with video assist or hold out for BMD announcing full frame tilty/flippy screen pocket 6K Pro with internal variable ND this week? 🤞
I have stayed away from Panasonic because of their 2005 AF -- as a mostly solo shooter I don't need the worry. I won't be a customer for a Panasonic camera until they get hybrid AF. The other features of the Panasonic line are amazing ... but without AF, no deal.
Now, talking about full frame, the Sigma FP probably deserves a second review as the new firmware brings external ProRes RAW recording (via Atomos) and even BRAW via the Blackmagic Video Assist, plus some other update. Still no log profile though
I really wanted to like that camera, but the ultra low native ISO and the limited dynamic range really annoyed me in post. Working with the files, the potential was there but just shy of what was comfortable. At this point, I’d still rather have better DR with a smaller sensor than give it up for full frame.
@@ErrickJackson I see yes. I'm on the market for a new camera (S35 or FF with RAW capacities). I used to rent Red cameras and owned several Blackmagic but I really don't like the Pocket form factor, that's almost a no go for me. I was interested into the Zcam S6, but the raw is almost pointless, I will probably wait a bit and go for a komodo, my first choice,
@@FrankieDoguet I feel the same way. Love the pockets’ image, hate the form factor. I’d love to get the FX6 but as a staunch Davinci Resolve, I do not want to deal with it or any other camera’s Prores Raw codec. So I’ve practically given up on a raw shooting camera aside from the Komodo and may just settle for a good 10-bit codec. Because otherwise, the FX6 is perfect to me.
Eagerly waiting for the next firmware that is gonna bring all those video capabilities to the S1. Got it for less than $1300 so plenty of room for an Atomos.
Hello friend, congratulations on your work, keep helping the community. I'm curious to test a raw file on this machine would you have any to make available?
Why not the S1 instead with its full-size HDMI port? You want to keep a stable connection to that Ninja V. It's also a little beefier for more stable footage.
@Jerimiah Cook Panasonic is gonna release a firmware update this year with internal 6k recording, prores raw via ninja v and timecode via flash port 😊👍
Spencer! This is an awesome channel! The S5 is getting BRAW support this month. Would you be willing to try it out and show us your findings? I'm a Resolve user and I would love to know how the experience is shooting BRAW with the S5 and editing in Resolve.
I was wondering if you could explain a bit on how you went from ProRes Raw V-log.... to rec709? to final grade? If you don't mind. Did you use the technical rec709 from panasonic or did you color manage it? I've attempted using the CINE VIBES luts after some correction but... the results are SCARY 😅
I probably used a color space transform for this video. Cine Vibes account for a 2 stop exposure shift so it will darken images not shot using the LUT on the shooting monitor
Great video. I own a S5 and BMPCC 4K and have a hard time matching them. Basically, the orange-ish tinge in V-log is horrible. I see your video looks very clean and balanced (at 3.17). I can still see a bit of orange in the shadows in your ear but overall it looks very nice. How do you achieve this mate?
I swapped my C200 for an S1H with Ninja V a few weeks ago, and have no complains on the images. As for your ProRes Raw workflow, why not just shoot Prores 422? To my eye, they are identical, and instead of 1500mbps(ish), you get away with a 250mbps file that natively edits in all NLEs.
@@pedroblancou That's the same on the S1H. I would rather have 4K DCI Prores 422 than 5.9k Prores RAW, unless I really need the 5.9k for a project though. Then I would just shoot in-camera.
hey dude, loved that intro. i'll be honest, i'm just too lazy to look it up and that's why i'm asking here; can you also just record regular prores with the ninja? indeed quite a cool camera but i don't care about full frame enough to consider it over an xt-4. (or even an xt-3 when you just look at bitrates) actually a comparison between the s5's and the xt-3's internal 4k would be a pretty cool video!
Hi, Spencer! I really appreciate your videos! I was wondering if you had any tips for vintage lenses that would be suitable to this (S5) camera? Thanks again for your content!
Nice video! Also got the S5, I am not getting the ninja V unless Resolve implements prores raw. Internal codecs are still pretty good. Do you often use the xrite video color checker? I have been thinking about that one for a long time, but on an actual shoot day, I don't think I can use it due to time pressure(prores raw in resolve would be great).
It's important to mention that you can record prores 422 (or LT and HQ) with the Ninja and Resolve can use them without an issue. I'm DYING for Prores raw support in Resolve, but in the meanwhile, I'll be content with 422.
