From episode #6934D, originally broadcast on June 30, 1988 (though this clip is from the December 20, 1988 repeat). One of the only $15,000 wins in The Phone Home Game; it includes the plug for folks at home who wanted to play the game.
The following video is rated a dynamite 6 in my book. Two contestants winning a share of $15,000 in "The Phone Home Game" on "The Price Is Right" was something special. Janice Pennington did it well. Way To Go!! Do not throw out that clip!!
If you think about it, the home player used the best possible strategy, to go with the two 'obvious' prices, and they were rewarded with the 2000 and 3000 dollar amounts.
I like you; mostly because you like the Price Is Right, too. I stayed home "sick" from high school to watch the debut of the New Price Is Right back in 1972. I've been a fan from day one. I am a member of Golden Road too. Great website. But know this: the insiders of TPIR tell the outsiders exactly what they want to - most times exactly what Barker wants them to - under penalty of lawsuit. He has an image to protect. He fails to know that image is already stained forever. He's dust.
That gets me thinking, I wonder if Ralph Edwards, the man who first discovered Barker, would have showed up for that show if he were still alive today?
+Steve Kovacs The producers would never try to bring this game out of retirement; to the best of my knowledge, this was the only time a contestant and home viewer shared the full $15,000, but other than that, I don't know of any other contestant and home viewer who shared more than $12,000. The defunct Game Show Central site had a picture of a $12,200 win from one of the final times the game was played, but again, to the best of my knowledge, this was the *ONLY* time a contestant and home viewer split the full maximum amount ($15,000). Another reason why they would never try to bring it back is because of the low win percentage it had during the game's original run (1983-88).
+Steve Kovacs Actually, I think you may be right about that. The game, just like several other retired games (Super Ball, On the Spot, Penny Ante, et al), took too long to play, and as I mentioned, I believe this playing of Phone Home Game on June 30, 1988, was the *only* time a contestant and home viewer split the full $15,000.
@@disneyfan8178 I agree, and I can add more to your point. They can call the remakes: "TelePlay", "Face-To-Face", "Screen Time", "Space-Time Vortex"; or anything else that the TPIR gamers want. Moreover, they should have share amounts that will ultimately make TPIR the thing to watch: like the stage and computer screen contestant sharing up to $100,000. on CBS daytime; or an exponentially higher amount on Big Money Week; like the stage and screen contestant sharing up to a half million dollars...😱
It was retired because the staff wanted to discontinue the Play-Along features. The show never brings games out of retirement, and it isn't up to Drew if they should bring a game out of retirement.
Thanks for posting this - I never saw this win. I still am baffled why this game was retired. It was great. I hope Drew brings it out of retirement and several others too. BONKERS should be retired! Now, that's a lousy game!
I agree completely. In fact, I wrote to CBS and told them making him Executive Producer was the biggest mistake they could have made. Mark Goodson would have NEVER allow Barker to get qaway with what he did. I will admit to having idolized Barker... he was great - and probably will go down in history as being the best game show host. But what he did to those good ladies is unforgivable. He should be ashamed of himself.
I won this game also in June 1988 for the same amount. Does anyone have a copy? I believe it was filmed June 7 1988, not sure when air date was. Lost our copy over the years .
Linda Molnar i love it when i find former contestants on a show in the comments section! they always got the inside stuff! did you make it to the showcase?
Yes but did not win at the wheel. I won 15k. split with phone in player so we each won 7500. Lost our copy and would love to get a copy. Does anyone have any ideas how to do this ?
Linda Molnar IDK. however, you're in that same boat with my mom, who was a contestant, won her way on stage, played plinko, won $1500 there, but lost at the wheel. I'm looking for that episode as well.
(cont'd) Bob had the game retired, because he didn't want that issue to rise again, not because he disliked the game. Hurdles, which was retired in 1983, was retired due to mechanical problems, as was Finish Line in 1978. If they are any other games you think Bob retired because he disliked it, list them and I will tell you the real reason they were retired.
This was a celebation of his 50 year career. There was no need to have pricing games or showcase. Normally, there would be clips of that career with people who shared those years with him. Namely, the living members of TPIR family, but most of them were discarded - Janice & Anita who started with him; Holly, Kathleen, and some of the other models from the years. But no, Barker made sure he got rid of all of them, so he could say he was the last one remaining from day one.
My dad said that when he worked in tool rooms back in the 70s people would carve their SSNs on their tools to identify them and that he later had to scrape that off
They probably didn't have time; it was only an hour show, and they had to play 3 pricing games, a Showcase, and some lots of clips. It was unlikely they'd have a lot of guests, and the guests they did have did congratulate him on 50 years. Besides, who else would they get as a guest to congratulate him on 50 years? It can't be some random person; it wouldn't be the same.
0:58 - We'd be hearing that chant on a different show in a few years LOL. 1:06 - What was wrong with Bob?! Actual Retail Pri-ah-oh-uh; Actual Retail Price - and obvious bad edit there!
