When TPIR celebrates its 50th anniversary, I really hope that CBS has both Drew and Bob to reminisce about the show fondly.What a PARTY that would be! Should be at least a two hour extravaganza,with clips a-plenty including Johnny Olson and Rod Roddy.Drew can talk about his time on the show so far(12 years).Bob can lead off on the show's beginning when it was rebooted in 1972(7 years after the 1965 cancellation).
@Bob Chessick Actually, his last show was April 1st, 2015. And not only that, he refused to be on the show ever again because in one of the specials, they offered a trip to SeaWorld, which goes against Bob's practices with animal rights organizations. Fair and understandable, but you are correct about his failing health. For him to catch COVID would be very bad for his already bad health.
If it were played for 5 digits, the first one would be revealed and Drew would ask the player what number they want (second-fifth). Play would resume as normal

It seemed silly to me to introduce a game with a board configured for only 4-digit cars in 1986 when they had been introducing 5-digit cars (outside of Golden Road) for years, and were already transitioning existing games (like 3 Strikes, Any Number, Dice Game) to accommodate 5 digits.
I recognize the font of the digits as well as the dollar sign. It is called “Dolphin”, which is the lettering font for the NFL team Miami Dolphins, believe me, I know!!! I took lettering class when I was seventeen and a senior in high school!!!

While the "official" reason for retiring this game is said to be it was too confusing to players, for me the reason this game was blah was it was rather anticlimactic once the 3rd digit was filled in. A game is much more exciting when you don't know the outcome until the very end, and this game did not allow for that. This is why to me it should have been retired.
@Bob Chessick I can see why one would think that, however, Pathfinder began on April 7, 1987 while Add 'Em Up's last playing wasn't until October 3, 1988, so both games were part of the rotation for about a year and a half. That being said, I rather doubt that both pricing games were featured in the same episode, given the readout used for both games was the same. Also a bit of trivia, Pathfinder was the last new pricing game to debut while Bob Barker was still dying his hair dark.
@Will N Not really, because DTM is basically guessing where the first prize is higher or lower in price than the second. With AEU, you're guessing digits in the price based on what they total, which if Kakuro puzzles were more popular, could be used as a reason to play the game. I envisioned at one point a game called "Car-kuro", played for 2 cars, the prices having all the digits 1-9 with 1 repeat where they cross, you're given the sum, and you have to figure out where the numbers go. You pretty much know which one goes to which, but have to guess the right order.
@Will N Buy or Sell is much closer to More or Less than Give or Keep... although the Temptation of trying to Cover Up what you're saying this way would even make Professor Price blush... You don't really have to calculate anything with Do The Math. At the end of the day, understanding pricing games comes down to basic tricks and using different words. If #2 is more, you add. If it's less, you subtract. Just like if the price is more, you buy. If it's less, you sell.
@Will N Maybe in terms of score keeping they're similar (+/- based on the right/wrong decision), but higher/lower than wrong price vs. higher priced of two prizes make for different concepts. One Wrong Price isn't so bad; heck when I was a kid before the game came out, I thought it'd be a cool idea. At least it's not that screaming game played for a car; I'd say it but they don't like yelling in these parts. ;)
@Will N I keep playing in my head, How could Make Your Mark (first saw it with Davidson) been explained to lessen the chance of a flub? However, as much as I like skee ball, that game just took way too long, so I'm not surprised they dumped it. To be fair, I stopped watching a little after Drew took over. I'll check in on new pricing games every now and then, but seeing some of the statistics does worry me. You need winners. It's the old Vegas idea: A loser tells 2 people; a winner tells 200. I think I saw a game hadn't been won in 3 years that was generally winnable... and they cancelled one of my favorite games because it was never won in Fortune Hunter?! Perhaps stemming from the Terry Kniess episode....
The reason why "Add'em Up" was retired was due to its abysmal win/loss record and the fact that you have to be exactly right. The displays seen in this game found its way to a far more popular and successful pricing game (Pathfinder).
I liked this game, I wish The Price is Right would bring back some of the classic games, like Add em Up, Hurdles, Penny Ante, Give or Keep, Credit Card, and the Poker Game, I miss those pricing games, I thought they were cool pricing games. :)
Don't we all; unfortunately, Add 'Em Up was too difficult of a game for many contestants and the game was put out of its misery by the end of season 16.
It wasn’t the only reason -After you find the second correct number it was an almost a win guaranteed -Not popular to The Price Is Right staff -The reduce of four digits car, it never play for 5 or 6 digits car
This is one reason why I hated this game, once the 3rd digit was lit up, the ending of the game was anti-climactic. In spite of the rules being "confusing" supposedly, to me that's the real reason this game ended up in the scrap heap, anti-climactic.
You know looking at the rules again....I think there may have been a remedy to that, in that once you get to the final 2 numbers, you have to then pick them BOTH once to win. This means you'd have to actually add them as you chose them vs one at a time. It'd make for better TV that way. Or even better yet.....you coulda also done it where at the start of the game you choose the 3 numbers you believe total the target number when added to the 4th. From there, it's played like a mix of Cover Up and One Away. You are told if you're right and if not, how many you got right but not which numbers are right. Then you'd have to guess which number(s) to switch out. If you guess right you win, if not you lose. That woulda actually worked the best I believe.
This game is too simple, mathematically speaking, especially since you're given one number for free and allowed one mistake. If you had even a basic idea about the prices of cars in the late-80's you could easily walk away with the prize.
This was a great game as Pathfinder was the most successful follow-up but I believe it should have lasted longer and could have been five digits but not one number could be repeated, the first number would be revealed and the contestant would have made more than one mistake guessing a number not in the price of the car and still win the car nor should it have been retired.
