I'm so glad this was just a backstory, it would've really ticked me off if they had executed the episode like; "We're home, kids!"
@shadowwriter4538

Well it's implied that they are dead so they won't go that route. Even if they aren't dead for any reason, they wouldn't just do that.

SciRei Fireshock agreed, when I first heard the news, I was ticked. I thought it was going to be like "Hi, I'm your mom and he's your dad, how has your life been since we just up and left you to fend for yourselves with your grandma?" I am sooooooo glad they didn't do that. So glad....

Best episode of the entire show. No contest. This episode was absolute perfection from start to finish. Instead of seeing the limitations of runtime and rating as an impediment, the writers were creative with it and crafted the best story they possibly could. They pushed the rating to the breaking point by strongly implying their deaths without ever actually saying it. They crafted a beautiful love story that made me bawl my eyes out. I adore this episode. The show staff have really outdone themselves. Here's to hoping S7 keeps being this amazing.

Has anyone else notice that during the song, while its Pear Butter singing about how much she loves Bright Mac all the visuals show off how much Bright loves Pear Butter. From sending her the picture, asking if they should dich there parents to go out, offering a dance, using his hat to shield her from the rain and finally picking the weeds so she won't have to. It took me a couple of takes to notice it but it really shows the balance of there love for one another. What a great attention to detail

This episode was great and beautiful, and I have not as many complaints. But the one complaint I hear from everyone is that thw writers didn't explain how they passed on. And whenever I hear that I just have to ask this. What would be the point of it? Another sad moment to cry about? For MLP to take a weird turn explaining death? I mean, it would be interesting to see, but it would be kinda....out of nowhere. What do you think, Doc?

You know-- I kept wondering about "how they died" -- but after this one, showing how they *lived* - well, I don't really care about how they died anymore. But... what stories Granny has told AJ about bats? Maybe there was Apple Blight AND bats -- and Pear Butter and Bright Mac died of starvation?

it bothers me that so many people from the fandom feel the need to hold every episode to the same standard of quality as the episode before. There are going to be hits and there are going to be misses. Not all are going to be home runs, especially with different opinions and tastes from so many people. Can't we just enjoy the show as a whole, rather than seeking to hold or judge every episode with the same high-quality bar that other episodes reached?
@robertreiss4658

I agree, if it weren't for some of the (not worse) more laidback episodes the truly great ones wouldn't stand out as much as they do. They can't all be "Perfect Pear" or "Royal Problem". Some are just, lets sit down and watch a nice cartoon.

DiegoAlanTorres69 again, we don't need to compare. thats an insult and unfair to the writers of mlp, holding them by the standards of writers in another completely different series. MLP and its writers have their own standards and flavor. Don't compare.

I want a future episode that has two combined storylines: 1: Scootaloo's parents return from their demanding jobs, and now have time for their daughter. 2: Dr. Whooves and Discord bring Pear Butter and Bright Mac forward in time, permanently, allowing them to live out their lives after their prior deaths/disappearance. It could be a FANTASTIC juxtaposition of parents who chose to not be around, and who don't know their daughter, with parents who COULDN'T be around barely knowing their children anymore. Or even just more episodes covering the motherly side of Applejack towards Apple Bloom, and separate episodes for Scootaloo reconnecting with her parents.

Honestly, the writing and feels in this episode was just on. I do agree that the short run span of the episode left me and probably others wanting more, but at the same time this was one of the most tightly written episodes ever in the history of mlp. Also I don't necessarily like Romeo and Juliet itself, but I do like seeing all of the iterations of it such as West Side Story and now mlp. Well done writing staff, well done

I loved every bit of this episode, I just don't know what to say, I think it's my favorite episode in the series, their parents were portrayed so well in it. AJ is my favorite pony so I've been waiting for an episode like this for so long, it pretty much managed to bring a tear to my eye, not out of sadness though, just how lovingly wholesome it was, I couldn't help but feel fuzzy and warm the entire time. However.... This episode also established something else as well. Dinky Hooves is a freaking time traveler!

