Gating reverb is also a great solution to this! But getting the settings of the gate just right can be a bit hard and depending on what you want you might have to end up automating stuff still, so I often like just sticking to automation. I do use gated reverb on a fair few things though, particularly on drums!

This definitely works, but I personally don't like having it as another track. It also can be a pain if you want to change something about the vocal. But it's a good option!

@@matttinklermusic Well I was just going to point out how useful the effect rack is because it allows you to process the wet signal on its own afterwards however you'd like. Sure, you can do the same thing with a return track but this is by far the best option for if you need to process the wet signal for just one element of the mix (e.g. adding compression to just the wet reverb signal from the vocal). And of course it allows you to run as many things in parallel as you want (e.g. take a signal and create an effect rack with the dry signal, 100% wet compressed signal, 100% wet reverb, 100% wet compressed reverb, etc) you can just keep going until your daw crashes! 😂

If you wanted a gated effect then yes that would work, but the utility allows you just alter the level.

I'll admit the clickbait title and thumbnail here 😂 That said, this is a much better method than a return track because you can use it only for a single track only and not have to take up one of your return track slots (of which you can only have 12 in Live). I automate device on and off all the time, but doing that can cause some issues depending on what you want to achieve. Also this really doesn't take long to set up, you can do it it probably 30 seconds and end up with much more control than you would otherwise. Give it a try and you might find it to be super useful! @@matttinklermusic if you take into account what the actual purpose of a reverb is used for and how it fits into a mix stylistically and sonically using a return is much more effective since youre trying to simulate a space rather than accentuate one thing, plus the more often you do this the more CPU resources you end up using, albeit Audio Effect Racks are really cool and nice to use in certain cases, And I think your mistaking control for a placebo effect, youre doing the same exact thing plus very rarely does anyone use more than the 12 return tracks they provide I do professional mixes in pro tools and I've never had to use more than 4. For the sake of making actual useful techniques, don't try and remake the wheel unless its actually gonna make be significant improvement to a producer or engineers workflow

The use of reverb is totally contextual. In electronic music production it's incredibly common to have slightly different reverbs on every track, making it a waste of resources to use a return track rather than putting different reverbs on every track. If you're making a song with over 100 tracks (something I do rather regularly), and putting reverb instances on most of these (again pretty common), then you pretty quickly use up all of your returns. Although reverb might be 'supposed' to be used to simulate a space rather than accentuate a single element, there are a lot of instances where this simply isn't the case. In terms of control, I personally find it quite useful to have an independent dry and wet control, rather than a dry/wet balance, which the effect rack option offers. There are plenty of plugins out there that offer the same, and this offers a solution to that 'problem', whilst also offering a way to gain control over the amount of signal sent to a device, which can be incredibly useful for creating things like reverb and delay throws. In effect the technique shown in the video is a way of creating a return track with a 'send' control, but as an insert rather then using up a return track, which is something I often reserve for effects I use on more than a single track (which I use often when mixing vocals). It's all about workflow, and personally this helps mine and I know there are many others whose workflow has been helped by it too, so I wanted to share it! :) I take full responsibility for the clickbait-y title and thumbnail though, I'm experimenting with these whilst I try and grow the channel.
