It is now the year 2020 as I type this, and this movie is still freaking amazing. So much so, a friend of mine that for nearly 21 years now (god I feel old)....avoided this movie.... finally watched it.... And it blew his mind. He absolutely found it funny as hell. To top that off, he realizes how much this movie makes fun of Trek, while also being a good, funny movie... and he has now become a Trek fan too thanks to Start Trek: Picard, and this movie. To me, a person that has been a Trek fan since 1987, this is epic because now I can talk about 33 years of backstory to someone that used to have his eyes glaze over when it came to Star Trek.

I love everything you said - this is one of my favorite movies! One cannot be a sci-fi fan and not love this movie. But you missed the best line of the movie: Sigorney Weaver’s “we gotta get out of here before they kill Guy!” so perfectly captures what they believe about their reality, as it comes out subconsciously after actively denying Guy’s redshirt freak out.
@Twystedsyxx
@Twystedsyxx 5 лет назад
Can we talk about the fact that the Thermian's exposition of why they appeared as humanoid explained the reason for Roddenberry's reason for using humanoid aliens in Star Trek, if that universe actually existed? It was the first thing I noticed. Don't want to freak the humans out? Change your appearance to match theirs. It was the first time I realized that Star Trek aliens may not actually look as they appear on screen. changed my life. Lol
@mattheww885
@mattheww885 4 года назад
Actually, the in-universe reason for so many humanoids in Star Trek is brought up in TOS and TNG: there was an ancient race who 'seeded' various planets with their DNA (as at that time, the galaxy was mostly empty of life), so most of the species we see share a very distant common ancestry. Kind of lame, but there you are. I'd like to think at least some of the races do edit their appearance somewhat for whatever reason, making it easier to navigate a universe full of humanoids, like the Breen could be lil worms in humanoid suits or something.

They made a retrospective documentary of Galaxy Quest recently. I think my favorite part of the trailer for the documentary is Brent Spiner talking about how he wished the cast of Next Gen had done that movie instead of Tim Allen, and then they had a bearded lumberjack looking Wil Wheaton say that Galaxy Quest is hands down the best Star Trek movie. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-39cVvN28UXE.html&feature=emb_logo

Also, I have to mention that at the beginning you are laughing at the characters' failures. At the end you're laughing as they succeed. That can only happen if you're invested in the characters and their interior life.

Hey Mikey, I must admit, your RU-vid show is such a breath of fresh air. It’s truly amazing. Not only do I share a love of your favourite movies, a common perception which makes me feel like I know you, but by listening to your analysis of these movies it makes me remember why I loved them in the first place. It makes me realize what was so good about these movies that they became a part of mental library of taste. Why they became artifacts of self identification. My personal bookshelf of cool. I think you have a grasp on empathy far greater than most people. And Im sure this empathy has caused you a great deal of pain and discomfort in your life. But you use this empathy as a gift to share your understanding of the human condition with the world that is so sorely needed. You show us why our contemporary art is more than comic book films and space shows. You teach what it is to communicate effectively and why that is so important. This afternoon while standing in line for lunch (I was keeping social distance) I was watching your video on Creed and came to a moment where the content of your video, well, the only way to put it is, uhm, it broke me. I had a hard, instant adult silent cry. And so while waiting in line I had to hide my face and increase my social distance so others wouldn’t see me in this moment of vulnerability. Your video did this to me. It’s an amazing talent to get that kind of a reaction out of someone. And it was a reaction. Out the blue. I had no lingering depression hanging around, no sadness or internal conflict/strife. I was just waiting on some fries. So thanks for putting your talents to work so we can all see the world thru your eyes. Because you see the world beautifully, sadly, dangerously, and most importantly, you see the world honestly. And nothing is more important. Thanks. Peace

I didn't know this movie existed until I saw it in a friend's DVD collection and asked him: "what's this?" He was in shock, tried to describe a few scenes through his laughter, couldn't, so he went to his plan "b" of: "dude, just watch it, you won't be disappointed!".....I've never known him to be more correct in his life. Too bad the marketing for it was so poor, I think this movie could have done some really big numbers while it was in theaters.

Thanks for another great review and cinematic dissection. Something I only fairly recently realized about this film: the design of the "NSEA Protector" evoke's Star Trek's "Enterprise" by both emulating it (the large tubular central hull with a sensor dish in the front and the bridge on top) and inverting it (rather than a pair of thin straight struts leading upward to large nacelles, there's wide curved struts leading back to small pods). It's a rather clever bit of design that distances itself from the inspiration yet also invokes it.

The registry number, like NCC-1701 USS Enterprise, the 1701st Naval Construction Craft, the NTE-3120 in front of NSEA Protector was said to just stand for Not The Enterprise by the cast and crew during development.

Gotta say: love your definition of a classic comedy. _Galaxy Quest_ is a perennial favourite of mine, watched it heaps of times and will watch it again. Not only is it a brilliant _fish out of water_ story - for which I have quite the soft spot - the humour is brilliant (as you say, timeless) and the acting, directing and cinematography are all superb. And yeah, I teared up when "Dr Lazarus" said his iconic (and despised) catch-phrase in all sincerity to the fan that viewed him as a father figure.

