Bioshock 2 was a really fun game. It polished the gameplay of one and had a sort of analysis on an ideology. It's just that analysis is put secondary in favor of a more character driven story, of the big daddy wishing to rescue his little sister

When Ryan says, "we all make choices but in the end our choices make us" I believe he was saying we all have free will to make how own choices but in the end, the very choices we made determine who we are.

I have found Bioshock 2 to be a nice inversion of Bioshock's overarching individualism and objectivism. Where Andrew Ryan was about the individual throughout everything and that society should come after the individual, Sofia Lamb was a transhumanist communist that believed in society coming before all else. the individual needed to be sacrificed for the greater good. However, the theme with the protagonist is that an emotional connection is enough to disregard this narrow 'greater good.'

John Smith OK pointless makes sense, it is fun. I just don't think its poorly written; its just an experiment that came up off target. I'm 50\50 on the art idea. I've just finished both bioshock and bioshock 2 and can 100% say for sure I prefer 2. Yea the plot is maybe less pretentious and less ideological, however that's countered by how emptional it is, more precisely; sad. I honestly cried at the ending. the levels are barely smaller than bioshock, but it's more direct and it felt more "straight forward" story wise (in the way I felt involved, instead of taking care of chores like we actually were in 1 for Atlas) however the gameplay is MIIILES better, you can duo hand plasmids and weapons, switch between ammo types MUCH faster and more things that are just more convenient. and finally, the most important thing..... the little sister don't look like hideous alien babies

+Lyriel Luna Well, could be kind, unless your a monster. One of my favorite things about 2, I believe it handles multiple endings the best of any game I've played, what's even worse than seeing just you become a monster (Bioshock 1) is realizing you turned the girl who looked up to you into a monster, makes it even worse. Honestly, Bioshock 1's 2 endings felt pointless, I believe they even said they didn't want one at first, seemed forced in and really didn't do too much for the plot.

I love the idea of making an entire game as an "okay, dumbass, let's try that." response to Ayn Rand's ideas. I'd love to see even more Bioshock games, each of them generally unrelated to each other, each exploring a philosophical idea of how the world should work and taking it to the extreme. There's a lot of space to play in there.

