[Conversations with Dr. Westman: Episode 31]
The dairy dilemma!
One of the nicest things about the keto diets is that you can enjoy rich and creamy foods that are usually off-limits on other diet plans because of their high fat content. (Butter, cheese, heavy cream) -- we celebrate these healthy high-fat foods on keto, but... does that mean you can have unlimited amounts of fat and still get results? Watch this video to find out more!

dairy helped to adapt my palate away from sugary carbs towards protein-heavy meals... it's also very affordable and requires no cooking... i dont know how many times I was saved from relapsing with carbs by just cutting a thick slice of cheddar cheese that would fill me up pretty well ... I don't eat it as much now because I like keeping my pantry simple, but I'm not scared of it either
@billyt9921
@billyt9921 2 года назад
If a diet is too restrictive, people won't stick to it. Removing all appreciable carbs is quite difficult but manageable. It is made infinitely more doable by increasing your intake of high fat satiating foods - such as cheese. If you try and remove dairy to, I think the diet becomes too hard to do...... unless you have specific reasons not to eat dairy.

maybe you need a bridge like cheese in the beginning but eventually that should go away. I started out eating lots of steak that was so tasty there was no need for anything else. I do have cravings and indulge in some things like cheese but it gets better and better as time goes by. I think it is worse to be hard on yourself and hold yourself to a standard that you know will end in failure. I am still addicted to coffee, though I have switched to decaf. Before coming across your videos I was following every Keto video I came across and wrote down every recipe I could. Trying to figure out what was best for me and just trying to absorb everything. Consuming omgosh all of my spare time and many spiral notebooks of notes. I did invest in coconut and almond flour, nuts and nut butters a few things!! But made a full list of things I needed to buy. Hundreds of dollars of foods and tools. Feeling guilty really to spend so much money in that way on my self. I feel so foolish now and time wasted. But thank goodness before spending alot of money. "Or should I say throw it away." I feel like I am on the right track now. And have you to thank. I will be following you and let you know in November how my journey turned out. Thanks again.

The truth is that raw dairy is better for you than pasteurized. Unfortunately, it isn’t legal in every state so most of the country is forced to settle for second rate product. But if you can only get pasteurized milk products, I would still recommend that you keep them full fat and sugar free. Also watch out for some brands of shredded cheese that put things like potato starch in it. It always helps to read the ingredients list.

I equate dairy into the fat category, as most the dairy I buy is full fat. Therefore I eat it in moderation. I don't add extra oils or butters just for the sake of adding fat. I add dairy just for flavor. I'll use a little butter to cook my eggs, add a couple Tbsp of cream in my coffee or sprinkle a light amount of cheese over my dish. Sometimes a small dollop of sour cream here and there. This is what I love about Keto. Never could I do this on a low calorie diet and still lose weight.

I'm now limiting full milk in my coffee to 50mls., about 1 tablespoon but the problem whilst reduced, still persists. Maybe I need to follow your lead and drop the dairy completely. Thanks for your insight.

Hello, So, I am trying to lose weight with Keto and thought that eating until your full sounded great. Then, there is too much fat? So what is the limit on fat? I am on a facebook group for Keto and they mention using an app to work out macros and the fat limit is highest, over 100 grams of fat. So now I am to limit those? Also, what are the foods with fats already in them? I am thinking bacon, but bacon can have a lot of fat.

I eat cheese, cream cheese, sour cream, heavy whipping cream, butter. I use the Cronometer app for a rigorous ketogenic diet. Fat is so important because it helps with satiety,

Yes, high fat meaning it comes from your body fat. That’s where people get it wrong, they think it means Nutritional Fat.

The fat bomb coffees are great.: yeah lots of calories.. high fat content. Zero carbs. I usuallly drink two in the morning (coffee w/ tbsp butter .. tbsp coconut oil). I will not eat anything til after noon. I suppose if I drank 10 it would be a weight gain issue, but that’s like saying I need to limit my fatty meat consumption because I may get fat from all the fat. This discussion was strange to me. This is carnivore /keto diet. HF LC. Cream, half and half, hard cheese, etc, easily falls into HFLC

Too right. Low carb AND low fat is an old fashioned crash diet. I think maybe he's speaking to the people who eat huge amounts of those things because there's no way low carb hunger can be satisfied without a reasonable amount of fats and oils, including cheese and dairy fats. And I'm not going without the calcium needed for bone health.

