In the twelfth episode of Satya Samvad, Dr. Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar interacts with Dr. Bhaskar Kamble about the identity, relevance and power of Hindu mathematics. We are moving surefootedly towards Bharatiya decolonization on various fronts, one of which involves reclaiming our mathematical heritage, from realizing that the Pythagoras Theorem should be called the Baudhayana formula just as much as Meruprastara may be more apt name for what we know as Pascal's triangle. Bharat has had the dual of centralization and decentralization in thought. Centralization in a fundamental philosophy and way of life, and decentralization in the ways it is seen in myriad avenues of life and society. Mathematics happens to be one such area. For example, in Dharmic philosophy, the concept of infinity is significant, representing the boundless and eternal nature of the universe, as seen in the celebrated Shloka Purnamadha Purnamidam. During the Vedic Period, religious texts show evidence of the utilization of large numerical values. By the era of the Yajurveda Samhita (1200-900 BCE), numbers as extensive as 10^12 were incorporated into texts. The Satapatha Brahmana, dating back to around the 7th century BCE, includes guidelines for ritualistic geometric constructions that bear resemblance to the principles outlined in the Sulba Sutra, which had one of the earliest extant verbal expression of the Pythagorean Theorem in the world. Over the centuries, we lost many of our traditional mathematical techniques. Decolonization in the modern context means that we must reclaim our intellectual capital, and mathematics must be part-and-parcel of that exercise.

Sangh has always stood for power of Hindu mathematics. Even in British India we had many experts who have worked on this under the nose of the firangis. Vidya Bharati has done good work to make sure that students learn about our Indian mathematicians in schools. I admire the range of topics covered in this discussion between Mrutyunjayji and Bhaskarji. Also their gyan is amazing. ॐ

Mathemtics is mathematics. Nobody calls Gauss or Euler's contributions as European mathematics or Christian mathematics. Human knowledge is unversal. Otherwise, we have to say Jewish theory of relativity!

I would like to mention a 1947 book on Ancient Indian Mathematics. The book is " Ancient Indian Mathematical and Vedha by prof L v Gurjar". For me it was a revelation and a source of great happiness. The speaker is very knowledgeable with lot of research he has done. I was hoping to get name of book written by him. Even more books available on the subject.

Indian have been amazing in many fields, especially big numbers, sulva sutra ,concept of place value, expansions, algebra, original idea of calculus , trigonometry. All sides got developed perhaps earliest. Largest to the smallest time periods .8600000 life forms was the highest number any one suggested earliest. A year of Bhrama . Concept of zero and one has been most fruitful for the development of digital computing which itself has revolutionized all science. Now it is the time to catch up may be as done by China specially. I am very optimistic but one has to develop sciences. Many other medical and cultural heritage need also recognised and developed further. I hope the National Book Trust should get up to provide cheap meaningful books. Navosti press under USSR had done a great job. We must replicate without going into mythology or politics. Good luck India. Good luck

Sanaatan Dharam is 100% scientific. We will be Hindu Raashtra again and have our Gurukul Parampara back. But only if we become Dhaarmik again. Rajiv Malhotra has said himself that we have nobody to blame. Its us who lost our Panditaai. It is who lost out Kshatriyata. And its up to restore our Hindu Raashtra. So, stop complaining, accusing, blaming and reclaim your own Adhyaatmikta.

It was not fortuitous that parents of Dr Kamble named their son Bhaskara. Mahavira, a Jain monk and mathematician boasted that ganita is at the heart of all--from Veda to wealth making to grammar (लौकिके वैदिके कामतंत्रे अर्थशास्त्रे...सर्वेषु प्रस्तुतं गणितं परम् Gaṇitasārasan̄graha 9-11). Bhaskara I (6th century) & Bhaskara II (12th century) showed that it was not a vain claim. Now, Bhaskara III (Dr Bhaskar Kamble) is destined to show how ganita is the imperishable seed of the three dimensional (adhyatmika, adhidaivika and adhibhautika) cosmos.

This kind of thinking is flawed. For one, it's impossible to excel in just one aspect of science, such as mathematics. A large group of humans, especially a very large one, should be proficient in all fields of human endeavour: mathematics, engineering, medicine, agriculture, economics, arts, literature, philosophy, exploration, defense, weapons, governance methods like democracy and republics, law, space exploration, oceanography, geography, military science, weapons development, ethics, education, psychology, and even challenging societal norms, as Galileo did with religion. But you did not. Secondly, if you were truly outstanding in mathematics, by logical extension (modus ponens), you would also need to excel in engineering and all other endeavors at which humans can excel especially because you had the largest population in the ancient world. If this were the case, you wouldn't have been *conquered* repeatedly for 1,000 years, especially by invaders vastly outnumbered by *your* population. Thirdly, you should have been the ones to created industrial revolution hundreds or even 1000s of years before the Europeans. But you didn't. Fourthly, even setting all that aside, after gaining independence in the 1940s, you should have developed into a first-world country given your large population and given 75 years which is a very long time. But you couldn't. So all this suggests is that your so-called mathematical prowess was not any expertise at all and was merely a result of having a large population historically, which naturally led to the emergence of some mathematicians which did some stuff.