some problems. 1 the city was a massive success that created tons of new technology 2 ken levine is a anti capitalist/leftist/possibly communist or at the very least is communist sympathetic 3 its a fictional setting. these ideas were already tried, they led to the gilded age in late 1800s america which was one of the most prosperous times in history of humanity. the entire human race was very successful in this period of time. are these ideas ideal, no, maybe not. they would have to be studied, and we would have to discuss them. but nevertheless, this is nothing more than a "let me create a bad situation as an argument against something" type polemic. I can take any system or ideology and simply set it in a dystopia. It would take me 5 seconds - after all I am the writer.
@someguy8375
@someguy8375 Год назад
@@phillip8596 the gilded age was a time of huge prosperity, but largely for the upper classes. for the rest of the folk it was a time of union busting, awful workers rights, and huge exploitation of the working classes. This is paralleled across the bioshock games, both as rapture ends up in the same system through a lack of regulation, or as Columbia directly comes from that exact system. Fink and his company are the epitamy of a gilded age industrialist and business, and Booker is a former member of the Pinkertons, the largest gilded age union busting force.
@phillip8596
@phillip8596 Год назад
@@someguy8375 Define prosperity, 1800s is when a lot of our modern technology was created. Modern medicine was created during this time, airplanes, electricity. Some wealth trickles downwards. If wealth has to start life as being the toys of the wealthy, then so be it. What would you rather have, inequality for a few decades and then widespread access to a technology, or no technology at all?
@someguy8375
@someguy8375 Год назад
@@phillip8596by prosperity I meant material things, such as food, water, shelter, clothing, commodities, etc. But to touch on the technological aspect, the technological progress of the time was tenuously linked to the lack of regulation at best, and was largely to do with a continuation of technological progress that predated the gilded age and continued long afterward, see the invention of the dynamo, matches, and the microphone, which all took place in the early 1800s, prior to the gilded age, and the invention of the jet engine, major advances in particle and nuclear physics, and most of the us electrical grid, all achieved in the interwar, ww2, and post ww2 periods. Also, decades of observation of the us starting with Reagan has shown that trickle down economics doesn't work and that policies set in place to facilitate it just result in richer rich and poorer poor
@phillip8596
@phillip8596 Год назад
@@someguy8375 Yes, then we are using the same term, and I would very much say that 1800s was a period of time when everybody had access to vast material prosperity, much greater than any generation before them. Even the poor even the working class. " But to touch on the technological aspect, the technological progress of the time was tenuously linked to the lack of regulation at best," I disagree, the technological progress of the time was linked to deregulation yes, because over-regulation is always a negative factor, but, the primary reason why there was a boom in innovation in 1800s was entirely due to a culture of innovation and innovators who sought to create a new technology, and then profit off of it. Tesla was nothing more than a budding inventor, who sought to patent his work and become rich in the process. If you create incentives for people like that, via the patent process, they will certainly begin spending time and brainpower on creating new ideas. Plus the printing press revolution, the fact that you finally could start making money from your writings. Public intellectuals, despite the fact that a lot of them lean left, are highly capitalist. They basically earn revenue from their own words, in a completely capitalist way, marketing themselves, and selling their appearances and books. "and the invention of the jet engine, major advances in particle and nuclear physics, and most of the us electrical grid, all achieved in the interwar, ww2, and post ww2 periods. " I would argue all of those inventions are actually quite unremarkable and were the result of design bureaus which are a poor substitute for the individual inventor. In a design bureau, you have a guaranteed job, and no real personal reward mechanic for a great new idea. Jobs in a lot of respects are terrible incentive wise. Once you have the job, you are safe, so you have no negative incentives to slacking...but if you outdo yourself, what is the most you'll get. A 10% bonus that is still subject to the whims of your manager? And you are still behold to your management? Design bureaus of world war eras were lacking and highly inefficient and stagnant. We cannot rely on them to generate innovation reliably. "Also, decades of observation of the us starting with Reagan has shown that trickle down economics doesn't work and that policies set in place to facilitate it just result in richer rich and poorer poor" This is an empirical argument (crude "we saw what happened and what happened was bad" type argument) and it's incorrect and there are good reasons for why it's incorrect. Firstly, Raegan presided over the quickest turnaround of the American economy. I have no idea where you people get this idea that Raegan was a bad or evil president. Raegan did a complete 180 on the US economy, and took it from the depths of 1970s stagflation and deadlock of 1970s union politics that almost killed the US economy, and brought back a significant amount of prosperity. Raegan is not a miracle worker, so American manufacturing still died in US due to unions that kept demanding higher and higher wages and caused more and more disruption and strikes and protests, which is why American manufacturing went to Mexico and latin america, where of course the quality suffered and jobs were lost, and if it didn't, then it got replaced by Asian manufacturing, companies like Toyota Honda etc. Japanese electronics manuacturers became prominent in this period. Sony became a household name in 1980s. So the following are true: A raegan was a great president domestically and economically and lead a complete turnaround of the US economy from the left wing trash economy created by 1970s union politics. B trickle down economics are not necessarily an aspect of Raegan's policy or were implemented by Raegan, they exist by themselves unto themselves. C trickle down economics work financially and technologically, you need rich people with lots of disposable income to buy risky costly new technology, we would not have Flat screen TVs or Asian audio technology, from Hi Fi to mp3 to walkmen if we did not have trickle down economics and rich people to buy the first set of generations of products. Fast cars, luxury cars, also bought by the rich. First washing machines were marketed to the rich or affluent. D trickle down economics allows rich people to actually exist, which means, they can invest and risk their money in various businesses. Where do businesses come from. Do they all come from a bank? Do you think this bank doesn't ask for collateral first? A lot of businesses come from rich people. We need rich people so we can keep creating new businesses. Without the rich, you don't really have a rich and diverse business environment.