10/10. Perfect. Pure gold. That's my honest-to-god rating for this episode. It has a tremendous amount of rewatch potential for me because it's just so _incredibly_ cute, adorable, and heart-meltingly warm. Just like Mom's fresh apple pie, if you'll forgive the pun. ^_^ I also enjoyed Burnt Oak and Big Mac having that little moment where Mac asks him if they can come back to hear more stories, and the old woodcutter's eyes twinkle with a little tear, like he genuinely would appreciate it. That was a beautiful side chat, and I'm so glad they put it in. Not to mention that it leaves an opening the size of the Grand Canyon for pony fanfiction writers to tell all kinds of stories Burnt Oak probably has to tell, which is even better when you realize his voice is uncannily like McCree from _Overwatch._

I love this episode! It is more then likely my second favorite episode of the series, my favorite being Amending Fences. (Amending Fences just hit me on a personal level). This kind of story isn't new, it basically is Romeo and Juliet. Star crossed lovers whose family can't stand each other. But it's just a plot point that may be so cliché it just works on so many levels. And for MLP FIM to blow this kind of plot out of the water for me and make it amazing; well that is just great to see. It made me cry so much the first time I had watched it, and even watching it now still gets me teary eyed/and even crying. The Apple parents are definitely dead, the hints before this episode with the series, the hints in this episode, plus the line they left something to remember them by, that just sells it to me. Plus everyone acted in a way that you would if someone you cared for was dead, yeah there's no denying it. Talking about old times, and the like. I can't see anyone having any doubt about them being gone after this episode. (Unless some people are just in denial). Such an amazing episode, love it so much!
@defender2222
@defender2222 7 лет назад
As per the nitpick... there is still so much we can be told. For example, as far as we know Burnt Oak doesn't have children and Mrs. Cake doesn't have her babies until well after the Apple Parents are gone. So we could get a story about Buttercup and Bright Mac dealing with newborn Big Mac. Perhaps both are used to how a Pear foal and an Apple foal behave (what to watch out for) only to discover Mac exhibits both! I could see it set up like this: Cadence and Shining Armor have come for a visit with Flurry but she is upset about... something. They don't know what and are trying everything, with Twilight researching every book she can find. Applejack suggests going to Granny, as she's an old hoof at raising foals and when they get there Granny begins telling a story about Bright Mac and Buttercup dealing with baby Mac and how he isn't like babies they've both encountered (for example, maybe Apple babies exhibit strong bucking early on and Buttercup finds herself flung out of the house during every diaper change. And Pear babies like to gum on wood while teething and Big Mac becomes a little beaver who destroys all the tools Bright Mac has). Or they could do a story about Bright Mac and Buttercup's first fight, with Grand Pear and Granny telling the story and both sides realizing how it got started and the moral being that yes, sometimes people who love each other fight but they still love each other all the same. They could do a story were Buttercup goes to her first Apple Family reunion and has to prove herself. We'd get Bright Mac being super supportive, could have Little Mac and baby AJ, and see more of the Apple family. What I want now though, after this episode, is a Twilight Velvet/Night Light story. Think of how odd it is that Twilight, the pony people could say is the 'star' of the show and whose parents appeared first... also has the parents that are the least developed. I suppose Rarity's parents aren't developed but we seem to know MUCH more about them than Twilights (show-wise, not counting comics). I want an episode like this where we get to know them, maybe with it relating to a problem Twilight is having.

The awesome thing about Bright Mac and Pear Butter's wedding is that, in terms of overall impact to Equestria, Cadance and Shining Armor's royal wedding was a mere birthday party in comparison. The latter pair saved a forgotten (a still rather underutilized empire) and gave birth to an alicorn; Bright Mac and 'Buttercup' raised a daughter who'd become the element of honesty, spread friendship across Equestria and beyond, save their farm from the Flim Flam Bros. once and Equestria multiple times over; another daughter who'd inspire a bond with two more fillies and together help shape the destinies of many other ponies who'll make an impact as well; and finally, a son who may eventually help a community through his relationship with Sugar Belle. All three may even become the catalyst that helps both the Apple and Pear families settle their differences as a whole, beginning with their grandparents. Truly, the Apple parents have indirectly left a far greater legacy to Equestria's history than the royal couple through the accomplishments of the children they raised.

