You actually can spam the scuf style paddles by sliding your middle finger over but not ideal. I did want to clarify you actually can get pretty fast on the scuf style paddles but still not the wolverine or tb stealth style with the buttons in the center.

I just ordered clicky button upgrades from extreme rate and found a guy in AliExpress that sells hall effect joysticks with calibration boards for Xbox and dual shock controllers. Going to try them out and hopefully I can report back with a success story

You aint wrong. Tho having gone through 2 doas, and 1 that died within 6 months and actually having a warranty on that one i paid for. And having to get a 4th. I cant recommend it anymore. Tho. Its comfortable and the battery life is incredible for wireless for the weight. I just cant recommend it, even the new one had double button input issues as soon as i got it. All new, none used. :(

Agreed. The FlyDiGi 4-button layout is the best I've ever used, and is perfect for the type of games that I play and my hand placement. I personally prefer to have a solid "hold" on my controller so I don't like having more than 2 fingers hovering over back buttons/paddles. The only way that I would like FlyDiGi's design better is if they could move the inner buttons literally 1-1.5mm closer to the outer buttons lol.

Happens a lot on ps5 controllers cos there’s limited space in that spot due to the haptic module and not many want to create a custom design to accommodate.

Agreed, those button types are annoying, I'd rather just have two or paddles like the elite V2 etc over those buttons.

Me personally being new pro controller owner, I don't mind it that much as I'm one of those people that have fingers on both triggers and bumpers at once on my Stealth Ultra since it's rear buttons for me are good for my index fingers to slide from a palm button to a rear facing button. And if I want to hit any ABXY button, my right pointer just goes to one of them from my bumper.

I was genuinely shocked at how spamable the innards of the Vader 3 Pro were. I was coming off of my second KK3 Max (both had broken back buttons within weeks), and I was amazed that the Vader 3 had way more functional buttons despite their placement. KK3 has all four accessible at once, but the unreliability and just horrible feel of the buttons meant that my performance drastically improved when switching to the Vader 3. Btw, PS5 Kontrolfreeks absolutely fit the Vader, they are just very tight and will probably never come off…but I don’t want them to come off, so we good!

im so happy that my Stealth Ultra arrived today and then this video comes out :D There is always one or two slow/infrequent actions which would feel acceptable on those harder-to-reach rear buttons, like mounting a horse or opening a character menu, map or pull up the phone in GTA..something like that. With the Stealth Ultra i find feedback and feel of RB/LB much more problematic, but thats another topic

The best controller ever would be a modular one for xbox/playstation/nintendo layout, 6 buttons like the vantage or the new scuf one, the 4 buttons are on finger resting positions. I would say digital button triggers like mouse clicks not those other version that you can't really spam. Hall effect sticks with tension adjustment. This would be the only controller people would buy casual or pro.

I heavily agree I used to play claw but then switched to 4 paddles briefly, and that was the biggest drawback I noticed I happened to buy the stealth ultra but recently switched to the game sir g7 which has two paddles as well as play I claw which seems to be the best of both worlds to me

I feel this is the one area that the Xbox Elite controllers absolutely nailed! The rear triggers/paddles are perfectly placed and I don’t understand why other manufacturers don’t follow this design. The TB Stealth Ultra is a great controller, but I find myself having to press the inner buttons multiple times for them to accurate.

The TB Ultra is the worst for this (and everything else) in my lineup almost never use it and regret buying it. I can spam them on my Envision but its because I tend to keep my middle fingers extended and that puts them above those 2. The loot button is programed to the left outer rear button so I can loot something while I grab my drink with my right hand. I wish for top buttons. The Razer is my favorite controller in history but Im tired of being wired. I prefer having to reach for its rear buttons allowing me to really get a tight grip when I wanted. For something I would spam a lot like loot and jump those would be the 2 top buttons between the triggers. On the Envision I have the side buttons set to jump both of them and then I give the controller a squeeze to activate. I couldnt use them the same as the Razer because I activate them by mistake too often. Im usually bouncing between the Envision Pro and the Dual Sense Edge these days depending on how many buttons I think I need but I have recently learned how to use DSX to do a lot of stuff with keyboard binds using multiple buttons pressed together. I also play Fallout 4 a lot and need F1 F2 and F5 for Place Everywhere. The Envison is my #1 because of all of the extra and clicky buttons, its trigger locks, and most of all battery life but the Dual Sense Edge is the most comfortable because its a little larger in the grips and using DSX I can get it to do as much as the Envision using multiple button presses and the FN buttons being available as programmable.