You hit the key point with spoof comedy in general: so many spoof comedies assume that they don't have to build situations with real consequences or do any serious character development. Comedy is so much more effective when it's also just a regular story, and follows the rules of regular storytelling.

Love this movie, another criminally underrated gem. I can't say, though, that i ever came away with the impression that Jason was responsible for the destruction of the Thermian planet. While it's true that the timing is never established, there's simply no time between the two events. Jason fires the cannons, they goop him home, he goes to the store opening, and the crew is beamed back to the ship basically right away, still in costume. This is a matter of hours *at most* and not likely to involve planet destroying. Plus, the Protector crew was well aware of Sarris' deception and cruelty. It implied that he had been terrorizing the Thermians for a long time, and the Protector crew were the last fleeing survivors of a doomed race.

Mikeeeeeeyyyy, I love this movie and I love this video and I love you for making it. Nicely done! I LARGELY agree with what you said about what makes for a classic comedy, though I disagree with you lumping 40 Year Old Virgin into the non-classic category. I've returned to that movie lots of times because: A) the improv style of the comedy is timeless in its own way. It's funny people having fun in consistently funny ways, which taps into that empathic delight response. Even the non-improv comedy is funnier than the average comedy, tho (I think). B) the movie has real stakes and turns out to be way more than just a one-note joke about a 40 year old dude who doesn't have sex. He turns out to be a real character with a complex psychology, and the real focus of the humor ends up being how messed up all the so-called "normal" people in the movie are, with the Carell character being the most balanced and healthy of them, even in his self-imposed repression. I feel like that movie really sets you up to expect something one-note and ends up being a multi-faceted exploration of relationships and how our personal baggage tends to affect them. It's a true "relationship comedy" not just a romantic comedy. Knocked Up, on the other hand, is mostly humor focussed around how this one guy knocked up this one chick and it made their lives difficult. Still not terrible, but decidedly less insightful, and way less universal. So, yeah... I think 40 Year Old Virgin absolutely earns its spot on the classic comedy lists. Anyway, can't wait to see your Interstellar video!!

In the same sense that Wild, Wild West was great, but a lot of the humour only works on the first viewing and gets stale on the second watch. I mean, sure, they are a fun watch a few times, every now and then, but not really "classic" material. For instance, Evolution constantly switches between taking itself too seriously(when it needs to advance the story) or not at all(when it needs to deliver comedy). The characters themselves are not what makes the movie funny(except for the 2 boneheads, but they are designed with that in mind and it wouldnt work if every character was like that), but the "weird stuff" that happens to them. As a result, I can remember quite a few of the funny moments from Evolution, but have no memory of the characters names or the characters personalities. Galaxy Quest is a parody movie in the same vein as most of Mel Brooks parody movies. People can still watch them and enjoy them to this day, due to good humour, good script, a love and respect for the material it parodies and solid acting. You feel that these are plausible characters with plausible problems, which are then set in a very peculiar situation. We actually have character arcs(for multiple characters) compared to the typical 1-dimensional characters in most parody/satire comedies. That is also why Tropic Thunder is a great parody movie. It works along very similar lines as Galaxy Quest and Mel Brooks movies.

@@NSMike87 And the film is all the better for it. It's SO obvious and blatant that it might as well break the fourth wall, and in a film with its tongue so firmly in its cheek it bores through, it works very well.

On the DVD commentary, this movie was a spec script that a studio liked and bought. The directors told the actors to play it straight so even though they were making a comedy all the actors played normal PEOPLE in an outrageous situation which made it so funny and which I think adds to the staying power. In addition, Tony shaloob was given very little direction to his character, I remember from the commentary, he said that his character was a brown paper bag, and in one scene you can actually see him holding one, the scene where they're rolling the sphere thing back to the transporter

Another excellent installment. Wonderful insights into the greatest Star Trek movie ever made. I particularly enjoyed thinking about how the "actors" have almost the polar opposite qualities of in-universe characters they portrayed. So cool! You helped me appreciate one of my favorite movies even more, which I would not have thought possible. Thank you, sir. Annnnnnnd of course the month I finally catch the video the day it's posted there isn't any voting. For what it's worth, I would *love* to hear your thoughts on Creed! Personally I think it succeeded in reinventing and rebooting a series in the most fantastic way imaginable, but I do tend a bit toward hyperbole.

@@mvmusic8467 yeah and he was wrong. It's got nothing in common with star wars. It's all a star trek and trekkie culture satire. Star wars and star trek are not even the same genre, they don't have a lot in common apart from the space setting
@OgYokYok
@OgYokYok 4 года назад
duffman18 yeah aside from space there’s nothing the same. Well, there’s an evil space federation or something so I guess that’s like the empire but aside from space and the empire, it’s all the same. Well, there’s the thermians and although their ship is like the enterprise, they’re more of the rebellion in the movie. They even got their planet blown up like Alderaan, so aside from space, the empire, the rebellion and Alderaan, they’re nothing alike. I must agree. Oh wait, there’s a reluctant hero of humble beginnings thrust into a universe larger than any they’ve known...

I'm surprised how many missed this in theaters when I bring it up. I was in high school when it came out and I pretty much washed it at least once or twice a year with my folks while I was still under their roof. Though my buddies and me still will quote evolution. We enjoyed it