I have a bit of a fanfic in mind that goes with this, though as much as I want to create it, I'm busy with some other fics at the moment. (More Specifically, Flutter-Topia) It's more or less a head canon I have, but it's pretty simple as this: The Mane 6's parents were actually a group of friends. Twilight Velvet & Nightlight, Hondo Flanks & Cookie Crumble, Mr & Mrs. Shy (Don't know their names), Bo-Hot Hoof & Windy Whistles, Igneous Rock & Cloudy Quartz, and Bright Mac & Pear Butter, all of them were once a group of friends that lived in Ponyville and went on various adventures, with relations that mirror their own daughters'. It can be one of two ways, or both (If you're brave enough): -A Slice of Life story that goes around each of them, building up their relationships with one another with the occasional danger thrown in (Kinda like the show, but without 1000 year old deities coming back for revenge) -A grand adventure where the Mane 6, their siblings, and close friends disappear, making the old group of friends return for the first time in many years, each looking for their lost children.

First of all, Happy Anniversary Dr. Wolf. I was already shedding tears of joy when that song in the middle was being sung. But when the hugging trees were revealed at the end, the dams of my eyes broke and I just bawl like a baby, which I always do when I hear Disney's most tear-jerking songs like "Baby Mine" from "Dumbo". When he goes to see his imprisoned mother and she manages to rock him for a while, I start to tear up. and when it's finally time for the two elephants to part for now, leading them to wave goodbye with their trunks, that's when I had to pause the film and allow myself to bawl like a baby for a few minutes. Sounds pathetic I know, but it's true. Both the trees at the end of this episode and Baby Mine from Dumbo made me cry in the most wonderful way! Heck, I'm not afraid to admit that I'm crying right now as I type all this out! This is the kind of love story that Walt Disney himself would be proud of. About William Shatner as Grand Pear, I agree that I never suspected it was him doing the voice. Mostly because he wasn't pausing at every other word in his dialog like I heard him do in Star Trek. Here. Is an. Example. of-how-annoying-that-can-be. But here: it sounds perfectly natural that I didn't realize it was him until I saw the credits.

Ponies sure spiked back into popularity after this :D My only grip aside from wishing they just say they died, is being a bit distracted from Bright Mac looking 'too' much like Big Mac as a re-color with apple blooms color. Not a deal breaker since Buttercup isn't a full re-color of applejack, but there were times when I was only thinking, he's just a Big Mac and apple bloom re-color and not someone new

That's the idea. He's SUPPOSED to look like Big Mac, but with Apple Bloom's colors. You ever hear the phrase "Oh, you look just like your mother/father"? That's because when a mom and dad have a child, some parts of themselves, or other family members, are shared with their child, both externally, and internally. For example, a young boy will have his dad's hair color, but his mother's eyes, a girl will look like their mother, except for her personality, which is more like her dad's, the list goes on and on. Pear Butter is orange, like Applejack, though her fur color's a much lighter shade than her mane and tail, Big Mac shares his father's body type, and Apple Bloom, obviously, shares his colors. In the Harry Potter series, the main character, Harry, is told by a lot of people that he looks just like his father, except his has his mother's eyes. That's how you know someone is related to other people.

I have been waiting for this episode for a long time. I always wondered who were the apple kids mom and dad. After watching this episode ....I cried. Seeing how there love bloomed and how they were wanting to do anything to be together, it just warm my heart. This episode replaces Pinkie Pride for me. The writers made this story even better then some fan fictions or theories I have read or seen. Season 7 is doing something right, and I hope for more episode with this much heart.

This Season really is a big one. So many memorable Episodes as in no Season before... or is this only for me so? I mean, we had the Highlight Episode with the two Sisters which now understand each other better because of Starlights Cutiemark Switch Spell, we now understand Discord a little bit better, we now know why Rainbow Dash is like she is... because her Parents are such big Fans of her xD and we had this wonderful Episode with Twilight and Flurry Heart, only to mention a few of them. But this one was very Special and I can only agree to Dr. Wolfs Review here. But one thing I miss to this Episode. One little Secret: Where are they now? Where are the Apple Parents? Why theire Kids never write them letters or so? Are they really dead or do they live in another Country, far away from the Family grudge? Is the Land of the Pears still there or have the Apples buyed it from them? I hope we will see the answers of some of this Questions in the Future. Ont thing that I thought as I seen this Episode was, that Macs Hat was the same as Apple Jacks. I thought first, that he maybe had given her his Hat in the Past as she grown up, but then I remembered this one Episode in a older Season, were she and Rarity was in Manehattan for this Live Show and that Rarity buyed her a new one and thrown the old in the Garbage. If this really was the Hat of her Father, I don't think she would let that happens. ^^ Hmm, the next two Episodes are named: Fame and Missfortune and Tripple Threat. Sounds like another Episode with Rarity and the other one with the Cutiemark Crussaders... but the First could also have something to do with Raras new Career... And the last one... maybe another Nightmare Night Episode? Well, we will see. ^^ Have a nice Day. :-)

I thought that it was pretty obvious that they were dead. As someone who has lost family members they acted in a manner very similar to those that have lost people. The way they talked about them, always in the past verb, the line they left something to remember them by really sold it to me that they were dead. But because of the rating they can't outright say it, but the subtext was definitely there.

