i find this subject so morbidly fascinating and horrifying. pretty much everyone knows how miserable it is to have insomnia. the idea of NEVER being able to sleep again is just... ghastly.

Our friend died from this. I remember her asking me for advice about how to get more sleep prior to her devastating diagnosis. She only lived a few months once diagnosed. She was descended from the family in Italy that had this disorder. She left behind young children. Horrible to watch her deteriorate.

I know I'm playing into it, and I know this is a strange place to rant about it, but what is actually going on with these people who race to be the first comment? Is your life and your head really so empty that chasing something as trivial as that is how you purposefully choose to spend your time? I don't know why it gets under my skin so much, but it does.

I can imagine what it’s like just because I have sleep problems. Accumulated sleep deprivation has made me unable to hold conversations, get lost a lot, become depressed, have chronic pain and dream while awake. Ugh I couldn’t imagine it worse so that’s really wild

Actually Corke's illness lasted almost 2 years. He started having sleeping problems in the spring of 1991. By Christmas, 1991, his mental decline became apparent and shortly thereafter he was wrongly diagnosed with MS. His condition deteriorated through 1992 and he was admitted to the hospital in the fall of 1992. For the last 6 months of his life he didn't sleep at all. He died in March of 1993,

Simon, thanks for this one. I don't have any personal experience with this subject, but I happened to use it as a crutch "deus ex machina" in a story I wrote. I needed a character's parent killed off, but I wanted it to happen subtly and relatively quickly without a lot of explanation. This rare disease became my solution, so I decided to study up on it so I can be as accurate as possible so the content isn't obtuse to those who suffer from it.
