After being beloved pets and livestock for centuries, a smear campaign was launched against pigeons, calling them "diseased" and "rats with wings" (never mind the fact that tame rats are also very clean animals). Pigeons were then turned out onto the streets in droves, where they live to this day. Another facet of life that likely influenced Unfezant's development.
I also used one and, alongside my riolu, it DEMOLISHED the early game! I actually love Unfeazant, and I'll use one if I have an opportunity (except in competitive play)
I honestly think the female pidove line might be my all time favorite pokemon, I have grown extremely attached to them. My female pidove was on my team for my pokemon shield playthrough, and that team, and specifically that female unfezent grew on me so much, like i can't put it into words. These lovable birbs just mean so much to me
Not all pidgeons are rock doves. Many other columbids are also called pidgeons, such as the passanger pidgeon ( _Ectopistes_ ), the wonga pidgeon ( _Leucosarcia_ ) and the tooth-billed pidgeons ( _Didunculus_ which are dodo relatives).
The bird most think of when they think "pigeon" are a rock dove, yes, but there are other species of birds that are also called pigeons which are distinct from doves. The pigeon is actually the raven to the dove's crow, with bigger species being called pigeons while smaller species are called doves (except when they're feral, then they're called pigeons for some reason).
I agree with alot of the comments here, Pidove is my favorite regional bird. Its simple, fun, and lovable. Its easy on the eyes and it doesnt try to be something its not. I would argue there are many bland designs in pokemon, Pidove is definitly more bland than most highly beloved pokemon, but it does it in a way thats charming.
The so-called "boring" Pokemon do an excellent job of fleshing out Pokemon's biodiversity, as it were. Without a few dozen more mundane Pokemon, the truly bizarre ones wouldn't stand out as much. It's good to have some Pokemon that are just "regular animals, but anime" for people who actually like the design of real-world animals.
Because it's a common animal that pooped on them at least 1 time in their lives. Their projecting their negative experiences with pidgeons on a fictional bird
So here's a little fun fact: squab, aka pigeon, breast when prepared for cooking actually look like a heart. It makes for a popular dish to serve in upscale restaurants during Valentine's Day! Not sure if Game Freak knew about that little tidbit, but it definitely makes pidove's little heart chest a bit more gorey.
As someone who loves almost all of the Gen 5 Pokemon, including the "bad" ones (Unfezant, Garbodor and Vanniluxe), that last statement by Lockstin does touch my heart. Show Unfezant some love y'all!
There's a special place in my heart for Unfezant. In Gen 5 I managed to get both the male and female forms as shinies, without ever seeking them out. I like to imagine they're best friends. They may be in the box more often than not, but they're always right next to each other.
Allow me to shed more light on Pidove, because it's genuinely the most complex simple design ever conceived. The hearts aren't just a Japanese pun, they're also a reference to the role of doves, namely in marriage rites and how they're often called the birds of love. But the crest isn't even the only heart design! The closed wings are half of a cartoon heart each, and the pink nose thingy is also heart-shaped! And that's not even getting into the role doves have in mythos that symbolize a new beginning! See, in Christian mythos, a dove was sent out by Noah after the great flood to check to see if the land was viable to live on again. It came back with an olive branch (I think), and thus, it symbolizes a new beginning. Now, what is Unova? A soft reboot? Aka, A NEW BEGINNING?????? It also symbolizes peace and love, hence the tranquil and love theme in Tranquill and Pidove (because love is a reasonable inspiration for the name as well). Unfezant would then be unphased by unpleasantries (as denoted by how they adjust to their trainer, showing both being unphased if they're male and unpleasant for longer if they're female, but they both come around)! I truly believe that Pidove is the PERFECT simple Pokémon, and Tranquill and Unfezant are cool, you all are just mean. Also, Tranquill and Unfezant keep up with the heart shaped crests, heads, and wings, thus all tying in the love and peace theme together. I really like these Pokémon, and I'm tired of people pointlessly dunking on them.