Have you covered any of the aftermarket upgrades from extreme rate for example? I'm interested in trying all of their clicky button upgrades (triggers, face buttons, paddles) Recently I found a guy that offers hall effect upgrades for Xbox/PS joysticks, has calibration software but requires soldering, which I realize is a deal before many folks. Just curious if you have messed with any of that or have plans to try them out.

I’m thinking of a battle beaver controller for the lighter buttons on the back since I prefer it. The ps5 scuf has stiff rear buttons and over time it causes forearm pain from my experience. So far I enjoy my victrix bfg pro since it is the most comfortable followed by the dualsense edge.

you sold me on the Apex 4 by Flydigi, had it about a month. i did purchase the elite style paddles from the guy that makes them on etsy, only complaint is in Call of Duty the contextual tap/Hold to reload doesnt always "hold" so it can be annoying dropping a gun mid fight when there is a bunch of loot. obviously ive messed with the screw tension on the paddles & it doesnt do it every time, but i think im going back to the stock ones for a while

Personally, I love the placement of the inner buttons of the Envison Pro and map my main keys to them. I used a PS4 controller with the attachment buttons for over 3 years and the way I position my hands is very similar with both controllers. I do have large hands so that could be why's it's more comfortable for me.

Hi there! I'm wondering if there are any gamepads on the market that have analog triggers registering the full range of motion and ALSO have a digital button that activates when the trigger is fully pressed? The Steam Controller had this feature, and it was really comfortable in some cases, but as you know, the Steam Controller is no longer available. Thank you!

Over time I just came to the conclusion that the most ergonomic is having only 2 back buttons like the Edge, preferably with the Edge's half-dome buttons. Nothing comes close to being as ergonomic as those for me.

I agree with the envision, I bought it before I could feel it and I would have bought it either way those two buttons are so awkward my middle fingers hit right on the edge of the button that's raised. I just stopped using them. Maybe I'll condition myself to use gey better but we'll see. Great vid!

Yeah its incredible how many controllers look like whoever designed them never used them. Personally I prefer when you can press both buttons with your middle finger (1 with the tip & 1 with the bone), but any additional buttons above that either be great too

I use four fingers for each button with my Scuff Envision Pro. It's kinda a claw grip. I personally would rather have the Xbox Elite Paddles for the back buttons there. One day I hope to find the perfect controller with clicky triggers and buttons and good back buttons.

I have the Turtle Beach and agree that for spamming it’s not the best. But for Souls Like games, to me it’s great. For Lies of P the inner P3 was my run button but like you said, it’s not spamming.

So far, my favorite back paddle setup is on the elite series 2 controller. What I have done to the back is I have added a second pair of the larger paddles vs using the smaller ones as they are harder to hit with the meat of my fingers. Im PRAYING that Microsoft adopts hall effect sticks, 1k polling, and clicky face/back/bumper buttons on the series 3. I love the quality of the controller and the Xbox accessories software application but i do wish for enhancements/feature upgrades with their next iteration. Im holding off on buying anything until there is that one "S tier" controller maker that Kevin gives all 10's across the board. Thanks for all that ya do, AK!

I tried the TB controller and didn't like those back buttons at all. Went back to my elite s2. I actually bought another set of paddles and have all 4 small paddles (2 are upside down) and just use my middle fingers for all of them. I haven't tried anything else that's more comfortable than that.

I tried scuff Instinct pro (after 2 elite 2’s broke on me) for a few months and couldn’t get use to the paddles. I’ve now got a core with the accessory pack separately. I prefer the Elite layout from the scuff layout. My core controller is a bit broken though. One paddle doesn’t click as nicely as the others. And the right stick won’t let me adjust the tension. (I don’t plan to use the tension though as it broke after over use on my last one) I got the controller new from Amazon last month

Ive gone thru a couple xbox series elite controllers myself. I just got a core replaced and I also wasted about 3 weeks dealing with scuf after trying their stuff and it was worse than the elites, imo.

