The sad thing is that the fan base pretty much agreed that Henry was a great choice for Superman. The people who dislike it object to the film they built around him. Think Pierce Brosnan as Bond, but in the terrible Die Another Day installment.

Henry deserved *WAY* better. He was so up for this role and the studio kept stepping on rakes and smashing themselves in the face. They wanted to shake-and-bake their way to an Avengers movie without taking the time and care to develop each character on their own, make the audience want more of them. It was just frustrating to watch when great talent was RIGHT THERE.

Henry Cavill is the modern Superman, he looks exactly the same as the modern comics. Hey Meg! Over here! 54:25 one of the reasons I like this movie: Sometimes we don't see our own potential, but the people who truly care and love us can see it, Jonathan Kent saw it and was confident about it even though Kal-El didn't.

@AshrafAnam 9 месяцев назад
Not just that. The title "Man of Steel" implies that there is a human among us who is not really human and is as strong as steel...god among men if you will. It's not like seeing him as an alien, rather as a human but the strongest among humans. It was originally titled "Superman: Man of Steel" before the final official title was revealed.

Also calling the film Man of Steel rather than Superman shows very very clearly that the character isn't yet fully formed as Superman. It's an origin story. He's not yet the hero that we all know from pop culture. He is a fledgling hero in the making. A man of steel, but not yet a hero worthy of our adoration. But that should have come next. Sadly it didn't.

16:00 I would also add that this goes back to the old saying nurture over nature. True, Kal is generaly a good kid, but because of the love he was surrounded by he grew into the man that he is today. Its the whole Homelander thing. If he was raised by a loving family he could have turned out just like Kal but since he wasn't and his only feeling of safety and power came from his powers he turned into a monster. You could argue with the injustice story line but that was a whole different kind of trauma and self guilty.

My first time getting into superman was when he died in the comics. That was one hell of a battle over 5 comics. I remember my buddy as a kid had superman 75 (his death) in a glass case I was 9 and jealous as i was a huge comic fan (and still am) next year (around fall 1993) I found the death issue, a first print newstand edition, at a farmers market. The vender was willing to sell it to me for $5.00 although it went for $10.00 but informed he had to leave soon. so I ran all over that place and found grandpa and got my $5.00 and ran back to him to get it. That started my interest in him and it continues today.

I had the pleasure of meeting Zack Snyder and telling him how much this version of Superman means to me. He outlined how he doesn’t necessarily perceive this version of Clark as “dark”, but just real. He has problems and dilemmas that don’t have easy answers. I think it works as a different interpretation of an iconography and story that has been so engrained in culture. I find it funny how Batman has been allowed so much reinterpretation but Superman somehow isn’t afforded the same experimentation.

Dreams lift us up and transform us into something better. And on my soul, I swear that until my dream of a world where dignity, honor and justice are the reality we all share, I'll never stop fighting. Ever. Superman is not meant to be “realistic” he’s a man who can fly and shoot lasers from his eye for christ sake. Realism went out the window a long time ago. He’s supposed to represent the best version of what the world could be and a strong guy who could fix the most overwhelming problems.
@ultimamage3
@ultimamage3 9 месяцев назад
Dan DiDio asked Garth Ennis to write Superman back in 2016 precisely because "the problem with everyone writing Superman is they all revert to being five". Snyder similarly doesn't see Clark from the lens of a five-yr-old in need of an infallible dad that must never be questioned, made to doubt, and should have all the answers for everything everywhere. Clark isn't a dark character and Man of Steel isn't a dark movie, it's just one that respects the character as he exists in the modern world and doesn't view him as a stand-in for something to worship in place of the Old Testament God.

From my experience people who throw words around like "dark", "light", "hope" in relationship to Superman and how he "must" be often times don't have the words to do articulate what they really think. I always get the impression that what they really want is comfort, not hope. Those are very different things. To me, Man of Steel is comforting because I see person who I identify with overcome very difficult, very realistic odds despite his own imperfections. For other people who are more inconsolable, they need to be tricked into believing everything will be ok by concocting a situation where nothing bad could have ever happened. This, I believe is the real issue.

I agree Clark not saving his Dad was a bit silly, but if you think about it logically it’s a stretch the movie mates to emphasize the point that the world WILL change once they know about him. You have to admit, Clark is still a bit immature in that instance in the way he’s arguing with his parents how a normal teenager would, which reinforces the fact that he’s still a bit young and naïve and not ready to go out into the world and show them what he can do just yet. His father knew this, but it still makes it all the more painful that something like that happened. Even in the comics, John’s Kent’s death is incredibly impactful, as he dies of a heart attack, maybe the ONLY thing Clark couldn’t have prevented with all his abilities and powers. It showed that at the end of the day as powerful as he is, in some ways, he’s still not God.

