“It looked like the sort of book described in library catalogues as 'slightly foxed', although it would be more honest to admit that it looked as though it had been badgered, wolved and possibly beared as well.” T Pratchett.

Very very interesting to learn a little about the conservators work. I really like your style of interviewing. Kind of both asking questions and presenting the object. Thanks!

Brady is an amazing interviewer. He consistently asks spot on questions which are relevant, interesting and trigger additional information exposure from the interviewee. One of my favorites is "what's it like being an astronaut and having not been in space?" - The Unflown Astronaut, Sixty Symbols.

I work in a museum and I KNEW tape would be on this list. Aside from tape, another way people think they're helping to preserve a document (but really they're not) is by laminating it.

Sorry for the two-year old reply, but how does lamination hurt paper? Shouldn’t lamination plastic be inert or whatever?

This is a great example of an utterly fascinating video that I would not have clicked on were I not subscribed to this channel and determined to watch every single video that Brady produces. Who knew paper conservation could be such a rich subject? (Aside from conservators and archivists, that is.)

Came to this chanel via numberphile, and there via wtfk, but Objectivity is getting me serouisly hooked. So much interesting stuff, great presentation, brilliant editing, and just a sheer diversity that every video surprises me all over. There are many videos where I look at the title and think; 'Nah, I'll pass on that one.' Sometimes I check them out anyway. I'm usually wrong; all of it is engaging, entertaining and informative. Great stuff, and a great big thank you for enriching our lives.

I used to work in a research archive and worked with items that were hundreds of years old. However, the most fragile thing I ever worked with were some WWII era reports that were on wood pulp paper. All the edges were disintegrating and some of the pages were almost bright yellow. I guess they just used cheap paper at the time not thinking anyone would ever bother with it in the future.
@Hauketal
@Hauketal 6 лет назад
Jeremy0459 Maybe it also depends on the process of bleaching. At that time chlorine based bleaches were often used, starting an acidic dissolution of the paper. Today they substitute chlorine with oxygene, making even wood pulp paper much more stable.
@Jeremy0459
@Jeremy0459 6 лет назад
That's very possible. I really don't know too much about the paper that it was printed on, other than that it was in particularly poor condition. Also I don't know what the storage conditions were like before it was acquired for the library. Being a military report created during war I image they might not have been that great.

I have mixed feeling about that kind of work, on one hand we get to enjoy the original for a longer period, on the other hand it stops being the original little by little. I'm also intrigued by how future conservationist will work with the various type of media we currently use to record information.

Now, I'm sure simple copies are regular routine to preserve the raw information of the piece, but is there any merit to just abandoning the original entirely for the sake of clarity and permanent preservation? There's something enamouring about original art and documents, but ultimately it's about what's on the carrier, not the carrier material itself, isn't it?
@qwertyman1511
@qwertyman1511 6 лет назад
SkullCollector incomplete information problem? We will probably lose information by abandoning originals because we cannot say with 100% certainty we have all the information. people did not used to be able to few previous layers of painting for instance. Those would have been lost if we did what you propose earlier.
@qwertyman1511
@qwertyman1511 6 лет назад
SkullCollector also, certain experiences can not be properly stored. For instance, colors exist which can not be displayed on commercial screens.
@SkullCollectorD5
@SkullCollectorD5 6 лет назад
That's a good point. Eventually copies of copies will have degraded enough to render the original info if not destroyed but incomplete, yeah. I just think spending time, effort and money on, for lack of a better word, mundane objects could be better spent studying, then copying it. Works of art are outside this, I'd assume.
@michaelcollins966

This attitude of conservation over restoration has been accelerated in recent times with technological developments that allow us to garner more from historical artefacts than was previously thought possible. Hence, this conservation is 'future proofing' in a way.
@growlwn143
@growlwn143 6 лет назад
Actually, an option in preservation of paintings or fresco's is taking the painting layer and transferring to another carrier. This can be done when either the painting or the carrier are too brittle or damaged to preserve the artwork in a qualitative manner. That said, as the person above me stated, you do lose a valuable amount of data on the piece when doing so and executing such a procedure should be avoided if possible. Additionally, not all types of art lend themselves to such treatment. With paper for instance, the medium is often too fused with the ink because the paper acts as a sort of binder. This ensures that you cannot remove the paper without the ink.