First of all, happy anniversary Mr. & Mrs. Wolf, hope you had a great anniversary and many, many more to come! As for the episode, I was aware that William Shatner would be voicing a character this season, but I didn't realize his appearance was in this episode until a friend of mine who saw the credits told me so.

The context is really what gives this episode its power. Just knowing theyre dead without saying it really makes even the happy moments.. bittersweet. 6 years of waiting, the acknowledgement of their death but never outright saying it, the way the characters act. Masterfully done.

I love how they are making episode 13 of a season sort of like a mid-season mini finale, first with the apple parents then, all though I haven't seen the leaked episodes out of pure respect, instead reading this on the wiki by accident, chrysalis apparently comes back in season 8 before the big gap, though it still makes me upset someone spoiled season 8.

This story is the first of MLP to actually make me cry because of the beauty of the story. I mean honestly I always knew that everyone in the community asked "what happened to the parents" but never the "how did the meet" question. And I really do hope that we see more of grand pear and grannt smith moments that involve them trying to get along.

I'm very happy with the outcome. A lot of thought went into this and it even called back on some of the characters we needed to know more about. Like Mrs. Cake and Mayor Mare. Getting a little back story on those two added some fun details to the overall story and relationship of the MLP Characters. Great attention to details by added the Mare in the Moon as these events did take place before season one. And giving Mayor Mare her pink hair that we were teased about in a previous CMC episode "Bridle Gossip" The only detail that was just thrown in for Story convenience was the Apple/Pear heart tree. With extensive knowledge of their property, hard to imagine this detail was slipped past any member of the Apple family. More so was that none of the kids asked questions about the ApplePear heart tree having Pear's never got spun before. That is the only glaring detail I can separate from this. I can let that slide though due to how wonderfully the story was told.

This episode was almost perfect. Applejack has always been my favorite character and she BECAME my favorite after watching your first analysis on her. The "Applejacks biggest tradgity is her greatest strength" one. I love the fact that in this episode they never specifically say that they are dead, but its VERY heavily implied. It goes a lot with show dont tell and works really well. Plus it makes sence not to mention it out loud. I mean If you were three kids talking to people who ALREADY KNEW their parents and what happened to them you probably would not be like, "oh by the way it sucks that they both died." Some things are better left unspoken.

I'v been waiting to see your take on this episode for a while now, I really enjoy watching your reviews and take on the episodes, and I find myself sharing the same opinion as you going in, or I come out with more understanding of the episode! Your opinion helps guild mine, I love your work in this community, and the way you talked to your fans, I remember a while ago I posted a comment and you replied I was so shocked that you did so, it gave me joy that you're willing to talk to your fans like that, and even saying at the end of each review that you want to hear our opinion is pretty powerful for me. I really enjoyed this episode and like you, I don't have the heart to say anything bad about it! It was a very special episode, (at least for me) and I hope they sprinkle in a few more story's of them later in the show, like small things they did as a couple, or how they reacted when having two little foals running around the house! Little things like that can be very endearing if done right :)

There's a certain kind of fruit with many names, one of which being apple-pear. While I was kind of disappointed to not see it on the final trees (or at least get mentioned), I can kinda understand it since in appearance it's just a slightly larger and rounder orange-yellow apple.

When I heard William Shatner was going to be in Season 7, I expected him to be Dashie's father, since he has stated publicly that RD is his favorite pony, but he completely owned Gran Pear here. Also, I don't need to know *how* Buttercup and Bright Mac died. I'm perfectly happy with that being undisclosed and entirely up to fanfic writers. I'm pretty sure Hasbro will never let DHX tell that story in any case.