59:40 Honestly Meg, there's a ton of factors that happened, but at the core was the previous heads at DC/Warner Brothers were desperate to start their own Comic Film Universe to compete with Marvel Studios, especially since they were coming off of the Dark Knight Trilogy. They hired Zack Snyder to kick start the DCEU with Man of Steel, and he had an entire RoadMap painted out, collaborative plans with other Directors like Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and James Wan (Aquaman), plans to include the Green Lanterns, etc. However, Man of Steel didn't pull in Box Office numbers like Pre Endgame MCU did, and fans/critics were critical of a Comic film, and a Superman film on top of that, that was more thought provoking, darker and not along the MCU's tried and true methods of simple formula and light humor. It didn't help that last time there was a Live Action Superman was Christopher Reeve, and people kept unfairly comparing Henry's Superman to Reeves, especially considering the modern times and eras of both. So, following MOS, Warner Brothers started to interfere alot more with the projects instead of trusting the Directors, Cast and Crew with it. Suicide Squad 1 and Batman vs Superman were examples of studio interference behind the scenes. And as studios like Fox proved with the Fantastic Four reboot or Kathleen Kennedy with Star Wars (years later) its never a good thing. When Justice League was in mid production, Zack Snyder had to leave production because his family suffered a terrible tragedy, his daughter Autumn unfortunately passed away, having took her own life. When Zack left, WB hired Joss Whedon because of the jobs he did for Marvel for Avengers 1 and Age of Ultron. However, they cut like 90 percent of the material Zack had already shot for JL, and Whedon made everyone's lives on set a living hell, including but not limited to threatening and harassing Gal Gadot, reshoots and forced crude humor, racist behavior to Ray Fisher etc. but Warner Bros still kept Zack Snyder's name on the Whedon cut as a scapegoat. And then their version of Justice League was the ungodly dumpster fire we were all subjected to as fans :( After Discovery had purchased Warner Bros, they knew too much damage had been done to the franchise by the previous Heads and people like Joss Whedon. James Gunn, who directed Suicide Squad 2 and as you know all the Guardians of the Galaxy Films, was hired on to create the new DCU. However, after the mess of Josstice League, and the fact that all the big cast members like Henry, Ben, Gal etc. were all on team Zack, WB decided to get rid of them all. Henry being one of the first to pay the Studio's mistakes. Even though people like the Rock (Black Adam) fought tooth and nail to get Henry back, the damage was done, and James Gunn, as much as we don't want him too, is basically having to wipe the slate clean with his new DCU. Also it didn't help that there was public backlash against actors like Ezra Miller and Amber Heard, for their various reasons. But yea, that's basically it, although certain actors are carrying over into the new DCU, Peacemaker and Blue Beetle are also able to fit into either continuity. The new heads of DC decided that, after the merger, we the fans and Zack especially, were owed the proper cut of Justice League, so after over 4 years of fighting for it, and with the previous heads of DC saying "There's no Snyder Cut", "You'll never see it" and "Joss Whedon's JL is the definitive version" we were given the proper Team Up, at least before everything changes. There's a lot more shit behind the scenes I didn't mention, but yea that's basically the long and short of it.

I would correct in the part about MoS not making the money. It became the most successful Superman movie at the box office and did way more than any of the Marvel movies of Phase One. And it was WB that wanted to double down with the darker themes too. It was until later that they felt the movie was too long that they started to wanting more changes (they also wanted stupid changes on MoS but Nolan helped Snyder to fight back and not to have his cut) and it wasn't until the movie came out and critics happened because of the tone and the weird rhythm that they panicked and wanted many changes with Suicide Squad, WW and JL.
@passionsquietrage
@passionsquietrage 4 месяца назад
The theatrical version of JL isn't that bad, but it could have been a little better. WB should have just Snyder do his thing and they would have made money. One of many reasons the studio should never be involved in anything past financing and distributing the movie.

I disagree honestly, it's a good movie but this Superman doesn't have that inner positivity that every other Superman has. It's like if Batman and Superman were both dark and brooding or alternatively if both were eternally cheerful. There's no contrast, the bit that makes it interesting in my mind. Henry Cavill is the perfect person to play Superman but he never got the right script.

