The Peter Pan Problem

This was said to be one of the biggest mistakes WED made when creating Peter Pan’s Flight 🙈
Though the Fantasyland dark rides were a hit from the beginning of Disneyland in 1955, they realized immediately that they didn’t have enough capacity. It wasn’t until the 1964 New York World’s Fair (and the prodding of Nunis, aka “Hop-a-long Capacity”) that Disney finally found methods for moving more people through an attraction per hour.
But even with many upgrades in the 1983 Fantasyland remodel, Peter Pan’s flight in Disneyland (as well as the one in Walt Disney World) still suffers from extremely low capacity. That is why the line is always so long, because it’s a slow loading, low-capacity attraction. Some have said the wait is not worth it to a 2.25-3min ride (depending on the version you are on), but for many this attraction is a must-do in the Disney parks.
There’s a significance there, in the wait. We continue to join the queue, though this ride is one of the shortest rides in duration of all the Disney attractions. Maybe it’s because the idea that we don’t have to grow up is a hope we hold close, even for two and a half minutes at a time. Or maybe we all just want to be able to fly, even for a moment, away to our own Neverlands 💜
“We were talking about what things we could use for Fantasyland in some of the rides. And we kidded about Peter Pan. ‘We could do a Peter Pan fly-through.’ While Walt was gone, Bill made a little schematic birds-eye view of where you would go, and that became the ride.” - Richard Irvine

This ride is so popular I don’t know why Disney doesn’t make an other ride with the same ride system. Theme it to Mary Poppins. There are 2 dumbos, as well as Magic Carpet so two similar rides wouldn’t be a problem.

That ride is weirdly one of the most memorable moments I have from all park visits I had as a child, even though I only rode it maybe once. I leaned over the edge and looked down, and I remember thinking "We're so high up! Wait, no we're not, but it looks like we are, so maybe we really are?" It's also a memory of my Mom and Dad having a good day together.

Yeah Walt never meant for it to be a museum, more like a living organism that changes and grows with time. He once said the storybookland canal boats was just a temporary little ride until they could get something better.

I keep reminding myself of that when I mourn Maelstrom but I will never forgive The Great Movie Ride being replaced with what, in my view, is a lack-luster ride (though it has a great story). It isn't a roller coaster unless it can go up and down inclines. And honestly, it was such a unique attraction that was replaced with a common attraction.

The first year Disney World was opened I got to go. To ride each ride you had to pay a certain number of tickets, but we didn't have enough money to buy a lot of them, so I savored each moment on the rides, thoroughly captivated. On the Peter Pan ride, the ship was a wonder and I didn't mind at all when it paused at the scene where Capt. Hook balanced atop the crocodile jaws. As Hook did splits, we waited. And waited. Our ship was at the top of the up and down cycle. Finally, someone came with a ladder and helped us down. As we walked through the rest of the ride and exited, we were given a long, long string of tickets, maybe even more than we started the day with! Best Disney moment in my past 50 years!

I wish people wouldn't bring up the tickets, it might give the executives some ideas about where to nickle and dime people.
@57thorns

@@SmallSpoonBrigade They obviously make more money from people bying all day passes, and selling more passes than they can really accomodate. You pay for a full day of queueing, and you might get 10 minutes of ride for your money. Imagine if they guaranteed a maximum queue time of ten minutes at every ride? The would have to reduce the number of visitors significantly. And then there is food, if you can ride instead of queue, they sell less food, You might just stay there for 3-4 hours until you fell done and then leave and eat somewhere else.

I finally got to ride it as an adult. It was almost time for the park to close for the day, and the line was not as long, about 40min. The 'line ride' as I call it - the part of the line that begins to immerse you into the vibe of the experience was great!
@TheLadsBandLive
@TheLadsBandLive 4 месяца назад
The Peter Pan queue is brutal: No shade, cramped, winding, boring, no storytelling, no distractions, ride frequently pauses due to loading/unloading trouble, lots of line-cutting, and torture for fidgety little ones (and their parents) to endure. Love the ride but I won’t attempt it if the wait is more than 30min, and that’s still crazy lopsided when comparing ride vs wait. Monsters Inc. has nearly the exact same issues.