Mr Micpin, a.k.a This kind of thinking is flawed, First, thanks for clearly expressing your thoughts - sceptical, yes. Cynical, hopefully, not! Not only you, but a large chunk of Indians share your view. Heck, I used to think like that 10 years ago. So I empathize with you. The purpose of organizations such as infinity foundation is to dispel such myths for the world but especially for Indians themselves. 1. You say, "For one, it's impossible to excel in just one aspect of science, such as mathematics -- should be proficient in all fields of human endeavour ...But you did not." BUT, oh yes we did. For all these fields just google them with a prefix "Indian" as in "Indian Philosophy", you may be in for a surprise! From your description you have not studied in depth about temple architecture in South India or Cave temples in the north dating back to 600BC. These are architectural, engineering and artistic marvels. Taj Mahal, one of the world wonders, is merely a pretty mausoleum compared to these. It would be impossible to build these monuments without blueprints, geometry, calculation planning, management and resource allocation. It is news to even many Indians that Sushruta (600 BC) wrote a treatise on surgery and plastic surgery. Google Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and USA's National Institute of health. Indian Ayurvedic medicine is pretty deep and closest to personalized medicine. Since the first century BC up until 1700 India and china held 45% world GDP each because of their agricultural and engineered products. Why do you think European powers were so desperate to find alternate ways to India? To share the Good Book? No, but to reach the riches. The Indus valley (3000BC) seals are found in Mesopotamia indicate economic exchange through the sea trade between them. Do you know that Vedas are the oldest living literature of the humans and the poetry and meter excels that of any language - according to Greek scholars. Please look up Prof. Nicholas Kazana's website to learn about the exalted literature, philosophy of Vedas and other Indian literature. The epics Ramayana and Mahabharata still provide the ethics, governance, warfare, diplomacy to the current generation people and professionals. Do you heard of Mahabharata? Written about 3000 years ago, the epic verse is the longest - even longer than Iliad and Odyssey - combined. It is true that Indians did not send any space vehicle until recently, but they were pioneers in astronomy and cosmology - they call it Jyotisha, the study of bright objects. They used astronomy to maintain calendars, historical records, and travel, especially navigation. This is a fascinating field. For psychology, one must read the Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Patanjali was the teacher of Panini - the grammarian that linguists study at MIT. Arguing is essential in Indian society (see the book, Argumentative Indian by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen) as they are to Jews and Greeks. The various philosophical schools - Buddhist, Jainist, vedic and yes, Atheist - challenged and argued using rhetoric and logic. Google Charvaka. You say, "Secondly, if you were truly outstanding in mathematics, by logical extension you would also need to excel in all other endeavors" I hope you are not an Indian and even if so, it is time for you travel India. It is not expensive but could be arduous. Get a knowledgeable guide. Yes conquering did happen by Islam. Even after destroying Egyptian, Iranian and Anatolian civilizations, Islam could not destroy Indian civilization. Just as ISIS now, the earlier Jihadist Islam used the same tactics to spread its faith. Now it targets Europe - mainly UK and Germany which gave it refuge. Later, the western powers first came to trade and convert but slowly metastasized. India is waking up from the 500 years of that dark age. A comment below summarizes aptly: Lot of information was lost when our world famous libraries were ransacked and burnt to ashes by barbarians . "Thirdly, you should have been the ones to created industrial revolution hundreds or even 1000s of years before the Europeans. But you didn't. " India doesn't do revolutions. It evolves. There is no need when you are self sufficient and moral. When the Europe finally discovered industrialization, India was under the British rule which not only destroyed indigenous industries, looted the country, stole the raw materials and saw to that industrial progress did not reach its colonies. "Fourthly, even...after gaining independence in the 1940s, you should have developed into a first-world country". This is a very valid point. India should have but for the socialist leanings of early leaders like Nehru, unable unshackle the colonized mind of 500 years. But it is changing. 75 years may be a very long time for a young country like the USA. But it is just a blink of an eye for the old living civilizations like India and China. Continue your challenge, but also study, at least the Wiki. We call it Purva Paksha. Indology is a fascinating subject of the oldest and the newest civilization. As colorful , noisy, entertaining and enchanting like a bollywood movie and at the same time as profound and silent as the Upanishads that guided the likes of Oppenheimer, Schrödinger, Bohr, Heisenberg and several other philosophers such as Schopenhauer, Thoreau, Emerson and Mark Twain. You are in for a treat. Welcome to Bharat, as we call India!
