It really bothers me when my old favorites are mistaken for newer songs b/c they've been 'sampled' - In my opinion it's not a talent to use pieces of other group's/individual's songs & re-mix them, especially without permission or giving credit due to the original artist - It's not an introduction to older music - The younger crowd does not realize that this is the case b/c they're hearing it for the first time in a re-mix -They don't know that it's not an original work, who sang it first or who wrote it
I feel the same way about Linda Reinstate when she did Ooh Baby Baby. Smokey Robinson wrote the song and He and his group the Miracles recorded it and performed it live. She did;not do it justice as far as Im concerned although it was a big hit for her. Michel Jackson did another Smokey Robinson song, Who's Loving you. I like both versions, but Michael Jackson s version is the one most people are familiar with. Smokey Robinson wrote a lot of big hits for Motown including My Girl recorded by the temptations
Yes, P. Diddy sampled it but without Sting's permission. 🙄 He pays Sting $2,000 dollars a day per their settlement. 🤦♀️ It's the most beautiful stalker song ever. 🤣 The Police is one of my favorite bands of all time. ❤ Although they were only together around 9 years - their catalog is absolutely amazing! 🔥 🔥"Roxanne" 🔥"Don't Stand So Close To Me" "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" "Message In A Bottle" "Can't Stand Losing You"
I could talk forever about The Police and Sting (lead singer) but I'm NOT going to! lol!! I'll just say you NEED to do.... "Roxanne". "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic", "Don't Stand So Close To Me".... all are fire and fun/"interesting"! ;) ;)
When P Diddy released "I'll be missing you" people already know it was the Police's "Every Breath You Take" because the song also popular in US. The original song was no. 1 in US Billboard Hot 100 for 8 weeks and also no.1 in US Billboard Top Tracks for 9 weeks in 1983.
It is the most played song on the radio to date- and the biggest single of 1980s. It also sold over 8 million units becoming one of the biggest selling singles of all time.
Their song “don’t stand so close to me” is also a bit weird lyrically lol people will say it’s from the students perspective, but still, would never be allowed today
As a drummer, the term double bass (as it pertains to bass) confused me lol The "bass" part I understood, but I wasn't exactly sure what the "double" referred to 😄
No. This is The Police. You're thinking I'll be missing you. That song was a tribute to B.I.G. This song is about a stalker. It's not exactly the kind of song you want to sample for a tribute song.😂
When this song came out they played it like crazy on MTV and a soap opera i watched played it as background music way too much lol If you want to review other police songs there is "Don't stand so close to me", "Message in a bottle", "roxanne", "every little thing she does is magic", "synchronicity", "De do do", "king of pain", or "walking on the moon"
I read that Sting was mystified when fans would inform him that they played this one at their wedding or as their first dance or whatever... it is about stalking the person who jilted you.
You had me with the title. My sister was held by her fiance for 3 days, and he played this song to her over and over. Creepy as fuck. She left him when she got out of his place. 😬
Yep, a lot of stolen music from rappers and R&B music. Usher strait up stole one of his first big songs from Tupac after his death. The funny thing is the vanilla ice/queen lawsuit was going on at the time.
Inspiring stalkers since 1983 🤪, when Biggie was 11 years old. Also, I find you just hilarious. 😆 edit: For more fun with The Police; "Roxanne" "Message In a Bottle" " Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" "Don't Stand So Close to Me" "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" for starters... all 👍
Nah man! This song belongs to The Police and The Police alone!!! Other great songs from The Police are .... 'Everything She Does Is Magic, Do Do Do Da Da Da, Roxanne, Message In The Bottle, Wrap Around Your Finger, Don't Stand So Close To Me!!'
Because alot of times people don't really listen to the lyrics. Take the song More than words from Extreme. It's actually about getting oral sex from a woman. Lol
It’s because all stalkers have a romantic ideal of the person they are stalking. Sting had a stalker at the time, his performance is expressive and painful. Writing this song was his way of taking back control of the situation in a cathartic way. 🎙
When P. Diddy performed "I'll be missing you" on an MTV awards show w/ Faith Evans as a tribute to Biggie, Sting (real name Gordon Sumner) of The Police, who wrote & sang "Every breath you take" shared the stage w/ them. Sting said it was dark song about obsession, w/ themes related to Soviet government surveillance of people in the cold war era. The Police were short-lived, formed as a punk rock band in the 70's, but progressing into new wave pop. They disbanded after 1985 at the peak of their popularity... Sting has had a massive solo career since then... The Police classics: "Roxanne" ... 'Message in a bottle' ... "I can't stand losing you" ... 'Wrapped around your finger' ... 'Every little thing she does is magic' ... 🔥🔥🔥 Sting solo songs: 'If I ever lose my faith in you' ... 'Desert rose' ... 'Englishman in New York' ... 'Russians'
Van, you hit the nail on the head when you said it was stalker-ish. A couple lines of those lyrics give it away "every smile you FAKE" & "every VOW you BREAK" for example. It has been misinterpreted for years, but then again, I am a big believer in being open to letting people have their own interpretations. Doesn't & shouldn't ruin anyone's enjoyment! 👍👍👍
Taking someone else's work without permission and selling it is theft. , regardless of how you might "make it your own". 😉 I bet Diddy asks for permission beforehand, from now on.
NOOOOO! IT is blooming well NOT! Listen to ORIGINAL, REAL music, educate yourself! Get to the original; only the folks who can't copy and steal! BTW it is a British group, whose singer, Sting, a former teacher was going through a divorce!