I am saddened for those who have never experienced that true Disney magic as a child, particularly on this ride, and at a short wait time to where one could ride again within the hour. I was blessed with so many magical years. Thanks Grandparents, Parents, Walt, and all those who designed and built Disneyland.
@57thorns
@57thorns Месяц назад
The problem here is greed. They could allow less people in, and instead have witing lists for the tickets. Then people would complain about the tickets not being available. Or they could just raise ticket prices to compensate, as they are already doing with "express passes".
@moonglow630
@moonglow630 4 месяца назад
If they had made the ride longer, they could’ve accommodated more guests, and thus shortened the lines. A cheat back in the day when I lived in So Cal, was to go on it during the parades when all the families who would otherwise be in line were distracted. Don’t know how well that works now though.
@gaerekxenos
@gaerekxenos 3 месяца назад
Not by much if there is any improvement, unfortunately. The ride itself is pretty slow, so the queue is still going to move pretty slowly due to how few people are still going to get on and off and at the rate that the ride moves
@matter9
@matter9 3 месяца назад
A longer ride would make line wait times worse. Ride length is independent of throughput. More seats per gondola/ship thing, or more gondolas would help. A longer ride with all else being equal would make the problem worse. The only thing that would change is retrospect feelings as to whether the ride was worth the wait.

I saw in the comments someone said the waited for this ride right before park closing and the line wasn’t that long (about 40 minutes!) That’s not very long? Are you kidding me. I think it’s easy to view it thought our 2024 lens and see it differently now, but rather than erasing history, we need to keep media around like this so we can have conversations about what has changed (and why).

Likely because it’s really expensive there 😂 my fam of 5 couldn’t afford the premier pass when we went, but I’m glad you had that fun experience for your honeymoon! 😊

I’ve been going on Peter Pan’s flight since I was old enough to remember it. There’s something so magical about flying around Neverland in a pirate ship, and the stories I have about it make it all the more precious. When I was maybe four, the ride stopped, and I was absolutely *terrified* that the animatronics would attack me, and every time my mom tried to talk, I would shush her, because she was going to wake them up! And because I have that memory, the ride means that much more to me

The only time I went to Disney World was during a work outing when the company running the event rented the park. We got to go on the rides with no wait. Honestly, that’s the only way I would visit. Waiting in line sounds like a nightmare.

Peter Pan's Flight is my favorite "slow ride" at WDW! I went for two days 09/02 & 09/03, we did MNSSHP on a Mon and we only had to wait like 15min. We did all 4 parks the next day, finishing with MK, and we only had to wait 25min (because it was during the fireworks time, but the fireworks were delayed because of rain).

We were semi local annual pass holders for years and have been many many times. My biggest recommendation is look up the expected crowd sizes and ONLY go when the crowds are below average. What you get out of Disney is almost a direct inverse proportion to the crowd sizes. Dont pay those prices just to stand in long lines. It really isn’t worth it.

Yes I went back in March and I struggled to understand why “It’s a Small World” arguably one of the most famous long term rides was only a 5 min wait and “Peter Pans Flight” a few feet across the main walk way was 90 MINUTES!! Yes I road and it was awesome! But still…

I vaguely remember this ride from when I went to Disney World as a young child. I always thought I just remembered it wrong because I thought I rode on a pirate ship that flew, and as an adult that made no sense to me. I thought I misremembered the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Now I know I wasn't making it up, I just forgot this ride exists. Thank you =)

I’ve been to Disney World several times over the years and Peter Pan’s Flight has always been the one ride that I go on every single time. I can’t express how much I love this ride. It’s gone through changes over the years but I still love it was much today as I did over 40 years ago. They’ve gotten rid of Mickey’s house, the original Snow White ride, and 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and it didn’t bother me but if Peter Pan’s Flight ever goes away I just don’t think I’d be able to ever go back.