@@JohnnyJaga I went through 2 scuffs before switching. My first scuff had a squeaky trigger and loose rear buttons. The second one also came with loose buttons and for £200 i thought id be better off getting a core. And then replacing it whenever it breaks. I have no hope this controller will last long my 2nd elite 2 broke after 6 months with a faulty bumper and the tension sticks didn’t work at all. Sometimes the sticks were loose or extremely tight without me adjusting anything.

Say what you say about the elite series 2, but the back buttons are the GOAT when it comes to back button design. The only thing I’d like to see is an elite series 3 controller with a polling rate of 1ms or that can at least be overclocked!

I thought the same thing you did about Scuf Envision pro when I first got it. However, we both were putting our fingers in the wrong position. Scuf should include a manual with finger placement. For the back buttons, put your middle finger not under them, but on the other side of those bottom buttons on the side towards the center of the controller. You then can press using your middle fingers on the sides of those 2 back buttons that are on the back of the controller. It works much much better than trying to use your middle finger from the bottom. Then for the buttons on the grips, you use your ring finger to press. At all times, I have a different finger on each of the 4 buttons and can spam each as needed.

You know what would be interesting is to understand why these controller companies keep making these designs not based on player comfort but rather the hardware innards of the controllers. It seems like there's a set of technical limitations that they are trying to work around. I got the Instinct Pro based on your video and its been great except that Scuf can't seem to get away from that wack inner button layout so I can't and therefore never use those inner back buttons. I picked up the Flydigi Apex 4 but haven't fired it up yet as I'm a little worried about their software (iCue is terrible still). All that to say, given how knowledgeable you are about controller innards, have you given any thought to working on your own designs to try to solve some of these issues?

This is my biggest hold back with all this controllers I rather stay with an elite series that doesn’t need me to have contortionist fingers to press the 4 paddles, I know all the specs on the apex 4 are amazing but end up worthless if u cant spam the back paddles

I got used to my Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma controller. The position of the back buttons is far from the grip but after a full year of use, I no longer notice the discomfort.

Razer should sell paddle extenders for their back buttons. The whole controller would be way more functional if the bottom two paddles were under your fingers for jump and crouch and then had the 4 others mapped to other functions that you could quickly move to hit but not spam the same way as jump/Crouch the main 2

Review the beitong zeus 2 or new ps5 hex controller. The zeus 2 has modular thumbstick, dpad and face button. Also has 4 back paddles, trigger lock and 2 extra should button. The ps5 hex controller is a better dual sense with 4 back paddles instead of 2.

Turtle beach stealth ultra and scuf design are way better. Yes its not as easy to hit the secondary buttons as the primary buttons but it eliminates the problem of finger overlap on buttons which doesnt happen on well placed buttons but can make a controller unusable if you find that to be the situation, and you also can add a button underneath to make it a 6 button controller easily

Like you said, you should be putting things like reload/ping/switch weapon on the paddles that are "harder" to hit. The paddles where your middle finger rests nicely are for things such as jump/slide/crouch/roll/dodge/ etc... I am personally not a fan of having paddle/button placements for the the ring fingers. Maybe I haven't experimented enough but that's one reason why I disliked the Victrix BFG. I personally believe that AIM has one of the best 4 paddle designs. All you gotta do is hike your middle finger up a smidge to activate the higher paddle. The SCUF Reflex paddles feel great as well, however the more inner paddles can be a bit more tricky at times and you could slip off it without actually hitting it with the inner part of your nail/skin on your middle fingers. I also installed an extreme rate kit (plastic) on my standard PS5 controller but I feel like the plastic is a bit loose and may change out to get the metal kit. However, the inner paddles on that controller are also a little finnicky as well because you have to do like a slight middle finger extension to hit those inner ones. However, not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things so long as your mapping the non major actions such as reload or switch weapon or ping to those inner paddles.

