I've been eyeing this kit for awhile now. I went ahead and dropped the cash to find out if it holds up to all the hype. The kit I bought came with all kinds of good stuff plus plenty of room to add your own stuff
When mine arrived, the molle straps would not stay snapped. I contacted Pathfinder just to let them know and I could still use it. They immediately sent a new bag an said to keep the "defective" one. So I now have a good spare storage bag. Great customer service Pathfinder has....
This is a wonderful kit and the quality can not be beat. The canteen is a wide mouth and that allows for easy cleaning, plus, you can see that it is clean which is very important. Having a cooking kit with water supply is brilliant. The bag allows for enough room to add a fire kit, spoons and gloves.
My best friend bought me this kit a few years ago and I love it. It resides on my battle belt (w/a harness) hiking set up and has never failed me. The place you're at in this video reminds me of a place I hike into on the No. Platte River in Western Nebraska with the geese and the wind!
I bought the same kit and yes, it is a lot of money (I live in germany and had to pay extra for shipping and customs office). But I wanted to have that kit so much. I love it. It has got the best canteen cup I ever had. Maybe I will replace the shoulder strap, as you said, it is too short. Instead of water purification tablets I will put a Sawyer Mini water filter in the kit, because the filtered water tastes much better from a Sawyer. Atb, Christian
Enjoyed watching your video and really appreciate the message about being responsible and safe with your fire. Also I completely agree with your point on needing a longer adjustable strap. Hopefully some of the folks that can make that happen are watching.
Justin thanks for another great video. I saw your video where you make your fire starters. I totally agree with you on not buying them. I got to making some myself from old candle wax & they work great. Take care and keep enjoying the great out of doors.
The best review i have seen so far about this kit. True words at the beginning and at the end of the Video 👍🏼 i wanted to buy it for long time now and saw it for a good price online last night. I think this will be my womans christmas gift for me 😂. Thanks for the Video. Greetings from Germany ✌🏼
Another cool video! I had just ordered this set. It was a relief to find out its worth the money since I haven't recieved it yet. I keep hearing its a diesel set up. Keep up the good work brother!
You mentioned the short length of the strap and I don't know if you have already addressed this problem but I often add the larger size key-chain rings, or small carabineer's, to the ends of the straps. That usually fixes my length problems. I'm 6'3". Sure is a nice system. Good quality items are always a bit more. This SS canteen system seems to be thee standard these days.
nice video, i just started getting into bushcraft and survivalism, and i stumbled across your channel, you are down to earth, enjoyable, and knowledgeable keep up the good work!
i like the idea of using this system with a y harness, my biolite stove, and the bottle system under my sleep system in my bag. thank bro. keep em coming.
Good review. I had no idea that ferro rod set up came with the micro infernos. I just checked mine..surprise! I have just the canteen, cup, and stove with the basic pouch and I like mine a lot. I wish they had this whole set up when I bought mine.
the pouch looks like a rothco pouch I own. And is made very well if it is a rothco. At first look I thought the clips on the shoulder straps could have been a bit better. but I've been using it for around 8 months with no problems. Solid pouch! Will be buying this canteen kit soon. good video!
Just bought this bag and mini infernos. I'm going to make a different kit but the bag is perfect for what I'm going to do. Well built and I love it so far.
I have this kit as well, i'm very happy with it and like that i can make the bag a mini day kit. I even use it as an edc whenever we go out for a drive or outings. Great review! Aloha
Looks like a nice kit and i do like their quality . With that said i use the Stanley adventure set with a 5 dollar ozark trails cup. I use this with an alcohol burner and mini stove all put into a condor carry bag. I use my 70's vintage cutlery set as well as a p38 can opener and fire starting stuff.
I agree 100% about one's right to spend their own $ how they so choose! What I have a problem with is the number of YT video bloggers who carry on like bushcrafting can't be done w'o a $150 axe or a $300+ waxed canvas backpack or a $100 tarp! I was quite relieved to hear your comment about the gatorade bottle/stanley cookpot alternative! Good video!
Nice review, Justin. I appreciate the detail of the discussion. I really like the potential use of the bag for a day-hike. Thanks. Trust your having and good weekend…. It's still warm in east Texas. ATB …. Ken
I have some ice tea spoons with large bowls.. They are th perfect size for this use and weigh no more than th titanium.. For me they are perfect and cost nothing.. I get it that you guys can afford your toys and have fun using them.. However, some of us have a much smaller budget and must make do on less.. Second hand stores, flea markets and yard/garage sales can provide many use things.. Re-purposing found items is fun too and rewarding..