I feel as though Matpat may have misunderstood that qoute "The choices make us." Doesn't that mean that what we do, our actions form us as people? Isn't it the things you do that determine what kind of person you are? Do more good things than bad, you're a good person, do more bad things than good, you're a bad person. I don't think it means what he took it to mean.
@millerrepin4452
@millerrepin4452 8 лет назад
+Drellistenstomusic That's what I thought to but think of it like this, you may have good intentions and try to do good things but what if that good choice turns out bad for everyone. You made your choice but you never had power to determine it's effects on the world.
@Evaquiel
@Evaquiel 8 лет назад
Yeah, i kinda agree with you both. Maybe like this: yes, a man have the free will to choose and this actions will define him. Period. However, at some point we are all "slaves" and we obey some rules and do things we wouldnt choose to do, but we do cause we are "obligated" to do. We dont have a "choice". We have to study, work, maybe in a bad job, eat bad food, or good food. We are always slaves of something. So in the right circunstances, its romantic to say that our actions defines us. But what about when we dont have a choice? How can one judge another by killing someone, if its in self defense? How can one judge another for "choosing to be in a stupid job, if he did everything he could to get a better one but they just didnt give it to him? In conclusion, in order to surive, we will always accept to "obey" someone at some point to get through the next level. But does this "obligated" actions really defines us? The question is, were they REALLY the only choice? Or you were nust not good enough to see another?
@FlawedIntellect
@FlawedIntellect 8 лет назад
+Evaquiel Choice only exists accompanied by outcomes. You can't have free will without consequences. The "free" aspect of "free will" refers to the ability to make decisions. It doesn't refer to being "free" from consequences or responsibilities.
@juaninamillion5864
@juaninamillion5864 8 лет назад
Here's my theory."We make choices but in the end,our choices makes us" by taking what you suggest and the video suggest,I reckon that what that quote really is trying to say is that,after we have made that choice,the outcome of making that choice manipulates or controls how we are going to make our next choices in life.Take note that a certain outcome could only be made possible by comitting on a certain choice.Thus,it has this vicious cycle in which our previous choices determines how we are going to make our choices in the future and so on.Choice made=Outcome,therfore Outcome=Choice that we made.So that choice that we had chosen in the past ultimately make us,rather than we making the choices as had we not made choices in the past,we wouldnt have been making choices now.Couldn't really get this out of my brain in proper wording so I hope you have some idea on what I am trying to suggestt.
@cammameil
@cammameil 8 лет назад
+Drellistenstomusic I wasn't even going that deep. I simply thought that was the game's way of saying, "You're only going to get so much Adam, and then you are going to have to fight whatever is at the end of the game. So don't go crazy at the vending machines." Since there is no "buy back" mechanic for plasmids, every choice you make sort of determines what the final fight will be like before you even get there.

Bioshock 2 demonstrates why Ayn Rand was against altruism. Sofia Lamb wanted to turn her daughter on a perfect altruist being. But ironically, that made her daughter miserable. She sacrificed her daughter's life to the benefit of other's. Altruism, in Rand's words, turns the human being into a sacrificial animal.
@Nokkenbuer
@Nokkenbuer 7 лет назад
It had exactly zero commentary on "communism". _Bioshock 2_ was a botched and shoddy attempt at presenting some vague form of extreme collectivism and religious zeal using the consequentialist ethics of a fictional sociologist. Nothing in the game remotely resembled anything socialism or communism. If anything, _Bioshock 2_ is better interpreted even as a continuation of the first game, namely that the power vacuum that "anarcho-"capitalism inevitably causes will tend toward extreme forms of pseudo-collectivist authoritarianism and that capitalism in general tends people toward embracing religion as the opium of the masses to distract from the alienation and suffering that capitalism causes. It's clear that if the second game was meant to be a commentary on communism, like you said, then the developers and writers of the game understand literally nothing about communism or radical leftist ideas in general. Unfortunately, neither does the majority of the general populace, so the game only serves to reinforce that ignorance.

On one hand, it's a warning about the fact that we can restrict ourselves by making choices thoughtlessly until we are defined by them, but on the other hand it also promises the freedom to control not only what we do but who we are.

As much as I loved Bioshoke Infinite, I think SpecOps: The Line handled a lot of these concepts far better then BS:I.
@thomasfenner3048
@thomasfenner3048 9 лет назад
Romeo Cote These two games are my favourite games to be clear first off, so I do have a little bit of bias. In regards to the exploration of free will and the idea of the game not forcing you to choose, but instead you do, Spec Ops: The Line is far superior. However, Bioshock includes so many other elements including the idea of God, biting satire of American culture and an amazing display of empathy. The endings of the two games are curiously similar and for some reason I count them as one game, each on extreme ends of the optimistic-pessimistic scale. Still, Spec Ops: The Line fell flat in some areas (I say this with a grudging heart), the scathing satire was censored to appeal to a greater audience and the audience empathy was never established, arguably making the point driven more home as it was explained what the audience was doing but it is a flaw nonetheless. Despite this, both are some of the greatest games ever made and are a standard for narratives in gaming.