I actually find this button setup the best for shooters, I loved the scuf setup as well. In my opinion it’s the best setup of buttons I’ve ever had. I like to be able to grip my controller whilst keeping that one finger loose! Yes you can’t spam the button that rests to the edge of your finger, but I use jump/switch to pistol on the buttons. No spamming needed whilst I play pubg just easy actuations when needed. Crouch and over the shoulder on the easy to use back buttons, and wham bam thank you mam it’s a killing machine. One of the better controllers and unlike the scuff or the elite. It’s got 0 drift after 6 months of use on a 0 ingame dead zone. Now let’s get to the issues, first off. The app is terrible, bugged to hell and back, the different sticks settings off standard, instant and precision do not set properly! Set it to instant on your controller screen and go and check the app and you will find it’s set to precision. Set it to precision and go into the app and it’s set to instant. Thankfully standard actually is in the right slot! Next off, why can I not choose between 0-5 on the inbuilt dead zone on the controller? Makes no sense! Next off, I run hot hands and straight away it was not designed as well as the elite 2 controller, sweaty betty time with the turtle beach and instantly had to buy additional grips which covered up those pretty lights! Next off the trigger stop developed an issue of not reading the continued acctuation of a long press for full auto. Ran a couple of months without it even on which was hella annoying. So overall the best controller I’ve ever had and I’ve owned a few. I am a full time gamer, hitting around 6-10 hours gaming every day. At the age of 46 I’ve used a lot of different controllers, and love this one the most. Although Hall effect are kinda weird to use. The anti drift makes it worth it! Just hit the 6 month marker and oh dear, the rt button has just broken. DO NOT BUY WITHOUT INSURANCE TO FIX IT, although I am still in warranty. So returning to GAME UK ONLINE to use the warranty. Unfortunately they have a 14 working day processing period to get another one back to you😢. So overall I love it, although turtle beach could have spent more money on what mattered such as on better grips, changeable stick tensions, and controller longevity. The inbuilt screen is great, although I’ve never used the social app side which is also a waste of money. Overall great controller but overpriced at £180. It lasted as long as my scuffs, 6 month. Yet I have yet to find a controller that lasts longer. ZERO DRIFT though!!!❤

i own dualsens edge, scuf envision pro,big won Rainbow 2 Pro, xbox elite 2, dualsense og mod by extremerate metal back paddle package, and a hex phantom( pre-ordered), by the way im using normal grip to hold, or My index and middle fingers on both hands will stick on bumper and trigger if its on dualsense, i think the best experience i had until this momento with back paddle or botton is dualsense edge and xbox elite 2, the worst is envision pro, also suprisly the rainbow 2 pro has the most easily press with mouse kick botton, idk if u had this controller before, probaly worth to try it😃

100% accurate. Its why i have stuck to my Victrix gambit. The paddles arent ideal. And a bit cheap feeling of a controller. But the performance is there. Despite the built in dead zone. Its never given me issues with any buttons. Unlike the elite 2, which has a fantastic layout and paddle design. But is fisher price innards. Meanwhile im still sitting here, waiting for Gamesir to make a hall effect controller in the xbox layout. With 4 paddles, where its as you say, 2 on the ring, and 2 on the middle comfortably. Thats what im waiting for. Hall effect sticks and triggers. Mechanical buttons everywhere. 4 paddles in the right spot. With some good trigger stops. Wired or wireless wouldnt matter to me at that point. Because it would be the controller I have been waiting for, for an extremely long time. And I hope a company sees this message. Because everything I want, everyone else would also go gaga over. Because a good design, is just a good design. We're just all waiting for a company to put all the pieces together. And it not cost 500 dollars. And I think alot of people would jump on it. Just like they did the Flydigi controller. Which is close. But still not quite. But...very very close.

Me personally when it comes to 4 back button controllers, I prefer to have access to all 4 buttons with my middle fingers. Pressing the bottom 2 buttons with my ring fingers is a little uncomfortable for myself.

They’re Hall effect so I tried looking at the guide aim has on their RU-vid channel but holding the thumb stick up while plugging it in doesn’t seem to put it in recalibration mode for me

I do find the small buttons on the back of a controller, particularly if they were towards the bottom of the grip of the controller are easier to accidentally press. I play a majority Fortnite and I need a minimum of three back buttons. I personally prefer the paddle style that are two different movements of one finger to press. Yes that’s exactly what I’ve found. On the other hand, the extreme rate remap kid for ps4 was the right location, but a bit too close together for me. I found myself accidentally fat fingering buttons in fights. Honestly the best paddle locations I’ve found so far is something like a gamesir, but with a pros roller scroll wheel and the extra paddle that comes with it. That’s what works for me, because I can situate the third button and scroll wheel anywhere!