Mrhycannon I completely agree. Most of the time I can't afford the expensive stuff either so I take full advantage of yard sales and places of those nature as well. Thank you for watching.
you are the smart one. they are just overpaying so that their overbult canteen can come with a pocketbook to carry it around in. you are doing the smart thing.
cool i love this set... thanks for the review.. i might some day give my crusader kit with the same pouch to my girl if she ever gets into hiking more... love it... i do the same thing with mine..but so much room to expand i did a review a long time ago and these days i keep the same stuff but have added so much there is so much room in that pouch... emergency blankets faro rods small flashlight knife caribereners soups coffee tea creamers broth match case cumpass cordage covers every thing even bug repellent and baby wipes for tp... cool thing is its only half full.. hole day hikes no problem..
You don't need a big fire. Build a twig fire in the stove (standoff). The stove also works with heat tabs and alcohol stoves. The canteen, cup, and stove are perfect. They stow away compact and a US Military canteen pouch fits fine. I prefer the Helikon-Tex E&E pouch. The canteen fits better and there is still room for extras. As far as purifying the water, the neck for the canteen fits the MSR water purifiers. I carry both the canteen and a Nalgene plastic bottle. Boiling water is nice if you only need a quart, but if you need more a purifier is faster and better. Chemicals and filtering water through a rag works, but using a purifier has no taste.
I’m somewhat nervous and move to fast in the woods so a fire keeps me rooted and gives me comfort . Here in Montana you can take wet snow on those days ,shove into the canteen and heat it up. Just bought a new system in the cover for $ 10. Pawn shop 😊
Although a little bit lengthy, I thought this was a great review. Very informative and straightforward, no off the topic rambling for the most part. Would recommend this video to anybody considering this canteen.
you can try to piece together (just the metal pieces) with mil-surp stuff and you’ll get pretty close to the same dollar amount - but the pathfinder canteen is better and the cooker/stand is also better
First, Thank you for your time, work, and effort for showing us the Canteen Pathfinder. Just next time bring some gloves every time you go out camping. Just saying.
Cool bein mentioned in your vid again brother. The Light My Fire Grandpa's Fire Fork can be used for: moving coals around your fire, spear hot dogs/sausages and such to cook over the fire, and I sharpened em up right well for a frog gig. I'm sure there are many other things yiu can come up with as well.
I’m also from Kansas and I just got the water bottle kit from Dave just haven’t got to go out and try it yet but in the couple weeks I will can’t wait.
Good review looking to get two canteen kits as that would suit my water needs just debating between TI SS or even the bottle kits, my Stanley's are just too bulky and don't nest compact .
I won't be buying it. I have enough junk. My standard us army canteen, canteen cup and stove stand does the trick. But good video. Very professional. This guy has a lot of knowledge and skills.
Your area looks very similar to one of the places I go to on the No. Platte River in Western Nebraska! Funny I do the same thing to my fires as you said you would. I'm looking to get the smaller kit with the canteen pouch and not the pack bag. I'll pair it with my Maxpedition Thermite (5-C) drop leg pouch for light day hikes! I have access to plenty of Fatwood, but not Birch Bark.
its a good kit, i like how you set it up, and like you said someone on a budget can basically copy that for less money, absoloutely, heck a tin coffee can and gatorade bottle like you said and some small cheap utility pouch and you have an economy version of it but i do like the kit, its built to last thats for sure, all that stainless steel and heavy duty utility pouch is gonna last a good long time, dave canterbury doesn't mess around.
Great vedio ! The bag is A 1 awesome so good I bought a black one for edc ! The cup you have to wacth mine didn't lock! I had to bend a few things. Chinese quality control ! It is a realy good decent quality kit!
Finally. ...a every day guy eho made a video, that ess straight to the point. Thank you! !!! I to not a tiyvh man but I would like one piece kit that id a little treat for me. Is this kit that one? I think yrs. From what I saw, I think I can justify it. I have been looking for a wide mouth canteen ever since I sae y hr UMC ones for thier winter survival class' that you can't find now where' Thank you souch truly was a great and helpful video. !
Pathfinder store is now selling an ABS replacement cap for the bakelite one (6 bucks). If you accept advice from random strangers on the internet, mine is that you pick one up. The bakelite seems sturdy... until you drop your canteen full of water. My heart sunk when mine exploded from a ~2.5 foot drop to shag carpeted floor. I was really disappointed, but then really happy when I was able to get a replacement... and then really wary about relying on that canteen for anything more than an afternoon fishing... and then really happy again when I noticed the ABS replacement on pathfinder ;)
Awesome video bro. Great review. Looks like a great kit and with the quality and what it comes with its probably well worth the money. I wouldn't mind having one and maby one day I may get one but for now that $100.00 is a lot of money and there's alot more I want that will probably come first. Also if you ever need any fatwood just let me know. It's plentiful around here and I wouldn't mind sending you some. Thanks for sharing. Robert
I really appreciate that Robert, and thank you for watching. It really is a nice kit but it is certainly one of those ones that you can get by with plenty other options. If you ever break down and get though, you will love it. Jusitn
i went with two stanley two cup sets and one of the round cup, canteen and stove sets from pathfinder and two trangias that i will mix n match to stack and carry for 3 pple. adding a coupple of water bladders. bottle spreader, trangia cross bars. plane break line cable for the cross bar. done deal for fire or stove setup . maybe a piece of aluminium pie tin to help windbeak.