Spec ops the line had a masterful 3rd or final act, bio shock infinite ending was pretty pointless and didn't invoke any emotional feelings.
@TheSkyHazCloudz
@TheSkyHazCloudz 9 лет назад
Denzel, Infinite didn't provoke any emotions? Really? I feel like people with story telling in general tend to think that unless a story is sad/heart-wrenching, it's not emotional. That's bullshit. Infinite provoked plenty of emotions (for me, at least). There's plenty of awe (entering Colombia) and love (developing a bond with Liz) and shock (Daisy threatening Fink's son, Booker's brutal murder of Comstock, Booker being Comstock, ect) as well as a variety of other emotions. Sadness isn't the only thing on the spectrum.
@sanoichiro
@sanoichiro 9 лет назад
Denzel Romero I strongly disagree with that. Bioshock Infinite put me in a very vulnerable place. I was emotionally attached to both the characters, and what they represented for me. I was pretty shaken by the concept that no matter how hard they (and I) had worked, there was no conceivable scenario where Booker and Elizabeth have a happy ending. Considering their bond, it's quite sad to me.

The second half of your analysis (the Infinite part) is flat out wrong. Columbia is not based on Washington DC. It is based on the real city of Columbia, built on the south side of Chicago for the World's Fair, and the residence of America's first recorded serial killer and possibly the first American owner of a torture dungeon: H.H. Holmes. After the Fair concluded many of the buildings fell into disrepair and were torn down to build other things as part of Chicago. The Science and Industry Museum, the Field Museum and the Planetarium are some of the few surviving structures from that era. The real city of Columbia was a love letter to Manifest Destiny and to technology being the way to do it, not American Exceptionalism - which is more of an international, late 20th century idea, not a late 19th century one. The city we see in Infinite is revealed to be from the World's Fair itself in a news reel that is seen in a nickelodeon in or near the bar at the beginning when the player first acquires the "shields" power up. In the same area, there is another newsreel that reveals that Comstock has been bombing Chinese revolutionaries. He is not trying to pacify them, he is trying to "civilize" them. If he was operating under the ideology of American Exceptionalism, he would try to negotiate with them using force as the stick and trade as the carrot, and he would try to avoid hurting their infrastructure or their economy as much as possible. He's clearly not trying to do any of those things. He's trying to turn them into vassals of Columbia, a more perfect America in his view, as part of Manifest Destiny. To put it in Star Trek terms, Picard is an American Exceptionalist as much as the Borg are Manifest Destiny practitioners. And that's where your analysis breaks down. "Join us or die" is Comstock's philosophy, so much so that you must be baptized to enter the city, even if you were already baptized, because Columbia's baptisms mean more than everyone else's. That's not Exceptionalism, that's Manifest Destiny. The reason I bring up the baptism point is also to highlight the difference between Exceptionalism and MD. Exceptionalism has a component to its thinking that both absolves and protects people who follow its tenets from making mistakes or having to take responsibility for them because God is on their side and looking out for their interests since they are in line with God's own interests in their thinking. Comstock does not believe that shit for a second. His God wants the individual to do for themselves. Comstock's God won't intervene, won't forgive, and doesn't care about the outcome, so long as one does not sin. That's a very different attitude than the personal one on one connection to God that an Exceptionalist would claim to have. For Comstock, God put the mountain that is Manifest Destiny in your path, but it is completely up to you to climb it, climb it well, and climb it without sin until you reach the summit. For an Exceptionalist, using the same metaphor, God would have also installed a heated cable car with wi-fi in it. An Exceptionalist would hardly know there was a struggle going on, and deep down they believe God wants them to do it, and that following his will is easy. Finally, yes, some monuments in DC look like buildings from the real Columbian Exposition at the World's Fair, but that is only because they all draw inspiration architecturally from the same sources, Greek and Roman ruins. These philosophy episodes are usually really good, but you really dropped the ball here.

Dude, you kinda missed it on the "American Exceptionalism doesn't exist in 19th century" part. "American Exceptionalism" does exist back then and maybe even earlier, just not under that name. Read more on it and you will be surprised how far back that idea goes.
@cammameil
@cammameil 7 лет назад
xFirebird925x As far as I know from my own reading, only Quakers had what you would call a personal relationship with god that far back. Every other form of Protestant religion just treated you like a tooth in the gear, completely replaceable and irrelevant to god. And the personal relationship is the central thesis to American Exceptionalism, writ large, substituting the nation for the individual. If they called it something else, it was because it was something else, because even religious people didn't believe god was on their side, in the same way that people did in the 20th century and do today.

