powerful words... Had same situation with my eldest who was 5 at the time... Son: "Why are you working all the time dad, how comes you cant play with me" Me: "I have to work son I'm sorry. I work all the time so I can provide for our family, so I can buy you guys things, so we can live in this house safely, so we can have food on our table and in our fridge, so we have running water, electric and heating. I'm sorry but in this world we have to work hard so that we can have a comfortable life and not struggle" My son shows acknowledgement of what I said and walks of as I turn around and get back to work Moments later he comes back... with his little money box... and says "Here dad, now you don't have to work" I nearly broke down in tears when he did that. I was absolutely blown away.

We went on vacation together as a family and interacted with him plenty. Anyway, long story short, I adore my father and now (I'm 21) we are closer than ever and I have come to appreciate what he did for us during my childhood. Again, I don't know I can just speculate. My Dad is a very hard worker and I always admired that but what I admired the most was that he’s turned down massive opportunities to be with us more because he said the life he already has with us was more valuable than any one that more money could buy him and I respected the heck out of him for it. As a single father that works full time, this message really hits a soft spot for me. There is always a certain amount of guilt I feel for not being able to spend more time with my son, which is magnified to some degree because of the added guilt of having to make up for his mother not being present. Its all a delicate balance of being an example of work ethic and day to day parenting. Showing your children that a father goes to work every day to provide for the family but also is around enough to answer all of the "but why?" and "how?" as well as build some legos from time to time. Thanks for the message!

And so hearing this, I believe I have my answer.

Thanks Pat for sharing. I used to work 7 days a week 98-04 to have what I wanted, provide for my family, buy a home and live life. The site shutdown, got two other trades for the next 4 years or so. Then started to build a career 10-16, and spent up to 5 nights away a week for that time. Guilt Then had a go at setting up a business 16-17 for work balance and no longer work for others. It didn’t work out, the unemployment between contracts got longer, meaning having to face the man in the mirror more. More guilt Mental breakdown of so much stuff avoided whilst I kept getting back up trying to be the example for my kids. Others close to me die, and have struggled to get back up for the last 4 years. Now looking at starting out again after losing it all, with once again helping others through myself, instead of supporting others in their mission. Now mine can align with theirs as a separate entity. That’s where I am at. Virtual hug. Thanks for leading the way and giving back.

I chose to open my house and Foster 30 children. I adopted 4 and I have 2 biological. A friend of mine in Alaska has foster over 100 children. There is zero regrets for the sacrifice commitment and daily grind that is not considered as glamorous, as a point made in this video. Of which I am in no way trying to minimize. We all have choices to make. The important thing is to have clarity about the choices one isn’t or is making. Thanks PBD for sharing your insights.

I’m a strong believer in this..there’s times I question myself..but I always remind myself why I’m doing it...I’m a believer that it’s not the time you spend at home or with your kids the makes the difference it’s..it’s the quality of time that makes the difference...I talk about this with my kids all the time I share my goals and dreams with them ..I tell them I don’t believe in excuses or that things are impossible as long as there is a will..I spend a lot of time away but the little time I’m home I make sure they count!!!🚛💨

Believe that if you want to playa. Your kids & wife want you home. Dont loose out on that quality time with your family chasing something thats printed everyday & looses value thru inflation.

In entrepreneurship, this is such a touchy subject on balancing working vs spending time with the family but the conclusion that you left off with was very good. Great video!

I just came across a paper my wife wrote of my then 6 year old daughters quotes. One was “I wish everyday was Saturday so mom and dad can spend all day with me.” God I would have loved nothing more! I was working 7 days a week 12 to 15 hours a day to make ends meet. My daughter learned how to walk when I was working in camp. We have a nice home, my daughter has been all over the world on vacations, we’ve given her the best life we could but if I could do it all over again I’d spend every minute with that precious child because they really do grow up so fast and then they’re gone. My daughter is still here but I’ll never see that beautiful 6 year old child again.

6:11 if you didn't feel the what he felt in this very moment you won't understand this is an amazing story , I can relate to this because I started my own business and alot of my time is consumed trying to make my business be consistent with income , I'm often drained and still.push myself beyond the tiredness to do what I have to do to provide and meet deadlines and beyond , I often ask myself that question the personal time with my kid or family vs personal sacrifice to attain something from nothing its a very strong topic nonetheless I do still push despite the pressures at time even being guilt tripped about not spending as much time with my kid I hope she gets to understand it one day as you did with your father, and I kid you not this bring tears to my eyes cause I do relate to it 9na significant level

It means the father doesn’t start thinking like the child. The child is too young to understand how important finances and business are. The child won’t actually want to be eating less. Nothing dramatic or emotional needed, maybe just a new career to stay home more. Priorities.

This "sacrifice to provide" concept only makes sense up to a point. Once you've made enough to keep your family fed, clothed, and comfortable, it is very likely more useful to them to have their father around more than to have more money.
