To be fair, their animation budget used to be abysmal. It didn’t help that the voice acting and writing were garbo. But if I were still a kid I would 100% be into whatever I just watched
they had to downgrade the animation after xy and especially xyz cus it killed their budget and the time crunch was getting much worse. This is one of the few examples I can think of in the recent pokemon anime outside obvious stuff like ash vs leon where the animation gets close to xyz levels.
Pokemon is one of the few shows that I don't feel like needs "good animation". What matters more is the actual choreography of the fight, which it's uh...mostly done well when it needed to be serious.
Certainly better than them looking like they used stock footage on a bunch of episodes especially by cutting away the actual backdrop for a fancy graphics one like they are trying to make it look more amazing with an attack that is literally just quick attack or razor leaf or even razor blade by sprouting absurdly large energy blade limbs. Never the less, I would rather more fights where a single move can be done in more creative actions then basic slash attack, basic charg’ing’ headlong attack, basic punch attack, basic energy ball or beam attack and more. Certainly just brings up one want to flaunt that gen 1-3’ness when the anime felt like it fit with its age, then look horribly bad and clearly had Ash on some ridiculous drugs to keep forgetting how to fight, asking the same questions and be an ‘eternal 10’year old who changed appearances due to animation differences (sun/moon arc especially) and many more gags that make you think Pokémon ‘anime’ works better when it’s shorts then actual full blown episodes.
My point is more towards the `Brock/partner` exposition moments and constantly reading dex entries. Maybe the Dubs made it seem more silly. But im very sure Satoshi/Ash had the same bug as Goku got when they went from Z to Super. Even if you exclude the dubs trying to make him seem like an ally of justice, he kind of went from a tactical `smart on the battlefield dood, to a retard who despite already had two kids, still was too dumb enough to know what sexual intercourse, as if his wife didnt even attempt to get him a basic education on many things. Which i would love if we 100% got actual episodes where Goku actually doing Taxes like that one fan-comic, which could be a perfect symbol of the character is clearly smart, he just doesnt like to `be` smart all the time and rather be happy go lucky. Granted, maybe im just enjoying more imperfect characters in fun ways that clearly has no care of definitions of Good/Evil`, they will clothsline princesses in video games, once they get an opp then continue to suffer the shite they put them thru. Moral of the story: Sunraku from Shangri-la Frontier is what i consider a fun character, who doesnt need to go thru a giant development block of multiple seasons. The guy basically is a gamer who plays garbage games and dealing with such b.s. gave him a knack for dealing with crazy systems, so soon as the story dropped him in a `god like game` like its sword art online, except less stupid, he clearly has a good `backstory` to justify him being better then a bunch of other players who just stand around and tank attacks or something. Man i got too much of a annoyance against games/shows these days that are more TALK then WALK about a character, even worst when the WALK they actually do is effectively the same damn thing for the most part even in a entirely different show from the same IP.@@DakotaWilson-uv5um
@@BladeSerph This. More intense choreography has never been Pokémon's focus, but I would love for an official animation that's a lot more Pokken like in choreography. Something akin to DBX's Lucario vs. Blaziken fight would go crazy
Agreed especially in the games, cause if i had to reference older games, i would kind of adore more stuff like how legends arceus had wild pokemon act where yeah, they can punch your shite in and likely Dark souls you out of losing precious items. Hell look up Jade cocoon 2 which was also a monster raising & fusing system but unlike the more popular IPs back in the playstation 2 era of gaming, it had fun systems like a RING combat system where you arranged multiple teams centered around 4 different elements that you would rotate for certain usages and more like elemental advantages, gimmick specific teams like buffs/debuffs & heals and more. A good `serious` play to that was making sure to have a sturdy frontline on each specific ring, cause if that ends up falling then like a yugioh TCG, you could be attacked directly, causing you to lose `shields` and could result in you getting taken out before the rest of your party went down. Its just that sweet fun when the lose or even win condition is more then just total military force destruction of the opposing party. Which even some other games i cant remember off the top of my head did a fun way to flaunt it like making the enemies get so scared of you being high level in combat, likely from one-shotting one of thar posse, they get stunned a turn or more or attempt to `start fleeing` and will run away if not taken out before the start of your next turn.@@SnowEspeon
@@ProximamonEldiosDigimon I wouldn't say bad exactly but yeah it's fairly average. They could have done a lot more with the choreography, plus terastalisation is (visually) the dumbest generational gimmick, and it's hard to have pokemon realistically fighting with a big dumb crystal hat on.
@@webbedshadow2601 Ruby was where I first tried Dusclops and I was impressed by it. Being so bulky and then burning an opponent was great and made short work of Steven's Metagross.
For someone who has just finished all of pokemon journeys and the final battle against ash and leon, i really completely ENTIRELY beg to differ Edit: I think I got people a liiiiitle too confused of this comment, I meant I disagree about the fact people say "the Pokemon anime has bad animation", the animation from I guess the start of the series leading up to B/W was pretty doodoo garbage in my opinion (sry to those B/W fans), but then came XYZ were it got insanely beautiful looking battle and all. And then came journeys where most battles looked exceedingly better tenfold, including Ash vs Leon.
