Review of the long-awaited Benchmade 940-1 Osborne design. Pricey, but perfect in almost every way in my opinion. Premium materials, extremely light weight (2.4oz), takes up little space in pocket, and feels good in hand. Perfect blade design (3.5in) and some of the best blade steel (s90v) out there.

I finally snagged one and am awaiting it in the mail. I purchased a basic model 940 for my buddy two years ago and have been jealous of it for years. I saw this one shortly before purchasing it for him and decided one day I'd buy it. Finally did. Great video as it was one of the last videos I watched before committing to that steeper $267 price.

Quick protip: Email Benchmade on their website and say you broke the pocket clip on your 810 Contego. They'll send you a deep carry clip and 3 screws that will fit the 940-1. I did this the day before I ordered my 940-1 and it came in about the same time. Free. Fits perfectly.

Diamond stones are great for any super steel. You can get the diamond stones like dmt or on a system like kme or lansky. The diamond will make a big difference as it sharpens super steels faster than natural or Synthetic stones

good video.the c f and s90v steel is a big step up from standard 940 for sure.as for the thumb stub access you could remedy that with sand paper and a dowel. thanks to your video there will be a cf 940 in my pocket in the near future.thanks for the video.
@CuttingEdgeWorks
@CuttingEdgeWorks 9 лет назад
Glad to hear the video was helpful. Very true about sanding a thumb groove for easy access to the thumb-stud. I just like the original lines too much and might hit the line that accentuates the bolster area. However, I put some custom blue G-10 scales on it, and may try that. Thanks for watching.

nice video i brought one mine is 274 of the first production and am surprised how much i really love it. one point i would make and dont know if its the steel or stone wash or both the blade cleans up great and seems to resit oil and smudges. the knife is deff a step up from the old 940 may be the best EDC production knife. i say this as a lefty as i pass on a lot of knives that are right handed biased.

Thanks for watching, and I'm glad you enjoy the 940 as much as I do! Whether you're lefty or need to use your "off-hand", the Axis lock makes it all possible to open and close the knife. Benchmade doesn't get everything right (no Manufacturer does), but they sure came close with their locking mechanism.

S30V is great. I generally use an Apex Edge Pro to sharpen my knives, and with it I'm able to easily put an absurdly sharp edge on the S90V (or anything for that matter). I also find that I need to sharpen the S30V more frequently if used on things other than paper, than I do the S90V. For most EDC applications, S30V is more than enough though. Thanks for watching and for the feedback.

Great video! The 940 was the first knife I spent a decent amount of money on. Fast forward years later to the 940-1... I had to have it, #478/750! I love the weight reduction and inclusion of an s90v blade. The standoff pins instead of the back-spacer is great for cleaning. I miss the grip of the aluminum, but all things considered, this is far superior IMHO. As an aside, most of my Benchmades require some breaking in, followed by a loctite treatment. This is the only one that has remained solid after hundreds of flicks. Is yours the same?
@Cspartan300
@Cspartan300 10 лет назад
Thanks and I agree with you about the superiority of the new materials and design. With further research I've found that the quality control with the 940-1 is about the same as the other 940's, as many of the blades are off centered initially. Also, I find that my pivot-pin has loosened very slightly after opening it close to 1,000 times. As you've said...BM does usually need a lock-tight treatment. I do a "spa-treatment" on most of my knives, also blade centering, lock-tight, edge re-profiling and many other things are done to perfect the blade. With this knife, there wont be much to do. It's AWESOME! Enjoy yours!