Thanks for sharing. That's really cool I didn't even think about the heart design relating to how doves are seen culturally. Pidove is a really neat and underappreciated pokemon
Hi, I'm here to explain German Pokémon names. This time, of course, I'm focusing on the Pidove line. So, let's get started. First of all, Pidove. It's German name is "Dusselgurr" and it combines "Dussel", a word to describe someone who is silly or dumb, with "Gurr", which is the sound Pidgeons make. Next up, Tranquill's Name is "Navitaub", the Name consists of "Navigation" (the same as the English word navigation) and "Taube". "Taube" is the German Name for doves and pidgeons alike. Lastly, the German name for Unfezant is "Fasasnob" and it is a combination of "Fasan" and "Snob". The word "Fasan" translates to pheasant, while "Snob" is just snob. And that's it. As always, thanks for reading and a nice day to you all!
Guess I'll explain the French names now... "Poichigeon" is a portemanteau of "pigeon", hopefully a translation isn't needed, and "pois chiche", literally, "chickpea", but that can also designate something small and something stupid, like if the brain had the size of a chickpea. That's not very nice. "Colombeau" is a portemanteau of "colombe" which means "dove" and "beau" which means "beautiful" and other things like that. Probably not a reference to Colombo though the ressemblance is funny. "Déflaisan" is litterally the same as in English, "déplaisant" means unpleasant and "faisan" means "pheasant".
I actually really like the Pidove line. Pidove is probably one of the cutest pokemon birds, and Male Unfezant looks really good. A shame that gamefreak didn't make the line any useful.
My oldest pokémon is actually a female Unfezant that I caught in 2011, I named her Victory at the time, and she's in a timer ball. I still have Victory and she's in pokemon home atm. I'm really fond of the Unfezant line and it holds a special place in my heart.
You know what makes that sad story of Unfezant even sadder? Ash actually DOSE ditch his Unfezant at the end of the Back and White series. Like not even a week after coming home to Kanto from Unova and Ash is off to Kalos leaving that poor bird like dust in the wind.
I mean, both ash & unfezant deserve better mostly because of bad writing or the showrunners did not know what the hell they doing! or even know any better!!
Funnily enough Unfezant is my favorite regional bird. Just something about the masquerade mask on the male version just appeals to me. I do wish they had done a bit more with the female version though.
@@TornaitSuperBird While that's true, that doesn't mean it's a good design. Realism isn't always appealing to the eye (stares at Live Action Lion King and Little Mermaid).
Maybe not for everybody, but the realiseme with the unfezant line with the female being blainer do to how it is often in with real birds, is what makes me like the unfezant.
I have a soft spot for this creature since irl, me and my mom used to raise, own, care for pigeons and doves. We don't anymore because our neighbor said it was a problem and ordered us to get rid of them. But we still raise abandoned birbs, and our last ones were Sai and Avy. Sai ended up making it while Avy sadly passed. It's been 3 years since we released him, but you can still hear his human scream.
I used an Unfezant on my first play through of white, and while playing i found my first random encounter shiny, a shiny tranquil. So i used it as well. I have so many fond memories with this line. It's tied for my 3rd favorite regional bird.
I actually like Unfezant thanks to it's sexual dimorphism. Both back when Black & White were released to now I felt it gave them and the Pidove line more flare and uniqueness compared to the other regional birds, even those who had minor sexual dimorphism. Honestly thanks to that it's one of my favorite regional birds, not my top favorite, but one of them.
I like Unfezant c: Also another fun fact about birds: most of them are tetrachromatic, meaning they see all colors like us AND ultraviolet colors. It's determined that the 'plain' looking females actually look quite colorful and bright for other birds.
melanistic ringneck pheasants look like Unfezant. Their entire body has the green blue of their head. To get an idea for the mask on the male Unfezant look at the tragopan. They actually have fleshy horns that they can inflate as a mating display. They also have a fleshy bib that goes in front of them and extends out of their neck like a shield and it totally needs to be a pokemon. Lol the actual pheasants really do kind of sound like with the anime sounds like😂 I have a pair of Pheasants and we of course call them Unfezant. And we have a family of pigeons nesting under our solar panels on our roof. They have had clutches so far and keep using the spot.