What about Leon Vs Diantha? A literal slide show? Or part 2 of Ash Vs Leon where they just reused the vine animations from the gorillas vines on dragonite? Literally every episode (except for the last one) had slow choppy reused animations. They see one great bit of animation (I'll admit the final episode was animated beautifully) and igore literally every other episode in the entire arc. I wish they gave Ash's final battles this level of care in regards to animation, instead of rushing everything and delaying every two weeks.
I mean, as far as weekly anime go, Pokémon is honestly not bad. And the studio behind the anime, OLM, can make some beautiful animation. But, when it comes to weekly shows, sometimes quality is left to the side.
@@xynium.Exactly, and only 1997 adaptation of berserk is considered true and accurate adaptation (because that time they didn't had cgi and digital art style so color and animation was more vibrant and beautiful). In my perspective OLM is goated studio as they are quite professional and old in their business, they have experience of doing animation of Anime which are exceptionally hard to draw. But still somehow they don't care about Pokemon that much (just look at Pokemon journeys 80% battle in the series was underwhelming and rushed).
@@Jake.The.Beaverthat isn't rushing, that's just how it works. Besides the animes takes quite a couple of breaks anyways, which is quite rare for anime
Sun and Moon personally was where the series animation peaked. A lot of the battles were effortlessly smooth in their execution such as Ash’s battle with Misty and Kukui. The Pokemon in that series just has so much life in them and the attacks feel like they have an actual impact whenever they hit.
My problem with the OG anime was, back before gen 6 they had little to no choreography, and the choreography that was there was heavily explained and slowed the pace of the battles.
Tetsuo Yajima Is amazing director when come to fighting scene, he also action director for XYZ Also look at how fast that dusknoir is even without Trick Room
That’s what I mean. People can never be happy about anything it’s like think back at the seven deadly sins animations for the last few seasons. What about that Naruto movie with Naruto versus battle lol what about one piece of animations if anybody’s gonna poke shit poke shit other shit
Horizon is great, you can't compare it to other Pokemon series cuz i think its on it's own category, other Pokemon series revolves around ash's journey to become the Champion (or Pokemon master but he didn't catch all Pokemons) and horizon is about the in depth world building with new characters and fresh new plot. We need to accept that the Pokemon series is over, and just like the name this new Pokemon series is a new horizon.
I am not seeing the "bad animation" here? Sure it isn't the high end of animation, but it was choreographed well enough to showcase the flow of action as well as show how the trainers broke that flow by issuing new commands. Also it caught the energy of the moments very well, so if I were mildly anticipating this fight beforehand, I would be hyped to see the winners next fight against a main character
I have never heard someone say Pokemon has bad animation. Some of the stuff I've seen out of context is straight up OD for what was a children's cartoon to me.
Journeys respected most of the logic of the competitive games, Speed stats, Turns basis attacks, stat boosts, priority moves, abilities and hidden abilities, move effects like Flinching, status moves, Hazards, screens, and Hazard removal. I prefer it that way specifically on Journeys because Ash is battling on the highest level. But it’s not appealing to the Casual watchers because they have a lot to absorb to understand what’s happening.
Horizons is really doing its best to show that the Pokemon anime can be as good as any other series. The plot, the characters and the animation are amazing so far
yeah if you ignore roy the show has potential but he steals so much from lico abd super annoying all the time. imo if he leaves theshow will be great after lico gets some developments. like you is such a bad character that he is taking other characters screen time imo
@@zaleww5824like bruh he's keep yapping about "rayquaza rayquaza" my lord we get it, it's came from your pokeball so you want it return the ancient pokeball My boy roy keep forgetting he's have fuecoco and wattrel but still weak to fight rayquaza
I wouldn’t say the animation is bad I mean Horizon’s animation is still better than Seven deadly sins season 3 animation and the infamous Naruto Shippuuden Pain vs Six Tailed Naruto fight.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate. The team that made Guilty Crown took up X&Y and really changed the game of what was once considered standard for the show. They broke the mold and once the anime switched animation programs for Sun and Moon, the bar was topped again by a different team learning the tech. And again in Journeys as another perfected the new tools. And now, another team approaches Horizons with newfound skill. X&Y walked so Sun&Moon could run, Sun&Moon ran so Journeys could fly, and Journeys flew so Horizons could soar.
eeeeeeeeeeeh wouldn't say Journyes flew. It had a few good fights but the animation was legitimately bad for the most part. Even major things like the Ash vs Cynthia finale was stiff as hell
@@bigbangpegasusmasterEpisode 3 wasn't bad of journeys it's just there were no need of battles or fights (the episode 3 of journeys barely had any fight and the fight against team rocket is always handled not so much great in every series) so how could you say it was bad even before covid also when actual battles started getting its way into journeys then covid started (and we've all know how horrible the animation went after that). but still it was a miracle for us that we were able to see a glimpse of good animation in episode 25 of journeys. then the next time we had good animation was episode 45(or the whole darkest day arc). after than the show went down hill and there was nothing which could save it. only after covid ended we see Ash vs leon (which was the best fight in the whole anime till this point).
