Jennifer- Im 63 and have been a housewife for 45 years. No children. Just me and my wonderful hubby. Ive never worked outside the home. Never. When people (mostly women) hear this, I get reactions from pity to jealousy! I totally agree that you can develop your mind while stirring the jam or any of your daily household chores. Listen to books on tape, learn a new language, memorize poetry, enjoy classical music (or any type of music you like). Ive been truly blessed! At a pool party last summer a couple of the wives there joked that I "didnt have a life"...I spoke up and said, "On the contrary Ive lived EVERY minute of my life. Never punching a time clock, commuting in traffic, dealing with schedules or unhappy co-workers. Every morning I wake up (naturally, no alarm clock) and hubby asks, "What are you going to do today?" and I always answer (its one of our silly jokes)..."Anything I want"...He's an old fashioned guy who likes the traditional husband-wife roles. I will look for the Tasha Tudor book at our library.

Hi, Lisa. I loved your comment to Jennifer. I cherish being at home as well, in fact, my husband and I were just discussing that this morning. We both love the care we take of our home and our lives. I would so enjoy talking with you further, Is there a way we can do that?

Oh Lisa, I got tears reading your comment. It made me so happy to hear about you and your husband talking about what you plan to do each day. I have been married to my beloved husband for nearly 15 years and together we have 9 children. When my husband is asked what I will “do” when the children “finally grow up” (we homeschool and my children are aged 13 and under) he tells people “whatever she wants”. We privately joke that I’m already doing what I want....I’ve just got a lot of company each day haha! Thank you for sharing about Tasha, Jennifer.

I got to tour Tasha's home and gardens in 2013. It was magnificent! Being in her kitchen, seeing the table were she did her art, walking around her gardens and in her barn. Her son Seth, his wife Majorie and their son Winslow, who took us on tour, were all there. It was a magical day that I will always treasure!

We may have been on the same tour Audrey...lol. I too went on a house/garden tour at Tasha’s, as well as 2005 when I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to meet Tasha...a time I’ll never forget. I also went again in 2008, the summer she passed away. Broken-hearted, I toured her lovely house and gardens. I know what you mean about seeing her table, and being in her kitchen, etc. it was magical and almost surreal ❤️

I’ve recently become acquainted with her and she’s wonderfully interesting/ understated. Her cottage life is like the summer country homes that were occupied by prominent/ well to do gentry in Europe. Tasha Tudor moved forward by stepping back in time. She’s also become an unintended muse for many women at present time who are returning to a similar manual lifestyle/ house and garden.... she’s very popular with Korean vloggers who have turned to the same style of dress/life, including re-inventing her recipes. The peasant/ summer linen dresses, skirts outfits are making a trending come back with designers, even the cotton smock dress under garments.

Long time viewer, first time commenter. The more videos I watch, the more I realize that you are truly a "kindred spirit". Love your videos and your platform. I am a Christian and recent full time homemaker, former homeschool mom, children are now grown, and lover of all things victorian. I actually just bought a 1907 home (Edwardian by year but still very Victorian). I love reading, tea, beautiful China, cooking, Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (A&E version), Anne of Green Gables books and movies, the Royals and so much more. And of course, love your books! I found you several years ago when I was looking into a capsule wardrobe. I've been a faithful follower since. Keep up the great work. You're making a difference. You're a light!

the Daily Connoisseur , I think I should mention that I'm 43. When people mention grown kids in recent times the thought is always a more "mature" person. I married at 19, six months later became pregnant with first child, daughter Ashten and had her at 20. 9 months later became pregnant with my son, Gabriel. Had him at 21. I was 39 when he graduated. My first grandchild was born this past November, which is the reason I recently moved, to get closer to my grand baby. And a victorian home makes a perfect "Nenny" house. So yes, I am 43 and a grandmother and loving it!

