Great video, as usual! 👍 I've been using t3nka Neutral+ for a while now, with vibrantDeck vibrancy set to 130. Regardless of extra draw distance etc., this by itself makes the game look amazing. I've also lowered max cpu clocks to 2400 (TDP 10), which keeps the Deck cool, fans silent, and further boosts battery life. 🙂

Many thanks for putting this effort in. I just wanted to note, we also tried 540p here to try and get a bit more battery life, but the loss of fidelity is indeed hard to live with. What we are doing though is using a custom resolution of 80% (1024x576), added manually to the settings file for the graphics mod. That might not sound like many more pixels, but the results are subjectively so much better than 540p that I just wanted to point this out. With distant fog turned down a bit, FPS++@30 and no other (cemu) tweaks, we're getting around 2.5 hours runtime with this and solid performance.
@cryobyte33

Question, I've had EmuDeck installed for a while now. It installed 1.27.1. I can't find any documentation on Emudeck moving to the later 2.0 build and Updating it through EmuDeck doesn't update it. Do I need 2.0.25? At the time it was noted as unstable so EmuDeck stuck to an older version. I also don't want to break GyroDSU if possible.
@cryobyte33
@cryobyte33 Год назад
I personally had 1.27.1 installed prior to this video. What I did is go through the EmuDeck launcher > Custom Install > deselect everything except for Cemu. This forced EmuDeck to only give me the option for which Cemu to install, and it persisted my settings. Some users seem to have issues with Gyro on 2.0-25, but mine worked perfectly during testing, so I'm not sure if they have the wrong input device selected or something. Regardless, thank you for watching, and I hope this helps!

I did have to change sound settings to Direct sound, defaulted to Xaudio2 and that didn't even see the audio devices. Went with the battery saver settings. Wowza the improvement is crazy. I used to not quite get 30fps at 15-16 watts and now it can lock 30fps at 11-12 watt depending on the area. Thanks again!

I’ve been having an ongoing graphical/game breaking issue from my Wii U dumped copy. Whenever I start the pray to the statue at the Temple of Time cutscene, Link ends up falling through the terrain and dying. Another example being the first tower cutscene with the old man. I've been using emulators since 2000. I gotta say, I really love your channel for how in depth you are and how well you explain things. I am curious about something though. Would it be possible in the future for a channel like yours to have a steam deck program where we could tell it what game we're running and have it be able to select different settings modes from a drop down menu and have those applied to our consoles? So if it's BOTW we could just go to your tool and select that game and then choose between your Pretty vs Prettiest etc. and have that quick change all our settings to match. Thanks for all your hard work!
@cryobyte33
@cryobyte33 Год назад
Hmmm, it's definitely possible, but the biggest problem would be long-term support. Some games store their configs with the saves, so I'd need to be able to find where the prefix/files are, then replace them entirely with correct versions. I'd definitely be interested in doing it, but I don't think I could commit to it while working a full time job 😓 Regardless, thank you so much for watching, it's good to know that even emulation veterans find the content helpful!

I was having trouble with framerate after setting everything according to your 'smoothest' recommendations. The performance overlay revealed that 4/8 CPU cores were being maxed out, while the others were barely being used. I fixed this by updating CEMU from 1.27 to 2.0 and restarting the Steam Deck. (In the EmuDeck program, click "Tools & Stuff". There's an option to update emulators, and you can choose the specific version, at least for CEMU.) It's all smooth now. I didn't do any controlled testing, but I'd guess CEMU 2.0 is indeed able to make smarter use of all 8 CPU cores. That could be the cause of your surprising SMT results, as well as the reason that people online previously recommended the trick. If 1.27 was maxing out just 4 cores, then the SMT trick could give those poor guys a little bit more power. But with 2.0, the SMT trick makes things worse because you're forcing it back into the 1.27-esque paradigm. Did you notice something similar in your testing (re: 1.27 only using 4 cores, even when all 8 are available), or was it just coincidence that my problem resolveds after I updated CEMU?
@cryobyte33
@cryobyte33 Год назад
Hey, thanks for watching and the detailed comment! I DID notice something similar, but after rebooting my Deck 1.27 started using all cores. I think that it was a PowerTools bug, but I can't reproduce so it's hard to be sure 😅

Great video, was waiting for it :) But I have one question; if 1080p runs better than 720p, why not force the deck to run in at that resolution even in handheld mode? If I'm not mistaken, the higher internal resolution would also help the game look better, even with the 720p screen (battery life would be impacted though, I think). Again, great video and thanks for your work!
@cryobyte33

Is there any use to using 1600x900 for the resoltuion? I found BOTW on the switch itself in handheld mode to be very... "crispy" so im hoping I can elevate that... Also is the difference between "prettiest" handheld and "prettiest" docked the same other then battery lie? Im handheld mode but pretty much always at a wall charger using the deck? The performance will be the same though in terms of FPS? So if im by a plug Prettiest Docked would probably be best for me yeah?
@cryobyte33
@cryobyte33 Год назад
You definitely can use the higher base resolution, but since you'll be downscaling for the Deck's screen you won't really notice the extra pixels. As for "prettiest", the non-docked preset looks better but the docked preset runs at 1080p, ideal for external displays 🙂 Thanks for watching!