@FireLordIroh
@FireLordIroh 9 месяцев назад
@@brown_recluse_human3458 I don't think the hostility is warranted but I agree that not every adaptation / interpretation needs to be a carbon copy. Bruce Wayne is my favorite character in all of literature and yet I love many different takes on him. Whether it's B:TAS, Year One, The Batman, TDK trilogy, Batman (1966), Batman: The Brave and the Bold, etc. These characters are very maliable but I think it's foolish to deny that the characters can be changed too much. The Injustice Superman is basically a different character but that works in context because evil Superman is the "What if...?" concept of the whole story. Man of Steel is great but it's not claiming this isn't Superman. It's not just an elseworld story where big core thematic changes can just be swept under the rug. If Smallville Clark, S:TAS Clark or Reeve Clark saw MOS Clark about to kill Zod they would have tried to stop him or would've told him to turn himself in if they failed. Might sound silly but that's what would happen. After a certain point of change it's no longer the character we know. Characters aren't their abilities. They are their actions and beliefs. Clark in S:TAS isn't exactly the same in Smallville but I love and accept both. I'm not just being rigid for drawing a line in the sand. Edit: I don't hate Man of Steel. I think it's great but to me Jonathan Kent says things that are way out of character and Clark killing is ooc. Henry even said that the snap was his reason why he'll never kill again. Meaning the man had to kill to learn killing is bad. No. The way he was raised is what made him such a Super Man.

Thumb Up #738! 👍 You're welcome, and thanks! ☺️ Notes: I was going to watch "Liz XP" play "Skyrim" until the notification for this video popped up! Now unless I fall asleep again, I may view her video now, though I may also see "Man of Steel" via "Netflix" on this smartphone. If so, that will be a first for me. My best friend got to meet Helen Slater in person at a "Trek Expo" and I've been miffed ever since then, that I missed out on the opportunity! 😢 The Multiverse has never confused me, so I was annoyed that the people who were so confused, got their way when "The Crisis on Infinite Earths" happened! I also wrote letters in protest of Supergirl's death and I was so happy when it was eventually undone by revealing it was a shape-shifting entity! Or something like that. 🤔 The live-action "Krypton" gives us the first live-action versions of "Adam Strange" and "Lobo"! But it is the first "DC" series of those that I've seen to disappoint me! 😞 The more recent series "Naomi" became the second one but only because it didn't last long enough for her to meet her idol, Superman! Oh! And the "HBO" series version of "The Watchmen" has a great story to tell, but not enough budget for a CGI "Doctor Manhattan" and so instead we get two different actors, one White and one Black, in very bad blue body paint jobs! 🎨 Not impressive in a good way at all! They looked like followers of "Blue Man Group" if said followers were Nudists! Meanwhile the good-looking gals kept their clothes on! 😁 That's my long way of saying that I enjoyed most of the "DC" movies and series that I've seen, be they live-action or not, in color or not. In the 1966 movie "Modesty Blaise", she converts some items from her purse into a small bow and arrow set! For safety's sake her arrow of course isn't really going to hit her intended target and to prove it, we see it go over the bridge as the stuntman pulls an arrow up and holds it to his chest, before falling onto the safety pad below! That's too funny and she's too sexy-cute, for me to dislike her one movie! Her comics were published in the UK and over here by "DC"! 😎 So I like each version of the "DCEU" movies that I've seen! 😊

Im glad you liked this movie. Personally, I think this is a fairly good Superman movie, though I wouldn't call it my favourite Superman movie, as I do have a few critiques here and there regarding the depiction of Clark and Superman's scurried morals, as well as characters like Jonathan Kent and his bizarre death in this movie but those are just my criticisms despite it truly being a well-made movie, and though Zack Snyder at the time didn't really understand Superman and had more jaded, cynical opinion on the character back in 2013, I cannot deny that his style of direction was really epic and grand which I admire. Henry Cavill was a perfect cast to play Clark and Superman. He really understands the character, and it is ultimately a huge shame that we won't be seeing him Superman again and both he and the character deserved better treatment than what they received from the ignorance of WB executives. Zod isn't my favourite Superman villain, not even in my top 15. Still, Micheal Shannon's performance as this take on Zod was really great as you felt how misguided he was and how you understood his reasoning. However, his impatience was his hubris, and even after the DCEU failed he still was probably the best villain in this short-lived cinematic universe (which isn't saying much) at least before they reboot with James Gunn's upcoming DCU. BTW I CANNOT WAIT to see what James Gunn delivers with his upcoming take on Superman in Superman: Legacy (2025) as everything Ive heard, plus the fantastic castings and production team so far it seems like he might give us the best Superman movie to date

