The Prince's Tale (Severus and Lily extended movie version)

This is the whole soundtrack that's being played during the scene 'The Prince's Tale'. It's just the 'Severus and Lily' theme combined with the 'Dumbledore's Farewell' track.
I don't own this music, it belongs to Alexandre Desplat and Nicholas Hooper.

No, Dumbleore isn't a master of Death. Dumbledore represents Death, the one who supposedly gave the brothers the hallows in the Tale of the Three Brothers.

No, read the book. When James Potter gave Dumbledore his invisibility cloak, he was shocked, excited and then he borrowed and examined the cloak from James. Dumbledore think that is just a story and the three brothers made the three deathly hallow themselves. Fucking hell...

Read a few interviews of JKR, or watch them if you prefer. Dumbledore represents Death, the character in the Tale of the Three Brothers. These three above are the "brothers", and Dumbledore is "Death". Yes, I've read the books, but I've also gone deeper into them. I wouldn't be surprised if the did make the hallows themselves, though with everything that goes on in the Wizarding World, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a guy with the last name of Death who was a powerful wizard and made these three things, then everything else played out and the tale was romanticized.

“But this is touching, Severus,” said Dumbledore seriously. “Have you grown to care for the boy, after all?” “For him?” shouted Snape. “Expecto Patronum!” From the tip of his wand burst the silver doe. She landed on the office floor, bounded once across the office, and soared out of the window. Dumbledore watched her fly away, and as her silvery glow faded he turned back to Snape, and his eyes were full of tears. “After all this time?” “Always,” said Snape.

dai m Serverus snape loves Lily Evans. He wishes for Dumbledoor to protect her from Voldemort. But it failed and she dies. After that he devotes his life to protecting her son "The boy who lived" (aka Harry Potter) For 17 years he acts like he hates Harry. In reality he watches him from afar saving him countless times. Protecting the by who has Her eyes but looks like his dad wich makes it especially hard on Snape because in his school days James Potter(Harry Potter father) Not only bullied Snape but also stole the love of his life Lily. They discover Harry is the chosen one. The only one who can defeat Voldemort. But he harry needs to die in the end aswell. Dumbledore tells this to Snape. Snape then goes. "So we raised the boy so he could die at the proper moment, You have been raising him like a pig for slaughter" Dumbledore replies with "Dont tell me now you have grown to care for the boy" Snape Shows his spell te patronus wich has an animal kind of shape. And its the same animal as Lily her patronus. They say if you love someyone alot you get the same patronus. So dembledore says "Lily? after all this time?" Asking Snape if he still loved her after all this time. he replied with Always

dai m It explains Snape's motive from the very beginning: he wanted to protect Harry because that was how he could give justice and avenge Lily's death. Snape felt guilty of Lily's death because he was the one who shared the prophecy to Voldemort, not knowing until later that it included Lily's child. He hated himself for the rest of his life and the only way he could bring at least a little bit of peace within himself is to do the what Lily would've wanted; to ensure Harry's safety. His patronus (silver doe just like Lily's) revealed the ultimate reason for his actions; his love for Lily. Dumbledore was shocked to have found out that even after 20 years, Lily was still the sole reason for everything Snape has done. Just like us and every other character in the series, Dumbledore also underestimated Snape's capacity to love/how much he loved Lily. Dumbledore couldn't belive that Snape's purpose of living for the past 20 years was all for Lily.

His life was no more or less tragic than Harry's, but they both made different choices and Harry ended up being happy in the end while Snape was always alone. Life isn't black and white, and neither are human beings. Snape took the best thing to happen to him - Lily - and he pushed her away, he let his ideologies cloud him from true happiness. Probably, his dysfunctional parents and their constant fighting are to blame. But the choices he made were his own. Everyone gets what they have coming to them.

No that is not true. Snape's fate was in part due to his mistakes but also because he got dealt a shit hand. He had terrible parents, he fell in love with the woman who would one day conceive a child that would destroy Voldemort, he suffered from depression due to bullying, His choices were his own but he did not manifest his fate, other people did.