Get yourself an insulated lunch bag (nylon. foam insulated.velcro closure. 4 dollars. re-usable. about 2 ounces). Put your freeze-dried meal pouch in that before adding the boiling water. Let it re-hydrate for 20 to 30 minutes. It will taste MUCH better and will still be too hot to eat without burning your tongue. . . . even down to the last bite. Works even better when the ambient temperature is below freezing . . . .
Hey man if you could would you be able to put links up for that kit and some of the extra's that you put in with it if you have the time and are willing to. Please and thanks!
I've been keeping an eye on this since it came out, finally pulled the trigger, got mine today. A couple of observations..the price has come down a bit since initial release. You can get the canteen cook set with the cheap 3 dollar cover (not the cover you have) for 59 bucks. That made a big difference for me since I already have a maxpedition canteen bag. I was willing to shell out cash for the cook set, but have no use for the extras included in the more expensive kit... already covered. Keep an eye on that hinge pin that connects the cup handle. Just unboxing mine and opening it up, hinge pin fell out. I put a slightly more aggressive bend in the pin and tapped it in with a steel punch, it should be set now. Second, and you ran into this issue too. The lid for the cup is very* tight and snaps in place. You definitely won't want to struggle with prying that sucker off with boiling contents in the cup, not a big deal to bend the lid out a bit. Glad I did that before initial use. I noticed the lid had a made in China sticker on it, not sure about the rest of the kit. Good video, just subscribed.
This is no endorsement of anything, but just to clarify, I believe the $20-something lid is the "heavy cover" which is, as the name indicates, quite heavy. It has strain-holes and a high polish belly which serves as a signal mirror. That's why it's so much $. I don't own this kit, but have been researching it and have wanted it for a while. I do own the grill stand that I use with my Trangia. Thanks for your review, my friend.
***** update: got the canteen set like yours for my husband. Anded two pathfinder poncho tarps for a nice mini kit. Thanks again for your help and video
I can testify this product. Not the bit on the bottom. The water holding bit we called the fire bucket as we called it in south African army 40 years ago It works. I still have it and I would like to see if it is possible to produce cheaply in titanium
You can build a fire 🔥inside the stove, it works just as good or an alcohol stove ? Use wood 🪵or alcohol 🍸in the stove...The handles won't get as hot ....The canteen cup and stove is the way to go, I use the plastic canteens...All types work and if you use pocket rocket stoves ,the canteen cup and stove will always give you a backup plan if you run out of fuel ? Yes , and being miles in the wilderness, IT FEELS GOOD TO HAVE A BACKUP PLAN ?
First of all, I like your knife and saw combination. It's what I carry. Your insights about the kit are spot on in my view. The kit is expensive for what you get, but it is, by no means, a rip off. Most of Dave's stuff is relatively expensive; still everything that he offers seems to fit nicely within his philosophy, with a few exceptions. Personally, I usually cook, instead of opening a pouch and adding hot water. On the other hand, there are situations where pouch food is the ticket. Consider a situation where you are traveling on a motorcycle and stop at a highway rest stop. You probably won't have the option of starting a wood fire. What you really need is some sort of alcohol stove to heat your water. I think that would be a viable addition to the kit. You can build your wood fire when you arrive at your camping destination, assuming that fires are allowed. And that is not a given. Anyway, for me, the addition of military style mess kit would probably be the better overall solution.
I saw the plasic clips and plastic d rings right away. I've worked construction long enough to know the plastic clipa do not last. I heard the Aleutian geese.
I wish you had used the stove as I think was intended. That would be setting the stove on the ground and then just building a stick fire inside it. I do see that it worked well, but building a smaller fire just inside the stove means less fire to put out.
Ian Deakin I can see that they may not have wanted to attach it due to some will boil water in it but a simple piece of paracord and your set. Thank you for watching sir.
Where does the spoon come from? Tell me more about "Tavis's" spoon. (all I noticed) :D Also for cheap firestarter what I always did since scouts when someone showed me, is just save you drier lint, look for cheap candles on sale. mix on teh stove in an old pot, and then mold bricks or cut sticks etc. Wax plus lint is easy to make, and works well. Also any army/navy store has that style strap with metal clips for about 5 bucks. Probably been in use since Vietnam and will work for another 50 yrs.