Wow! Where do I begin! I loved the comments about women dressing as women, enjoying the art of homemaking and the quote by Thoreau, which is on my refrigerator. Tasha Tudor and you, I might add, are right on target about how wonderful being a homemaker can be. Society thinks that unless you have a high power career as a woman, you are nothing. I have heard comments that stay at home moms don't have any ambition. I think the opposite. Stay at home moms (or part time moms like myself- I am a single mom) value raising children even if it requires sacrifice. We need to let our children know that they are worthy of our time and more important than things money can buy. Creating a beautiful home environment benefits the souls of our family members and is the way our Lord would like us to live. We need to focus on the simple pleasures of gardening, a home cooked meal, reading and also enjoying the beautiful world around us as a gift from God to enjoy. Beautiful video Jennifer. You are a blessing, and inspiration and once again I will say, the depiction of a "Proverbs 31 woman." Blessings to you and your family.

I too am a Tasha Tudor fan and have been for many years. I teach preschool and have read many of her books to many classes. I especially enjoy her illustrations of Corgi’s. Whatever it is that you love, share your passion with your children through books. They will pick up on your enthusiasm which makes learning more enjoyable. By the way, at the end of each year, I bring our pet Corgi named Albert into the classroom for the children to meet. It’s a page out of a book which comes to life! Magic!!

Have to agree with her about long skirts being flattering for lots of women. I have given up on skirts above the knee because they just aren't flattering on me and make me self conscious when I sit down. In summer it is such a joy to swish around in a lovely, long maxi dress.

My 92 year old mother gave me this book as a gift about ten years ago. Unfortunately, we had a molds situation and it had to be disposed of. I found I could not live without it, and finally found another copy used. It has been a staple on my bookshelf and when I find myself anxious or hurried, I take it down and looking at the pictures is like going on a vacation, so calming! I have also since given copies away ( when I can find them) to others, who also have fallen in love with this gem of a book as I have!

There was a book store we used to go to and I remember distinctly when they got this book in. I would sit and look at it anytime we were there. I remember it was $32 (and much out of my or my parents price range, as baby 7 of 10 was on the way) and I just bought a used copy for myself last year, and the amazing bargain of $3.99. One of my treasures! My “trivia” so to speak, is about a book she illustrated called The Real Pretend. The lady who wrote it was featured in a home schooling magazine my mom used to get and I read and reread her Day in the life article over and over as she and her husband and their adopted sons lived a similar life to Tasha. Fast forward 5+ years and we were visiting a historic village for a homeschool field trip. Something about a family we passed seamed vaguely familiar, and I chased them down in the gift shop to ask if she had written The Real Pretend. She was absolutely flabbergasted that I had put together who she was and recognized her from such an old magazine article. So that was my “brush with Tasha”.

When you mentioned Tasha Tudor's book in an earlier video, I got it from the library. I had read that book many years ago and other things by her and about her. The book is beautiful and romantic but there is a side to her life that not everyone thinks about. She worked very, very hard. She cooked over a wood stove, she had a vegetable garden and did her canning over that wood stove. Can you imagine that, in the summer, the heat produced by the hours of cooking that canning involves. Not to mention the work involved in bringing in the wood, I would suppose she bought wood from someone, did not go to the woods herself to cut trees down, split them into smaller pieces, etc. But still there is a massive amount of work to heat your house and cook with wood. The hours caring for the animals, the hours with the spinning wheel and the loom. In our modern culture it is almost unfathomable all the work involved. And in the midst of all of that she was writing those books to earn her living. Even if you think her ideas of having lived a previous life in an earlier time are odd, you have to admire the woman for her hard work, her creativity, for her unrelenting drive to move toward her dreams and live them. I love when you review books, thanks for this video.

@@TheDailyConnoisseur My grandma actually lives like that even today. She has a wood stove, my brother helps her and buy wood from forest then split it to smaller pieces so she can cook on it the whole year. Every day she brings the wood to the kitchen by herself. Of course, she owns a gas stove as well but rarely uses it. She has goats, rabbits, pigs, chickens and 2 cats, huge garden, cooks every day and I have never in my life heard her complaining about it or mentioning how tired she is from doing this mundane work every single day. BTW she is 76 years old and my big role model. Thank you Jennifer for this beautiful video. I had to appreciate my childhood spent with my grandma. You are one of the kind on the internet!

