True. The bad directing comes in because there are ways Pitt's tank may not become the lead. He could have a slight mechanical trouble and the second tank takes over. He could order another tank to lead since they might run into enemy infantry and the 75mm had better anti infantry effect than the 76mm. As pointed out, his column could have some accompanying assets like light tanks as scouts ahead of the column. Etc.

Tanker's grandson here! My grandfather was the driver in a 75mm Sherman in the 735th Tank Battalion. His experience in the hedgerows and into Germany was that he said he rarely ever if even at all saw a Tiger. He said the vast majority of combat was against Panzer 3s and 4s, rarely maybe sometimes a Panther. When they were deep into Germany he saw a either Tiger or King Tiger on a ridge. It had been used as a kind of turret because it was out of fuel and it was abandoned. He was really cool. I miss him 😢

Brad Pitt characters is all about the 'looking strong and protective' type as he is the commander, as the start when they just lost their assistant driver you see him keep a poker face, only to walk between two building afterwards and breakdown into a nervous wreck. When the tank platoon is tasked with holding the crossroads, and that they are told that if the germans go through the entire battalion is fucked because he either saves his men, ditch the tank, but then what ? They don't have any tanks left and the germans would be hitting the supply hub and make the situation living hell. So technically there were two tanks after the ambush started that could have killed the Tiger from the front.
@ExecutorGCW

Yeah, the Sherman that was commanded by Peterson was an M4A1(76)W, named 'Old Phyliss'. The other two Shermans in the platoon were an M4A2 and an M4A4 with standard 75mm guns. Fury is also presented in the film as an M4A3E8 but she's an M4A2E8 in real life.

Due to Tiger 131 being unique and extraordinarily valuable, you will notice that she does not turn. That's because she is being driven on a concrete/tarmac road overlaid with mud. The Tank museum was worried about damage due to possible strains made on the chassis when manoeuvring in the field and so the special effects team came up with this solution. And yes, why would a Tiger commander close distance, with an effective range of over a kilometre, they simply don't have to. The road was removed after the scene was shot. No fields were harmed in the making of this film.

Cool facts there John. That just makes me wonder; If the Tank Museum was SO worried about their Tiger getting damaged during filming, why didn’t the production crew either make a replica of a Tiger to actually destroy or use different “tank killing” tank? That way they could’ve done a lot more action with the Tiger and have it go up in real flames.

@erebus7306
@erebus7306 3 года назад
Only 1/4 was good enough to penetrate from the front. In a scenario where the lead 76mm is taken out first, what do the other 3 tanks do if shots bounce off from the front and get picked off one by one. I believe it was a desperate tactic in the event Brad Pitt's tank was taken out first(or technically second) during the charge, the other two might have made it instead of it being hopeless.
@901Sherman
@901Sherman 3 года назад
IRL, the 75 mm gun shermans would’ve done the flanking while the 76 mm one engaged from the front. That way the tiger’s attention would’ve been split and regardless which one he focused on, at least 1 or 2 shermans would’ve gotten in a killshot.
@france.the_bastard
@france.the_bastard 2 года назад
not really. it was us army doctrine at the time for Sherman's, if facing a better armored vehicle, to charge and try to flank it. casualties we're guaranteed but the exchange rate of one mass produced Sherman for a panther or tiger was considered acceptable by the army
@901Sherman
@901Sherman 2 года назад
The tactic isn’t ‘charge blindly at enemy while guns go blazing’. US doctrine explicitly states that tanks should use the tank vs tank version of ‘fire and maneuver’. Part of the tanks (preferably the ones with the bigger guns) engage the tank from the front where at best, their heavy guns could knock it-out and at worse, they could still provide a distraction. The other group does the flanking and hits them from the rear. Non of that is present in this engagement.
@MrMrHiggins
@MrMrHiggins 2 года назад
Yeah not from that range. Just because a weapon has that capability doesn't mean it happens every single time. A shot at 400 + yards at a target the size of a cutting board (the flat parts of the front armor - also the thickest) isn't a reliable way to ensure effective engagement.

I was mainly talking about the way the script was written, so as to see a working Tiger on the move. In real life, all sorts of scenarios could have played out and indeed did, especially early after D-Day, when narrow hedge lined roads would have severely impeded the Tigers' main advantage... the ability to take out allied tanks at very long ranges. Similar restrictions (along with allied air supremacy) meant that all forms of German armour were hampered, including the more numerous (and stealthy) Stugs and other tank destroying armour.

