Just so everyone understands, he was not only the lowest bidder, but he went last as well. He could’ve guessed ‘one dollar’ and he still would’ve won. He left himself virtually no margin for error, and nailed it.
Probably had seen that prize offered on the show before and knew the exact bid. They do repeat prizes and many people have won with exact bids that way. Or he was just really dumb and lucky.
The way Bob stretches the moment of suspense and whips the crowd into a frenzy, all without raising his voice above a grandfatherly chat, is the stuff that would give Hitchcock chills. RIP Bob the King
@@uscdave1124 in watching the old game shows, the closest that comes to Bob are Dick Clark and Alex Trebek in terms of quality of hosting. Bob was a lot better than even those of his era. Way better than Gene Rayburn or Richard Dawson.
I used to love when he did this Just-Push-The-Button-Already routine to contestants who were clearly overcome with excitement. (leans in to push button for the first of five times to see if she won...) What's the first thing you're gonna do if you win this car?
My favourite part is how all the other contestants get so excited for him. They all lost but instead of being bummed out about it they are enjoying and celebrating a historic moment in the shows history.
How do you know they don't? People have said constantly that they saw a particular item on the show a few days prior, and that was the price. Or they've been out window shopping and noticed those prices (that's how I always came close with the price of cars). I'll give you they can't see Bob's card, but if you think you know it from previous encounters, why not go for it and try to make the $500 bonus? There's only so many products out there that advertisers are willing to place, and some producers are OK with people trying to memorize prices from the show because that means they're watching every day, which keeps the producers in business.
Bob Barker would be a savage legend if he did that buildup for the $999 guy's bid, and then just casually said the first bidder's $1200 was the exact correct bid lol
@@bmoshareholderappleshareho855 But if he was over, they would have re-bid, and could have gotten it again. Plus, it was the first item up for bid on the show (Bob only did that explanation for the first one); if he was wrong, he would have had 5 more chances to get up there.

Bob was such a great presenter. Building up the moment, then when he finally reveals it, he skips words and goes straight to the "$999!". The man knew how to entertain.
@Karl with a K damn, you really don't know how to be light-hearted about a game show? you have to go and insult imaginary women? enjoy being with jill forever.
God I loved Bob Barker. The man knew how to keep positive and uplifting but never, EVER missed an opportunity to poke a little grumpy fun at a contestant. This man had some serious emotional range. It's too bad he never pursued more of an acting career.
Bob actually addressed that in an interview. He said that he got asked about Happy Gilmore every day on the set and was always asked why he didn’t do more movies. He said he simply refused to do nude scenes.
and that's why bob barker's the best host of the show PERIOD. he was always SO full of enthusiasm, and whenever someone hit it big, he always made sure to drag out the suspense like a troll. it really gave the show SO much character!
I believe it was the 1st time the last person bidding won withe the exact bid with a bid below the lowest bid by 1 dollar I am sure other had it exactly right before
@ericcarve4476 Yes, until circa 1993, when Dian Parkinson left the show due to sexual aligations, and from then on, Bob handed ✋🏻 over every perfect one bidder their bonus money 💵 whether they were women or men and in November 1998 it changed to $500.
it's actually pretty clever. he thought it was less than 1000 and since nobody bid under a thousand he would have won if the answer was between 0-999 if he had said 900 for example
+Adriaan Van Zanten According to the rules if you bid over the amount, then you lose. So if the price had actually been $998, then no one would have win. The best bet for Jose would have been $1. Then he would have won if the price was anywhere between $1 and $999. This is why being last to bid is such a huge advantage in the game.
Not just that, but Bob Barker's so good at acting like he genuinely didn't know the result, even before he pulls out the card (and you'll notice that he never actually pulls out the card enough to read anything on it). Even the "oh, for f*ck's sake he got it" look he gave was on point.
@@2097Pyros You can see him peek at 1:27, all he needed was a 9 to know haha (though he was still acting of course so your point stands, but I think he had to look at it to know)
Actually, no! Kyle had even better luck in another round, and was actually one of the most amazing contestants ever. Look up "Price is Right Unbelievable Half Off." I remember that episode and was blown away by his amazing psychic abilities that won him the game!!
This is an example of why Bob was the greatest host ever. The exact number in a bid is so rare but he didn't miss a beat when the bell chimed. Then was able to humorously heckel a contestant who made an extremely poor bid, obviously realizing he was the one who had it exactly right, and did it all without a single stutter. He made it look so easy. We miss you Bob!
It’s moments like this that remind you what an incredible host Bob was. You know that once he highlighted it, the audience knew $999 was the one. But he still stretched that moment, and had the audience in the palm of his hand. That’s incredible skill.

