I turned 83 on June 17, 2024. Have played for 62 years. Been working hard to improve my swing following several of the YT instructors who seem to make sense, Dr Kwon, Craig Hanson, Eric Cogorno, AMG, Giles Gill. But I am beginning some major rethinking after recently coming across your videos. In particular the grip. I have worked hard the past three years to have my left wrist bowed slightly, not extreme like Dustin Johnson, in order to shallow the downswing and square the face. But about three or four months ago I got DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis, the inflammation of the three tendons that control the thumb. It does not hurt when I swing, but can hurt a lot with other normal daily movements. There seems to be no cure. I always thought a cupped left wrist led to bad contact. But after watching your emphasis on the normal anatomical cocking of the wrist at the “snuffbox”, which is where the thumb tendons pass, I begin working on changing my swing to incorporate a natural cup, a slightly strong grip instead of totally neutral, and a slightly closed face at address. Am hoping this may lessen strain on the three thumb tendons though it remains to be seen. That plus other key elements you show relating to turn, centering, legs, weight shift and bottom of the arc ( grass cutting). Finding the bottom, or radius, is something Bryson DeChambeau also focuses on intensely in a recent YT video “Warming Up With Bryson). Still have a lot to learn, but using a PGA Superstore launch monitor a couple of days ago I got increases in ball speed and carry with driver and 7 iron that I have been desperate to gain back. So I want to thank you ever so much for what looks to be a most valuable and welcome change.

Hi Shawn, This is another fantastic video! There are a lot of RU-vid videos for golf on the internet that teach technique instead of task. This is so much easier to understand. I have added a least 25 to 35 yards to my driver so far this year in cool condition. Thanks for saving my game Shawn!!!

Shawn, I just got off my home simulator (Skytrak into a Net Return), and I’m so excited to comment. I watched this video this evening, and realized in an effort to build control I’ve been manipulating my wrists for the last couple months, which has made them firm in my swing. I warm up with my 8 iron, as I use one length forged irons built to 8 iron length…I’m 5’8” and 158 lbs. I have 5 fused discs in my low back, but at 53 years young, I work hard to be in good shape. Because of the back injury, I just can’t swing as aggressive as I did when I was young, and played to a 5 handicap. I need to swing more with my legs now, keeping my torso from over twisting. The one length clubs are amazing for me, because I’ve built the set to be kind of perfect for a single body position that protects me from injury (5 iron through lob wedge and 3 and 4 hybrid all at 8 iron length). The only clubs in my bag that are different length are my driver and putter. Watching you show a slow and stop version of going into your back swing having good support and balance, and then letting a soft set of wrists set when the right arm bends was an epiphany. I was actually bending my wrists too early, never getting a solid balanced back swing. My 8 iron has been averaging 147 yards, with a 78 mph swing speed, hitting a push draw starting right of target and ending consistently 10 feet left…I would say a fairly strong draw, with a shot apex at 77’. Doing your drills for about 20 minutes, and working on a nice balanced back swing and letting the club naturally hinge with my wrists as my right arm bends, and then keeping my wrists soft throughout the swing, I picked up 7 MPH 😮! And I didn’t feel at all like there was more effort, it was the opposite, it felt smooth and fast. I hit 10 shots at 83 and 84 MPH, that flew 81’ apex, and finished at 159 to 162 yards. The shots were now a soft push draw, starting right of target and landing on or within 5 foot of my line. That’s CRAZY from one single change and drills. I moved through my longer irons, and the average difference in length was 15 yards with each club. As a final shot, I hit my 3 hybrid with an 87 MPH (It has a hair more weight) swing 219 yards! Hitting about 60 shots tonight this way, only 1 swing where I hit it just a little fat, the ball flight ended up 25 foot left of target, everything else had more shot height, better spin and stayed within 15 foot of my target line. I’m in shock…I have a goal of getting to a 7 handicap this summer (live in Michigan so have some time to continue to work until spring), and with this new mindset and swing, I FINALLY feel like I can get there. Thank you for all you do Shawn. You’re ability to make things simple and easy to grasp is like nobody else out there. With a little more work, I’m going to need to replace my shafts because of the extra speed 😊🎉. Maybe I’ll come up to you for a fitting!