I know an historian who briefly consulted with Ayer in the project and he essentially said this was never about hyper specific tank engagements. And as you pointed out, it’s more rare to have the 76 anyway. So in theory, had it not been a 76, there are accounts of this happened in small skirmishes. It isn’t impossible pending circumstances. They also had a working Tiger. Are you really upset they showed it in action? That LITERALLY alone should forgive any gripes. There’s arguably many ways to have made this scene excited. I’d argue this wasn’t the most elaborate so if he wanted to fudge the logic, it could have been egregious. There were scenarios where both tanks had situations where charging was wise. Given numbers. This could be about position. This could be about them having to pass. This could be their armor had existing damage. Their view could have been slightly obstructed or their best line was on the rear and given it was a free shot, it must meet its target. It’s equally silly to cite examples of front targeting when this situation is an open field where spacing made that irrelevant. You know those aren’t the circumstances where this was effective. point is, it’s accurate enough not break immersion to the normal audience while depicting the inner relationships and showcasing documented hardships accurately in that scene. Remove the action, and the experience is accurate. That’s what mattered.

Years on end of hearing stories, about my great great grandfather who was in a tanker crew, then watching this movie was immaculate. Although 1 or 2 combat scenes where questionable, I’d have to say “fury” was spot on for the most part when displaying the lives of a tanker crew. From the attitudes, to their weaponry, and all the way to their looks. The directors seemed to do their research. Rest easy Grandpa.

Out of interest, how old was your great great grandfather back then? Four generations back, so he must have been a teenager, right? I'm asking because that seems to be the most unrealistic thing about the movie, all the soldiers are older men, when in truth they were really young.

Κικιώνης Κωνσταντίνος TECHNICALLY it is accurate. That’s very accurate to what a tracer looks like. But every 2-4th shot is a bit much. Normally tracers will be in the 3-4th bullet and then the 3-4th final bullet. So that when you shoot your allies can see the direction you’re shooting (but not the very first shot in case they weren’t looking that way) and then the final shots so they know they’re about to run out (sometimes not always for that)

my problem with movies is something that fury shows perfectly. They could have changed bit and pieces by smallest amount to make them realistic but the dont. Like they could have just had fury in the middle of the Sherman column...then the tiger could then shoot the first tank, reload, and shoot the back one as the Sherman's try to rotate and then get smoked by fury....which causes them to push forward through said smoke as they have lowered the number advantage, due to this unexpected move and the fast paced situation they shoot the first tank they see (this being the last of the 3 75mm shermans) and then get blasted to bits by fury while they reloading and realising their mistake. That imo would have been a sick scene.

Yeah, but hitting the front tank first gives them less options. If you hit the rear first, the column is still able to go full speed and has total freedom of mobility anywhere but backwards, if on good terrain. Hit the front and they have to maneuver around it to keep pushing foward, and may even have to slow down to avoid it. Then the rear to cut off an attempt to reverse, as vehicles tend to take a moment to stop and then reverse.

@@lightninghawk5981 The Panzer IV D version had a 75mm gun in 1940 allready, while the Panther had a 75mm gun as well. Yet they were a world apart. The short barreled panzer IV was mainly used to fire high explosive shells into infantry and other soft targets, when speed of the projectile is not really usefull. A 'slow' projectile is usefull, because when firing a lot of smoke and dust clouds the view, and when the shell hits the target before the view is cleared, you have no idea if you hit anything. With a slow shell you have a better idea if you hit or missed. It does not take a fast shell to penetrate a truck or artillery from any side, and almost all damage is done by the explosion. Now to kill a tank, you need a shell that penetrates the armour. A tank can not be destroyed by a simple explosion on the outside, like a human. So you need a shell that has enough kinetic energy to punch through the armour and deliver all kinds of nasty death on the inside. So a faster shell is better. How do we make a shell travel faster? A longer barrel helps, as the gas expanding from the cartridge pushes the shell for a longer time before it leaves the barrel and the gas can expand in other directions. The Panther had a very long gun, and its 75 mm shells were both accurate and fast due to this. It was even better suited to kill enemy tanks then the Tiger 1 with an 88mm gun. The King Tiger also had an 88mm gun, but it was longer yet, and outclassed them both. TL:DR 75 mm and 76 mm are names, describing a lot more then just the diameter of the shell.

So... as an actual Tank Commander on an M1 Abrams, I’ll say this. Your assessment is pretty good. If I was in a column like the American tanks were and received enemy fire, I would turn my thickest armor in the direction of the attack. I would also close distance, contrary to your assessment, because there isn’t any good terrain to provide cover. Concealment and cover are very important but vast different. The Tiger had better armor than the Sherman so the TTPs were to fix the enemy while also flanking them to enable the flanking tank an opportunity for a kill shot. This didn’t always work because the Tiger Commander may destroy the fixing tank first to allow them to deal with the flanking tank one on one. Some of this I’ve learned from 24 years as a tanker, some during the Cold War where the Russians were my most likely combatant, the war in Iraq where I spent 2.5 years fighting or in my time living in Germany and knowing Veterans of WWII and their children.

Little things that REAL tankers would notice are things like pissing in ammo tins, throwing hot coffee on the infantry boys freezing their tits off is a sure sign this movie was given advice from a guy that lived the life. As for this idiot talking tank warfare inaccuracies, I think he needs to close it and keep it closed. Gotta love the RU-vid generation thinking they are experts.