Hey Cryo, Awesome video, I am a bit late to the party which made me enable notifications because I don't want to miss another video like this time. I just had a question! At the start when you show your CEMU settings you show off the Graphics Packs tab and I see that the "Graphics" setting has been selected, when looking at the "Smoothest preset" I see no mention of the "Graphics" tab in Graphics packs so I should I disable it or enable it and set everything to default. I haven't experimented but would enabling be beneficial because of the ability to change resolutions (Or does CEMU run 720p native so enabling is void) or are the default settings actually detremential because they aren't "native default" rather they are the "Graphics packs default"? Also did you try using experimental Protons with both CEMU and BOTW added via Steam ROM Manager or just the default/normal Proton? Finally when should I look out for your update to the CryoUtilities plugin that includes the Huge Pages restart "fix"? Seems like an invaluable tool for someone as forgetful as me. As a side note (I know this comment is getting long and my formatting is to be desired) for some reason on my CEMU (2.0-25) disabling SMT and leaving it with 4 threads made my frame rate more stable and sometimes increased it (never decreased it)... I know for a fact my testing was far less thorough then your own perhaps my install has not been updated with the latest clock times like you mentioned (might be getting the terminology wrong and cant find a time stamp). Thank you for this video by the way, I had transferred all my BOTW files and save files over to my deck when it arrived but haven't had the motivation to play because of the performance, this video has definitely come in handy to have setup so when I do inevitably get bored on a long flight and such I have some entertainment!

Hey, welcome back! Let me address each concern one at a time: Graphics pack on "Smoothest": The only setting used in that pack on the smoothest preset was the resolution at 720p, which was mentioned elsewhere in the overlay so I omitted it there. 720p "default" vs "graphics pack": I didn't notice any performance difference between the 2, so I just left it on and set to 720p. Other Proton versions: I used Proton-GE and Proton Experimental as a test, but seem to have left it out of the "other things I tried" section, whoops! Sorry about that 😅 CryoUtilities Update: I actually just implemented HugePages support yesterday on my private version! I think I have another few days of testing and adding stuff to do, then I plan to release it to Patreon patrons. After they have a week or 2 with it, I'll update the repo alongside a video explaining the new features, so I'd guess in about 3-4 weeks for public use and within 2 weeks for patrons 🤞 Cemu SMT differences: Interesting, it could be that I won the silicon lottery, or it could be your copy of the game. I've had several reports of some copies of the game (and even some update files) have caused differing behaviour, always worse than what I got. After users got a different copy (no idea where), they all reported much better performance and identical results to mine. Thank you so much for watching the video! My wife and I are some of the biggest Zelda fans out there (even our rings are Zelda-themed!), so this one has been a big priority of mine for a while. Hey there, works great. And I am very happy with this, thank you! I am running it on your 'Prettiest' pre-set, and was gonna ask a few questions: I mainly play on charge but in hand held mode, so would it be worth increasing the resolution since I don't really care much about the battery drain? Also what is the best setting in your opinion with TDP and GPU Clock Control in this situation? Thanks! :D
@cryobyte33
@cryobyte33 Год назад
Increasing the resolution could definitely improve smoothness of visuals a bit, but you'd have to lower the settings to match my "1080p docked" preset to make sure you hit a consistent 30. If that's a good tradeoff for you, then it's an excellent option 🙂 As for the TDP and GPU clock, I'd leave the TDP uncapped since the CPU will need basically all it can get. The GPU clock can be kept a bit lower, I'd guess at 900-1000Mhz, but it might need to be tweaked based on the region you're in. Places like Korok forest with heavy volumetric effects need a bit more GPU, and places with a lot of enemies or NPCs need a bit more CPU, so if you're okay tinkering then you might have to bounce between them as you play. Really great video, loved that the Steam Deck is now perfectly capable of being a Switch, well when playing BotW at least. I have to add that recent versions of Mesa3D (RADV to be precise) added drawcall overhead optimizations thanks to Mike Blumenkrantz's vkoverhead. With these, the CPU throughput was increased dramatically, which results in less power usage for the same usecases. This might buy several more minutes of playtime over 22.2, with further optimizations down the line in 23.1devel. It is safe to say that the Steam Deck will be the better Switch even in terms of playtime, which sounds crazy to me but here we are.

I actually limit it with both, despite the higher input lag. If you're more advanced, you can limit it with the MangoHUD limiter instead. Thanks for watching! You technically can, but it would have worse performance than no swap file and would chew through your SD card very quickly. If you can't spare the full 16GB, any amount larger than 1 is viable, but you won't get the full performance benefit until 16GB. I recommend 4GB if you're really tight on space, that gets about 40% of the performance benefit of 16 for a quarter the storage cost, and offsets the memory used for VRAM 🙂