Today it is illegal (in most US states) to go into the woods and cut firewood without a permit . My husband gets a permit in Arizona that is very specific on what wood and how much you are allowed to cut and gather. It only costs a few dollars but is hard work.

Finished the Tasha Tudor book, made my tea this afternoon and just enjoyed your video while drinking it. The book was like a breath of fresh air, filled with subtle insights and blunt opinions (refreshing), laughter, and inspiration. I sent a screenshot to my sister of this quote, which we both thought amusing. “If you say you’ll do something, then you’ve got to do it. Nor do you lie. Sometimes, however, to get out of unpleasant visits and such, you can handle the truth lightly.” 😀. I agreed with all the points you brought up as well. Thanks, Jennifer!

You did a superb job of highlighting/reviewing this book, Jennifer! I could go on and on with comments, but I will try to be brief and answer your questions! Regarding favorite flower~when we lived in S. California I had over 38 rose bushes (followed Tasha’s advice without knowing it) and had cut roses bouquets on my table every month except December (when I pruned them) until early February when they burst into bloom again! That must indicate my favorite. 😊 After moving to Central Oregon (high desert, with cold winters) I favor anything that dear do not eat!! They also adore roses, especially the tender buds! I have developed an appreciation for lavender, peonies, delphinium, and lupin (which the previous owners planted in abundance in our yard and they make a flamboyant welcome to spring.) I have watched “Anne of Green Gables” and I am currently reading the book. Thank you for your loveliness and your hard work to enhance our days.

I have always enjoyed Tasha Tudor's illustrations and it was interesting to learn more about her as a person. I particularly liked the points about femininity and using the best you have. The Thoreau quote was beautiful! Thanks for sharing.

I also loved Victoria magazine!! I love the simple life Tasha Tudor. Another author illustrator that came to my mind was Marguerite De Angeli. Thee, Hannah is one her books about a Quacker girl during civil war. She had much the same style as Tasha.

wow.... you are the first person I have heard who knows of the Avonlee series... this was my absolute favorite of all time. It transports me to a world where every little girl resides in her heart. The homes, gardens , clothes and relationships are all so charming. I also have 4 books about Tasha Tudor and love to get lost in them on a cozy winter day with a cup of something warm and a soft quilt

Is this book still in print? Because oh my goodness it speaks to my soul! So much wisdom in just the few minutes you reviewed this book. I think in an age where all we are presented with on social media is the jet setting and glamor,we forget that the vast majority of people are just living their lives in an “unglamorous” way. Not everyone is lucky enough to do their dream job, and that is okay. We can go earn a living and come home and within the home cultivate this beautiful life. This year I am being VERY intentional about this; the children aren’t watching tv for the most part, housecleaning is on a schedule so there is more time to live and enjoy life, and my husband and I are very particular with the engagements we say yes to; the time we have with each other and the children are just too precious to just let go for any old reason. We need a world of afternoons on the porch with tea and conversation, of getting dirt under our nails in the garden, of Sunday dinners and bedtime stories, and trips to the museums! Tasha understood the importance of all this. And truth be told, if I could, I would DEFINITELY be a homemaker It’s a beautiful and honorable profession to create a home and raise the next generation. It was so nice to hear you talk about Anne of Green Gables and Avonlea! I absolutely adore the Anne Shirley books, I loved the movie( I own it on DVD LOL) and when I was a child I was obsessed with the show Road to Avonlea! It left such a mark on me that one of my bucket list destinations is Prince Edward Island. Can’t wait for your next video! Hugs from the Midwest!

