[Conversations with Dr. Westman: Episode 66]
Sugar alcohols -- few topics generate as much controversy as this one!
First, what are sugar alcohols? They're compounds that lend sweetness to foods and beverages but they're not the same as regular sugar. You can recognize them on labels by words that end in "-itol": mannitol, maltitol, sorbitol, xylitol, and erythritol.
So why (if at all) is there a problem with them?

The problem with life is that it's fatal--everybody dies. We all need to do our own personal keto as well as we can because there are always judgmental perfectionists who will scold us for not doing our keto as well as they do it. I'm satisfied with how I do keto, have lost a lot of weight and enjoyed many health benefits as a result.
@Nicole-xd1uj

I agree with you and congrats on your good health results. I'm experiencing the same good benefits while still enjoying my favorite erythritol sweetened treat most days. These nebulous 'it might not be healthy' warnings seem a bit cultish to me.

Most commercial sugar-free candy has lots of maltitol. I’m a type 1 diabetic and it definitely raises my blood glucose. In big amounts there’s also the laxative effect…

I've never had sugar alcohols, nor do I intend to try them. I'll stick to single ingredient whole foods, and the highest quality of those I can afford.

In many "keto-friendly" prepared foods it is not just the carbs or the sugar alcohols but other ingredients that may cause problems too for the gut - like emulsifiers and preservatives. Since digestion begins in the mouth and is controlled by the brain, the sweet taste may release amylase which in turn may also trigger an insulin response. For me, this caused a migraine followed by a severe headache that sent me to the ER recently. Moderation would seem to be the wisest choice.

Every time I have any type of sweetener, it throws me out of Ketosis within an hour and it's hard to get back.
@machinized
@machinized 2 года назад
I could say, that none of those sweeteners can replace regular sugar in taste. Nor sugar alcohols, nor stevia, etc. Its best just to quit sugar, after some time you do not really need sweet taste. Personally, I do tons of spicy food and it perfectly replaces sugar effect. Even if I bake some keto desert - I use no sweeteners. Of course, nobody else is able to eat that except for me, but for me - I can feel the natural flavours of ingredients and natural sugars and there is enough sweetness for me. This is how taste feeling changes when you give up on added sugar. Took me 3 years tough to get to this point.
@montycora

I personally avoid aspartame. Other than that I find sugar sweetners are fine in moderation. Like you said the FIRST priority is getting rid of sugar (white, brown, cane, "organic" or not, honey, agave) then you can remove sugar substitutes if you want to but it's not required for Keto.

I have cravings, too. I have been wondering if food is like music. It brings back positive thoughts and emotions from the past. For example, I remember sitting on my grandmother's lap on an enclosed porch, watching a thunderstorm at night and she would bake cinnamon rolls, letting me stay up late to have one. Or, the music playing the first time I danced with my wife of 50 years. "Whiter Shade of Pale"

@@tmcche7881 Memories of good times with food do affect the endorphins in the brain. We naturally want to recreate that sensation and recover that good feeling. I have a lot of memories of my grandmother and my mother's cooking. Though a lot of it is not within the keto lifestyle I live nowadays. I have learned to question myself as to whether I am really hungry (like would I eat a steak) rather than pigging out on some cookies or bread. If the answer is cookies or bread then I know it is a craving not true hunger. It comes down to retraining your brain to think differently.
@arlenewitt248

I don’t know as if my memories of my grandmother and the food she served creating warm memories, are a trigger for me. For instance, I absolutely loved going to her house and eating her fried okra and her fried chicken. However, try as I might, and I’m not a bad cook, I cannot re-create either of those dishes and end up with a dish as good as hers. I suspect this is because she’s not here to share it with me, so the memory is never complete.

I have bought various sweetners and I check the carbs on the back of the packet. I was surprised that one product that I bought had 100gms of carbs per 100 grams of sweetener. 😬. I now check very carefully when buying sweetener and I have found a brand that has no carbs at all. It pays to check the nutritional information and not just stick it in the shopping cart.😀

I always have a good electrolyte powder (no sugar or nasty preservatives) that I take daily and I salt my food liberally and it gives me that extra jolt of energy when I’m feeling off. Remember your body loses a lot of water retention on a keto diet and there’s a lot of sodium chloride in that water that gets depleted in your body which causes your blood pressure to drop easily and that’s when you start feeling light headed and dizzy and just plain sluggish.