707 is awesome. Check out my review on it. I have a few full-size and mini grips and I love them! They're all customized and I may need to do a review on those next. I think that they feel a little better in hand, but not as good as the 707 or 940 in pocket. That's why I'm so stoked about the 940...it's good in hand AND in pocket. Yeah I hear ya, but that's a good problem to have in my opinion haha. Out of the roughly 100 folding knives I have, I have 2 940's. The other is an aluminum handled one that I did an acid stone-wash on the blade, and am getting the handle cerakoted. Such an awesome knife that's plenty versatile! I'm jealous that you have the red one! I scour ebay and everywhere else looking for one. So that's why I'm making my own. Thanks for the Soonerstate reference, and thanks for watching. Custom Edge Works oh that is good! you were able to find ones with the same screw heads so its nice and flush with the handle? i am ordering a sebenzna soon but i also really want to have something with an axis lock and this was really one of my favorites. How is the blade centering on your copy? that is the only other thing i am concerned about. The Apostle P had 3 840-1's and the blade was not centered on any of them.
@CuttingEdgeWorks
@CuttingEdgeWorks 9 лет назад
Yes. Found screws that fit perfectly. Most of the 940-1's had centering problems due to improper tolerances. It really bothered me and I ended up getting aftermarket custom scales (shown in another one of my videos). Now centering is perfect!
@AndreVautour
@AndreVautour 9 лет назад
Custom Edge Works thanks for the info. I will check that out. Seems like that is replacing a lot of an already expensive knife, though! do you know if there has been any improvement in later runs of the 940-1?
@CuttingEdgeWorks
@CuttingEdgeWorks 9 лет назад
***** Very true. I'm picky and really like good blade centering...but it's such a great EDC option...I'd tale it the way it came out of box and still be happy. Not sure if they fixed the centering in later runs or not though.

S30v may be a great steel but it don't cost $100.00s per unit to use in a knife !!! That's why I ordered the clone ( the real one is a cnc clone to ) probably has d2 steel very good steel ! Might be hollow ground better to ( maybe not still ok ) ! Same size 2.6 oz s solid carbon scales !
@phildo864
@phildo864 7 лет назад
How would you rate Hitachi white steel number 1 when used as a core with a softer stainless steel as a laminate compared to s90v? Could you compare the edge retention, cutting ability, and strength?
@CuttingEdgeWorks
@CuttingEdgeWorks 7 лет назад
I don't have any experience with that steel. I've heard it's very good and comparable to their blue steel in some ways...but all I've heard is that it's uncommon, expensive....but a very consistent steel when it comes to the metallurgy. I still think S90V is a great steel for EDC purposes, but I've found M390 (and all variants) to be my most preferred EDC steel at this point. I have EDC knives that I've used extensively that consist of over 20 different steels, and M390 seems to be the best balanced in performance vs price I've found. Many great steels these days...but I'm very curious about the white steels. The blue steels are very good...but I don't think I'd choose over S90V or S110V.
@phildo864
@phildo864 7 лет назад
What do you like better about the M390 vs the S90V in terms of performance?
@CuttingEdgeWorks
@CuttingEdgeWorks 7 лет назад
Nothing in performance alone. Under normal usage, I find them to both cut equally as good. The S90V has more vanadium and will cut slightly more aggressively.....but again nothing I've noticed in normal use. I think that the M390 is just as tough, sharpens easier, takes a keener edge, has more corrosion resistance and all at a lower cost. Either steel is a total win though!
@phildo864
@phildo864 7 лет назад
I've been convinced from what I've read lately about the heat treat being maybe the most critical part of the formula. Meaning a sub par steel with an awesome heat treat by an expert will perform better than a great steel with a sub par heat treat. What are your thoughts about this?
@CuttingEdgeWorks
@CuttingEdgeWorks 7 лет назад
I have had the same experience. I've often had the same steel perform differently due to one having a better heat treatment. That being said, anytime I'm comparing blade steels, I do so under the pretense that said steels have proper heat-treatments. I first look at the steel compositions, then the maker.

I love the carbon fiber and the 940 design. However, every 940-1 I've looked at have a dull & slightly off centered blade. The screws stick through the other side of the carbon fiber scales and the spine of the blade is cut unevenly at the point of the blade. This might be why the blades seem slightly off centered. Would absolutely love to buy this knife, but fit & finish seems to be lacking for it's price point.

This is the fake version of this knife. The clip is way off . The spacers are not the correct color. This knife actually weighs in at 2.6 ozs its heavier than the true 940-1. If you paid over 40 for that knife then you over paid. The quality is not that of the true version.

It is much easier to simply activate the lock switch with your thumb & forefinger and then lightly flick the blade out with a mild wrist motion. The blade snaps open very easily into locked position. So you don't really need the stud at all.
