Did you ever hear the great "Hot Rod Race?" Written by George Wilson and recorded by Arkie Shibley in 1950, it inspired at least four follow-ups by Shibley and countless "answer songs" by others. I was just a little kid when this all went down, born about the time the original peaked at #5. But, I still can remember being in cafes with my parents and hearing the original or one of the others on the juke box. It went on for years. For folks into western swing, it was great fun wondering what chapter was going to come along next. :)
Because most artist don't record "stories" like Keen did, which makes him a great songwriter, who has been followed for decades, while the rest fade into obscurity after a couple of recordings.
The original has been my favorite since the first time I heard it. But it always left me feeling sad. This song is the PERFECT companion to the original.
I wrote one last verse, too .....but yours is good, too. .......... "Sherry drove down to the prison, where Sonny was sent to fry. It wasn't hard to get past the guard, she just showed a little thigh. She shot that guard right between the eyes with the gun hid in her purse. She slipped the keys right off his belt, and turned her Sonny loose. They both hit the highway in Sherry's shiny Benz.........the road goes on forever, and the party never ends".........................
Omg! Kit! You killed it! I hope Robert Earl has heard this! Very very excellent! I’m moved to tears! Oh, and I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but I loved the “chopper in the air.” reference.
Just came across your video even though it is nine years old. Love the ending of the song and how you wrote and played lots of entertainment my friend It put a smile on my face take care.
I'm glad that they got away! Thanks for curing my REK grief. Excellent ! Sonny was good with a pool cue, and Sherry was handy with a single shot .410 ! Bravo !
Dear sir I must say how much I appreciate and love this song I was raised by my Papa and nana before she passed I was raised on country music but this by by far is my favorite song thank you for doing this it means the world to me even my daughter knows the words God bless and thank you we truly needed this
So very great! I have loved the song for many years, and this is like a new icing! I too hope REK has heard it. So nice would be him having this guy on stage to finish with his verse. Glad I heard it!
I bought a "New Country" compilation album years ago, "The Road Goes On Forever" was on it, I had never heard it before. Loved it to bits and still play it today, in a heap of mainstream pop and rock it is my private treasure. Kit, I thought this just wouldn't work, but my goodness, it is superb and a worthy addition to the original - my hat off to you sir! Tim Jones, Corby, England.
Ahhoo! This is an amazing prolouge to the tale!! That highway man song In particular has always been my favorite and hearing this elevates the whole experience, wish I would've heard it sooner!! ❤
Love it! We lose our music if the road doesn’t go on.Tip my hat to you and let’s hit the floor dancing live as the party never ends. The followers are smart rears(prefer to call myself quick witted) and a sense of humor anyone can love. Thanks for this.
I'd love to see the next part of this song... sherry and sonny older in Mexico and now have a young teenager call Johnny and has girl call Marie who are in love.. But the life of sonny's lad Johnny likes his bombay gin and so the story never ends..
Kit thats absolutely great, the best follow up ive ever heard. You should think about getting with Robert Earl King and pitching this as a movie to some producers. With the right writers and actors (Sherry,, Kelly Riley of Yellowstone----Sonny,,, Charlie Hunnam of Sons of Anarchy) it would make one hell of a movie---or at least in my humble opinion,,,, again GREAT FOLLOW UP!!!!!
Heard “the road goes on forever and the party never ends” for the very first time yesterday.... so I can’t get that tune out of my head and then I run into this little diddy..... what a great weekend!!!! Now for someone to write the return from Mexico story.... cause the road goes on forever and the party never ends!!!!
Love it! Great guitar playing and awesome lyrics. When you mentioned the Texas boarder town, I thought you were going to tip your hat to Johnny Cash and say something about a little cabaret.
