Arvid, thanks for those videos, they are highly informative and easy to follow, I'm transitioning from max+vray to maya+arnold and this is being super helpful! thanks again
for beginners I would recommend checking out the mtoa user guide, they have good getting started tutorials. This is aimed for intermediate artists and more experienced. But if you have more specific question I can try to help you.
is seems like we're just promoting this guy's additional plugins. I've only gotten 3 tutorials in, but do you have more of us the standard shaders? This curvature sounds like it would be incredible for scientific cells and stuff. I wish there was a way to do this with the basic shaders-like the way Mental Ray would hook right in to the vCoord.
the new arnold mtoa plugin 1.4 has now a curvature shader too. I am not trying to promote him, I just want to share the best practices with the most appropriate shaders for the work.
thanks the tutorials are great! For some reason when I am in the hypershade I cant see my input connections on my nodes even though I do activate both input and output connections. Any ideas?
Hi Arvid, first of all thank you, your tutorial are really great!! Just one question, I have maya 2017 installed but my Arnold differs a little from the one in the video. For example, in my Arnold render view I can't see the dropdown for Isolate Select command. Also my materials are different, I have a refraction section in my aiStandar but it doesn't have the same options. Can you help me?
In the Arnold render view window, there are menus and in one of them you can toggle ui elements. It is called debug menu or something like that. You are using the aiStandard shader which ships with Arnold. I am using a shader called alSurface. Check the video 102 and 112 how to use and install them. That should get you up to speed.
Hey Arvid, question: my ALremapFloat node doesn't have all those attributes in the attribute editor it only shows a few, the remap section only have a mask input and I don't have all the rest of inputs that you tweak
You can right click on the node end click "Edit Custom Attribute List" and then choose which attributes should appear on default when expanding the attributes using 4.
Arvid Somehow the attribute list doesn't update for me. I've copied the alShaders folder in maya2017 folder and set it properly in the maya.env . The shaders show and everything but when i set the attribute as soon as i click away they don't show in the node's list . Any clue?
Hi Arvid, I'd like to ask why are you always connecting the out color R to an input slot instead of "total" out color? don't you want the whole ambient occlusion for example - meaning r g b channels instead of just the red channel? I'm somewhat past the beginner stage but don't get concepts like what I'm asking now. Or if anyone else know why he uses the r channel as an input instead of the whole r g b, feel free to chime in. Thanks!
Black and white images can be expressed with a single channel, instead of a color which needs the combined RGB channels to express the color. Roughness for example, only takes a black and white image to determine gloss vs matte, same with ambient occlusion, metalness, etc. You see this often in game engines, where you will pack your Roughness, Metal, and Ambient occlusion maps into a single image (R, G, and B channels), you then just connect those single channels to the shaders. Hope this helps. Open a picture in photoshop and look at the channels Tab, you can isolate the R G and B and see what they look like.
this actually does not appear to be working for me. I'm trying this on a torus and I'm getting stripes instead of it seeing the countour of my shape. it atually does not appear to be affecting the contour like your's does. This looks to have great potential for medical animation, but I can't get it to work like I could previously using facing ratio with Mental Ray.
hey my friend first off all.. nice tutorials, they re great ..next...i have been wondering how do you manage to render some specific objects and sttill gett reflecction, refracction light bouncing from your scene using arnold ...like this ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xn5bJPbWOD4.html ...sorry for my bad english my friend