@@franbrough129 I don't speak from experience here, but from what I understand a lot of people have different experiences with goat milk products than cow milk products. One of the main differences is supposedly the types of proteins. Those in goats milk is less likely to cause an undesirable reaction than cows milk.

@Craig Slitzer. If people had a source of raw A2/A2 cow milk they would most likely have no issues with allergies, etc. I know people personally that have severe milk allergy, not just a lactose intolerance, and when they drink raw A/2 milk they have no issues. They don’t even need to take medication to tolerate the milk. The problem is that most dairy cows in this country are Holsteins and the majority of Holsteins produce A1 milk, which is why so many people cannot tolerate it. Now the Guernsey and Jersey breeds of dairy cattle are mostly A2’s but they are vastly outnumbered in the big dairies that produce the fluid milk for consumption in this country. If all people had access to the A2 protein milk AND raw milk, we would not be seeing issues with milk intolerance. People with just a lactose intolerance usually can drink raw milk and have no problem with intolerance. Pasteurization is what messes up the lactase in the milk. Raw milk has received a bad rap for decades and it is ridiculous! It has been all our family has drank for 25 years as we have our own family cows, which are also A2 milk producers. We have nephews which experienced issues with store bought milk but when they came to our farm and drank our milk they had no problems whatsoever.
@dancercj1491
@dancercj1491 2 года назад
@@kellyschroer2114 Thanks for this information about A2 milk. I had no idea about Guernsey or Jersey cows being A2. Thing is, is A2 milk sold anywhere other than farms? Sadly, where I live, there are no sources of this milk or raw milk so I'm taking my chances with cheese and hoping for the best (I don't feel bad with cheese as long as I don't go over the top with the consumption rations :D ), cheese from Marks and Spencers (I have a weakness for mild cheese). Now, I did try raw milk years ago but there were caveats. A), although I experienced an initial euphoric feeling from the initial drink, I had major stomach cramps and some intolerance from the dairy unfortunately. Plus, the one I bought if from only sold it in huge quantities and within under 48hours the milk soured - even in the freezer as I tried to turn it into natural ice cream. I was intolerant to it so it was probably still A1 milk. If I know for sure that A2 milk is sold in some stores, I will look into it and try it out just to see if I can handle the lactose in that. I sadly cannot afford top brand organic kinds but may have to go for something like ALDI/LIDL/SAINSBURYS ORGANIC as I'm sadly not genetically gifted to the point where I can become a cash cow (excuse the pun!)for top tier health. On the plus side, I have an immune system that functions better than the average person in the UK these days as most people tend to lean towards a corn oil diet loaded in sugar toppings and excess carbs, and my body cannot tolerate most carb foods or sugar and even many fruits don't concur with me either.
@kellyschroer2114
@kellyschroer2114 2 года назад
@@dancercj1491 there are some stores, I think, that carry the a2 milk but it is expensive from what I’ve heard. Which is typical when it is something good for you, the industry always wants to cash in on it and make a profit. They’re not concerned with the consumers health or welfare, just their bottom line. ☹️. But remember even if you find some in a store, it will still be pasteurized and that’s what usually causes the lactose intolerance problem. To my knowledge a store cannot sell raw milk. Also even if you get milk from a farm, it should last way longer than 48 hrs, I have had milk in the frig for up to 10 days before it starts to sour! It lasts longer in the winter months for sure but still, as long as the refrigerator is kept at around 38* it should last fine. And we always use glass jars to store it in, your milk has better flavor in glass.

I'm intolerant to milk in general but if I did do the keto diet, I'd have to keep cheese in my diet, otherwise I would end up being horrifically underweight as this diet is very restrictive for people like myself with very fast metabolic rates. I may need autophagy and a more relaxed form of keto however to deal with my autism and severe mood swing issues. I'm much calmer chucking out most carb foods and sugars. Even many fruit options cause sudden heart rate spikes in me. Brown basmati rice, baked beans and sausage also cause huge heart rate spikes also and I put most of it down to the fact these foods are refined with severe toxic ingredients and terrible agricultural methods and it is being done deliberately to control societies and to maintain sickness. Very evil!
