In her work as Prime Minister of Iceland, Katrín Jakobsdóttir integrates the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and its global goals into her life as well as policy-making. She describes how her experiences growing up have influenced her values and priorities as a politician. The global goals, also known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), touch every part of our lives, from what we all experience - education, health - to how we consume, how we live, where we work, and our environment. Good health and well-being are essential to achieve these goals, and are a priority for the Icelandic Government. The Prime Minister gives examples of how people’s health is supported across a range of initiatives and activities including health-promoting communities, where active transport, access to water, and healthy food are integrated into local services. Iceland also aims to be carbon-neutral, and Prime Minister Jakobsdóttir explains that ministries must lead by example, becoming carbon-neutral themselves to show accountability to their citizens. Achieving the ambitious Sustainable Development Agenda by 2030 requires everyone to contribute- the World Health Organization (WHO), politicians, the private sector, the public sector and individuals. Ultimately, the SDGs are about improving our daily lives, and Katrín Jakobsdóttir emphasizes that it is the responsibility of government to make these goals relevant to everyone.