You are right about the dates for Cliff and Finish line, however games were routinely retired because Barker disliked them. If someone is telling you otherwise, they are covering up for Barker. He disliked Super Saver supposidly because of electronic failure. This was the 20th century and you telling me they couldn't get the game to operate properly? Bull. Barker just got tired of some games or felt they weren't fun enough for HIM. It was all about HIS ego the last decade.
I didn't say Bob never had a game retired; I said Bob never retired a game because he disliked it. It is a common misconception that mechanical problems doomed $uper $aver (just like it is a common misconception the end of the show is called the Showcase Showdown or that Money Game & Give or Keep debuted on the same day or that Grand Game was won on its 1st playing or that the name of the cash game with the hole punching is or was at one point officially called Punchboard).
I don't think it was Bob's decision to begin with unlike banning fur products and offering export cars. Besides not all games were retired because Bob disliked them; in fact, none were because Bob disliked them. FYI: Finish Line debuted February 21, 1978 and Cliff Hangers debuted April 12, 1976; therefore, Finish Line wasn't retooled to become Cliff Hangers, since it debuted after Cliff Hangers. Also, I like Pick a Number. It's a quick but enjoyable game to watch, unlike Double Prices.
Unfortunately, twotonedearly, after the end of season 16, the show's producers decided they would retire Phone Home Game, because rarely, if ever, did anyone win much money playing the game. In fact, this particular playing was the *ONLY* time a contestant and home viewer shared the full maximum amount a team could win ($15,000). There were a few who won about $12,000, maybe $13,000 tops, but again, this was the only time a contestant and home viewer shared the full $15,000. Also, the game took too long to play, plus, there's no way, even if it was brought back, the producers could find any other medium, aside from a home phone, to make it work. There's no way it would work on a cell phone, much less Skype or any other video calling website.
Now that Bob is retired, why don't the insiders of TPIR tell us the truth? It's not like Bob, who is no longer a part of TPIR, can do anything about it.
It seems that it's possible that a perfect playing could result in less than $15,000. What if different prices were called out by the person on the phone? Or, are the prices purposely matched up with the 3 prizes that will automatically win $15,000?
@dab423 Times HAVE changed for the better in many ways! Just because you can't send a postcard for a contest, doesn't mean it's bad. Technology has made things more secure and VERY MUCH BETTER! Most things have changed for the better, whether you want to adimit it or not! Jeez, What's with you?
Brad Francini's Phone Home Game page states that the podium for the small products was NEVER SHOWN and... Well, take a look at 2:30 and decide for yourself. ;)
I will agree with you that Bob's ego got in the way during his last several years. However, it was NOT mechanical problems that doomed $uper $aver. Bob made a mistake explaining the rules. He forgot to say it was still mathematically possible to win the game if a contestant picked the marked-up item. A woman picked it, thought she lost, and put no effort into winning the game. She told Standard & Practices about it, and they decided to award her the prize.
TPIR wouldn't be the same without its basic concept of pricing game & Showcases; there should be no reason for there to be a show without them. The reason Janice, Holly, and Kathleen (to name a few) weren't there was because they hated Bob and were fired by him (directly or indirectly). Even if they were asked back, I doubt they would come. Any guest stars would not be ones that hate Bob. (Also, the model's name is Anitra.) You said you were a member of Golden Road. What is your username?
How many $15k wins have there been in the Phone Home Game?? I've heard about one person getting $12,000, another getting $12,200. Was this the only $15k win??
You said earlier that Barker never had a game retired. Now you say he did. At 20 years of age, I dont think you know any more than anyone else. I remember that mistake and Barker had it retired for that reason. However, the excuse given was mechanical failure - not Barker failure. There was nothing wrong with that game and there would be nothing wrong with it if it were returned out of "retirement." Barker is the only one who should stay "retired.
Yes he can. He can still slap anyone with a lawsuit. How many has he slapped with one in the last 10 years? He doesn't have to have anything to do with TPIR to sue someone who says anything negative about his reputation. Think for a moment - who showed up for the grand Barker tribute celebarting his 50 years in show business. NO ONE. Only an actor he punched in a movie. That is unheard of! NO ONE to congratulate him on 50 years? NO ONE likes him. How very sad. Once great, now dust.
Perhaps now that Barker no longer has a say in what happens, the "tradition" of not bringing games out of retirement because Barker grew to dislike them, will also be discontinued. Phone Home was great, as was Super Saver, Split Decision, and Penny Ante. Bonkers and Pick A Number are awful. Finish Line was a good game that was never really given a chance. I suspect it was retooled and became Cliff Hangers. I miss Barker as host but he should have never been named Executive Producer.
I don't think the Play Along feature from c. 1986-88 applied to the SHowcases. It would appear in various pricing games and in the SCSD. If it appeared in the SCSD, they had three postcards drawn. If someone spun $1K, the name at the top of the stack of cards won $1K and whatever the in-studio contestant won in the bonus spin. They then read the second card in the stack. If the first two contestants won $1K, they read the third card.
Yes, I want a game created by Barker to be retired. He's history now - Thank God. Once he was great, then came the lies. And the persecution of the models. What Barker did to Holly, to Kathleen and especially to Janice, is unforgiveable.
