I don't think I can convey the feeling of hiding alone in the copy room as a school goes in to lockdown. I was more worried about the students than myself. It ended up being a false alarm, but these things shouldn't happen.

18:41 - There's absolutely no way for me to say this without getting political, but the big reason why there were big changes after 9/11 and Oklahoma City, yet all the shootings are basically being answered with shrugs, thoughts and prayers, is that taking action against the former doesn't jeopardise the political donations of the NRA. To give a point of comparison, go and look up the case of Jake Davison, a mass shooting in the UK back in August 2021. There were "Only" 7 victims (5 deaths, two injuries), but after this incident, laws in the UK got changed so that officers now need to investigate the Social Media history of anyone applying for a license, and police were told that they needed to also check if any licenses needed to be re-looked at and possibly revoked under this new ruling. So yeah, this very much illustrates the big reason that nothing's changing in America - the people at the top of the food chain are being given extreme financial incentive to look the other way.

It made me so angry listening to his “apology” in court. How he can’t watch tv anymore - poor him! The people he killed don’t have that choice! 😭 I can’t believe that he wasn’t stopped, there are so many gaps that people like this slip through and it’s heartbreaking to think that this and the many other lads shootings could have been prevented.

For those watching the sentencing phase and saying Nik's calm demeanor now is because he's now properly medicated, go back and watch his confession last October. He hasn't taken any psyche meds for a year and a half, but what Nik has experienced is the highly disciplined environment of being in jail. Too bad the "system" (e.g. mother, et al) couldn't have figured out what it'd take with Nik before he killed 17 people. And of the 39 times the police were called to the Cruz house, Zach was responsible for 27 of those calls, along with Linda buying weapons for Nik. A lot of this tragedy had to do with 2 key stupid af people besides Nik.

Just want to start with a massive well done to you guys for doing a great episode, added the light moments in the right points! This had to be one of the most difficult episodes 💜 Columbine was tough, but this one was really hit home the most. That High Iron Diet was genius! I don't want to get political or rant.. but how can a country still protect its gun rights over its citizens! The stats you shared on how many shootings happened this year alone. What needs to be done to show them.. Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech... bloody Columbine should have been the last straws. Just to imagine how scary it must be to be in education in the US. No kid should have to practice how to stay safe and alive in a school. It genuinely brings me to tears thinking about it. I think this guy and the armed security guards are up there with the most hated people you have ever covered. Yes, I dont like any of the people covered.. but.. The shooter had two people that wanted to bring him up, they tried. The security guard.. I don't think any words or excuses can cover his part in this. Tom put it the best and he is right.. he shouldn't have signed up, you sign knowing you have a duty to protect. It does seem that they are making him look more dorky, look more of an innocent looking person in the trials. I think that's so so odd. This is a massive case of failure on the Mental Health services, when you added that quote "low risk of harming himself and others", each time just hit more and more into their failures. The failures from the police, the signs all were there, like his Aunt, calling on the day of his mother's passing. Plus the gun laws! Well done again guys! I listened to this at 5am before my amazing day of shopping, eating and having the best company for my birthday in Plymouth 💜 this one was deep, dark and really really upsetting, but it was still amazing! You guys have that midas touch, honestly can make the darkest things, turn them into content that can make me enjoy. Brings me joy! Ultimately comes down to him having access to guns there will be loads of similar weirdos in the UK but thankfully we don't as often have to deal with incidents like this

Rant Time: I’m an American student and we did have shooter drills. I haven’t had one since 8th grade (I’m a junior in high school now and the 3 years since then have centered around covid and the drills are against covid protocols) but I used to think that shooting drills were normal and that’s what students have been doing for years and that’s what the generation before my generation did, apparently they didn’t and I didn’t even think until listening to this podcast how terrifying it is for parents knowing there kids are having drills for something so preventable and scary for any parent, the murder of there kids AT SCHOOL could potentially happen. It is also so sad to think that an entire nation cares more about its gun laws than the safety of there citizens all because of the “right to bear arms” in the constitution but you don’t protect your house or go hunting with an AR or an AK. Home of the free indeed. (P.S. I love your podcast, I love how much research and detail you put into each case and involve a touch of humor)

The Department of Justice also classify gang shootings as mass shootings in those statistics so it’s not really a good measurement IMO. Basically, any shooting involving more than one victim is considered a mass shooting in those stats. But we do have a problem here not trying to downplay it at all. It’s a mental health crisis.

The whole Hashtag "Never Again" both saddens & infuriates me. I doubt it even had a chance to go viral before another mass/school shooting happened again!! I've seen a couple people mention this in the comments & it could very well be plausible. The reason he's much calmer, not spouting nonsense etc is because he's properly medicated & has a strict regime, implemented by people that won't take any shit from him. I do wonder about what diagnosis he has? I have BPD with Psychotic Symptoms, I have spent time sectioned & honestly from what my friends said when I first started slipping? They thought I was taking the piss, really poor taste jokes on my behalf kinda thing & then I had a full psychotic break a few weeks later. However with that said, there are NUMEROUS accounts of him being manipulative or violent to get what he wants, all sorts of bizarre shit in his Internet search history. I do find it hard to believe he was having a psychotic episode or perhaps Schizophrenic. He comes across more as a Sociopath to me, with some of his actions, the way he just didn't care how his behaviour effected other people etc. The whole oh poor me act seems just that an act.