Since the canteen itself is metal, could you use it over the stove to boil larger amounts of water if needed? I know its kind of a dumb question but I was wanting to know if the canteen would warp or anything like that.
Really great review. I recently purchased the water bottle cook set and alcohol stove from Self Reliance Outfitters and love it. I still haven't decided on a spork/eating tool to replace the very crappy set that came with the kit. I like that Toaks one you were using. Maybe I'll opt for that. Thanks for the vid. Just subbed.
Great video brother I have been getting into bushcrafting a lot here lately. Is there a link you can put down on where you purchased this kit from? I’ve looked around online but I can only find the casing in black :/ I was hoping to find a nice tan one like yours or even. Multi cam colored one would be great. Or if anyone on here can help me out I’d really appreciate it thanks again.
You've had this for a few years now. Are you still happy with it ? If you could only buy one kit of Dave's Canteen Kit or the Bottle Kit, which one would you buy now? And would the weight difference between the two matter to you, for a long hike ? Thanks for the review. It was in depth and made sense. I agree about the plastic clips and the length of the strap.
I still LOVE this kit! If I'm camping it goes every single time but if I'm going on long hikes I tend to leave it behind due to weight or I just bring the canteen. If I had to choose today between the two I would still go with this set here man. Great canteen set. I just wish it came with a boiling lid. I had to purchase mine separately.
+grierwolfe wait so this pouch came with the set? ive done research and it doesnt seem like it, did u buy this from canteen shop or the pathfinder store?
At 2:50 he said (on Nov 14, 2013) it was "dang near a hundred bucks". Take a look at Dave's page www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/campfire-survival-cooking-kit/ and you'll see it listed WITH the MOLLE Shoulder Bag for $79.99 as of Aug 2, 2016. But Dave's page for JUST the Canteen Cooking Set is listed for only $59.99 at www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/canteen-cooking-set/ and, ... then there's shipping cost. So, I hope that information clears up your confusion.
+Michael Hodges I got mine off of amazon. Here is a link. www.amazon.com/TOAKS-Titanium-Handle-Spoon-Polished/dp/B00J1BV01C?ie=UTF8&keywords=titanium%20spoon&qid=1464004854&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1
Hey just my thoughts here 4u 2 think on doing yourself...when you heat water to boil, try putting the stove next to the fire buried in coals, thus leaving the handle alone sticking back from the coals &away from the heat source boil times pretty much the same in time and gloves if need be? Should be all one would ever need to picking up the cup with boiling water. And placing on a regular gas stove works the same off to one side leaving the handle in the coolest of area thats being heated fyi. Like always peace, love, & prosperity. C-ya. & be safe out there & always blessed in everything you do.
the 1st time i watched this video was years ago now. since then i bought a bunch of SRO's gear... a whole bunch of it, too and i've used a lot of it a lot over a good time period... my take on the SRO's stuff... 1st-off it's a little bit over-priced and 2ndly: the canteen kit is alright. however, compared to a standard GI canteen with canteen cup and the price of both, the SRO gear is no big deal to me personally. #1 that canteen is welded-up in seams and for mine for me, i don't want to put it in the fire. plus, i have no need to put the whole canteen in the fire in the 1st place. as a kit though with the bag and all the SRO's canteen kit is ok. for me personally same goes for all of the rest of the SRO's gear i have.... it's all ok, but no big-deal type of thing one way or another. the size of the canteen and the big mouth on the canteen are pluses to me. all of this goes for the bottle kit too. the bush pot is ok and good, but wal-mart has similar in SS and it's only $10 and you get 2 pots with 1 lid. price-wise the WM pots are a better deal to me. i don't personally like the holes in the SRO's cup and i don't want to hang it over the fire, either but each to their own. i had one of those stanley SS cups with the lid... it has welded seams in it too and those seams broke loose on my stanley cup. so, i'm not big on welded together SS camp cooking stuff. make it one piece and thicker.... i would like that a lot better. slim chance a SS canteen or bottle made by anybody will be one piece though. i do have a SS water bottle i like though.. it's a Nalgene SS bottle, but for me i don't put it in the fire anyway, either. a regular old plastic GI canteen with a old SS cup works fine for me when it comes right down to it. that SS SRO's GI canteen cup lid i like too. in my experience for me you get too fancy and expensive it's not that much better and the stuff won't last as long, either. other than for water stuff or eggs i don't need cooking stuff anyway most of time and i camp a lot because it's easy for me.... i live in the country on a farm. thx4vid!
Nice review my friend. Thank you. I've been contemplating one of those kits. Add a Sawyer mini squeeze filter kit. It would be the perfect complement to that setup and takes up very little space.
It's nice to hear you say that man because I was thinking the same thing. I've been thinking about picking up the minni one since you and a few others told me about it.