Thank you so much for your sound teaching! You’re my golf instructor. I appreciate how you teach. I really appreciate how you keep the teaching relatively simple for dummies like me lol. I don’t want to get confused with complicated instructions from other teachers so I rarely watch other teachers. I have been following you for over a year now and learning a lot. I’m about a 17 handicap and 61 years old. During golf season here in Canada my schedule allows me to golf 3 to 4 times a week. A few years ago I started working at a golf course because I love the game and I get free golf. I know that when I’m successfully incorporating your teaching I’m a much better player. Hi Shawn Thank you for another great video. I just wanted to share my story I haven’t touched a club for 2 months due to tennis elbow and rotator cuff injury. I started seeing your videos when we visited our daughter in Toronto over the holidays ( we live in Scotland)and very quickly realised that this easy power you all have had happened to me before by accident but I couldn’t repeat and previous coaching and practising had eventually lead me to injury and pain. ( I’m 59 ) . I played for the first time 2 days ago and very quickly and excitedly realised that not only was my distance vastly improved but accuracy as well I mean really accurate. Your instruction in my opinion is inspirational and I can repeat it with out any effort or injury in fact the easier I swing the better, thanks to your great teaching. Thank you once again you have made me a very happy golfer with a. great story to tell everyone 😊 Kind Regards Blair ( 14 handicap)

I am always AMAZED at the clubhead speed you generate. In baseball I was a home run hitter and can hit a baseball a long way. But with golf my 7 iron swing speed is around 74 mph and 5 iron only about 78 mph. I'd like to increase my clubhead speed by a good 10% with my irons. Suggestions re your videos? Thanks!
@golflessons
@golflessons Год назад
HERE WE GO! Be prepared for a good 30 yard jump in distance which is standard for cases like you who are just average at baseball. I was the home run hitter of my team as well and my secret was always CHOOSING WHERE MY HOME RUN was going to go depending on the pitch I was getting. Golfers look down and see a ball and hit it. This is the strike out artist of the team who is told to hit the ball and pay attention to the ball without having a place to put it. As soon as you tell them to hit it somewhere realistic for them, they become great at judging pitches and start hitting. So go to my premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com (only $9.95 per month for my life’s wisdom-everyone needs to be able to afford great golf instruction) and see the following videos: So first thing you need to do is get back to the feel of your home runs with “throw the club” and “the throwing series” and when you throw and don’t let go of the club, you get that PRECIOUS SNAP RELEASE FEEL. Confirm the way your anatomy will yield to this release with “lead hand release”, trail hand release” “release fine tuning” and “snap release polish” Then we want to deliver this in the direction of the target: See “alignment reload” and you will understand why 99% of baseball hitters are pull hitters and why golfers are so keen to follow suit, and then see “blur of club” and “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” and things will start to go AH HA. Then see “the goldie locks series” to predict how your set up matches the picture so that you feel that every pitch is served up perfectly for a home run; meaning your ball position, distance to ball, grip and club face relationship and level are spot on and you can PREDICT SUCCESS if all you do is feel that momentus snap in the direction you want to start the ball. This is going to get you next level and still just scratch the surface of how much fun you are about to have my baseball friend!👍🫶😀👌👊💪

@golflessons

The first thing you need to see is the “pulling the shots left shawn clement” and get the perception of alignment taken care of and then see “at the ball vs through the ball shawn clement” to confirm that your action is well past the ball and into the direction you want to start it and not at the ball. Then practice hitting fades to balance the swing and see “how to match backswing to target shawn clement” When all is confirmed and you are still hooking, open the face until you don’t. On our premium channel, the titles would be -alignment reload -arc blur unstoppable momentum series (through the ball and in the proper direction) -kinetic chain facilitation series (through the ball) -fade fine tuning -draw fine tuning

Hi, I've always had trouble getting my hands/arms to snap over. I think I do it to control the ball. Sometimes the ball goes straight forward, while sometimes I drag it along in a pull. I block the correct movement and the result is a chicken wing and far from optimal length. I have hit several million shots on the range and manage to manipulate good ball contact, but thedistance i hit is much shorter than the power suggests. I really want to make this release happen, but when I have practiced making mistakes a million times, it's hard to make even something that looks so simple. It would make my life better if I got this release. Would greatly appreciate receiving the best advice to get rid of old sins and to get a better golf life.