When I was about 12, I lived not far from Tasha's very best friend, in Ohio. Through a series of events, Tasha's friend brought me one of Tasha's Netherland Dwarf rabbits from Vermont and gave it to me. It will always be a special memory of my childhood and I sent Tasha Tudor a thank-you note. She kindly replied with a note, in which she carefully explained that she was not what modern folks refer to as a "pen pal". True to her word, I only received one letter from her. But it is a treasured possession of mine.

Jennifer!! I can’t believe you just mentioned Victoria! I was obsessed with this periodical throughout the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Yes, it’s lovely now, but it’s just not the same as it was back then. It seemed more effortlessly, subtly glamorous in its prime (now, to me, it feels a bit forced). I just LOVE that you know this magazine and have loved it as I do! I have a collection from the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s of my favorite editions❤️

Going through your older post and this one about Tasha Tudor came up... When Victoria Magazine first was published... the first edition was on Anne of Green Gables. Just a little Trivia but they did a great post on Tasha and her quote about painting and writing to keep the wolf from the door has echoed in my thoughts for over 40yrs. I determined then, that being economical was something I could do as a stay at home mum in those yrs, but do it while cultivating beauty and grace in our home. I sewed my children's clothes and did embellishments on them that surprised me with the way they looked in style and distinction of a designer garment.... as well as lit candles for every evening meal. My crew suddenly felt it was a special time, everyone spoke in quieter more hushed tones and politely waited for each other to finish what they were saying before taking their turn to share everything from giggles and gasps, to stories and tears. We were maybe to home centred in some people's views but our 3 grown children are now married with children of their own that they are all cultivating family memories and experiences for.. I am blessed and proud (in the good way).

Hi Jennifer! I have had this video on my "watch later" list for ages. It's a beautiful, rainy spring morning here in my neck of the woods, and with the current quarantine, I am loving the chance to catch up on some of these long-neglected things. I have appreciated Tasha Tudor and her lifestyle for many years, ever since I stumbled across her book about heirloom crafts in our public library. I renewed the book 6 times, and finally asked my husband to purchase a copy for me for my personal collection. It is now sitting in a place of honor on my bookshelf, dog-eared and worn. How I have loved that book. Therefore, it must be said that I thoroughly enjoyed your review of a different book of hers. I will (most likely) ask my husband for a copy of this one to add to my collection! Blessings!

Also, if I may, suggest a book for you? It’s titled Mrs. Sharp’s Traditions: Reviving Victorian Family Celebrations of Comfort and Joy. I have read this book cover to cover and simply find it wonderful and inspiring. Perhaps you may also enjoy it and do a video on your impressions as well as some ideas you have or discovered for family traditions? I think it is so important for families to be making memories together whether or not they are Victorian inspired. This book just gives so many great ideas in my opinion.

I love this! I used to read Victoria in the 90's and definitely know who Tasha Tudor is! When I was 10, my great-aunt gave me one of my favorite birthday presents of all time--a hard copy of Frances Hodgson Burnett's "A Little Princess" with beautiful color illustrations by guess who?! It is a wonderful book for girls, I believe that version is out of print though. On a side note, Avonlea was one of our family favorites! We watched all of them via Netflix dvds or the library.. can't remember, but we were sad when it ended! Loved it because it had great storylines and was family-friendly. Ok, on to your next video... I have some catching-up to do! Have a wonderful day!

Dear Jennifer, You are a kindred spirit! Thank you for another delightful video. I enjoyed meeting Tasha Tudor. When I was a girl, I too, read all of Lucy Maud Montgomery's wonderful books. I can relate to watching and memorizing the Anne of Green Gables films and the Road to Avonlea series. Those books shaped my career path as a teacher. Little Women and the Secret Garden are also amongst my favorites. Your videos and commentary are refreshing to listen to. Thank you for the beauty you contribute through your channel. God bless you. This was such a delight - thank you Jennifer! I've been a fan of Tasha's for many years loving her beautifully illustrated children's books and charmed by her way of life. You would also like the book her daughter wrote about Tasha's life including the unique, imaginative childhood she gave her children. The book is called "Drawn from New England" by Bethany Tudor.