I've only ever been to the Disney parks in the US, so I will say that upfront as a caveat. My childhood park is Disneyland, as a West Coast girl. Peter Pan is quite possibly my favorite ride, even to this day. A couple of years ago, when Disney World opened but Disneyland was still closed, my husband and I took the family there. The queue for this ride in Florida is WAY better. It seems to me like they paid much more attention to the wait for the ride in building the parks in Florida than they did in California. I think this has a lot to do with a lack of experience the first time around. Plus having more space in Florida I think helped.

This ride is really cool but I don’t think it is anywhere near worth waiting 2-3 hours except MAYBE if you have a kid that you’re sure is going to be super into it or even yourself are a super big fan. But I do recommend checking it out if the lines are reasonable.

This ride is one of my earliest childhood memories when I was 4. I couldn't find the tracks under the ship and couldn't figure out how the ride worked and it made it feel like real magic to me. 🥰 (I also got lost in the Swiss Family Robinson treehouse because I had seen that movie so many times and couldn't believe that it was real or that I was actually there. My Dad let go of my hand for a moment and I wandered off to inspect things! I don't remember being lost, but I do remember the awe and joy of seeing the treehouse!) Disney World at 4 really was so magical.

If you have to wait 2 hours to ride an attraction it's not worth it You buy a full day's pass for over $100, and you end up riding two or three rides because you're spending the entire day waiting in line It's just as bad as Canada's Wonderland and Canada's Wonderland is terrible when it comes to waiting in line. I waited in line for a roller coaster for 4 and 1/2 hours. Biggest fucking mistake of my life and I learned I will never ever wait in line for a ride anywhere ever again

Back in 1989 to 2002 as Disneyland AVP holders when tje kids wanted to go on Peter Pan we would go to there early Sunday morning as a first ride. Wait times were less than 10 minutes and usually rode it twice before going on other rides.

Sometimes the wait is worth it. The changes can take away the magic. I remember riding this ride, I can still go there and fly like Peter Pan in my mind. Those who fight Walt Disney must have an evil streak in them. Only tyrants and dictators and cult leaders fight those who dare to dream. Keep dreaming! They fear ideas because that threatens their control. Control threatens their power. Power is all they care about. Disney tried to teach the children the difference between good and evil, how important dreaming and having your own ideas was to having freedom. You can know who the evil ones are in real life, by seeing them fight to stop the children from dreaming and having ideas of their own. You can know them because they fight anything that threatens their power.... You can know them because they will fight Disney, himself.

Oh yeah the problem is the same one that's always the case with everything, especially in the summer when the brazillian tour groups come. Not like i want to go anymore, you'd think it was a six flags in the smartphone age with how they pointlessly overcharge for things they used to give out for free and removed everything that made the place feel like magic instead of the boring advertisement for itself it is now. "When do we get to the park??" "This IS the park"

Last time I went was in 2016 and it was a terrible experience, not at all the Disneyland I remembered. There was trash absolutely everywhere, the employees were incredibly rude, the food was more expensive than ever but entirely bland with no flavor, and the first day half the park was unopened until after 12 because a large portion of their employees straight up didn’t show up for work because they needed to go vote and they are too incompetent to plan ahead around their work schedule. Not to mention they keep upping the park capacity so it was way way more crowded than ever before.

Disney would probably be sad at the direction executives have taken it. Park attractions haven’t changed in decades probably because they’re afraid of losing the nostalgia factor or afraid they can’t make something better than Disney himself. Makes me sad when hearing that Disney himself liked to cycle through and come up with new rides and attractions if something better was presented.

All rides have wait times. That's not a problem, that's a perk of even getting to be there in the first place. If you think that's an issue, stay away from Carowinds or Emerald Point, LOL those are regular wait times for almost any ride at those.
