Kyle Galner is such a horror/thriller GOAT. Haunting in Connecticut was soo fun to see in theaters. And I remember his episode in Cold Case where he was sort of a Columbine shooter. Did not watch the show, only that episode because I used to have a crush as a teenager

I first heard about him with this movie and started watching cold case a few months ago, since I love those kinds of shows and it’s set in Philly. And seeing him as that character shook me.

Ive really liked Kyle for years. He was great in Smallville as Bart Allen and played a really creepy psychopath in The Shield. He was the best part of the awful Nightmare on Elm Street remake. I cant think of anything ive seen him in that i didnt enjoy.

this is my favourite movie in 2023 easily. Johnny Berchtold was great with the spars dialogue he had to work with. He mainly had to work a lot with facial expression and body language. Kyle should get a lead role in a Scorsese or Tarantino film or something. He has the potential to knock something like that out of the park

The responses to fear are fight, flight, freeze or fawn. Randy is clearly in the fawn state for most of the movie, that being trying to appease that which (or who) is causing the fear. Happens to a lot of victims of childhood trauma. Makes sense for Randy to react that way.

I watched this last night and went in without knowing much, or even watching a trailer, and it was such wonderful storytelling, really gripping and intense. Kyle and Johnny carried it so beautifully, and it definitely felt like a play to me (and I would watch the hell out of a role reversal remake). Thank you for this interview, it was insightful and fun-really appreciate getting to know more about the film and the process 🙂

Gettin’ great Ky-Gall recommendations from these comments. My partner first got me into him with his excellent Criminal Minds episode, but I kind of already knew him from his roles in the original Wet Hot American Summer and Red State. He was great in Scream 5 and Smile. Such a prolific actor…we cheer every time he pops up.

It kinda disappointing they didn’t get talk about the stuffed animals I’d like to know if there was any talk about the significance of them. I think there definitely is, like I think benson wanted to be a giraffe because they can see out past the walls of their enclosures. It’s really cool that you all talked about the small town aspect of it which definitely supports that idea. Idk maybe it’s kinda obvious I just don’t see anyone talking about them, and if they do it’s just that it only symbolizes the innocence that was taken from him. I think the stuffed animals actually tell a whole lot

i just watched this last night, and i got some indication that benson was possibly queer. idk if i'm just reading into things, but how he asked randy if he was gay, his outfit, and how he seemed to interact with randy fed into it for me. he talked to him like they were boyfriends in an abusive romantic relationship. ofc how you dress/present shouldn't be the only indication that someone's queer; clothes are gender less and fashion is for everyone. i think it was the fact that benson lives in a rural small town and is wearing that cardigan, and for me, especially with a movie like this, almost everything(dialogue, clothing) can be used to add to these characters stories. that's also not what the movie is about, but it'll at least be my head canon

I watched this movie based on the idea of having Kyle Garner in it. Inwas genuinely surprised at how tight paced and written the film was. I absolutely love that the movie barely holds your hand and allows you to learn as the characters learn. The opening was a very visceral and haunting start. It took me by surprise even though you know he will do something violent. It felt larger than life, yet very real as the opening lets the action fill the moment. The almost lack of score helped it pack a punch. From there one would expect a Devils Reject kind of story, instead you’re invited into a more somber grounded story. One that isn’t hell bent on the violence, but rather telling a story of two lost/broken people. Who ultimately learn for the better through the horrible tale. The ending, I thought was beautiful. As it really hits home the trifecta of the good, bad, and the ugly. Ultimately leaving the viewer happy, while somehow respecting what Benson has done. The best way I could describe this film is it is the typical “Ghost teaches Scrooge how to be a better person” but under the umbrella of possible true to life experiences. Showing how people grow through accepting truth, the awkwards, and horrible experiences of life.

Great interview and The Passenger was a great movie. I love Johnny's admitting to watching abandoned and dead mall videos on RU-vid. I do, too! Kyle rightfully get a lot of praise for his intense performance, but Johnny's was equally as important as the ying to that yang, and he did a great job, too! And also a short observation but Kyle is a real one, having the mind to mute his mic when he coughs at 20:11. It's a very small thing and sometimes can't be helped in the moment, but that struck me as super considerate.