I've actually always adored Unfezant. Sure it may not be very good, but that never mattered to me. Unfezant was actually the Pokemon that taught me that the Pokemon didn't have to be cool in order for me to connect with and enjoy having it around. It may be a lackluster regional bird to most, but to me, it will always be my second favorite.
Google will often pay to have data storage devices trucked across the country, because it’s faster than the internet It’s all about how much data you need to send, the more data, the longer it takes to download, but a truck takes the same amount of time regardless of it’s hauling a floppy disc or a 100 terabyte hard drive
Honestly, Pidove and it's whole evolution line are my favorite regional birds. They just seem like friendly buddies and it's easy to imagine just chilling with them if pokemon were real
I can say that Unfezant is definitely my favorite regional bird. That mask is just so cool, and the charm it has. I hope i will forever love my dear Tuxedo Mask.
I used Pidove and its evolutions in a PokeMMO playthrough with my mates and it was a valued member of my team for a good portion of the game (up until the 6th or 7th gym I believe) because it was an absolute menace against my mates I was playing with, who are much more invested in competitive than I am. Also I never understood the Unfezant hate, but I did start with Black and White, so I may be overly nostalgic to the line. Also I think pigeons are hilarious and would defend them against anyone who hated on them
Unfezant is actually my third favorite regional bird! I've always had such a soft spot for pigeons so the line was a must to have, and nothing captures the pure joy like the Pidove line. I've never used many competitive mons anyways, so I'm happy to pull it into my team!
I love this line so much!!! Pigeons are my favorite. Pidove is so cute! Tranquil is also adorable! And unfeazant is so pretty! I had one on my Pokémon black playthrough his name was rocky and him and my serviper gold defeated the elite four together.
for my Netherlands inspired region i also included a rock pigeon based Pokémon but as a 2nd stage Pokémon (first is based on a house sparrow & third based on a grey heron)
Ive always like pidove cause its cute but I only started to like Unfezent when in a nuzlocke of black 2 with the combo of feather dance and roost it took down Iris's Haxorus by itself
Fun fact about Pidove. As someone who has seen wild dove and pigeon populations they are almost indistinguishable. Its doves breed for shows and all white bodies that are not seen in wild too often.
A thing to note about Tranquill's name is that as you were saying about it being peaceful and nice, its name is very close to "Tranquilo" which's peaceful in Portuguese (and possibly something similar in Spanish?) so just another interesting add-on to that
This is my favourite regional-bird line. Pidove was the first Gen V Pokemon I ever saw, via a plush of all things, and I remember loving Ash's Unfezant in the anime. Unfortunately it isn't great in battle, it has a terrible move-pool, but I've used it a few times, heck I once did a run of Sword with two Unfezant, one male one female, and a Pidove
Before Computer Guided Missile Tech came about, in WW2, the US military had a project training pigeons to guide missiles. They were trained to line up an image of the intended target on the translucent front of the missile where they were placed with the actual target by pecking controls to move the missile up down left or right. During training, they got corn as a reward for correctly placed pecks. It worked so well that the US military almost deployed them before the advent of Computer Guided Missile tech.
i didn't realize people actually hated unfezant it never really stood out to me as insanely cool but i definitely wouldn't count it anywhere near my least favorite mons and pidove is just plain cute
It may not be the most unique Pokemon, but a pidove was the second mon i ever caught.i will always love Unfezant. It's dependable and got me through my first playthrough of a pokemon game.
I'm probably one of few people who actually loves the Pidove line. Sure it's pretty ordinary-looking but that ironically is what makes it stand out to me.
The male design of Unfezant is the stronger of the two, and I really like it as a regional bird. It's also got that great ability of Super Luck and you can pair it with a scope lens for increased critical hits, so I'd say it does have some battle prowess!