While I may not personally agree much with her, thank you for at least acknowledging Rand's ideas as a legitimate philosophical viewpoint. I think too many instinctively outright deny her thoughts entirely, which in my opinion goes against the essence of philosophical discourse and enquiry. edit- I also wanted to say, I am loving this closer integration of philosophy with the actual content of the game (instead of just 8-bit visuals). And personally don't mind if you were to do this more often...
@politure

Lint I think she is a complete douchebag, and that her thoughts cannot apply to a functioning world with more than one being in it capable of making choices. My interpretation of "in the end, our choices make us." Was that our choices reflect on who we are, they define us as people. Considering in BioShock if you save the Little Sisters your ending is that you bring them topside and give them a real life, if you kill them you take control of rapture and wage war on the surface like the power hungry sociopath you've proven yourself to be. The original BioShock promotes the importance of choice, killing or sparing the Little Sisters is one of the few things that you were not commanded to do by Atlas, everything else was indeed beyond your control. I think the message is that we are defined not by the lot we are given, but by what we make of it.

TheKersey475 Well, no, because in Infinite the people of Columbia deride Lincoln and praise John Wilkes Booth as a hero. And since Lincoln was the first and archetypical Republican that pretty much makes the citizens of Columbia not Republican. If anything they take more after the imperialist and racist Andrew Jackson (who was a Democrat, by the way. The South was a Democratic stronghold in the slavery days of yore, too). And also, not all Republicans appreciate Objectivism for its atheistic, anti-statist approach. The Reagan loving neo-cons perhaps, but even they just cheery pick Objectivism for what they like and don't like. So no, neither of these games have anything to do with the Republican party, that's just strawmaning you're doing there.

Personally, I've never played the game but from what I gather your stuck in space and your trying to find a way out, so surely levine could of got inspiration to turn bioshock not just into a game but a masterpiece that makes us argue and think about many possibilities that the game it self holds. In theory, maybe theres more to system shock [2] than what meets the eye, but it is a hell of a guess, oh well.

3:57 about ryan "perverting" objectivism. He didn't until he did completely break it. In a way... Ryan left the ADAM market unregulated (as his free market policies indicated) and that severely fucked rapture. So, after seeing his utopic model of a society crash in flames infront of him he resorted to do a 180 and employed authoritarianism (still sticking up with his individualiat ideals). Even if he wasnt really a "parasytic" politician in Rapture he had hold of pheromones which could mentally control the population of splicers, therefor prioritizing his freedom to rule over others freedom to live basically. He was so free, that nobody else ever was again, which is ironic.

OK seriously, I don't get all the hate for Bioshock 2, sure the story wasn't as good as the others but just because you don't get a mindblowing plot twist doesn't make the game bad, and quite honestly the plot twist in Infinite can be predicted the moment you realize that Elizabeths Tears are portals to other dimensions

Bioshock 2 does get far too much hate. I must admit, even though I loved the series I did delay playing 2 for quite a while. The problem people find with it, which, as you can see by looking through the comments, is that it doesn't play too much to the topics discussed in this video: the illusions of choice. However, as much of an oddball is, it still is good story wise, as much of an outlier it is in the series. Plus, the gameplay of 2 was much better than one, due to dual wielding, and some general changes. But yeah, long story short, definitely not a bad game.

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." --John Rogers

I find that the failures of rapture's objectivism came from two issues. 1. Not the deregulation, but the failure to communicate the side effects to the public. It is legal to smoke cigarettes, but it falls to the government or the news media to inform society of the risks. 2. The restrictions on free trade. This is where Ryan left libertarianism. By restricting trade, he created a black market, which is the last thing you want to do as a libertarian.

Bakorafanboy13 well we need to legalise all drugs and inform the people about sideeffects than to be a truely free nation, I mean maybe it would even be better than keeping them illegal.

Why ignore the second game? It really fits into the theme of choices, with an important message about free will and choice in how Delta starts as a slave to a system before being freed by Elenor. It then takes a much more interesting view on the idea of choice in how it shapes and influences others like Elenor. This also circles back into the idea of choice being an illusion in that, by defying her mother and following Delta's footsteps, Elenor is not really making a choice to defy her mother, but is instead following someone else's actions. This is shown best in how she treats little sisters and whether she saves her mother or not. If Delta spares others, she does the same. She never decides to do the opposite of what the player does and therefor it can be argued that her choices are not really her own.