Hey Dan! If you perform a task delivery through the ball and into the direction of the intended ball flight, with peak speed well past the ball and the ball still hooked to the left, then the face would be too closed. Been watching you for a while now and love your teaching. What would you rate your grip pressure from 1 to 10? Also when I set up to the ball and I think I am at a Comfortable distance if I practice cutting grass my path is always closer than my initial set up. Feels weird to chk that path over the ball though. Just wondering what ya recommend. Ty
@golflessons
@golflessons Год назад
Just means you are either standing up through impact and not staying on task; on our premium channel, the “kinetic chain facilitation series” is a very telling task and you will feel the need to squat to collect the grass from down there and then release and stand up towards where you want to release the grass clippings or the divot peel. Then see “the goldie locks series” and see the one pertaining to the distance to ball; if you are trying to hit the ball vs trying to deliver the ball into a target, this difference in focus changes the distance to ball in a BIG way and can easily lead to inconsistencies in contact!

SLIGHT CUP IS A PROPER HINGE STEVE! 😝 What you are experiencing is the existing stupidity of today’s instruction where they ask you to use a neutral grip AND THEN HAVE THE GAUL TO ASK YOU TO BOW THE WRISTS TO SQUARE THE FACE BECAUSE YOU HAVE A SLICE PROBLEM!! Absolutely insane; make sure you check out “is your swing underpowered shawn clement” and “most important video on grip ever shawn clement” When you hinge with an open hand, it is possible to have a flatter back of hand; but as soon as you close the hand to make a fist around your grip, if you flatten the wrist you prevent the wrist from hinging. So when you do hinge with a closed hand, the back of the hand looks slightly cupped…

So, just to be clear, you are saying that, in layman's terms, both wrists hinge straight up. Most of the teaching out there says left wrist hinges straight up and the right wrist hinges back. The right wrist position is like a waiter holding a tray tilted slightly down. When I hinge both my wrists straight up (sorry I don't know the terminology -supination, pronation etc.) it limits my club arc. It seems to be working for you though.
@golflessons
@golflessons Год назад
Yes, I have heard that; the biggest goo crap on how the wrists are used EVER. JUST LOOK AT HOW WE DO TENNIS, FISHING, HAMMERING, AXE, THROWING A FOOTBALL ETC…WE DON’T EVER DO IT THAT WAY!!! Once the hands are on the club, they need to feel like they are being placed by the swing and NOT INTERFERING WITH THE DARN THING!! Stay with what we do, it is the way the human anatomy and human movement patterns were designed to sling objects…

You totally left out how important it is to grip that handle super tight. I find it impossible to not have a nice release when I have tight grip pressure.

Secure but attentive to the snap release of the baseball swing; not too light that it comes out of the hands and prevents the weight of the club from releasing you fully!

@@golflessons When you had that one armed swing at end of video I bet you were gripping it too lightly. I will do that same thing a few times a round when I am not attentive to my grip pressure. It is amazing the compressed feel you get from contact with a tight grip.

I’ve found if you squeeze too tight you will tense the muscles in and around the wrists which in turns ruins any chance of a natural wrist hinge: Gripping the club firm is important but not at the cost of locking up your wrists!

I think you're mistaking gravity for centrifugal force. But, that's ok. We know what you mean.

Gravity makes you release your club, how’s that possible? Creative use of physics.

Swinging a weighted club in a downward arcing direction will remove any inclination to prevent wrist release! Symbiosis with Newtons law.
@jksaarinen
@jksaarinen Год назад
@@C02045 jep nothing to do with gravity. Newton’s law states that an object only changes velocity only because of force. Now this makes golf club release much more intresting compared someone saying it’s happens because of gravity.

Here is the deal Juha: You just happen to be a gravity genius and have a self preserving wiring system fully evolved around it with a brain that seeks the path of least resistance to keep you on the planet as long as possible to make lots of babies! If you were a lumberjack 200 years ago and had to chop down your trees to survive the winter, you would not fight the axe; your would use THE WEIGHT OF THE AXE to deliver your actions. Same for golf; the more you force or control, the more energy you spend and then less efficient you are. USE MOMENTUM AND GET OUT OF IT’S WAY.

@@golflessons Great now that we have clarified that release is not happening because of gravity we can move on. The question I struggle the most is why so strong right hand grip is needed? It would be much easier to use the same exact momentum you describe with weaker grip, which it much easier to manage through the impact.

I been fighting with my grip forever. I have super strong grip and u hinted I might need to make my right hand match the left. So I overlapped the right hand almost all the way on top and am not killing 4-Gap almost dead straight. It’s weird tho on driver it’s exact opposite. Have to wrap the rigjt hand super far underneath. Played yesterday in 40’degree weather still compressing the crap out of the ball

Very logical for the driver! See “most overlooked detail with driver shawn clement” and “most important video on grip ever shawn clement”
