Wired Magazine co-founder Kevin Kelly will take first-hand experience over information he is simply given any day. His studies on human life intersecting with technology explore how nurturing our hunger to learn is the only way to consistently grow as individuals and a society. Kevin explains how this commitment to life-long learning leads to a future of endless possibilities on this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu.
SHOW NOTES:
Kevin describes dropping out of college and starting to invent his life his way. [3:35]
Kevin discusses premature optimization and how perfection can stunt your growth. [11:00]
Kevin breaks down the importance of enhancing and understanding the way you learn. [14:25]
Kevin tells how embracing being lost can help find your voice and lead to innovation. [21:54]
Kevin explains why it’s important to find the thing only you can do. [27:46]
Kevin shares what he learned when he approached life like he only had 6 months to live. [31:05]
Kevin describes what the future will look and why we should be excited. [39:10]
Kevin reveals the impact he wants to have on the world. [44:00]
QUOTES:
“You are successful because you have found yourself. That's independent of how much money you make, it's independent of how many followers you have. It's really about whether you have come to find out what it is that you can contribute, what impact you can have that no one else will have.” [10:10]
“Part of learning is unlearning what you already knew.” [15:08]
“If you read the biographies of anybody who's successful, they all have that period of time in their lives when they were lost, didn't know it. I embrace that sense of being lost.” [23:33]
“In order to support innovation you have to be comfortable with failing. You have to be comfortable with things not working out.” [26:52]

There is a more abstract take on what KK is trying to get across and that is that life surfs along down the slope between entropy and stasis and that is why it is so adaptable. Life is at the balance point between retaining as much memory or learning as possible while having the most opportunity to obtain more exposure to novelty so as to maximise the rate of learning. Our life should be no different, we need to follow that ever shifting midline between chaos and boredom, that fascinating yet survivable place where everything swirls around constantly but where we can still find meaningful patterns. I've had an interest in KK's ideas for many years and it is my understanding of his vision of what sort of minds we need to nurture to be adaptable that has informed my choice to home educate my 5 children. Because as he points out there are few places where you can really learn to be a learner rather than just learning facts or set skills that are going to rapidly become obsolete.

Tom. Just know. For the last 5 months I have been watching impact theory, then researching you because I was so amazed at how I was barely discovering you and just any information like this. It's opened all the mental doors for me to fully begin this new journey to my goals unisolated anymore. I can't even fathom the freedom i feel internally. This is only the begining. I will be meeting you in time and we'll be talking about this beginning journey you have sparked in me to see that it is there and how I took full action no matter what.

It's TRULY refreshing and reaffirming that you don't NEED to follow the "typical" path society tends to lay out for you. I used to think I was "wasting" my time after college, but that no matter what you do, experinence is expereince. How do you know what you like if you've never done it before? Go taste, and expereince, even if you're 70+ years young.

Perfectly right about the necessity of learning (I do it constantly) and as an artist I confirm the validity of "working out" instead of preparing a single great masterpiece. I don't agree though on "being lost" after graduating, instead of searching an occupation, it's too easy to lost oneself totally.

My take-aways: - Don´t specialize too much too soon. Learn to be adaptable and dynamic. - Improvements come by taking a lot of substandard attempts at doing sth, not by trying to be perfect at doing something just a few times. Better to practice more and not get perfect result, that being blocked by perfectionism and not practice enough,

I really enjoyed this episode. I'm going to watch it again. I asked myself the question, If 2018 was the last year that I would live, how would I live it? Well it's May… I'm visiting my parents in Florida. My father is having some health issues. It took until April for me to leave my job. So it's unfolding rather slowly I'd like to add some urgency to the whole endeavor. The thing that only I can do? I don't know yet but I do feel that that I might just get there if I keep asking, What if? What if? What if? And then follow some twisting little paths of discovery. Thanks, Tom. I'm so glad you're around doing what you're doing. 💛💛

JakeSimmer, thanks man. I started a vlog, "From the Blanket Fort" on m'y RU-vid channel. I'm a little behind on my updates. I should've done an episode when I left my job. It's been a heck of a two or three weeks. Two weeks basically sleeping every day. I have a tendency to depression and that's what I was doing on my days off for the last year and a half.. So expect this whole thing is going to take some time. I set up the blanket fort but I've been stuck in the man cave. There are some practices I plan to do: fasting meditating journaling and living a few media-free days. However free I think I am I know that I'm being influenced constantly by memes, the media, imagery, social norms, and the voices in my head which may or may not be my own. It seems all the grades of all time have forged her own path and really become authors of their lives and authorities in the field by digging down into the DNA of whatever they're exploring. That's what need to do. Commit to myself in my life. Here. This thought came to me the other day: Immanence= Transcendence. And the idea that enlightenment involves radical non-resistance. I have more work to do in accepting my humanity, and actually celebrating it.
@JakeSimmer
@JakeSimmer 6 лет назад
Well, that's quite a handfull to handle... I hope you can focus on action, even small steps, get a vlog out every week, or even once a month, but something, not nothing. Those thoughts and plans... nice but maby to big and to many for now... I recognize alot in your story.

“Optimizing prematurely.” Geez, that sounds so counterintuitive, especially for businessmen, entrepreneurs, etc; where it seems as though optimizing rapidly is essential. Because, if not, you crash and burn. Unless of course you have someone/something funding the trial and error phase.

Isn't there a contradiction between the idea of not optimizing prematurely and that of doing many things all the time so that we become good at it (10,000 hours and so on)?

Love his original perspective. If you live by his philosophy i feel you can be more self forgiving and actually be less hard on yourself when trying new stuff and fooling around "wasting time". However if you have a death timer near you this is actually makes it harder? Sounds a bit contradicting to me...