@@Blastoise101 These villains here are kinda what you’re describing. They’re not really a team, just a bunch of goons being thrown at the heroes and that are easy to defeat
I don't think all the evil teams need to be threats, but to be fair ever since gen 7 they have been going with simpler "villians", not that it's bad but they probably should go back to actual evil teams soon
@@Gebirges The cinematography on that one is miles superior as well. It was nearly perfect. Here, there’s a bunch of awkward freeze frames. Don’t know why people use this as an example over the previous episode.
The Pokémon anime has always had its moments of amazing animation but it’s far and few in between I feel like we peaked during X and Y in every single aspect although a lot of the recent seasons have had a lot of great animation during some battles if only the artstyle was polished as it used to be never been a fan of the rounded out features in the later seasons after X and why
Gen 6 onward is when the animation properly stepped up. Though earlier series still got some good battles with choreography, and might be nostalgia but i still enjoy ash vs paul at lake acuity more than many of the battles in journeys regardless of animation. Though actual specific battle animation and not re use of attack animation with generic effect backgrounds is so nice. Honestly, and i havent seen many alola anime battles, i think XY had a good mix of animation and choreography, largely thinking if how froakie's bubbles were used and greninja skating in the 8th gym battle.
The only thing I hate about this sequence is, dusknoir should have taraformed into a dark type to gain STAB on dark type moves and have resistance against psycho cutter and ghost type moves
Tbh this animation is on that level and that’s not a overestimate also that was near the end of xy when the pokemon anime is near the end the animation it great so this me anime is quite promising
The anime always had good animation. They reused cuts a lot (particularly whenever someone commanded a Pokemon to use a move repeatedly), but the actual animation was consistently fluid to downright spectacular.
In general (the majority of the time), the anime series animation is below average to bad. The best animations are: *_1. The final Ash's Pikachu vs Leon's Charizard._* *_2. The tournament with Ash's Greninja vs Alain's Mega Charizard / Sawyer's Mega Sceptile (X & Y)_* *_3. Brock's Mega Steelix vs Kiawei's Turtonator (Sun & Moon)_* *_4. Misty's Mega Gyarados vs Ash's Pikachu (Sun & Moon)_*
The animation quality peaked at XY&Z, I think. They really put extra effort to animate each battle sequences there, even got a behind the scene special for that. Since Sun & Moon, the quality has continued to decrease, due to the strained stress on the animators. 🤷🏻♂️ Also, they seemed to rely more on the cheaper Southeast Asia division (Philippines, if I'm not mistaken). And the quality was arguably lower than the Japanese division, who went on to focus on the movies instead.
you don't understand animation theory that's why you said SM was a decrease in quality from XYZ, critics (who unlike you, actually understands what they're talking about) says that Pokemon Sun&Moon is one of the best anime in 2017 in terms of animation quality and technique used. Since you are CLEARLY don't have the knowledge on this topic, go watch the canipa effect video where he breakdown sun&moon animation ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0Bp1f88_LWg.htmlsi=Dc3l1s9Xty3JZyhc
BrokenSoul the animation in Sun and Moon was really better than xyz.Maybe from what you are reffering if the art style (that is more complex but has more static animation) that in SM permett to have a more fluid and dinamic animation
@@miruz3519 sm has good animation but saying it has the best animation from 2017 it's lying sm was more fluid in terms of animation than previous anipoke series that's a fact but no more than that there are plenty of animes in that year and before better in animation than sm anime.
XY was the last good anipoke series sm jn and now hz are garbage in terms of plot and after sm in animation too there's no reason to keep watching pokemon anime except from big very good and reliable projects like WIT studio mini series like hisuian snow or paldean winds for example and yeah the few talented people animators scriptwriters directors storyboarders etc left pokemon anime or even OLM studios to not being stuck in that nepotistic workplace and keep growing on other promising projects in other studios or even founding their own ones.
Yes well try it out and see if you like it. If you have seen the old ashime then this isn’t for you, but if this your first, then you might like it. It’s new and different but very (like verrrrrrry) controversial among the fandom. 😅
Reminds me of megaman nt warrior animation (i think that was what it was called, the one with Lan the mc and megaman was like an ai pocket device, netnavi I think they called them)
For me this is just way better cause i kinda realized that in journeys the pokemon can only take 1 or 2 hits and it faints and that was really boring Ash vs Leon was the one battle i liked specificly Pikachu vs Charizard
so we just gonna forget dragonite vs charizard Ash Greninja vs Mega zard X Ash greninja vs Mega gardivoir that entier scene with mega rayquaza and deyoxis
@@AI-DreigonGPT i watched the full episode. It used Phantom force, bitter blade and Psycho cut. But ppl are just assuming shit based on this one short clip
