The year is 328 BCE and once again tension in Central Italy is beginning to rise. The Samnites and the Romans were locked in a fierce battle for influence over the region. So far, it seemed as though the Romans were the clear favorites. They had just recently humiliated the Samnites in the 1st Samnite Roman War during the years of 343, 342, 341 BCE. With their victory Rome had not only managed to push the border between the two polities further into what had been recognized Samnite territory but they had also managed to gain the allegiance or at least the cooperation of the Campanians, a very rich people located in, you guessed it, Campania. In the intervening years, a period of about 13 years, the Romans and the Samnites had not directly challenged one another. Instead, they had been competing in an influence war. Rome would gain the allegiance of alliance of a city-state here while the Samnites would gain the same with a city-state over here. This game though was about to change and with this change a new war would break out that would decide who could lay claim to Central Italy. It was time for a more direct conflict to begin. What caused this change? Why did war break out? And who would ultimately be victorious? Let’s talk about it.

I love the almost niche nature of your videos, it fills a big gap on Roman RU-vid content. And you taught me the old city came before the new city. Also, I would have to guess the story Cursor and Rullianus is probably mostly exaggerated like you said. It reminds me of a story of a son being order dead by (I believe) and emperor, where his father begs for him to be spared, only for the father to either be killed instead or killed as well. I can't quite remember.

Very very good! I’ve seen lots of content on the Samnite wars but none have covered the broader geopolitical landscape in Italy at the time. You covered so many tribes and cities that are normally left out by other historians when retelling of Rome’s Italian expansion. Campanians, Sidicini, Aurunci, Volscian,Palaeopolis, Napoli, Apulians, Lucanians and Vestini were some of the names you included. Now that’s when I do learn something. The maps are great too at showing their location to one another and this helps me understand the whole dynamic. You would think other RU-vid creators would include these details but you stand alone my good man. Peace.

5:45 What two towns?. What I understood from you that Neapolis didnt exist at that time, and was only Pealeopolis existed at that time, then Pealeopolis will become Neapolis.

So yes and no. What would become Neapolis did exist at the time, in that the physical buildings were there. However, the two towns were technically not fully separate political entities. That would happen under the Romans. Hopefully that helps clear that up! Thanks for watching!
