Great video. I learned a little, but mostly just enjoyed seeing all the concepts presented so well.

Ashley, don't listen to the critics (except for the music part...). Make more videos about swimming.

It's always good to listen to critics. This video should not be used to learn physics. And yes, make more videos.

Still waiting to see some one talk about getting under the backwash (all the water you drag into the wall with you), which is physics.. How deep, how far do you have to go to get out from it. Phelps is a master of this. Also, Both butterfly kick and flutter kick are 'crack the whip' actions. The fly is a total body wave type crack the whip, from arms, head, and shoulders to to the tips of your toes. The flutter kick is still crack the whip, but the energy transfer from shoulders to toes is a spiral/torque motion similar to throwing or kicking, but they are more of a push, and swimming is a pull. The kick that syncs with the shoulder pull/rotation is the stronger one...

A few of the terms thrown around are sloppy physics. I do have an undergrad in Physics so I get particular about it. Momentum is not force. The term "torque" herein used seems meant as a way to initiate propulsion. Maybe yes, maybe no - or, put a different way, not exactly. The video correctly point out that torque will tend to drop the feet as the body rotates around the center of mass during the stroke. One thing that would have been interesting is to use instrumentation to measure drag when towing swimmers of different shapes, using different swimwear, caps, no caps, etc.. Body type goes a long way toward making a low-drag swimmer. I am a former runner just three years into learning to swim and I find I am still very, very slow in the pool despite having had decent speed running and cycling.

Most people , never mind college yahoos, have no idea about physics and the real terms. They are too concerned about mico agressions and being Woke. Of all the purported industrialized countries, the USA ranks last in education values, marks, and rigor. How did that happen? BS passed off as college degrees. Social Science instead of actual hard sciences and "Education" degrees given for race relations and not educational rigor. Some country, some education. Who is teaching our kids and what are they teaching. As Noam Chompsky says about war , politics, tampax , or education: Is is all marketing and propaganda and almost never substance or truthful. F=Ma PxV = NRT etc.. pretty basic concepts eh? Go ask any non science teacher at any major us college? Second derivative of time with respect to distance? You don't have to Liebnitz to know. Ask any art major, education major, or football star?

This is great, except for the traditional irritating background music used in swimming videos. You can find out more about drag forces at The Race Club videos. This is a very good summary. Remember, the force required to overcome drag is a squared function, but the power input is a cubed function. So, the faster you go, the greater the drag effect.
@academicjock
@academicjock 6 лет назад
The exponential growth comparison between drag and the power to overcome it is even GREATER than what you've written.

Ashley, it would be great if you make a video about resistance swimming using Aqua Volo drag socks, webbed gloves, Finis Zoomers, drag pocket belts, etc. I've been doing resistance swimming for several years and my strength has increased tremendously. Just don't use background music anymore! ;-)

GREAT INFORMATION. Too bad it is wrecked by the music and the near monotone voice of the presenter. Half the time I was thinking, "What did she say?" Also, there is NO RESEARCH that shows bi-lateral breathing is better.
@charleskorndorffer
@charleskorndorffer 6 лет назад
This isn't quite right. The reason bi-lateral breathing is popular is because it develops both sides evenly. Bi-lateral breathing may not make a difference during a race, but if you breathe to one side consistently during practice, you tend to offset your balance, slice the water with the arm behind your breath, and actually train yourself to look up to see what's in front of you right before you breathe -whether you notice it or not.
@academicjock
@academicjock 6 лет назад
@Charles Kornodorffer ... I cannot prove what does not exist. According to Dr. Ernest Maglischo's book, "Swimming Fastest" (page 131), considered the greatest overall book on the sport ever written and the bible of swimming for swim coaches, there is actually an advantage to breathing to one side as when the swimmer breathes every stroke cycle (stroke cycle = 1 left and 1 right hand), the ratio of breathing to stroke cycle is 1 : 1. If a swimmer breathes alternate sides then the ratio is 1 : 1.5. Therefore the swimmer, when alternate side breathing, is more poorly oxygenating their blood thus causing greater levels of lactic acid build and resulting in the early tightening of muscles, loss of stroke length and strength. You contend that bi-lateral breathing is better. Please provide research that substantiates your claim.
@charleskorndorffer
@charleskorndorffer 6 лет назад
But again, I must stress that your claim, warrant, and impact all do not have to do with the continual hours of training either bilateral or unilateral swimming - which is the time in which you should be breathing bilaterally. Your discussion and evidence are still focused around doing one activity once as fast as possible, not 10,000 hours of repetition.

I read the article and it is terrible and ... simply wrong. ALL of the points made by the article relate to poor coaching and all points in the article can, therefore, be overcome by better coaching. I also knew Jonty from when he coached at San Jose Aquatics - excellent guy. I remember him being the second person to break 50 seconds in the 100m free when he blew away the WR in the 100 with a 49.4. He's had an excellent career at Alabama as well as working with the US National Team. However, I'm not impressed by you knowing him. You being friends with an excellent age group coach vs my referencing the book written by a PhD in exercise physiology; a world recognized swimming scientist who's book catapulted him to also being recognized as the greatest expert in swimming on earth over the last 40 years; who ORGANIZES and speaks at ASCA coaching clinics; has been the director and keynote speaker at World Swim Coaches Association coaching clinics (just a few years ago in New Orleans as well as Dubai); who was, due to his expertise in exercise physiology, hired to advise the US rowing team; who lectures all over the world on recent physiological research (much of it his own) as well as his discovery regarding Bernoulli's principle of lift (you might just call it sculling) as the predominate propulsive force in swimming ... If I must make a choice, I'll go with the RESEARCH of the "winningest" coach in NCAA history as opposed to one age group coach's opinion or a terrible article. Telling me about your friend's opinion is not providing research.
