this was the first evo i watched, it was early in the morning right after i had gotten out of work, i was betting on this match on salty bets with 1:5 odds, when snake eyez won i converted to learning grapplers that very day, this set is the REASON i play street fighter.

Here's another tidbit I remember from the time - as certain points in the match when Snake Eyez is kind of rocking back and forth, that's him both maintaing spacing and repeatedly inputting half circles back and forward, so he can command grab on reaction. Insane stuff and great video.

As a Zangief player myself, there's a little important tip I could add myself. I'll break it down with the exact timing: - An important grappler tip, is to not always rely on grab, but use the fear of grabs to catch your opponent trying to escape. See also Alex Valle vs Bonchan. - At 7:55, SnakeEyez has cornered Xian, who jumped in fear of the grab. SnakeEyez hit him with a flying headbutt; this was on reaction, notice he did it a split second after Xian jumped. - Getting hit by flying headbutt is actually very dangerous, because it did 600 stun (this is a shoutout to a SF2 bug). 2 Headbutts will stun ANY character, which put the fear of death in Xian. - If Xian jumped again he would've been stunned/dead. He could also dodged with backdash, but backdashing in the corner is very risky because it's doesn't build distance, leading to an obvious punish. - Xian also could've done nothing, but if SnakeEyez saw that hesitation, he would've used a SPD. - At 7:57 Xian kinda took the cowardly way by using an immediate Ultra ("Reversal"). This was actually very unreliable, because most players only get hit by random Ultra if they went too committed with an active move. But still, he didn't expect it to get, he just wanted to run the clock like Round 1. - Unfortunately he miscalculated the time left, and paid the price. But still, he might not have made this mistake if he wasn't put in such a sudden moment of risk. Side note: I did get to play Xian in a casual in the same year, and did fluke a lucky win (was 1-3 LOL). He did admit for the rest of that year, SnakeEyez was a bit of a mental demon for him.

Another interesting video would have been Luffy. He actually won this evo and did so 1. barely ever competing in the USA, 2. Using a character no one was even getting “good” results with, 3. played with a PS1 controller and 4. Became the first European to win evo. Luffy was almost unbeatable around this time and xian was one of the few who could consistently beat him whereas snake eyes had never beaten luffy, (to my knowledge) and was eliminated by him in this tournament.
@gv1038
@gv1038 Год назад
Xian can be quite an interesting subject too as he's the "average" player who got good and then won Evo on SF4 in a period dominated by japanese players. His environment wasn't the best (singapore is actually strongly against video games) but he became a champion... Because of his love for the game.