If Sony adds two more buttons, potentially perfect. If Xbox (Microsoft w/e) gets that polling rate to 1000 hz and adds hall effects, potentially perfect. If someone can tell me they played 1000+ hrs on a Scuf Envision with a stick drift of less than .05, I'm in. If dope companies pushing the boundaries of the industry, like Flydigi, quit trying to make a square wheel roll and succumb to the suppiriority of the elite paddle system or the middle/ring finger button layout, I'd buy two yesterday. Your back button layout suggestion is my go to and I have it tied for #1 with the Elite Series 2 paddles for best in ergonimics, feel and overall usefulness. Almost got the Scuff Envision because I feel the sax buttons could make up for not having a designated button for each finger on the back but Scuf has always had durability complaints and I'm still waiting for someone to say the I Cue software is actually better. I might cave and get the Flydigi Apex 4 but the back button layout just seems dumb now that I've had the Elite Series 2, a custom duel shock and duel sense with back buttons for my middle and ring fingers. I don't do custom controllers anymore though because I just don't trust people opening up a perfectly manufactured duel sense and turning it into a $250 6 month POS. The edge's dome paddles look like an awesome design for middle layout back buttons but there's only 2 and I don't have a ps5. I've put 3,000+ hours into a stock grey camo duel sense and am just now getting stick drift and it feels like I'm getting double inputs sometimes on the x button. If a joystick and a button wear out at the same time, replacing the joystick means nothing to me. What I want is an actual pro controller. Something designed for pros that like go to LAN's. rumble motors or adaptive triggers, rgbs, extra software, it's just fluff. Stock with 1000hz polling rate, button mappings that are both stored and are remappable on board, 4+ ergonomic rear buttons (scuf type implementation of the sax button too?), hall effects sticks with replaceable variants of the tops, and a nonslip ergonomic grip

I hate those flat buttons. What controller works like the scuf😮 in performance. But Xbox paddles or something more comfortable. Scuf and Xbox elite both triggers I had pain in shooter fingers because I was spamming the fire and shape of trigger was to short. I’ve now upgraded to mouse and keyboard w pc but miss playing w a controller. Looking for the side buttons like scuf has but different 4 read buttons to remap and spammable.

Having had a Scuf instinct pro I can say that this layout is super awesome and easier to use than 4 buttons under 4 fingers. Easier to memorize button locations for me. But this is just my thoughts on the topic.

I honestly think all rear paddles/buttons are kind of an afterthought. I remember they started getting popular on modded 360 controllers to cheat online and the rest is history but my point is: I dont think the modern controller design is made to have them and thats why no one has got them exactly right. I mean just think about it. They are in a spot where you are supposed to grab the controller to have grip and firmness, most of the time dont give space to let your fingers rest when not using them AND a lot of them just straight up break. To integrate them better probably a whole controller industry redesign would be required but I highly doubt thats happening.

By far the worst implementation I've tried so far was the Fantech Nova WGP14 because they're barely contoured while being positioned at the rear of the controller. Personally, I'm paddle pilled with my KK3 and will stick with it until something mythical like an Xbox Elite Series 3 with Hall Effects comes out.

I love my Scuf Instinct pro and the paddles... I've owned both Xbox Elite controllers and could never find it in myself to learn to use them. But with the Instinct my middle fingers fit right in between the rear buttons so perfectly and now I use them all the time... I'm not really a competitive/PVP kind of gamer but not having to take my fingers off the sticks is great and changed the way I game.

All these companies are just trying to reinvent the wheel so they can act like they're so smart. I can get behind one or two companies having one of these "alternative" configs but it's like 6 companies at this point. The Razor is the most disappointing of the bunch. I love everything about the Wolverine but their rear button design is absolutely atrocious. I tried to use one for a month to see if I could get into it. It was basically 20ish days of me pretending that it doesn't suck because i didn't want to have to return it.

I think that best paddles design should be the ones that in the right hand you can press both bottons easily. I tested and the best for grip and aiming is having the pinky and the ring fingers free to grab the controller.