“So the boy…the boy must die?” asked Snape quite calmly. “And Voldemort himself must do it, Severus. That is essential.” Another long silence. Then Snape said, “I thought…all these years…that we were protecting him for her. For Lily.” “We have protected him because it has been essential to teach him, to raise him, to let him try his strength,” said Dumbledore, his eyes still tight shut. “Meanwhile, the connection between them grows ever stronger, a parasitic growth: Sometimes I have thought he suspects it himself. If I know him, he will have arranged matters so that when he does set out to meet his death, it will truly mean the end of Voldemort.” Dumbledore opened his eyes. Snape looked horrified. “You have kept him alive so that he can die at the right moment?” “Don’t be shocked, Severus. How many men and women have you watched die?” “Lately, only those whom I could not save,” said Snape. He stood up. “You have used me.” “Meaning?” “I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter’s son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter--” “But this is touching, Severus,” said Dumbledore seriously. “Have you grown to care for the boy, after all?” “For him?” shouted Snape. “Expecto Patronum!” From the tip of his wand burst the silver doe: She landed on the office floor, bounded once across the office, and soared out of the window. Severus Snape's backstory was one of the most tragic of all the characters. He was raised by a horrid family and a father that beat him. He never had any friends even at Hogwarts. He was raised in a dark world and his only light. Was Lily. When he lost her, when she died, he also lost any good inside of him. He became bitter, full of resentment and the hatred controlled him. The only thing that kept him from turning completely evil was the Love he still held for Lily. That is what held his Loyalty in place. And he died still Loving her still loyal to HER.

But as soon as I realized that Snape was the one that saved harry from the enchanted broom in the first film I found myself to always root for the guy as a secret guardian, always protecting Harry from under covers and couldn't wrap my mind on him killing Dumbledore in the half blood prince until this scene came and I was relieved to see I wasn't wrong, although I was still less than right as he was much more than I thought.

The only thing that I hate is that Snape wasn't able to find FULL happiness in his life. He was always portrayed as someone evil. Yet, he had a kind heart....WHAT AN AMAZING PERSON!!
@apostolicaspie

I think all the wizarding world was confounded by Abraxas Malfoy as a way to gain power. Lucius maintained the confundus, and that's why Snape ruined his life and never recovered. It would also explain why the court of opinion about Harry was on a roller coaster, and why Dumbledore made his bad decisions.

No no no, he was a horrible man. He joined a terrorist group who aimed to kill muggleborns. He got upset when Lily didn't return his feelings. He stopped being friends with her, what, 5th or 6th year? I'm not exactly sure. He also tried to give Voldemort Harry and James in exchange for Lily. Then, he was an absolute dick to him in school, not to mention Neville's boggart. So no, he didn't deserve full happiness.
@sapphirevaltiel
@sapphirevaltiel 9 лет назад
Christy Plyler He was instrumental in Voldemort's demise by taking the greatest risks a man in his position could, ultimately dying to fulfill this purpose. That alone speaks of bravery and greatness out of this world. He never sold James and Harry for Lily, he asks Dumbledore and enslaves himself to him to protect all of them. About the rest you pointed out, I'll say as much as this: every great, amazing person has made mistakes and followed a dark path. It's only natural, for only that way we learn the righteous path and follow it by our own conviction, and not because we're told so.
@min-leemacdonald8859
@min-leemacdonald8859 9 лет назад
Christy Plyler He, technically, never stopped being friends with Lily, SHE stopped being friends with him. He's known for the phrase "Always" as in he Always loved Lily, Always cared for her, and Always tried to protect her. He wasn't originally going to join the Death Eaters but after his best and longest friend turned her back on him and basically said he WAS a Death Eater he felt he had no other options. After all if the woman you love won't see good in you what's the point? On to you're next point, "he got upset when Lily didn't return his feelings" well first of all he never actually confessed to Lily so either you're refering to him being upset that she BROKE OFF their 6+ years of friendship, or to him being upset that Lily started dating James. The same James that had been BULLYING Severus for years, that he owed a life debt to despite the fact that his life was only in danger due to Sirius-who was JAMES' friend. His anger was a little understandable. He did offer Voldemort Harry and James if he would spare Lily's life and while that may not be noble it was undoubtedly human, and not *evil*. Snape was desperate to save the woman that he loved, to save his oldest and dearest friend, if that meant giving up the man who constantly tormented him and their son (whom he had likely never seen and thus had no attachment to) so be it. He was a HORRBLE Teacher, that much is true but that didn't make him a horrible *man* and it should be stated that his "being a dick" was part of his cover, he was constantly trying to protect Harry from Book 1 all the way to 7, he always said he "hated Harry" because of his father, but in the 7th book we find out that Severus "Always" saw Lily in Harry, and thus didn't in fact hate him. He was brought to tears by the idea that "Lily Potter's son" would have to die to defeat Voldemort. As for Neville's bogart...how does fearing one's teacher make said teacher a Horrible Man? In the end Snape called Lily "mudblood" ONCE (and out of male pride more so than anything) and that caused his life to spiral out of control, despite this he still gave EVERYTHING he had to save Lily, and she still died! He could have called it quits but decided to continue with his spying all in the hopes of saving her son, who-after 16 years-he learns must die himself. So, yes, I think Snape deserved a little happiness.
@NoStressCrossfire