He’s playing a double bass, or upright bass. That low, thumping sound. Cellos are played while seated with a bow. Violins are only the small handheld instruments, aka fiddle.
Dude what year is it bruh... I was about to down vote bro.. U didn't know???? Oh my. G. But your appreciation is cool at least, geez I can't turn on the radio without hearing this song...🥵
Michael Franti & Spearhead did a monster cover of "Roxanne" by Sting and the Police for the Good Burger soundtrack. Such a great song and their cover did something different for it without ruining the original meaning.
It's called an upright bass. Originally from classical music but check out early jazz and it's all up in there. Before they made electric basses that's what was used. Still used sometimes like here for it's unique tone.
You may want to check out more of The Police, their drummer is highly regarded (and I know you like drums). I recommend starting with some of their early stuff such as "Message In A Bottle" or "Don't Stand So Close To Me.
Just for future reference.. everything today comes from music of the past .. and Hip hop steals these songs and put in their own spin on it. Most artist do this sampling horribly bad. However the “ I’ll be missing you “ version is great. But ya, they all get samples from previous artists of all kinds.
This song was written by Sting of the British new wave soft rock band The Police. It was released in 1983 on the Synchronicity album. It is thought to be a romantic song but in reality it was about stalking a former girlfriend. I listened to what you said about Diddy, rap and hip hop. So those genres are based on stealing original music and giving it a new spin. I think that’s an unfair generalization. Early old school rap was pretty cool and original. That might be what they do today but old school? There may have been some of that but not as widespread as today. IMHO
I’m so glad you reacted to this song! I discovered the Police in high school. Back when layaway at music stores was a thing, I paid off their master collection “Message In A Box” which included all of their recordings, even the b-sides from singles. It turned into my “stranded island” music collection (meaning I have one choice to bring with me). It’s so rich, and they had so much experimentation vetoing their hit singles. I’d love to see your reaction to their song “I Can’t Stand Losing You” vs. “Somebody I Used To Know” by Gotye. As other commenters have mentioned, “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” would be a good one. That could be fun. As always, thanks for doing what you do.
🇨🇦 61YO Sting is a living legend Time to dig that rabbit hole 1 Desert Rose 2 Field of Gold 3 Fragile 4 Russian..... 5 ..... And is such a performer live A accomplish musician Keep the good work VAN ✌
That was almost as much fun as watching you realize that Whitney remade I Will Always Love You. 😂 P Diddys version always gets me in my feelings. He did it justice and a beautiful tribute to Biggie.
This is the original song by The Police from 1983. And it's legend! P Diddy made a great cover as well, about 14 years later. Both versions are great, I think.
Oh yes, I have actually sung along with this song since my teenage years and about halfway through the time period of today I was thinking, This is a stalker song! It took me a minute (several years) to arrive at that conclusion, before I was like this is a love song! Now it is love song turned stalker song? 😂 She left you because you were a creepy dude watching her all of the time! 😂 ❤️
I grew up with this song so much, especially because I learned it from my parents. They love to put music so loud in the house, even my mom. This reminds me of Death Note,an anime.
Great reaction man! this is one of my favorite songs of all time. The stalker vibe was intentional, it's a song about a stalker disguised as a love song. Sting (the singer of The Police) said it himself.
I mean I can draw circles on my tummy with my right hand and tap the top of my head with the left at once but that's about it :P Musicians that can sing and play another instrument at the same time.. Yeah multi- taskers extraordinair!
Your worst reaction😡 every how could you say the police knew diddy and imply that the police copy Diddy song. You need to do a remake reaction and give the band THE POLICE AN APOLOGY 🤨. YOU SUPPORT P DIDDY PIRATE THIS SONG FROM THE POLICE 😮
This is a great old school song.. awesome videos man I been watching for about a couple weeks. I think I may do my first music reaction video. BTW I hit that THING!! Lol
P Diddy was jumping down from newspaper to the floor when the song was composed and published. Typical reaction. Some call it sampling. I prefer plagiarism. P Diddy's "hit" WOULDN'T exist if not "Every Breath You Take "
Remember Eddie Murphy singing Roxanne in 48 Hours? That's the Police. Check out Message In A Bottle, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Don't Stand So Close To Me, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, King Of Pain, Synchronicity, Can't Stand Losing You
Considering this song was released in 1983, and P. Diddy (or Puff Daddy as he was formerly known as) made his ‘version’ in 1997, I’d say it’s VERY unlikely that The Police stole the song from Diddy🤦🏻♀️ I mean, it was recorded 14 years earlier🤦🏻♀️ *smh*
Written by Sting. Produced by Hugh Padghem + The Police. Backing vocals by The Police. Guitar + piano by Andy Summers. Lead vocals, bass guitar + synth by Sting. Drums + percussion by Stewart Copeland. In 1982 - 1983, The Police, Spandau Ballet + George Martin recorded their albums near each other in The Bahamas. Spandau Ballet was on The Rise. The Police was infighting, ready to break up at any time. Police guitarist/keyboardist Andy Summers went to George Martin to help solve some infighting. That helped ... until the end of the world tour. This is what I heard from him at his book signing. 🙄 This song not only is expression of the upcoming divorce for Sting, but it also represents the infighting btw Sting + drummer/percussionist Stewart Copeland. Sting loves the 2 people, but too much tension in his relationships. Back to the songs. Spandau Ballet had True as its biggest song. The Police had the Billboard song of 1983 + Sting won Song of 1983 at The Grammys to break the streak of Michael Jackson winning so many awards. Directed by Godley + Creme. These 2 are also musicians. Suggested next Police video: Synchronicity 2. 🇺🇲🇬🇧
