Dude, your trick on centering a knife saved my sanity. I have two BM 810s and one was just slightly off center. I did your trick and its perfectly centered. Thank you! Really!
Funny you mentioned that...I polished the finish off all the screws, so now all the hardware is silver. I am wondering if I should get a different color back-spacer now. Thanks for watching!
I have done the same on some of my knives, a little semichrome and a dremel can go a long way...lol. Matching back spacer would look cool. I don't know if the original titanium one would polish up nice if you still have it may be worth a shot.
I almost picked up a 940, been eyeballing it up for a while now. Got the 943 black on black instead .Of course I had to get the black deep carry clip like the one on your custom 940. Near pulled the trigger on a 940 again last night but got a 470-1 fed x tomorrow. Will end up with a 940 at some point, to good of a knife to pass up. Got a nice made in the USA only collection going.
Ryan also makes replacement handles for the Griptilians and Mini Griptilians. The Apostle P reviewed AWT Scales (applied weapons technologies) for the Griptilian. They're less expensive than the Wilkens Grips.
nice video. useful information. personally the main reason i was looking at the 940-1 is the open flow through design and the carbon fiber scales (i don't even usually like carbon that much but i like it a lot on this) apostle p had one of the 940-1's and after polishing the washers the tip was perfectly centered, but it still looked like the blade was not perfectly ground (for me as long as the tip is centered it's okay) still not sure if i would go for one or not but i am still considering it
Hey looks good buddy, interesting you swapped carbon fiber for g10 but everyone likes different things. I prefer s30v and wanted carbon fiber so I spent more money than the 940-1 to get a regular 940 and put custom carbon fiber on it and people thought I was weird too haha
Awesome cool ass knife😃 Just got my 940-1 today. One thing I am particular I wish my knife came with is the deep pocket clip. Do you know where I could get a deep pocket clip for mine & about how much, that would fit my new knife? 🐸 Thanks, that blue handle is sweet & you didn’t really say how strong the damascus blade was compared to the S90V. Ok cool stuff!
T HAK got it! Works a lot better. Knife does not stick out of pocket & could get hooked, scratched. The deep pocket clip they send I noticed was really loose to my pocket so I did some bending of clip. Now it's nice & tight to pocket, do not want to lose knife from falling out from very loose clip. All good now :)
hey, thanks for that info i tried looking up deathofallthings on IG and he's not coming up...:( and thanks for the email bro, love this video still one of the best knives out there!
Ha! I totally understand how that goes. I find that the only way I get away with acquiring new knives now, is to sell other things and re-invest that money in a knife. Otherwise...I'd be done for. Thanks for watching!
I said the same thing, but this knife kept finding ways to tempt me. Finally I went into a store and actually held one. That was what did it for me, and I bought it on the spot. IMO the 940-1 is much more impressive in person than online or through the glass of the case. Pick it up and open/close it a few times and you'll be lucky to get out of the store without buying it.
Oh yeah S90V definitely is better than the Damascus. I moved the S90V blade to the custom blue G10 handle so it could be my EDC user, and the carbon fiber with Damascus is now more of a show-piece/gentlemen's folder.
Standard 940 is almost just as epic as the 940-1. The main appeal to me with the 940-1 is the S90V blade steel. CRAZY awesome steel!!! BUT....I really think anyone would be extremely pleased with the regular 940. I have one and that's what got me so addicted to this model in the first place. I would strongly recommend that if you do go with the standard 940, that you go for the s30v steel instead of the 154cm.
I also feel like the regular model may actually be more durable if it is dropped or just general wear and tear. I want something that will last a long time because I am going to use it a lot. I also know that the aluminum handles looks rugged and good to be when they have some wear on the paint. I don't know how the carbon will look after it starts to wear. I have only heard about the S30V version of the 840. I did not even know about the 154cm version? I was just going to order it on amazon and it say it is the S30V version.
You'll need to take out every screw, disassemble everything besides the axis lock, clean off all oil, move the axis mechanism to the new scales, then put in screws to finish assembling the handle with axis action in it. Put washers on each side of blade, slide into handle while using something small (I usually use a torx bit or screwdriver) to get the washers & blade aligned with the pivot hole. Lastly, slide pivot-pin in as far as you can and use something small to finish aligning the washers and blade so the pivot-pin can pass through. Sometimes rotating the blade while putting mild pressure on the pivot-pin helps this. Tighten pivot-pin until the blade action opens and closes freely and smoothly, but has no blade play when the blade is locked open. Once you verify proper fitment, unscrew pivot again and make sure there is no oil/grease, apply a small drop of blue loctite on the pivot and screw back in like you had it before. Don't open/close blade for at least 24hrs so the loctite has time to harden. I recommend open and closing blade for about a week of carrying, then put in a small amount of lube on the pivot. This gets me a smooth action that wont loosen. Enjoy.