Min-lee MacDonald I think that it can be seen both ways. As in : he resented Harry because he made him think of James, plus of his failure regarding Lily, and that he just turned bitter because of it, and that he was a bastard. However, I'm more for the idea that he was just a man who was brought up in an abusive household, and who was despised by muggleborns and pureblood for opposite reasons, and that he just wasn't able to fit in all of this. The fact that he was bullied by people who were supposed to be good certainly didn't help. And regarding Harry, he still kept his promise and protected him until the very end, even he he wasn't kind to him (I think that's a mix of him needing to keep his DE cover, plus being resentful of James, and just being bitter because he had an awful life)

I was hoping that he was going to say "You have your mother's eyes" in the films. I was suprised that JK didn't include that part in the books, I think she had just written for Snape "Take them" meaning his liquid silver memories (or tears). When I watched the film I said it out loud, then he said it. I was so happy, but sad at the same time.

Don't kill me here but I never read all of the books until the 4th one and stopped. So when I went to the theaters and saw this scene. I was a mess, like a literal mess. I'm a huge sucker for tragic love stories and when I found out about snape's inner secret I was absolutely wordless. They portrayed the situation so well. The fact of how much pain and anguish snape must have been in, and to still wish for Harry's safety killed it for me.
@emlmm88
@emlmm88 10 лет назад
Read the books. They depict Snape in far more depth (and for that matter, every character in the series) than the movies do. You're missing out on some great moments if you haven't.
@Lazmiraa
@Lazmiraa 10 лет назад
emlmm88 But that's the joy of watching the movies first before novels. When you know everything that'll happen in the movie which has less lore than the books, you expect and know everything that'll happen. At least that's what happens to me. I'm much more of a visual person myself too. Not knowing what would happen though, and watching the action without the text was heart ripping. But on another positive note about watching a series before reading it is that as you've said. You get even more knowledge about the character in the books than when you watch it! :) So maybe at some point I will, because it's making me really want to!
@NYCBlonde

That's awesome you grasped the whole story. When I saw DH Part 2 I met some people standing on line who hadn't read the books and were al excited. We talked about HP a lot and then afterwards I ran into them (still tear-stained). They said they'd loved it but they had one question--why did Snape and Lily stop being friends? DHP2 left that out, or should I say they failed to hearken back to Snape's worst memory to make it clear that's why their friendship ended. Still a lovely sequence though. "Look at me..."
@emlmm88
@emlmm88 10 лет назад
Yea I mean there are advantages and disadvantages to both and I really think that for this particular series, the movies hold up totally on their own and many of the main moments (like Snapes death) I actually think are executed better in the films. Still, this is a universe that you need to really sink your teeth into to get completely, and for that I would definitely recommend reading the novels. I read all seven in 4 days once. That's how riveting they can be.
@biocapsule7311
@biocapsule7311 10 лет назад
Actually you can try the audiobooks if novels don't suit you, it's quite understandable to prefer watching before reading. And yes... definitely recommend books, not just because of Snape but also entire treatment of 'What really happen to Ariana Dumbledore'... which is also tragic. But the Prince's Tale is likely the best chapter... and as someone once mention (and I totally agree) J.K. wrote a better love story in just 1 chapter, than Stephenie Meyer in an entire series (and frankly better than most teen romances for that matter).