Also in a more serious note... Is it wrong if I think Aunt Orange is actually Bright Mac's sister? Since if I had to guess, she married into the Orange Family and has a more businessy mindset, thus why she moved to MAnehatten. (I say that they are an older sibling since there's nothing that's saying they're not related in that way. Plus she's not that much older than most adult Ponies alreay introduced, so she's not around Granny SMith's age)

What's up with this season?!!! First we get Celestia being an actual character, a Discord centered episode what're he's not being manipulative jerk for his own amusement as well as explaining why chaos is so important to him, Photo Finish returns, Fluttershy stands up for herself without having to go through some recycled lesson that's already been done to death, Daybreaker! And now this episode! It almost feels like they're trying to tie up as many loose ends as they possibly can, makes me wonder if they're planing to take the show in a different direction soon.

I almost cried when I watched this episode. I was smiling by how it was played out, but also sad to see how outcome went. The song was perfect. Bright Mac and Buttercup were amazing characters. Grand Pear was mixed at first, but the ending redeemed him for me and I felt genuinely sorry for him (that and I was completely unaware that William Shatner voiced him. That was a huge surprise). The other characters were an interesting choice and it was awesome to see more backstory for them. The story was well written and I enjoyed every minute of it. I can't say any more praise for this episode. This episode had a mature feel to it and gave us what we wanted. My only gripe is that I want to know how the apple parents died, but then again, this episode made me not want to know the 'how' but just acknowledge that it happened. This episode made me have mixed thoughts, but I don't care. I'm glad we got something. and that something paid off. I give this episode a well deserved A+. I could watch it over and over.

My only complaint too is not seeing more, mainly more about the families. There was one stallion in the Apple side during the feud scene with red mane and green eyes (who was brown with blue scarf) that some of the Apple kids have. I wonder if that could be Granny Smith's husband? And I wanted to see if Granny Smith has more kids, I think one of the Oranges might be one and Braeburns mother or father. Maybe they will do more flashbacks for us to see but I think there was room to have the feud scene to be a bit longer with more character saying something since I can't see more flashback episodes soon at least.

This episode, honest to Celestia, blew my mind. It delivered the development for the Apple siblings everyone's been demanding and was just a surprise. I'm still coming to terms with everything that happened in the episode, because it is so unexpected and so beautiful that I almost have no words for it. The episode delved into some of the best development I've ever seen in the series.

Goldie said that Pear Butter's cutie mark _was_ a jar of preserves. That pretty clearly confirms her death, at least. As do the way Burnt Oak, Cup Cake, and Mayor Mare talk about Bright Mac and Pear Butter. It's the way you talk about the dearly departed you most want to keep in your memory. And it's heart-wrenching to think this way. I haven't cried this much since 'Crusaders of the Lost Mark.'

As I watched "The perfect pair" for the first time I couldn't help but feel a very strong connection to it and in a sense the themes of the movie "secondhand lions" it was so heartwarming and a underlining sense of tragedy because you knew what would eventually happen even if they didn't need to say it, even the unspoken words when they confronted grandpair, but the main thing I felt and is the most important thing about the love story was it was never about how they died but how they LIVED.

Hi! Never been one for romance, much is so over the top...but this, omg, this episode made me, well, love love stories! They deserve more screen time, and I hope the writers and animatiors see fit to have cameos of them in photos, and more stories in the future. This episode made me cry. This is the only MLP episode that ever made me cry. In all honesty and fairness, I've almost never had something in a cartoon show made me cry. I can only think of a few moments (in cartoon shows, I forgot how many times I cried during a Pixar, Disney or Dreamworks movie) that made me cry and still make me cry even after seeing them all the way back when I was a kid. Antauri's death in Super robot monkey team, Kanan's death in Star wars Rebels, Ahsoka leaving in Clone wars, Grunkle Stan's 'death' in Gravity falls and god knows how many Pearl/Rose Quartz related moments in Steven universe are the handful of times I felt GENUINE tears role done my eyes.

I gotta admit that The Perfect Pear has hit me home not only in the feels, but in a relative way when it comes to loosing family members that you love deeply. I know from 2016 taking a lot of family members from me and even 2017 was too from time to time. but this episode really hit home and showing that they will always be there for us in some way. This has got to be my favorite episode of Season 7 so far. And yes - that song _was_ unforgettable. It might've been nice if we'd seen more of how Pear Butter coped with her disownment in the days, weeks, months, and years that followed, and I wish the writers would try to make Applejack a bit less confrontational; but I digress. Overall, a mind-blowing watch.