@@gagefisher3375 Perfect bids happen from time to time, so it makes sense for Bob to have $500 ready. The only thing that made it unusual was bidding the exact price while being only $1 less than the next highest bid, which of course doesn’t net any additional cash.
Vlad Piranha i was thinking more along the lines of "her with grandkids, and great grandkids" and when they get tucked into bed, she'll say something like "have i ever told you the story of that great 999 bid?"
Usually if you see very energetic people on TV it's because TV shows WANT those people on their shows. They know they have a better chance on a different show if they show this clip to them. Trust me, it's how you get on TV in the first place. Be stupidly energetic
I was on the Price is Right in 1994 when Bob was the host. I played Plinko (won $7,000) and won some other stuff (desk, blood pressure machine, umbrella, etc.). My clearest memory of that day was just how funny Bob was with the audience. During the commercial breaks, he interacted with us and was absolutely hysterical. As a 19 year-old, I didn't think an "old" man could be that funny, but he was out of control hilarious. Miss you Bob!
I remember watching a show years ago, first person bid $1, next person bid $2, 3rd bid $3, all the last person had to do was bid $4 and she won, instead she bids up in the thousands and was over.

You know why this show is better than everything else? 1 guy wins, and every contestant is happy for him even though they lost. If this was done by Fox there would be drinks thrown and a slap fight.
The Price Is Right has always encouraged the audience to yell out prices. The story behind this clip is that Jose was told the price by Theodore Slauson an audience member and avid viewer of the show. Slauson, studied the prices from previous episodes as they remained the same from show to show. In fact there are a ton of episodes where contestants listened to him, and some of those shows have 4 or more perfect bids. This is the same Theodore Slauson who provided the exact bid amount to a contestant in the show case show down which resulted in the show changing how the prices are determined to ensure that memorization could not longer occur.
Not to mention you should never round up if you want the exact amount. Go to the stores, except for those discount type places you rarely see an evening round number like 1,000.

Aspiring Broadcasters and Hosts take note: Bob Barker was the master of gentle hyperbole - the way he built up the moment...the way he got the crowd involved...the way he stretched it out to grab everyone's attention...that's how a master of his craft does it.
ZaneTruesdale007 OH fooling around... So that's what the young folks are calling it these days? In any event I must have been thinking of the models not the contestants. I guess it would be a scandal if he was a preacher or something.

One thing about Bob that I liked was that he could say something that would come off as rude, but he had a way of doing it with humor and class at the same time. So you forgave him for it anyway. Any other guy would have been punched in the face.
I use closed captions whenever possible when watching RU-vid videos and this is probably the first time that a non-auto translate option is more confusing than the auto-translate. 😂
For those of you who are struggling to find out why bidding 999 was a bad idea here. If indeed Jose thought it was less then 1,000 he could have bid $1 and had 100% chance of winning. But since he bid $999 if the price was $998 or less they all would have lost and had to rebid. Either he was absolutely dumb but got lucky, or he somehow really thought it was $999 dead on, but still most people would play it safe and say $1.
It's the perks of going last. If the first person bids 1$, the next person will wall them in by bidding slightly more. Going last means people can't bid against you
Nick Cowan I've seen one episode of The Price is Right where the first person bid $1, the second person bid $2, the third person bid $3 and then the fourth person bid $4 and automatically won. It was hilarious, and also goes to show that bidding $1 can be risky depending on what strategy other people use. Technically everyone could do that and it would guarantee the last bidder to win every time, but that would also take the suspense out of the show. If everyone started doing that, my guess is the director would come in and tell them to bid something else and re-shoot, or just change the format of the game. But people rarely do that, because it's a pretty unsafe strategy unless you're the last person bidding.
Actually, watching this and looking at the people bidding "1200", "1000" and "1300", I was thinking "Are you crazy? Prices are almost always "x99" or "x49", never the even thousand. If you think it is $1300, bid $1299 and so forth.
@@dmullz100 To be fair, no one knew for sure until Barker said it (at which point all bids were made). Jose could have bid $1 and it could've been 1100 for example. Granted, you're going under the context that everyone now knows so I guess aren't wrong (hindsight is 20/20)

OK I'm not understanding all of these comments about Bob carrying $500 in his pocket for 35 years. Of course he carried $500 in his pocket in case someone hit the bid perfectly. It happens several times a year so he carries the $500. To Bob, $500 is nothing. He got paid millions. And it wasn't his money anyway. It was the show's money.
+1FatHappyBirthday "It happens several times a year" Are you not watching the same video as the rest of us? Bob clearly said this was an historic moment that has never happened before.
+Daniel Cox I think Bob was referring to the fact that Jose won by bidding a dollar under another person because the only possible way for him to win is to get it exactly right or the other person would be closer to the correct price (or they both go over). I'm sure plenty of other people have gotten the price exactly right before, just not with such a close bid.
+Daniel Cox Yes, getting the correct bid happens in many, many episodes. But never has anyone gone last and bid a dollar under another bid and got the price right. That was a stupid move because the rules are closest without going over, so if he was the last person why would he bid one dollar less than 1000 instead of one dollar more? One dollar less than 1000 only gave him 1 chance of winning at all, bidding one dollar more than 1000 would have gave him 200 chances of winning.
There's another video where a really stupid contestant wins in the Ten Chances game, and poor Bob just gets so frustrated with her...especially when she ends up winning!