Why do people wonder why he became bitter? As a child: ignored and unloved As a teen: Bullied ruthlessly As an adult: A spy, a single person trusts him who he has to kill I don't think I could have gone through all that. EDIT: I posted that 5 years ago, last five years my life's been a rollercoaster and I've definitely had to "go through that." And no, I didn't turn out to be so bitter that I cause literal kids harm 😬 (also fuck jkr and trans rights ftw)

+Aayushi Dhiman I think you are ignoring a lot of things about Severus. He is an interesting character, but don't ignore the negative aspects to him. He was infatuated with dark magic (which was the primary reason for why the Marauders bullied him), he spent his time with people who wanted to kill mud bloods, joined Voldemort, only betrayed Voldemort once Lily died if that had not happened he would still be a loyal to Voldemort.

Mr33500 The reasons he became a bully and a death eater are stated above in the first comment. JKR explained in the books the reasons WHY he became so cruel toward Harry. He was a product of his environment and never received love except from lily. It doesn't excuse what he did, but at least we have an idea of what led him to be so shady.

Think about it. He casts the Patronus as a direct response to Dumbledore's ridicule. This is the very Patronus which helps Harry to find the Sword of Gryffindor. So yes, Snape absolutely does care for Harry, to the extent that he pains himself to think of the only woman who ever made him happy, in order to produce the Patronus which could lead Harry to a means to protect himself and to destroy the Horcruxes. Effectively, Snape casting the Patronus is a big "f*ck you" to Dumbledore. "Don't tell me you've grown to care for the boy." Snape's inner monologue is saying, "Yes, I do care. So much it hurts. So much that I think of his mother every day of my life. So much that I'll put myself through that torture a thousand times more if it means he survives." Snape cared very deeply for Harry. People don't realise that.

+Joseph Wagner Snape is not simple tragic hero, he is an anti hero. There is a subtle difference between the two, yet very crucial to understand character's arch. Both tragic and anti heroes are faced with a choice that would determine the rest of their lives. Now the difference is that tragic hero is doomed no matter what he decides to do, while anti hero choses poorly. And that is exactly what happened to Snape. He made wrong choice somewhere in his childhood which put him on different path than Lilly's and has ultimately severed the bond between them. And even though he kept loving her for the rest of his life, he was bound to suffer from the consequences of his one early mistake. He was trying to redeem himself ever since and he ultimately has achieved it in public opinion, yet I do not think he saw it that way in his final moments.