Regarding the illusion of choice in Bioshock: Infinite, I thought the given examples of "choices" you make in the game were kinda odd. Choosing which pendant Elizabeth ends up wearing around her neck, the bird or the cage...that to me is a great example of a choice you make being meaningless; tossing the ball at the couple or at the racist announcer is another. It doesn't matter which you choose. What happens next is already decided for you. Just like it didn't matter that Booker had access to alternate universes or timelines. The end result was always going to be the same. That said, I enjoyed the heck out of this video. In fact, this channel is quickly becoming my new favorite. Keep up the AMAZING work!

I am 66 YO. The last game I played was “Breakout” in 1976 - lol. Of course I watched my 3 sons to through the Mario brothers - and all the ones that followed - stages. At the time I saw it as harmless. Until the “Blood Code” - which I finally did some proper parenting and realized that this was not good for an adolescent's developing mind. As the daughter of Conservative Activists in the 1960's - who graced my Christmas tree booty with books such as “Atlas Shrugged”, “We the Living”, “Animal Farm” and George Orwells' “1984” - I would say I have a pretty good idea of what the meaning of Freedom really is. Either you are Free, or you are not. Only your own gut can tell you what the difference is. Listen to it. BOOMER OUT

I'm not sure if the book is considered canon, but it did an excellent job of bridging together all of the characters you 'meet' via the audio diaries in Bioshock 1 and 2. It explains how Ryan started building Rapture, how Rapture rose to its top heights, and the specifics of its downfall. I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the games.

The Philosophy of Mass Effect or Dragon Age?
@commanderdanielcousland9981
@commanderdanielcousland9981 5 лет назад
Spoilers below. Dragon Age Origins philosophy revolves around the idea of who is the real monster and danger to Thedas. The genocidal monsters that endanger all life as we know it, or the important influential and powerful people who are supposed to be taking care of the innocent and protecting the people who they abuse. Throughout the game you the player learn of this great evil that is coming to destroy all life no matter it's race, gender, or belief. Even though this great threat is looming over the fictional kingdom, certain individuals perfer to take advantage of the situation and exploite it for their own benefit. Examples: Arl Howe murdering and stealing the lands of the Cousland family while their army was away to fight the Darkspawn. Prince Bhelan killing off one of his brother and blaming the other for the crime just to eliminating both of them from the line of dwarven succession. Bronca murdering her whole entire family and turning one of the people who loved her into a horrible broadmother all to aquire long forgotten knowledge. Mage Uthred who gathers an army of blood mage by convincing his young impressionable students to converse with demons. The son of the arl of denerim who harms the elven communities through racism, kidnapping of women, and murdering elf males instead of doing his duty and helping the suffering elfs. The elf chief (forgot his name) of the dalish elven tribals who created a werewolf plague to punish the people whose only crime was being the descendants of people who wronged the elf chief a couple of hundred years back. Loghian a national hero of the kingdom who betrayed the king, the Grey wardens (people whose sole job in life is to stop the genocidal monsters) who all died by the Darkspawn, just because Loghian wanted to seize power for himself and use it to squable with a neighboring country that had done some horrible things to Loghians family. Now you as the player, who have become a grey warden, a powerful individual, get the choice of doing your duty as a hero by protecting the people or doing whatever you want even if it means harming others. The best example of this is when you meet the son of Arl Redcliff, a boy who unknowingly allowed himself to be possessed by a demon just so he can save his father's life. You as the player can either kill the child which is a really bad thing to do but allows you to progress a lot quicker through the story, or you can travel to a far-off place to gather mages to help battle the demon and kick it out of the child's body. That is just one of the many many decisions that you can do that allows you to differentiate yourself from those that are corrupted literally or metaphorically versus the person who stays true to the Grey Warden Motto of protecting and serving th innocent. As for the sequels they're a little less interesting. Dragon Age 2 is whether you want to live in a safe world provided by a fascist order AKA Templar VS the right to live in a chaotic uncertainty that freedom offers. Unfortunately this game failed horribly at exploring this moral philosophy. Dragon Age Inquisition, basically things go bad over time, there is no god, just people who did good things and get worshiped. Also a lot of political shoehorning. I really hated this game.

The whole idea of whether the choices in a game are actually ours to make or if they're just up to the game is a theme handled insanely well in Spec Ops: The Line.