56:31 Mark! Another irony with Ben Affleck! Ahem. "Daredevil" from "Marvel" has been called "The Red Batman"! Ben is the second live-action version of "Daredevil" after the version seen in the "CBS" series "The Incredible Hulk". (Unless there is one in the "Got Milk?" PSA, or something like one, that has an animated cartoon version of "Underdog" interacting with live-action members of "The Avengers". It was probably made before the live-action "Underdog" movie.) So Ben has played, in order, "Daredevil" for "Marvel", and "Superman" but not for "DC" and "Batman" for "DC"! 😅

33:41 Mark! "Flying animation"! That's a funny and ironic observation. If you didn't know what "CGI" is, you'd probably be wondering how it was done as they did with Chroistopher and George. It wasn't just children who needed to learn how the special effects were done! As a child, I leaped a lot while pretending to be either "The Six Million Dollar Man" ("ABC") or "The Incredible Hulk" ("CBS") and consequently I lost count of how many times each my ankles have been twisted or sprang, but never fractured or broken! I never tried leaping out of a window as "Superman" though! But anyway, the point is that cartoon animation is usually meant to be blantally obvious, right?! But they "subtly" used for transforming Bela Lugosi's "Dracula" back and forth between his human form and bat form! In either Val Kilmer's or George Clooney's "Batman" movie, there's a bit used in the shadows. But those examples are afterthoughts. I began with me thinking about actor Kirk Alyn as the first live-action "Superman"! For his flying sequences, they actually used cartoon animation! For some, that merely added to the wonder even as others laughed! "How did he become a cartoon?! In the comics, he doesn't!" 😅

My two big criticisms of this are the tone and the way Pa Kent dies. The great thing about the way Pa Kent usually dies is that it's by a heart attack or something to that effect. It's heartbreaking because despite how powerful Clark is, he can't stop something as simple as that. In this it makes it way less effective that he dies from an easily avoidable situation. And the tone is pretty self explanatory. We are in dire need for a modern telling of Superman that has a tone similar to the comics we love him for as well as the original Christopher Reeve movie. Superman isn't some stoic statue of a man. He's a kid who grew up in Kansas to two of the nicest humans on earth. He should be smiling way more. He should be getting a cat out of a tree for a child. He acts way too stoic in this. This is not a criticism of Henry WHATSOEVER. It's a similar thing to what happened with Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man movies. Both great actors that are perfect for their roles but unfortunately ended up with some pretty shit scripts.

for me what I like about this version of Jonathan Kent's death is that it turns it from a lesson in his limits to a lesson in decision making and dealing with the consequences. I view it as clark learning the ability to make decisions and take the consequences with grace along with the ability to learn from these decisions and consequences is just a different lens of what being a good person is. Ultimately, i think killing off Jonathan Kent isnt always necessary but I appreciate that Snyder had a point for why he made this change for Jonathan's death and that there was an equally compelling point to what was done in the Reeve films.

We would have gotten that Superman had Snyder been allowed to continue his universe, but the higher up idiots at WB cared more about making money fast than making money in the end. As for the way Johnathan Kent died, he sacrificed himself to protect both his wife and son. He knew Martha would be safe with Clark and that Clark's powers were still developing and might have gone out of control.

Just to sum up the fan base, we love Henry as Superman but hate the writing and direction the characters were taken in. Too many liberties and concessions of the character were made, and does not represent the Superman we all know and love. This is kinda the problem with all super hero movies is they care less about the characters and stories that make these characters great and just tend to do what they want with a popular character. The Snyderverse had potential, and there were some really good things going for almost each film. Just too much working against the characters.

really? it has some emotional notes. Jor-El's perspective and mission for Kal are sound and in the spirit of everything you've seen thusfar, but I'm surprised after seeing the best Superman can offer in All-Star and the animated series....that you enjoyed this packaging. Pa and Ma Kent are ok. But Kal has zero personality. He emotes in the moment, but no true personality like the ones you've been watching ever rears its head. Occasional smirks at little setup jokes. There's not much of that cleverness you see in the better incarnations either. It's mostly about him learning how to best harness his Kryptonian skills and then push them to their limits through determination and might. That's surface level Superman and it's cool but, it's not why we tune into him. The most thoughtful moments or glimpses into the psyche of Zod, his followers and the rest come in the beginning. They are seldom explored again. And as many people say, it's Superman shot and written like Batman. Its just hard and serious, but still without the thought and intrigue of Batman or a proper Superman. The emotions are intense, acted well enough, but simple. Intense anger, tough talk, basic calm delivery otherwise, and of course intense rage and sorrow at the end. Some notes of hope and wistful resolve, but nothing REALLY interesting said or acted.