If Harry Potter taught me one thing, is to not judge a book by it's cover. Everyone thought Severus had a dark, evil cover. But no one ever questioned to read inside his book, because it showed he was just a kind heart-broken man.
@realjoemavro
@realjoemavro 10 лет назад
Well, you're mostly right. Snape was a tortured and brokenhearted man, but he was anything but kind for most of his adult life, he was in every way...a bully. Snape was an incredibly biased man who viewed all of the Gryffindor students (particularly Harry) as outlets for his negative feelings. He favored the Slytherins and saw presumably saw much of his younger self in Draco when he should have seen his younger self in Harry. Instead, he could only see a reincarnation of the boy who bullied him in his childhood and took every opportunity to spite him. It was a grudge he held onto until his last few moments of life, when something made him see Harry in another light.
@kysfallen1795
@kysfallen1795 9 лет назад
darkruler64 While I do agree that he treated Harry badly as a revenge for James being a bully to him, he favored Slytherins because he was Head of this house... McGonagall favored Gryffindor too, or are we forgetting how she had the Quidditch rules changed for Harry because she wanted her house to win the cup, for instance? He did not see his younger self in Draco. Young Snape was poor, timid, and a target for bullies like James Potter and Sirius Black. Draco was much closer to being James or Sirius than to being young Severus. Snape favored Draco from book 1 to 5 because 1) Draco is a prominent member of his house and 2) Draco is his godson, most likely Snape has been a family friend to the Malfoys for years. Plus Dumbledore and him likely always knew Voldemort would come back to life, and then Snape would have to be the spy again... the lie is more convincing, imo, if Snape keeps close ties to the Malfoys. In book 6, he "favors" him because he is supposed to help him succeed in killing Dumbledore (he made a Vow to Narcissa, and Dumbledore wanted him to make sure Draco wouldn't kill anyone else by accident in attempting to murder him), that's about it.

I almost laughed but given how the memories were cut and edited I could see how he would think that, I highly recommend reading the book chapter of this part though, theres a lot more to their story than what the movie skimmed over, including why Snape and Lily didn't grow closer than friends and which involved themes of choice and peer pressure from their respective houses, The overall idea of the story is there though in the film.

"When the falsk was full to the brim, and Snape looked as though there was no blood left in him, his grip on Harry's robes slackened. - Look...at....me...- he whispered. The green eyes found the black, but after a second, something in the depths of the dark pari seemed to vanish, leaving them fixed, blank, and empty. The hand holding Harry thudded to the floor, and Snape moved no more." In the book Snape died looking into Lily's eyes all the time. I have great respect for actors, but the rest... There are many changes, small and large, that make me think that these films are ok and acceptable, but I know that I will probably read the books for the rest of my life.

Snape was a very brave wizard and a great spy for Dumbledore, sure he might of been in Slytherin but he had the strength, the pride and the love from Gryffindor. He loved Lilly since he first met her and he was devastated and heart broken when she was murdered and he knew what he had to do. He had to protect her only son from Voldemort because he loved her and also was because Harry had his mothers eyes. He protected him right to the end until Nagini killed him and the last thing he said to Harry was "You have your mothers eyes" now that part got me and made me cry

To be openly hateful of someone you truly hate is easy. But to pretend to hate someone you are trying to protect, and to be silent about someone you have always loved, to serve a person you are helping to defeat and to have to kill the only person you can trust in - is incredibly heroic. Which is why Snape wins it in Harry Potter. He is the one who saves the world, ultimately. By sacrificing everything and owning nothing.

@Sangala Rachana I think Dumbledores plan was to get killes by Snape VOLUNTARILY. So when Snape kills him, he wouldn´t have defeated him, therefore no one would be master of the elder wand. Dumbledore never wanted Harry to go after the deathly hallows, at least in the books. But of course, Draco kind of screwed up.

The Gryffindor scarf in the background I think means a lot of things. He hated Gryffindors the most yet he loved a Gryffindor to the very end. He is a proud Slytherin yet many of his actions are so Gryffindor like.

Severus Snape's story is just WONDERFULLY made in the movie (i havent read that book yet) that I had to keep watching it to believe it was what really happened. I have always liked Snape , because I always knew that deep inside, he was never mean, he had just been through a lot of pain. he is and always will be one of my favorite characters. Also, this scene would be much less touching without this amazing music...ok now im crying

Rach A Yeah... I wonder if a bit of his resentment towards Hermione stems from the fact that she, in many ways, is like Lily, and she was hanging with Harry, James Potter's son and lookalike. I mean, Lily too was a gifted student, a know-it-all, a Gryffindor and Muggle-born.

There is an interesting theory that the three hallows had a weaker version. The veil in the ministry of magic is a gate to the world of the death but the dead cannot come back using it. (The stone) The pensieve allows you to go unnoticed but unable to change anything. (The cape) The mirror of Erised allow you to see what you want but never get it. (The wand)