Grand Leavitt! I have a 943 Damascus from him. Had to grind part of the blade to keep to AXIS from failing. Cool blade though. (his email is gdleav....not dgleav...com.) Nice piece!
Mark Meyers Yes. To much material was removed where the blade meets the stop bar and not enough material where the AXIS bar rests; causing it not to move forward enough--allowing the lock to fail with just moderate downward force. Bummer. I kinda fixed after our email conversation seemed to just stop. Major bummer. Waiting for my G10's from Ryan any day now..
Mark Meyers That's lame and sorry to hear it was such a hassle. Sounds like they're not very consistent. I double-checked mine and I don't have any lock-up problems, but see that the area that the Axis lock engages is a little flatter, allowing the bar to slide up a little further and making the overall knife a bit straighter than normal. I'm glad you got it locking up now, and hope you like the G10 handles as much as I do.
Thanks. Mine came from another owner--which luckily came with the original s90v blade. That's what I used as reference to see where it was screwed up. Spoke with him on the phone. Got a real "you're crazy. how dare you?" vibe. Sent some photos. He said "I'll take a look." Never heard back...Maybe he just has really slow internet off the grid there.. (yours looks sweeet!) I still don't trust it....and if I remove too much more metal, there will be tremendous blade play because the excessive material removed where it meets the stop bar...a major swing and a miss on this one. Thanks for the feed back..
Great video. I have tried to contact Ryan M Roberts at the email address you supplied but email does not go thru, invalid address listed as reason.Has he changed his email address? Can anyone help me out with this? I want to order a set of scales. Thanks.
+*night_stalker1975 * I've heard several people say this. It sounds like he may not be making scales anymore. If I find out any new contact info for him, I'll definitely let everyone know.
+Custom Edge Works You can follow Ryan on Instagram , deathofallthings , I bought CF scales from him for my 943, excellent work . He's still making handle scales . ryan_m_roberts@hotmail.com
+Ed Maryellen Kmiec To me, the best part of this knife was the blade steel they used. I'm tired of seeing Carbon-fiber on every knife these days. Also, the majority of the carbon fiber handles on these knives were produced with bad tolerances, causing the blade to be permanently off-center. Another thing is that I like most of my knives/guns/gear to be unique or custom. So when I found a way to do that and maintain the weight and function while getting a handle material never used before on the 940, it was a no-brainer for me. Thank you for watching!
+Custom Edge Works agreed! Not to mention the cf handle is slick, has no grip and just doesn't feel as balanced as the g-10 & aluminum versions. I think the blue handle looks awesome is definitely an improvement!
Oh yeah I got a crooked river after a shit ton of apparently soft reviews ! I am totally un-impressed ! The fit and finish on this knife was astoundingly poor ! If I didn't have a bunch of Chinese knives I would have thought it was a bad Chinese clone ! But I have never got a Chinese $20.00 knife with that bad of fit and finish ! Benchmade crooked river out of box . Lock stick ( tool required to close ) all handle edges so sharp they will cut .pivot so tight it took 2 hands to operate . Lock spring so hard it will need adjustment lock bar and other handle parts so sharp it was actually painful to operate .the side of the high end steel blade is like a file that hasn't been ground down smooth !!! Now the crooked river isn't stupid priced like the 940-1 but I am pretty annoyed because there is no reviewer that said anything about the lack of fit and finish on this knife!! There are some that say benchmade is some time hit and miss on quality control but this was an outstanding lack of quality control !!!
No ! Not the perfect edc ! The price shows no loyalty to the buyer from the company so they can expect none ! $66.50 940-1 clone . 2.6 oz all carbon handle ! Don't like the brand name on it but that's the only thing I don't like about it !
The blade just looks so scrawny like an extra sharp letter opener. Just hard for me to get over the aesthetics. For about the same weight the lightweight Manix looks better to me.
+louderthangod I totally get that. Everyone has different tastes and I know many knives that look better. The function of this knife just seems hard to beet though. I have and love the Manix. But like most Spyderco blades, you lose much of the cutting edge due to their finger-choils. Main reason why I would choose my Griptilian over my Paramilitary 2 any day of the week. Nothing against Spyderco though. I have many and love them all! Thanks for watching!
I really cant understand benchmade blades. Many of them aren't perfectly straight. Even my 19 dollar ganzo knives all have perfect straight blades. Why is this?