I love all bird pokemon. I have always used every regional bird pokemon on my team from beginning to end and that includes the pidove line. The pokemon is cute, it's simple, and birds don't have to be striking with color to be beautiful. Even the most mute color birds have beauty and elegance to them than any bird of paradise could ever have.
rock pigeon could also be called that because of their "rocking" walking movement. and their fearlessness is pretty metal imo. they just come walking at people, one head wiggle at a time, and just eat right from a human hand. city pigeons are so used to people
Joke's on you! Unfezant is my favorite regional bird and taught me the viability of a good stab priority attack. Got the gosh-dang thing up to level 100 when I originally played Black version! Unfezant is lovely.
A shiny pidove is one of the first pokemon I saw in sword. I was playing a blind nuzlocke and I got a shiny when I first reached the wild area. It has a special place in my heart for it.
honestly I thought the "so sad" bit was gonna lead up to the fact that pidgeons are still very much domesticated birds, just basically homeless because people don't want them/keep them as pets anymore
I used an Unpheasant in my shield team, and I loved him. His name was mapej because I was fairly young and had no creativity, there are still happy unpheasants out there
Truth be told, I have a lot of attachment to this line, it was my very first and second full odds shiny as a kid, practically back to back. Competitive viability be damned, I play to make memories and those two were a very special one to me.
There is a saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For me, the Unfezants are not ugly, they are harmonious and serene and perhaps something majestic and cunning as well. Like a pheasant.
I for myself like unfezant(only the male tho) I used one in a nuzlocke, called flattermann, German for flappy man, and it redeemed itself quite well, even tanking if it needed. I'm proud to say that I could raise a pidove when Noone else wanted one.
I used to live in the suburbs, Ventura County. I've seen pidgeons more there than here in LA but I don't get out much anymore so maybe it's just me. 5:42 I have seen the occasional small hawk by where I live though and there's plenty of outdoor and stray cats too.
The thumbnail is the most threatening thumbnail I’ve seen for a Pokemon video Edit: also thanks for guilt tripping me into playing Pokemon White 2. I planned on using a Unfeazant in that game but haven’t gotten around to playing it. Maybe I should since I’m still waiting for a replacement 3DS so I can replay gen 6 and 7
I think it is my bias from watching the unova anime first as a child but I have always had a love for pidove and unfezant, I know most people think it's ugly but I love this lil' guy and I also kind of really like the female form as well
I grew up watching the pokemon anime and gen 5 was my favorite. I found Pidove really cute and event thought the male design of Unfeazent was kinda cool. sure I prefer other birds like Talonflame over it but Its still cool.
Recently used one in shield playthrough cuz I’ve never used one and other than it learning more special moves physical while being a physical attacker, I quite enjoyed using it.
Fun fact: Rodent glue traps are strong enough to trap a pigeon. Source: I had to remove a dead pigeon that started decomposing from under one of our fridges at my workplace. the smell was "unplezant"
It might be because I'm a New Yorker, but the fact that Pidove looks like every goddamn pigeon I have ever seen actually made me really like it. PIDOVE SUPREMACY! (Though my Gen 1 heart will always love Pidgey the most)
They assigned the speed and endurance part to unpheasent due to the really easy to find out fact that the bird that is the most famous for it’s over the top display, the peacock, is a type of pheasent
Unfezant was for the longest time my favourite regional bird, actually. It held that position until SV introduced Kilowattrel, as I love frigate birds. I feel like most of the "hate" the Pidove line gets as the "worst" regional bird is just "gen 5 bad" leaking over.
I got a new job in Castelia City, but I quit after a week. The hours were awful, I smelled like Pokémon when I came home, and I kept finding feathers everywhere. The job was plucking Unfezant.
The name "hato" is funny because in brazil we sometimes refer to pidgeons as "ratos voadores" which would mean flying rats. The catch is that rato and hato have the exact same pronounciation.
Shout out to John Feathers, the Pidove I used in my Pokémon Black playthrough. Evolved all the way to Unfezant *and* in the Hall of Fame with my Champion team.
Havent watched the video yet, but wanted to know more about the Pidove line since I found a shiny female Pidove in my Black playthrough, so wanted to see if I can salvage something from this very plain bird
Ironically enough, Unfezant was the only regional bird I liked keeping on a team long term, even to the elite 4. I tend to have a thing against bird pokemon, but Unfezant and Toucannon are the exceptions.
