Looking at the post office bosses and their amnesiac contempt and ineptitude, I can say with 20+ years of NHS service, that there is little difference in the NHS management.

I have been dismayed by my recent experience of the NHS recently getting answers or trying to discuss treatment decisions is impossible.

Can i point out firstly the Scottish Judicial leader has stated that all future Post office prosecution’s can no longer be carried out by the P.O. And in a polar opposing in Scotland the NHS is trusted, if you vote a party who don’t care you can’t then complain when it goes wrong

Thatcher was determined to knock the health services backwards by a century. These ridiculous trusts - which, as is clear - are staffed by people determined to cover their backsides and little else - are the real reason that the NHS is on it's knees. It's a terrifying edifice and it's out of control - some may say impossible to control. I wrote to Mr Hunt (carefully) 12 years ago - complaining about a scanning service which I almost mistook for a double-glazing advert - I almost binned it because it was called something like 'super scans' and looked rather tacky. He disagreed - to give him credit he did reply - but he was in total suppoprt of the fragmentation of services.

Apparently up to a month or more ago there were 4,000 plus claims and rising. I take it that these were the people with losses that paid up based on false information.

I should point out that the Pricness of Wales doesn't sully herself by getting care from the NHS. The London Clinic is a private hospital.

The primary reason we have this mentality towards public bodies and officials is deep rooted and can be best described as the advice people are given if involved in a car crash for insurance purposes... never admit responsibility... fault is arguable. The NHS isn't failing... you just don't hear about the daily positive work, relationships and saved lives. If you really want to see a comparison, then in the US medical negligence claims are $56 billion per year. In the UK claims have remained stable over the last 16 years and payouts of around £2.6 billion. I should add the the NHS is being failed... and quite deliberately.

This is brilliantly true - being failed, rather than failing as such. Have you noted that there is no more specific diagnosis - that you now have a chest infection rather than pneumonia for example. Well, this is definitely to avoid being sued. Interesting how the comparison with the US stacks up. If you adjust for size of population, it is $56 Billion for them versus $16 Billion for the NHS.

@@JohnnyHague Misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis are rarely "negligent" as there is a general understanding that mistakes are genuinely and easily made. Negligence is more usually around botched operations, procedural errors, drug errors, falsifying records and not reporting any error or concern.. moreover the reasons behind many errors is over tired and under experienced staff who are left to carry the can of complex cases and without good back up of experienced senior clinicians.

Paula has returned her award gained for services to the Post Office - Maybe Sir John Roberts 1997 - or Lord Blunkett or Sir Nick Clegg given their proximity to victim number 1 might like to consider returning theirs ? Maybe that is why Tony 2 lords doubled up in case 1 has to be returned. Maybe the jailed MP Jared O Mara (You dont get many of those you know ) should receive one along with Alan Bates and Nick Wallis........Cant wait to find out whats in my file of personal date held ny Nick Clegg once i can find Nick Clegg

“Institutional Defensiveness” is the term that Sir Brian Langstaff so eloquently affirmed. The parallels with The Post Office are staggering. He noted that the Department of Health workers "deliberately" destroyed documents, which amounts to a "pervasive cover-up"… He is clear about a statutory duty of candour and punishment for silence and this is a good move. How many civil servants will lose their honours and go to jail ? I’m not holding my breath. As for not having any O-levels, this is only part of the problem. The other part is too many Accountants and Arts Graduates trying to run businesses that rare increasingly Digital and IT run but they don’t want to understand or get involved in running complex IT programmes - because that’s for the Techies. Instead they want the CFO or the COO to tell the IT Director what to do and how to report. Whilst they do the board level communications, (or worse still the CIO reports to the COO who reports to the CFO) Poor Lesley Sewll got sidelined and hung out to dry.

Tim, .. I live in the US. I've pondered this kind of thing, myself. I'm old enough to recall an internetless medical system, and however important that really is. The best idea, or theory, that I've come up with is that daily decisions being made to save a buck, to make life easier for themselves, in medicine, over the course of time, genuinely do add up to something significantly different .. and then claim with certainty to the patients, that they, the health care professionals have "improved" the system. I suppose that the automation of the Post Office, back when Horizon was launched, COULD have been exactly what they claimed it was going to be .. and there there being no way for Britain to examine the computer cases, and monitosr being installed, to see if they were speaking from truth, .. or not. And of course, Fujitsu knew this, .. and they did what they did. Computerized, internet anything .. allows for the masking, and shielding of individuals who operate in less than ethical ways.

Public healthcare management should have managers that have both healthcare and operational improvement consultancy management experience and global consultancy background, this type of manager has worked on many healthcare human resource and operational improvement projects around the world for consultancies, and yes a lot of them are from the UK, the issue is nepotism in some management ranks to keep power, not pointing the finger at any group, but sometimes there are some specialist consultants on just under 500k a year and they often are on boards, and you might find that they decide to pick the CEO who may have a medical background but not an operational improvement background with global experience! Anyway what I find quite unique is how much some consultants get paid combining their NHS and Private work, and the amount of power they have on the system. See if cuts are going to happen they wouldn't want that pay packet cut, so people with that sort of money rule the roost, well if AI, digital systems and infrastructure track everything, and make things more efficient, does that mean they get a pay cut...well go figure!
